  • In this video, I swap the fuses used to calibrate the speedometer in my 1989 K1500 with DIP switches. I believe this will work for 1988 to 1990 Trucks. The clusters I used came out of 88 to 90 trucks with different rear end and tire setups.
    0:00 - Intro and how I found out about it
    1:17 - Explanation of how the cluster is calibrated
    3:00 - Desoldering and removing the fuses
    5:26 - Installing the dip switches
    10:00 - Configuring the dip switches and going for a test drive
    11:00 - Demonstrating the wiper motor and board upgrade from a previous video
    The DIP switch that I used.

    Thanks for the video it was just what I was looking for. I just replaced the tires on my 1988 K1500 Silverado and went from the stock 235x75xR15 to a 31x10.5x15 tire. I removed the 7 fuses and replaced them with the 7 position dip switch as shown in the video. I checked the calibration chart but saw no combinations that was close to what I needed. I did try several of them though. After many tries I finally just turned all 7 on and started turning off different ones randomally (shooting in the dark you might say). After numerous attempts I finally hit on the right combination. For my 3.08 rear gear ratio and the 31x10.5x15 tire it was 4 and 5 off and all the rest on. Thanks again for the information.

      That's awesome! Kudos to you for trying all the combinations. I was excited to know that it was even possible to adjust it.

      @@MaqsVids It was a lot of trial and error and taking the speedo in and out but I am one that doesn't give up easily. On a funny note my neighbors thought I was going crazy going in and out of the neighborhood testing my adjustments. The speedo is now dead on the money correct.

    I'm currently refreshing the running gear on my 89 Silverado (was my stepdad's truck). Speedo has always been wrong so this video should help me get it corrected. Ordered dip switches (2 just in case!) and solder vacuum today. Thanks for your videos and contributing to the gmt community.

    When removing stuff that has the bent over tabs like that I snip from the top side with side cutters. That way you're not having to pry out from the top like you did, which risk pulling the copper trace off of the board. It's annoying that they flip all of the legs over like that. Another thing I do with the solder sucker is that I flow new solder onto the old solder in order to get a better 'melt'. Seems to allow me to get 100% solder removal much easier. Thanks for the video!

    • @MaqsVids
      @MaqsVids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great tip! I will use it. I have pulled a trace away from an old board before. It makes my heart sink. And it's usually the last one.Thanks!

    I swapped in the wiper motor and a new board from my 1992 C3500 to my 1988 C1500. Couldn't buy a board locally for the 1988 motor. Works perfectly. Now I need to do this DIP switch due to swapping in a 3.73 gear set from the stock 2.73 and have 31x10.50 tires now. Thanks for the video..very helpful.

    Hey bud AWESOME video. I'm glad I found your channel cause I have a 1990 model obs. I was wondering if you know how to check if the speedometer gage is working because my speedometer and odometer are not working. They never worked when I purchased this truck. I replaced the speed sensor and it still isn't working. If you have any suggestions on what to do to get it fix I would really appreciate it.

    • @MaqsVids
      @MaqsVids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks!!! My odometer didn't work when I got mine too. But, I have not fixed a broken speedometer before. I wouldn't be surprised if it is something with the cluster. These trucks are simple compared to modern cars. It could be something simple. I did fix my odometer with a new gear though.

    • @supamario830

      @@MaqsVids thanks for replying so soon. I took my cluster apart and checked the odometer gears and I was able to spin the gear and when I did the numbers would move so I think my odometer gears work. I think they are not moving because my speedometer gage isn't working. Is there a way to check if its the cluster that isn't making my speedometer gage not working. Is there a way to check it ?

    I know this is an older video, but my question is, can you install the dip switch from the other side so you don't have to take cluster apart to change settings.

  • @cast-ironcowboy
    @cast-ironcowboy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So using these dip switches is it not necessary to reset the programming like the kit did back in the day? I'm talking about where you plugged the harness from the kit into the cluster and sent 12v across

    • @cast-ironcowboy
      @cast-ironcowboy ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to go to a junk yard and find an old cluster harness to make the reset harness but if these dip switches negate that step that'd be sweet

    • @MaqsVids
      @MaqsVids  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the first I head of a kit. I didn't have to do any of that. Once the switches are set, you are good to go.

    • @cast-ironcowboy
      @cast-ironcowboy ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok cool I'll give it a try. Yeah back then GM sold a kit it was a harness you plugged into the cluster to reset the speedometer. After that there was and 8 pin connector what they called "programming clip" that plugged into what you desoldered. Based on axle ratio and tire size there was a chart that would tell you what pins to remove and then you'd plug it into the back and good to go again. They discontinued that kit long ago so good luck finding one anymore. This is the best solution i think. Thanks a lot for the video!
