  • DIY odometer repair and LED dash light install. Learn how to fix your odometer to show the correct mileage when you drive. The odometer gear can easily be repaired by taking the gauges out from the dashboard, but I also show you how to replace the speed sensor. Since we are taking the dash apart, I show you how to install LED bulbs for your instrument cluster.

    I replaced the same gears in a Mercury about 12 years ago. Unfortunately I could not buy them anywhere, so I had to make my own. Worked great after the swap. Sometimes you can hear a noise coming from the dash when they're worn out. The LED's usually will not burn out, but the level of intensity will fade over time. If you don't have a Torx, then you can also squeeze by with a hex key.

    • @helivesonforever
      @helivesonforever 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also just sucker up and get a junkyard cluster too. Odometer will be off, but if you're a sensible person like most people aren't, you can put a piece of tape on the cluster and write the mileage of the car, and the mileage of the cluster when installed. That way, you will never lose track. Or you can just swap out the broken parts from the good cluster into your original one.

      My odometer was fine. I made an exact duplicate using the broken gear. I was able to make a mold and pour it using epoxy resin.

      electronicsNmore That's cool as hell! Got any pictures?

      No, it was a long time ago. The broken gear looked IDENTICAL to what Chris showed. I used dental impression material. The gear had to be lifted up and rotated into another position to make up for the area that was broken. Worked great.

    • @helivesonforever
      @helivesonforever 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      electronicsNmore That sounds awesome. I almost think that most car manufacturers use the same products for their odometers. The size might be a little bit different, but the parts are almost always identical from what I've seen.

      Cover your alternator and fuses with plastic bags. Cover intake too with plastic bag if it's one of those cone style intakes. Spray cold engine (make sure engine isn't hot) with light rinse (don't use power washer). Spray engine with degreaser (i use purple power). Let it sit for 5-10 mins and then lightly scrub. Lightly rinse with hose (again, don't use power washer). Good as new.

    I noticed the old odometer/trip gears were lubricated, its probably what softened them up over time, but you installed the new ones dry, still should last you quit a few years still.... oh, and that MILWAUKEE 12v cordless drill(fuel/m12/brushless), i have the same and its a beast in such a small package.

    Hi Chrisfix,
    Would you tell us how you did figure out what part you actually needed to order? And how you selected a supplier for that?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good question! I knew the odometer wasnt working and I knew it runs off a gear and I knew the speed sensor feeds it info. I did a quick online search to see that these mustangs have this problem. Boom, that easy!

    • @SE45CX
      @SE45CX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, but it is my opinion that you have been lucky the failure of that part is a common problem in the mustang and having a reasonably priced aftermarket part available. Oftentimes I do think people run into a lot of frustration to (1) obtain some part number of the one that's broke and (2) finding this correct part on the internet, (3) ensure that's the part they actually need, with all the missing data in the advertisement (I don't think I'm the first one who hates that) (4) prevent from being ripped off.
      Although you do have a catchy video title it's not the definitive answer to all non spinning odometers on all cars. Your audience should be aware of that.

    Another great, easy to follow video! I am wondering why you didn’t put any grease on the new gears. It looked like there was grease on the old parts.
    Also, I was thinking of cleaning the prongs on electrical connections in the engine bay and applying a tiny amount of dielectric grease to keep them clean and avoid corrosion, not to mention being easier to disconnect when servicing. What are your thoughts?
