7:18 It's a real shame that so many photographers feel like this. Telling other people they must shoot on manual / meter correctly / develop their own film / learn darkroom printing or any other directive on what it means to be a "real" film photographer is just complete BS. I shoot on auto or aperture priority 90% of the time and have done for 27 years. In a recent video I watched I discovered legendary British photographer Martin Parr shoots on auto! Some of the toy cameras I have only have one aperture and shutter speed and I love them. Being a photographer in my eyes is exactly as you describe it Lucy, getting out there with a camera, having fun, working on composition and framing, being in that moment and the joy it brings when you get a few great shots in a row. Keep doing what you do and don't listen to any of the gatekeeping BS. Ultimately the only thing you should be judged on is your images, and the photos from this shoot are fantastic. Well done.
Absolutely blown away by this comment Matt. So pleased that you shared your thoughts here on this topic, I was considering cutting this part out as I didn’t want to bore people. So glad I left it in as this has made me feel so chuffed to be a photographer and have people in the community like you, who also think it’s more about having fun and enjoying the process in your own way. I have in the past felt really intimidated with photography and making these videos helped me over come that and I’ve had lots of really positive responses. Feeling all warm and fuzzy haha 😂🙋🏻♀️📸🎞🙏🏻🙌🏻 THANKYOU!

A year later but so very thankful for this Matt. I shoot on this exact camera and an even older Canon T50 which i adore. both are set to auto 100% of the time and i am so very happy with my results. reassurance wasnt necessary but so very appreciated!
You're right Matt. I shoot Film since 1984, as kid. I shoot ca. 60-70% on aperture mode, the rest is manual via 35mm SLR. Shoot whatever suits you. Into the end, it's all about your vision, your composition. I like Ektar 100 much, it's my #1 color film, after Pro Image 100. Thing is, it's really expensive nowadays. Every shot counts, every exposure counts. A good cut is about 12-15 keepers onto a 36 exposure roll, for myself. It doesn't work this way, always.
Thank you. Those streets and houses with the amber coloured windows bring back my memories of Brisbane suburbs. Love those sunny winder days. Cool music too. Great feels from this video.
A long time ago, I attended a class with a well known photographer (I won't quote his name cause I can't spell it) on metering and exposure with slide film. Someone mentioned color print film. His response, as best as I can remember, was "If you're using print film, just use your matrix meter, set your camera on program and fire away. You'll be fine." So there ya go!😉
Totally get it! I get a little stir crazy if I don't go out and practice photography for a couple of days! And yes, seeing all the film content on TH-cam, including your channel makes me itch to get out and shoot!
Hey Alex, thanks for your continued support and for watching! Good to hear you also feel the itch and urge to get out and shoot, we are in lockdown currently here and it’s rainy weather too 😣 hope you are well and safe where you are! 👍🏻🎞📸❤️
I think auto mode is great, no matter what people say. It's good ofc if you know how to shoot without it and everybody should look into that but sometimes you just want to have fun and just take photos without having to think, focusing entirely on the art and not the technical stuff. Loved the shots of the old cars with the dried leaves, and the buildings with the colourful wall painting really pop.
Hey Steve 👋🏻 thanks for watching and for this lovely comment too. I 💯 agree with you on the auto front, I have a few manual cameras I shoot sometimes and understanding how to use those is so important. I do like aperture priority mode on the F80 and F60 too. I really liked the car shots too and the way the colours popped on the houses and building was amazing 🤩 such a nice film stock. 👍🏻🎞
Hey Kyros 👋🏻 thanks for watching! Yes I normally shoot on aperture priority as well but auto is great for just not even thinking about the camera and just getting the shots you want. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏻🙋🏻♀️📸❤️

Super chill, the music reminded me a lot of The Kids Are All Right, one of my favorite movies 😊 I'm keen to try Ektar soon, I've heard it's really good for shooting half-frame (except portraits I guess) ✌
Glad you liked the music Christian, I often re watch this to hear the music too it’s one of my favourite things my partner has made. I haven’t seen that movie but definitely have always been meaning too. Ohhhhh half frame I want one so bad, we are trying to save money as we want to get a Mac book pro so it’s easier/faster to edit videos. I’ve also put my partner on a camera buying ban, after I bought a new point and shoot on eBay that is haha 😂
That's funny, I'm on a buying ban, too 😅 The Olympus EE models are automatic and work just like the Olympus Trip 35 with zone focusing, and that's a really fun camera to use 😊 Saving up for a better computer definitely sounds sensible, though ✌ PS. Definitely watch the film, I'm sure you'd love it 😊
Great video! I love Ektar. Even if it's a bit red at times for caucasian skin tones, those shots tend to be rare for me, and I enjoy the contrast and saturation that are largely missing from color film today.
The part where you mentioned shooting on auto made me chuckle because I remember watching a video where Sean Tucker (here on TH-cam) mentioned that he saw a list or blog that said if you don't know ALL these technical terms and composition techniques -- then you're not a real photographer! And he says that as a working photographer who did product and food photography, he maybe got just under half of everything listed correct. I'm paraphrasing, but something along those lines. Unfortunately, we have a few gatekeepers and snobs that tell beginners the wrong information and say they have to meter manually, or learn rule of thirds or golden ratio. As a beginner myself, I just go and shoot, and typically shoot in P or some type of auto mode like you're doing, and it works perfectly 90-95% of the time :) Technical information can be useful too, but it's not necessary to take an amazeballs shot. And so I hope more people starting out in photography find the courage to just go out and shoot :)
💯 my friend!!!! Couldn’t agree more and all the gatekeeping is such BS who cares what someone knows, doesn’t know or is doing when they shoot!? I'm used to using manual on my cameras because that's what I always use. I can usually nail focus pretty quickly. However, I'm certainly not adverse to using every other function. Especially, auto, when I couldn't be bothered to focus manually or I just want to have fun and not worry about all the settings. I have some Ektar in the fridge at present. Might take some into town and go to the botanic gardens, see what I can get there. Go for a wander around the marina and get some shots of the boats and buildings. Who knows :)

And tell your partner the music was perfect. (And since I praised so many other things I should probably mention that the Ektar photies were cool too lol)
I do normally shoot on *aperture priority with the F60 I find that actually works best for me and I got some unwanted bokeh in the flower photos sometimes cause auto was choosing the f stop.
