Thank you for following through on this. Good idea to use the GPS instead of doing the math on the old and new final drive ratios as that would have caused you to retain any built in OEM based speedometer error. For now you know your speedometer reads just slightly high at 80 MPH - should help you stay out of trouble. Great video, thanks again.
Oh thank God someone made a video about this. I was looking all over the internet for an easy fix but all I found was tuning and other expensive solutions. Thank you so much for bringing this product to my attention.
I often wondered if there was a way/device to correct this. Awesome! I'm really enjoying your channel, it's a perfect blend of education and entertainment. And helpful tidbits of info like this are GREAT
I don't know why it costs that much, but if it had a GUI it would be far more expensive. Hell at that point seems like it would make more sense to just make a phone app and an adapter for the phone. Actually that seems like a pretty good idea now that I think about it.
screwaccountnames agreed, but why bother putting time in effort, where in most cases it will be programmed once in its lifetime which takes 5 mins. That being said it should be $40 not $100!
Cyril Matthew Why doesn't he use a whiteboard and formulas? Amazes me the level of incompetent grammar. Don't you people realize that people perceive your intellect level by your grammar of your posts? tie your socks or shoes, its not people, its you who perceives intellect with the level of grammar that too in an independent and informal platform like this ...
Finally a video that goes straight to the point and gives an easy fix. Other videos start rambling nonsense for 4 minutes at grandpa speed 🙄. Now got to go find such yellow box specific for my car 😀. Edit: i see the yellow box is 100$. I guess I'll just remember the offset which is free. Edit2: I just ordered a GPS speedo for 20$ from Ali, stick that on the dash, job done🙂
Dan Sasala Chris Fix would have laid out tools, and routed his yellow box somewhere completely hidden and safe from everything, and at the end of the video admire his work like a man. Haha
I prefer the plug into the OBD2 port and change the setting in the computer method. Might be worth a call to your local automotive shop as many of the common Snap On scan tools can make adjustments for tire size in the computer. Depends on the vehicle though. I know the Chrysler OE scan tool also has a similar adjustment capability.
Hello. You will have problems with molex conector after few rainy daiys. Its just not made for out door use. Try to seal the conector and protect it from water, watter salt etc.
Just love it! How to do a burn out. Now I need tires. How to buy tires. Now I need a differential.. How to do a differential. Now I need to correct the speedo. How to correct the speedo. Now I need to correct my check light. Now I need to help my wife understand the craziness. Now I need a new life. .....Keep the videos coming, I can't wait to see the end. Now I'll pull a 40,000 pound trailer with my S2000....
Khaled Hossam nah he bought that S2K used with the intention of fixing all the little things on it to show us how to he. the reason it was off was because he changed his Differential
Damage42X you won't have to worry about your Lumina SS for too much longer. Holden cease production this year, so you won't be able to replace it. And being a Holden it will soon fall apart.
simpler than I was expecting. I've considered the idea of getting larger diameter tires, for better ground clearance and for reduced highway RPM so this could make that an option
The more you know: It is illegal in Germany for a speedometer to display too low speed, but it *is* allowed for it to show up to 10 % (+ an additional 4 km/h) too much so that in the worst case you're never driving too fast. So "correcting" it down might actually be illegal if you overdo it as tire pressure on warmer/colder days can invalidate your measurement. My car can supposedly only do 183 km/h, but I easily got it to "200" ;-)
That's all well and good, however bear in mind that virtually all speedometers have a built-in deviation. In my car I can read out the speed via OBD-II and it will match up exactly with the GPS (+/- 1 km/h). However the actual display is always reading 10% higher. If I were to fit a yellow box in my car to fix the speedo's deviation, I'd be throwing off the ECU, speed-dependent power steering and most importantly the mileage by 10%. That would for example make me about 13k km / 8k mi late for my timing belt service interval. So personally I'd set this yellow box to only compensate for what's changed (gearing or tire circumference), maintaining the factory default deviation on the speedometer.
factory does that for a number of reasons: it does give to the driver one unrealistic "feel" that the car is faster, acelleration is better because it hit the target early and also the fuel economy seems to be higher as you cover extra miles for your gallon, legally they can be up to 10 % off to up but not for down, so they do that to be in the safe side
so does this mean when I put it to 200% then the speedometer shows only half of the speed. like 50kmh instead of 100kmh. And does this mean the km only counts half? So when I travel 100km my car shows 50km?
Yes and no. your speedo will read your modification correctly, but depending on the make and age of the car, the odometer will likely record distance separately so as to prevent scamming the ownership and usage history.
LoL you should came to Poland. In Germany 5 year old BMW would have 150 000 km, but when the same BMW will ride (on tow truck) to Poland then the mileage will 'magically' drop to 40 000 km. We have 17 year old vehicles imported from Germany with the course of 150 000 - 200 000 km :D
does this mean that if you fit a different ratio differential and adjust the speed this way, since the ecu gets a separate reading the ecu will still be getting the incorrect speed for the odometer and you end up with 7% higher indicated mileage? :o
Hi Jason, as you mentioned, the speedo can read incorrectly when different tyres or wheel sizes are used, instead of the original measures. This leads to my question, if my Wheel size is 17R205/45, and proceed to change the tyres to 17R205/50, what will happen? I get that the top speed will go up because it is like putting a higher gearing and that the speedo will read slower by about 5% if I'm not mistaken, but what about accelaration? Will it be faster, slower, and will it be because the tyre is heavier or is here anything more at play? Thanks and great work!
This website will accurately (assuming you know your actual speedometer reading) measure the speed differential when changed your tires and wheels setup: www.willtheyfit.com/ Using the info you gave me and the website, your vehicle speed reading will be lower with the 50 sidewall by -3.22%.
Yeah I usually use tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ for that, but what I want to know is the actual acceleration 0-100Km/h (the topspeed I can calculate myself I think)
Hmm, I don't know about that, but you can check out this other cool website that has similar info to what you're looking for: www.enormouslysideways.net/calc.html You need to know your transmission setup. Check out the gear ratios for you're specific vehicle.
Hi Jason, Thank you for sharing these information with us. I have a question about using Ethanol instead of Gas to run the car engine. When it is safe to use it? is it true it gives the car more torque only if it is equipped with a turbo? .... thank you.
Thanks, very cool. How times have you filmed yourself doing something, just to finish the project and it not turn out like intended, hence pretty much ruining the aspect of the video. Ever have that happen?
Curious how this impacts the odometer. I'm always paranoid that with my car's speedometer reading high that the odometer is reading artificially high too. Makes a big difference for somebody leasing that needs to stick to a mileage cap.
That concern was popping up in my mind as well. I personally don't mind the odometer going up faster, but maybe the government sees it as tampering if they find out during the yearly checkup. If someone sets the correction to 1% then the odo meter wouldn't turn anymore (Extreme example).
What to do when a speedometer shows different misreadings depanding on speed? I.e. When I drive 50 km/h according to GPS, my speedometer shows around 56-57km/h, and this 5-7km/h stays the same from 30 to 140km/h, when I reach 160km/h, the measurement is spot on with GPS - straight up to 220km/h(max speed).
a handful of car's, and most powerful sportbikes have programmed top speeds. Some of these vehicles are capable of higher speeds, but the computer "governs" their top speed to something lower. If your speedo read's low, the governer will think your going slower then you are, letting you reach higher top speeds. Generally this doesn't mean much to most people, because sportbikes being limited to 300 km\h (186mph for you muricans!) really doesn't impact most riders of such bikes or car's with similar limits. the only time you see much removal of governers is with scooters, specifically the ones that are supposed to be limited to 60km\h and don't require a motorcycle license.
Hey Jason, I imagine you've probably seen it, but Jason Cammisa uses your observation that the P100D accelerates pretty much as fast as it brakes in the latest Head 2 Head. Kinda cool!
1:27 I was like "what?? I didn't put anything in the microwave!" And yea I'd be comfortable with the setting reading a little higher than I was going. Learned that from experience. "It must be the larger diameter tires I put on my car, officer!" is apparently no longer an acceptable excuse. :-)
Quite different than the way I corrected my speedometer on my 65 Mustang after I installed 4:11 gears. I had to drive a measured mile and note how much mileage went on the odometer. There was a formula (don't remember what it was) used to determine which speedo gear to use to replace the stock one on the cable. Changing the gear to a different number of teeth brought the speedo down to a more accurate reading.
I drive a 1982 Mercedes 240D, I changed out the gearing in the rear end, but cars from this time frame were all mechanical speedo's, any thoughts ? As I'm ready to high as well, thanks for all the great videos you do, M
Did you check the speed at the PCM? Sometimes the clusters are programmed to show the speed a bit fast, as is the case on my Golf. The PCM sees the speed exactly correct, yet my speedo reads about 3-5 km/h fast. Also, usually using some software, you should be able to change it in the cluster without a hacky piece of hardware in-between.
not sure if mentioned in comments already.... a lot of modern cars don't have gearbox speed sensors. they get the speed info off the abs sensors. some use the gearbox speed sensor as a back up should the abs system fail. something to check before fitting any adjustment box.
Jason, do you think you can make an engine knock? I can't find any video where I'm absolutely certain that the noise shown is indeed knock. What I fixed and believed to be knock was almost certainly caused by the lifters.
If im not wrong, u changed the ratio in your differential and your speed sensor is in the transmission, it shouldnt effect the speedo reading.... is that right?
Actually, I have a different problem: My speedometer seems to be bang on up until about 70 kph, but starts to deviate if I exceed that, until it displays 160 kph but my GPS says 150. So it's not just a relative error, or else I would see about 5 kph difference at 70, not the exact match I'm actually seeing. Tips?
Hi! Was your speedometer falling up and down as well? I took it to the shop and the guy connected it to my vehicle as I'm driving it. He said my speed wasn't matching his tablet scan that was connected to my vehicle to read what was wrong with my vehicle. They replaced the sensors on my transmission.but my idle still drops as I'm driving. Do you know if I could use a yellow box to fix the issue?
I have the VW UPTSI 2016, and I need to correct the speedometer due the new tires. Does yellow box work with this car? In my case, the source of signal is on gearbox too or the UPTSI use signal from wheels (ABS sensor)? Will I have any problem with connector or the yellow Box matches with VW UPTSI ?
Could this little device be used (nefariously) to slow down the odometer reading? In other words, it allows the odometer to read fewer miles thereby lying about the car's mileage history..???
Question If you have a car with this problem when you are driving with over speed it means the car mileage get higher faster? I have a Toyota sienna and just drive locally and in in ten years the miles are over 200K
Good thing that you are driving a manual, because if it was an Automatic the ECU uses the Speed sensor to measure transmission slip, and this has a high possibility of throwing a code The better way of doing this is by changing the programming in the ECU. For example, if you had something like a "HP tuner" you can change the programming of the ECU to set the speedometer. HP Tuner only works on Domestics I think
Isn't there a way to do it through a tuning device? It had to do with finding the diameter of your... drive wheels? Idk, something like that, and programing it into a tuner of some sort and it'll do its thing through the OBD II port. Is this to fine tune it?
Some makes and models don't need a middleman device, with those it's possible to flash that adjustment factor to the ECU. I'm surprised Honda didn't have such a setup with this car.
Like the video but at the $100 price point it's pretty close to what the dealership charges to calibrate your speedo as well and flashing it is a better solution than having another piece connected.
i have a quick little question. if you were to change the differential on an all wheel drive to a bigger final drive gear, would you have to replace both or just the one??? saw the question on a forum but didn't see an answer and i was wondering the same.
I have 2017 2.2 ford ranger wildtrak. I changed my stoch tires 165/65 r18 to 175/55 r20. How will i know the difference percentage of actual speed? And how can i adjust it?
You change the gear that drives the cable. Different tooth counts change how the speedometer reads. This whole procedure is entirely unnecessary though. This can be done for free if you know the steps to take. Newer cars can be changed with an OBD2 tool. Older cars with electrically driven speedometers will have a procedure such as grounding a test pin, and cycling the ignition key, then adjusting the calibration using the odometer select and reset buttons.
I just used a GPS app and removed the needles and set the needles about where they should be and it works like a charm. This method obviously wouldn't work on a digital speedometer however.
I changed all the gauge screens in my car and I guess I didn’t put the needles in the correct places. It marks my temp, fuel, oil and turbo but not my rpm or speed. Will this fix it ?
Hi, I think my problem is a bit different. When I connect with my OBD-2 reader in my 2008 Ford BF the speed is accurate, but my dial is still ~5 kmh over
Where did this version of the yellow box come from? On their website they only show a v3 and v4 version that both have dip switches for setting the correction factor. *edit* nevermind I see the v5 version on the purchase page. They need to update that website with the documentation and pics of the v5 version!
My 2006 VW GTI reads 10% fast intentionally. Would this "fix" end up throwing off my MPG estimate, or my speedometer? Not a lot of info on their website.
Custom Coin Rings USA Yeah, but he's always calculating theoretical values for stuff on this channel, I'm honestly surprised he didn't include a calculation just to see how close it would be.
The threads on your tires make up to 3% variability in the speedometer measurement, depending on whether your tires are worn out or not. You can account for all the things that impact the speedometer theoretically but it just doesn't make sense.
My check engine light will triggers every time I hit a certain speed at certain RPM, mostly around 3000RPM or 120km/h. The error code says that the speed and RPM readings are out of range and not plausible. I'm guessing that using a slightly smaller tire is the cause. Will try changing back to bigger tires to see if it fixes the problem.
I changed my car's tire from 205 65 R15 to 215 60 R17 and obviously there is a speedometer error of around 6%, I'm wondering if this 6 percent difference affects my odometer reading? If so, is it okay to use the speedometer calculator online to check the actual mileage of my car?
A Bluetooth OBDII module + app will let you log the car's speedometer + GPS speed for download/comparison. Related - what options do you see that exist to simply adjust the speedometer via the OBDII connector/the car's own computer?
My motorcycle speedo shows zero kph again yesterday. It happened once previously and back to normal for about a week before it back showing zero. Any idea where/what should I check? thanks
I know some recent cars feature a special torque curve for the first and sometimes second gear. This ECU mapping is mainly made to prevent wheel slip (even if there is ASR on top of it), prevent bad sensation of "over torque" (some European TDI are really too torquy at low RPM and that be sometimes not a nice feeling when you are a passenger or even driving), lower wear on parts and tires, and improve fuel economy... This kind of modification (final drive ratio change) could be made useless on those vehicles since the ECU won't make any more power or torque that what is on the mapping for the given gear and RPM (with the stock final drive setting). Of course, I'm sure on a Honda S2000, power at high RPM, "low" torque, naturally aspirated, build around the year 2000, this kind of ECU limitation might not be fitted. What is your opinion ?
"Highest legal speed near you..." Mate i live in germany.

What a jank interface.
It's cheap, simple and works what more do you want?
I meant the design is cheap. The ludicrous price is another argument
I don't know why it costs that much, but if it had a GUI it would be far more expensive. Hell at that point seems like it would make more sense to just make a phone app and an adapter for the phone.

@Julian Schmidt I have a mk5 jetta that seems to be the same way lol. Just need to find someone with a VCDS....................
Tom Smith they do.
The factory don't want to be responsible for speeding fines.

Can't you calibrate it via obd? Will I lose the setttings if I do that? I have a VW jetta mk4.
Is the GPS the most accurate form, should I believe what that says over what my dashboard says, at all times (except in tunnels)?
Simple and effective. Thanks!
Hi Jason, as you mentioned, the speedo can read incorrectly when different tyres or wheel sizes are used, instead of the original measures. 1:27 I was like "what?? I didn't put anything in the microwave!"
And yea I'd be comfortable with the setting reading a little higher than I was going. Learned that from experience.
"It must be the larger diameter tires I put on my car, officer!" is apparently no longer an acceptable excuse. :-)
thanks for the video man, but can u show us how to correct an analog speedometer ?
Talk to your Mercedes Dealership Service Mgr.
Sounds bueno, I was thinking about changing the gearing on my cbr600rr for more torque (probably not for a while though)
not sure if mentioned in comments already....
a lot of modern cars don't have gearbox speed sensors. they get the speed info off the abs sensors. some use the gearbox speed sensor as a back up should the abs system fail.
something to check before fitting any adjustment box.
will that work if you're speedometer is where if the needle is reading 60mph but you're really going slower
Tips?
Does this correct the overall odometer reading as well?
This is gotta be one handy dandy little yellow box. This will be perfect for when I get bigger tired and lift my xB.
Does having a misreading speedometer also mean your odometer would be inaccurate by a similar %?
if changing tire size affects the reading, there must be a simpler way tire shops or your dealer can adjust it, right?
There are, but they usually require pulling out the cluster to adjust gears in it.
the right way to do it is to change the data in the ecu with a programmer
Thank you, Fix It Felix!!
Question If you have a car with this problem when you are driving with over speed it means the car mileage get higher faster? I have a Toyota sienna and just drive locally and in in ten years the miles are over 200K
Can you make a video explaining how pneumatic gearboxes work and why they are so expensive?
Good thing that you are driving a manual, because if it was an Automatic the ECU uses the Speed sensor to measure transmission slip, and this has a high possibility of throwing a code
The better way of doing this is by changing the programming in the ECU.
Have you tried multiple speedometer apps, and if so, which one do you prefer?
Is it true that leaving a manual car in gear will prevent the car from rolling in the event of the handbrake failing?
is there any way to do this if your car has a mechanical speedo drive
usually you can also code in a correction factor into one of the ECUs as well. If you can get a OBD interface and the software that is.
Why did you say that changing the final drive ratio (rear differential) is the result of the over reading speedo?
Like the video but at the $100 price point it's pretty close to what the dealership charges to calibrate your speedo as well and flashing it is a better solution than having another piece connected.
Thank you sir 4 ur explanation.
i have a quick little question. if you were to change the differential on an all wheel drive to a bigger final drive gear, would you have to replace both or just the one??? saw the question on a forum but didn't see an answer and i was wondering the same.
What about old cars with manual things like speedometer cable?
The speedometer of my Yamaha is dead I was hoping this would be a how to fix a completely non working Speedo do you have a video of this? Many thanks
I am curious to know if the car will register all those miles based on these adjustments.
I have 2017 2.2 ford ranger wildtrak. I changed my stoch tires 165/65 r18 to 175/55 r20. How will i know the difference percentage of actual speed? And how can i adjust it?
What about a GPS analog powered speedometer that you put over your current speedometer.
What about for older cars that use a cable?
Brad Cogan Has to have at least OBDII
You change the gear that drives the cable. Different tooth counts change how the speedometer reads. This whole procedure is entirely unnecessary though. This can be done for free if you know the steps to take. Newer cars can be changed with an OBD2 tool. Older cars with electrically driven speedometers will have a procedure such as grounding a test pin, and cycling the ignition key, then adjusting the calibration using the odometer select and reset buttons.
You. Are.. Awesome... Thanks for making!
I just used a GPS app and removed the needles and set the needles about where they should be and it works like a charm.
This method obviously wouldn't work on a digital speedometer however.
why not
Does this work for a analog speedometer? Or should I just use a GPS speed reader.
my grand prix's analogue needle gauge is usually 2- 3 mph less than the digital read out on my HUD... which is more likely to be correct?
I changed all the gauge screens in my car and I guess I didn’t put the needles in the correct places. It marks my temp, fuel, oil and turbo but not my rpm or speed. Will this fix it ?
Hi, I think my problem is a bit different. When I connect with my OBD-2 reader in my 2008 Ford BF the speed is accurate, but my dial is still ~5 kmh over
thanks, this is super helpful
Where did this version of the yellow box come from? On their website they only show a v3 and v4 version that both have dip switches for setting the correction factor. *edit* nevermind I see the v5 version on the purchase page. They need to update that website with the documentation and pics of the v5 version!
Is there no tuning solution for this Honda to fix the speedo correctly via a tune or something that tells the ecu the difference?
What app did you use to check your speedometer on your phone?
can you compare the vbox to a built in phone gps? how much off is it? should be pretty accurate for constant speeds even at 5hz.
My 2006 VW GTI reads 10% fast intentionally. Would this "fix" end up throwing off my MPG estimate, or my speedometer? Not a lot of info on their website.
can't you calculate the theoretical difference using the new gear ratio?
Tom Ho I'm surprised he didn't do that actually, but it was probably off a bit even before he changed the gearing.
Any idea where/what should I check? thanks
What app where you using to check your mph?
Any fix for old cable-driven speedo?
You're the coolest nerd I know.
