    Nice shoots, I like them both. Portra looks more creamy yellowish while the Ektar has more punch and reds.

      It's look is undeniably classic. A favorite of mine for sure, though there are cheaper alternatives, Kodak still has it in the back with Portra. There's no full stop replacement for it.

    The Ektar looks better in these shots, but when i shoot Portra it usually looks better maybe its the scanning.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tallaganda83 Perhaps! I tried to be as thorough as I could and I've been getting MUCH better at scanning but it's always a possibility! Miranda also likes the Ektar shots better.

    • @mondedusilence
      @mondedusilence 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...and I was looking for a comment like this before I write the same thing. Awesome shots, Ektar is magnificent but something is off with the scans (?) or post processing of Portra. Looks a bit dull. Yes, Portra is more "creamy" and "pastel", but this roll looks a bit off. Nevertheless, great video :)

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, don't worry this is FAR from the last time we will shoot with the Portra! Hopefully I'll do a lot better scanning them next time. I've learned a lot about the scanning process since shooting this episode. We'll see what the future holds!

    • @tallaganda83
      @tallaganda83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't actually insulting the Portra more complementing the Ektar, i am yet to shoot a roll I'm happy with, i wish i could get it right as I'm more into landscapes, i use Velvia 50 for landscapes and its mind blowing in the right conditions, but has terrible dynamic range is useless for people.

    I love both films but in mid-day light I prefer portra films. I think their lower contrast handles that sort of light better. The results in the video seems to show that. I use Ektar quite a bit in large format and for morning and evenings it reigns supreme for me. Love the video and enjoyed seeing the side by side comparison.

    They are two color films that I have always loved. I have the Ektar loaded in the Pentax Me Super and the Portra loaded in the Pentax P30n. Depending on the subject I choose which body to use. The result is always magnificent even if the two films have changed a bit over the years.

    Good video. Your shots mirror my experience with Ektar & Portra. I prefer the look of Ektar for daytime outdoor shots. I have a hard time getting the look I want when shooting outdoors with Portra on landscapes. On the other hand for people shots Portra looks great.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I was happy with the shots I got with Portra they certainly didn't come out the way I was expecting them too. Definitely takes practice. I foresee needing to shoot through a number of rolls of the stuff before really being able to take advantage of shooting it.

    Fills my photographic heart with joy to see young people shooting film, lovely pastel quality to the porta and the Ektar as more kick, I would like to shoot that sea scape with B&W on 10X8 on a very early morning with the sea fog rolling in.....Nice review and watch out for the great whites.:):)

      :D Harry thanks so much for your wonderful comments and thanks for watching, these two films are certainly world renowned for a reason! Great video! I love the side by side comparisons, really helped to show the difference. Interestingly, for me there was no clear winner. Sometimes I liked the softer pastel tones of the Portra, and sometimes I like the blue shadows of the Ektar. Although, I still find Portra easier to shoot because of the exposure latitude, but that's just me being lazy.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same! Incredibly, painfully lazy. Still. Maybe in the future I'll get a little un-lazy and let Miranda shoot the Portra and I'll shoot some of the Ektar. It's really a gorgeous film if the camera is pointed at the right subject. We'll revisit these films again in the future! Thank you SO MUCH for watching Brian!

  • @billfowler5856
    @billfowler5856 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks. Great video concept - very helpful. Looks to me like Portra wins for portraits (duh) where dark shadows might be unflattering, but Ektar wins for architecture or other shots that need more depth and clarity. To me the Portra shots look a little flat and over-exposed by a stop or two. Not saying that's always a bad thing - just another tool in the camera bag. Or maybe a light meter issue?

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention novice editing. I definitely over did these. We've been looking forward to revisiting this episode for a long time with the new skills we've gained from our experiences. For me, Ektar wins with better/stronger contrast and it resists being too yellow far better than Portra.

  • @DonFather
    @DonFather 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is too much hate out there for Ektar and, IMHO, too much love for Portra. I have been very disappointed in Portra for shots in the shade and it may be because I exposed at box speed (maybe overexposing would have done it justice). I think it was the first couple shots you took on this video with Portra, same result as my disappointments. I hate the magenta/redish tint. I think Portra should be shot in full sunshine to look proper. Ektar, however, can be shot with shadows and sunshine mixed in the same scene because of its wide dynamic range. Just don't shoot people with it. I really enjoyed how the Ektar results looked from Miranda. Thanks for the vid!

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! Glad you found some truth in it! We try not to "review" the films when we're done for this very reason. People should come to their own conclusions, we're just here to share the fun of shooting film and examples of what each stock /could/ look like. I love Portra, but the Ektar is DEFINITELY extremely underrated!

    Good comparison of 2 very good films. The Ektar gave colours that popped, whilst the Portra is a little bit more mellow. Nice sharp and good exposures withe some good composition. At $8 or $9 a roll, these films are not cheap. Personally myself, I would shot these if I went somewhere nice, just like you guys did, but for general shooting around my neighbourhood, I'm sticking to the cheaper films like Fuji Superia or Kodak Gold. Nice video and photographs as usual, keep up the good work.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah the films are on the pricey side, but at least they get 36 exposures! I agree though, going with something cheaper for general shooting is probably your best option.

    Another brilliant video. Now I know there is no logic to this, but I really like Ektar at 35mm with modern lenses and I shoot Portra 160 at 120. I always find it slightly poignant that some of the places that are most photogenic, for texture, colours and social comment, also show the failings of society, and I think that is that is a world wide phenomenon.

    So, did you come to a conclusion as to which stock you prefer?
    I personally adore Portra 400, to the point where it's pretty much the only thing I'll load in my rangefinder - combined with the Sonnar it gives the perfect old-world feel.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Horst G. Burkhardt Honestly I think we were a bit biased in deciding. I really liked the Portra much better but Miranda was a fan of the Ektar. Each liking our own film made it difficult to come to a firm conclusion. I think we're going to have Chris and Rheannon do a critical capture without us and let them come to a decision on that since they weren't involved in the shooting. (Portra is better, don't tell Miranda I said that though lol!)

      Cool, cool. I'll check it out. Follow up question... what do you like about the Minolta cameras over other brands or systems? I have a X-700 that I love because it's so portable and easy to use. However, I still the "tank-y-ness" of the Olympus OM cameras - and the Zuiko lenses. Thoughts?

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm being honest with you it's just a use bias. The 570 was my first camera. The meter has always been spot on. Every roll I've put through it has come out spectacularly. I simply haven't had a reason to move on to anything else. It's probably pretty easy to tell, and I say this a lot in the comments, but we're all very new to film, we aren't experts by any means.
      THAT SAID, we do have a camera exchange program we just set up with one of our new viewers. He'll be sending us a new camera to try out every week or so. So keep an eye out for that, you'll be seeing much more variety on Active Capture in the near future.

      Dean, I'm so sorry to hear that. Every episode we try new techniques to make filming on the go for Active Capture the highest quality possible for you guys. Smoothness and frame rate are two of our constant battles we always seem to be fighting. We record every episode of Active Capture on a Nikon D750 with a hand held Neewer rig. There are better alternatives out there but they're not really within the shows budget at the time. We hope to upgrade in the future. All of our episodes are shot at 60fps and rendered out at 24fps in an attempt to smooth some of the jerky motion you've noted. While we do our best to provide a consistent viewing experience it can be difficult to achieve still motion when "running and gunning" so to speak. AC is very fast paced and mobile during filming so it's not well suited for tripods. Someday I hope to invest in a nice gimbal or mounted stabilization system.
      I'm sorry you had a bad experience watching our video :( I hope you give us another chance in the future. The quality of our productions will only get better as time goes on. Thanks for your kind comments and support.
      -Alex @ Active Capture

    I've used both, and I like ektar much better for both portraits and landscapes, but these rocks and ruins look so much better on portra. Its pastel, less contrasty and saturated look adds some atmosphere and mystery to this place ,whereas ektar is too in your face because the contrast and saturation bring up too much details, and the place is not as atmospheric. The wall at 5:56 though looks better on ektar because of the same reasons other stuff looks worse - the texture of the wall and those crevices look better because of the contrast and saturation

  • @jacopoabbruscato9271

    Shooting mainly portraits, I tried Ektar only once and found it really too punchy for my liking. The model was wearing a yellow woolen sweater and it was so intense and saturated it took away the attention from the face. Portra 160 is my to-go film for color, if enough light is available.

    Great video and wonderful shots. I might have missed it in the video, but were you shooting the films at box ASA or were you both shooting at ASA 100?

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Heshka Great question! We didn't mention this in the video, good catch. We shot both films at ASA 100 because we thought it would offer the closest comparison. you could argue that the Portra was over exposed but I don't think 60 speed is enough to botch the comparison! ^^ I'm glad you enjoyed the episode! Thanks!

      Active Capture Portra 160 looks perfect over exposed, just like most C41.. Except Ektar of course ☺️.
      Nice video.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think the 60 ASA over exposure looked great, since the film was shot at 100. Just has that "look". Really great film to shoot with. It sucks that I can't just shoot it all the time, but I have a channel to run! ^^ Thanks for your comment!

      Active Capture If you get the opportunity, have a go at shooting Eastman [Kodak] Double X B&W movie film, 250 ASA Boxspeed but easily pushed to 6400 or pulled back to 50 ASA or even lower to increase/decrease contrast & apparent grain.. Superb quality and relatively cheap when buying a length of film and a bulk loader.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spehmaster G. I've made a note of it! sounds fun! Bulk loading is still a little intimidating to me but the best time might totally be the present. Either way I'll shoot this film for sure. It sounds so versatile.

    • @Lawful_Rebel
      @Lawful_Rebel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Active Capture perhaps Portra may benefit on some shots with a linear polariser. Ektar however, Is saturated enough I think.
      Saying that, I usually find a polarising filter add an unrealistic look to a photo.. I'm not really a fan. Rather than a polarising filter, although they can sometimes work well, I much prefer using ND filters more, either for landscapes on a tripod or when I'm pushing ektar 2 stops in bright sun.. It tones down the saturation, and adds a touch of grain.. It's hard to describe. I think It looks kinda like kodachrome.. I like it.

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Occasionally we use a basic UV filter but I try not to filter too much for Active Capture episodes because I want the episodes to represent the film qualities out of the box, but I totally agree. ND filters are excellent as well. That said, I did kind of personally enjoy the desaturated look of the Porta pictured here. I couldn't tell you why ^^ Ohhhhh kodachrome. I hope some day I might be graced with the opportunity to shoot it. Only time will tell!

    • @Lawful_Rebel
      @Lawful_Rebel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Active Capture It's nice to hear Kodak Ektachrome is coming back.. In name at least, we shall see.
      However, I don't think we'll see the like of Kodachrome again. The process was so particular and involved, and It is required a highly trained technician to complete. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to use Kodachrome, it was already discontinued when I took up photography..

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I never got to shoot ektachrome either! Obviously the four of us are new to film photography (the AC channel is kind of about that journey) so anything before maybe six months ago I have missed. Can't wait to get a roll of that day one.

      Game or Nothing Tag like crazy! These things take a long time. I have a feeling TH-cam's search results are pretty biased against channels with low sub counts which doesn't make a ton of sense, how are small channels supposed to grow?
      At any rate, we put in a lot of work on social media which has really gotten us as far as we've come. I think word of mouth is obviously powerful so if you enjoy the channel please share it with your friends and family, ask them to sub, etc. It makes a huge difference.

      You clearly didn't see the whitewashed highlights at half a minute. The dynamic range of film is far superior, you can't even see the potential of film if you just look at screens. That's not even mentioning the fact it's a lot more satisfying to shoot with and more easier on the eye if you're into more natural looking things

    • @ActiveCapture
      @ActiveCapture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +yashicat5 Obviously both have their benefits but Yeah that background at half a minute was some rough shooting and a still film frame of the same shot would have looked much nicer I think, especially when considering dynamic range.
