    Suspension is typically a very complex topic...
    I find it refreshing to see that in the past at least, engineers made suspension at simple as possible when things like leaf springs and torsion bars... They just seem so primitive and crayon simple to me. I love the concept of a torsion bar in general and how they work because you might actually be able to correct a sagging suspension on an old truck with a few turns of a screw. I think that's a great design.
    I found your video to be very informative, clear and safe.

    thanks to people like you.. i have a job. when you lift a chevy always loosen then tighten suspension bolts with the vehicle on the floor at the rubber bushings after the ride height change to keep from tearing out the bushings. some aligment guys dont do know to do this or are just to lazy to do it, so do it yourself then get an alignment at a good shop. and no, a key lift on a chevy does not accelerate ball joint/tie rod wear.. these usually last 60-90 k on a stock vehicle any way.

    • @bcjdwbiernfjherwfbowfib
      @bcjdwbiernfjherwfbowfib 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, levels do put more stress on the rods and ball joints. But luckily, ball joints and tie rods aren't too expensive.

    • @LirokuToragi
      @LirokuToragi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is the argument I don’t understand, even if it accelerates it, I replaced my entire front end, new control arms and everything. It only cost MAYBE $500 And a days worth of slow paced work. Now I have more adjustment in my control arms, and if my joints start going bad after 50k miles, I’ll just swap them out in my driveway, cheap and easy. The ride height, bigger tires, and ground clearance are easily worth half a days worth of trouble every 50k+ miles.
      A lot of times the people complaining don’t just level, they throw in bigger wheels and tires, end up hauling ass into ditches and mud holes, then complain the suspension wore out faster than stock. Of course it did.

    Did this to my 2000 Silverado 1500 about a month after I bought it last year. The torsion bars had fatigued and the lower A arms were riding on the jounce bumpers. They need .5 to .75 inch clearance. I did a shock extension kit because the factory ones are ridiculously short. Adjusted the headlights and had an alignment done. The camber was out. After that I added upgraded anti roll bars front and rear and yesterday had a Detroit trutrac installed to replace the broken G80. I think I need to go to one of them meetings where you state your name and confess that you have a problem.

    people are always getting ripped off with buying keys. Someone just the other day told me on my 2500hd I would have a better ride if I went with aftermarket keys than cranked stock keys. When I told them I still have a ton of adjustment left with the stock keys and dont need aftermarket they said that my ride will be like stock but the height will be the same as it is now. Then I realized they had no clue what they are talking about, just like everyone else that buys new keys.

      The A arm is merely a lever with a fixed point on the frame. The only way to raise the ride hight is to drop the fixed point with proper lift bracket or steepen the angle. This is a fact regardless of what's holding the back side of the bar.

    there is a few reasons why trucks and SUVs are higher in the rear.
    1 If you are carrying a load it keeps you from looking ridiculous.
    2 that little bit of nose down reduces wind resistance by leveling you will be paying more for gas.

    After you took your torsion key stop out, looks like your torsion bar to lower control arm bushing was shot for wobbling around that much. That affects your height too. Might want to change your bushing while you have your torsion bar out.

    I did the same to my 03 Silverado. Bilstein 5100 shocks all around. And added a leaf spring in the rear, but used Moog torsion keys.

    • @52RedHouse
      @52RedHouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The truck rides pretty stiff now I'm thinking about getting some track bars or a rear sway bar installed. You feel every little bump but it handles the big bumps just fine.

    • @52RedHouse
      @52RedHouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and I'm sitting at about 39 in in the rear and 38 and 1/8 in the front. I don't mind a little bit of rake to avoid it looking like I'm popping a wheelie when I pull a trailer! Lol

    • @52RedHouse
      @52RedHouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you get the 51 hundreds that are made for a two inch lift, they will raise the truck up a little more. Again, they are very stiff. Might want to try Ranchos, they come stock on the new Chevy Silverado and are a softer ride for a passenger vehicle especially.

  • @nickluchowski
    @nickluchowski 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The reason the ride isn't as smooth as factory is because you preload the control arm bushings when you crank the torsion bars up. Whenever you adjust the torsion bars you must loosen all four control arm bolts so they can move freely and then adjust the bars and once you have the ride height you want then tighten the control arm bolts and have the truck aligned. If you do it this way it retains the factory comfort level.

    • @iWatchVideosAtHome
      @iWatchVideosAtHome 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And remember to snug the bolts, rest the vehicle down on its suspension, then torque down the bolts, or the bushings will start to squeak on you. Also good luck on these 4 bolts if your truck lives in the salt belt. Had to use a cutting torch on my last truck to get UCA bolts out.

      @nickluchowski 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pointless? Comprehend physics much?

    • @STANREMLEY
      @STANREMLEY 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@nickluchowski Not to be a jerk but I am an ASE certified mechanic and I can tell you that your theory is pointless. The control arm bushings are already set in for one.. if they were installed correctly to begin with (attachment fasteners torqued and torque angle applied, if applicable, with the suspension under static load). Second, all that adjusting torsion key bolts does is adjusts the Z trim height. It does this by turning the torsion bars which in turn rotates and sets the lower control arms at a different angle (positive angles raise, negative angles lower the trim height). During all drive cycles, the control arms operate through this same range of motion they are going through during a torsion key adjustment. Nothing is binding during the adjustment, nothing new is being applied that dictates a special service other than a wheel alignment check/adjust to finalize the RO. So any positive results you are experiencing is all in your head.

    Good job here Jimmy. Very good presentation and process. They only thing I would have done extra is put a small dab of bearing grease on the rounded end of they stock adjustment bolt to help prevent galling on that end and ease installation and adjustment but it isn't technically necessary.

    Jimmy nice truck, I don't recommend cranking the t-bar to raise the truck. It changes the alignment and wears out the ball joints. Not worth the hassle.

  • @johnchristopherson2718
    @johnchristopherson2718 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Before you guys start making these modifications, do some research, you might not want to do this, because when you change the factory ride height , you also change the pinion angle of the rear end, which won't be a big problem, unless you plan on towing something.
    Good luck.

    Ride looks great. Have you had any issues with excessive wear on suspension components, ball joints, steering, etc., as a result of installing the torsion keys? I've read where completing a lift can accelerate wear and tear on the front end as a result. I'm looking to just level my front end with the rear on a 2001 Chevy 3500. Thanks.

    If you just go a little bit, especially just to level it a bit, you will be fine. That being said, I have worked for Chevrolet for many years, I have seen a lot of snapped torsion bars in my day from people jacking them way up. I'm not saying it is definitely going to break if you Crank It Up, just saying to be careful, it can and does happen. Now keep in mind I'm sure that has a lot to do with the way the vehicles are used and driven as well, not solely from cranking the torsion bars up

    All you have to do is swap the factory bars from one side to another side and you get this same lift for completely free. And if you really wanna be big for cheap you can put some lift keys on top of that. But you’ll have to cut your bump stops out from under your uca and put some shock extenders on. You’ll have four inches of lift for less than $200. And you can do it for less by doing everything yourself. Id recommend getting better balljoints though and takeout your cv axles cause both will be destroyed if you do this

    Good video Jimmy. I need to lift my 98 Suburban. The back is sagging a little bit and I want to put a slight lift on the vehicle overall. I want to do 3 inches on the back and 2 inches on the front to level things out before I put bigger tires and wheels on it.

    Tires and ground can be uneven and give a inaccurate measurement
