@thapelomonqa3445 couple radiator and coolant leaks. Like the water pump a few times. Thermostat a few times and water block on the side of the motor. Finally had to change the transmission at 945k kilometers but with a new transmission it is still going strong
I've only ever had ford focuses. I had a 2006 for a long time, got my brothers 2007. I got busy stressed and distracted and hadn't checked my oil in a while, killed it. Now I've got a 2018. I've only had it like a week now but I love it.
I had my sneaking suspicion about the added vvt and di, but it looks like they have held up well. I think rust will be the reason why I have to eventually park mine.
The 2.0 liter NA in my Focus has been solid. I've taken it on two 1700 mile road trips running at 75mph down the interstate all day long, no problems. The engine is really well matched to the car, good power reserve when needed. And no turbo reliability issues to deal with.
From my experience these engines LOVE to rev! I have had 3 in my life so far. I had a 2000 which had the 2.0 Zetec. My mom drove it once and it ran out of oil. She drove it home with the oil light on. I put oil in it and it lasted another 6k miles til we traded it for a new car. I had an 05 Zx3. I miss it, I had to sell it. Eventually I ended up with my 05 Focus sedan with 224k miles on it. It's still such a fun car to drive. Its crazy how responsive it is when I put my foot down! I just changed a valve cover gasket, and oil. It's been running high milage advanced synthetic. I love these 2.0 Duratec engines.
My 2013 ford C-max as a modified version of this engine. It’s tough as nails. Mine has 249,000 miles on it doesn’t burn a drop of oil, and still runs like day one. I personally change my oil every 6000 miles with synthetic. I swear it’s so dang tough- even though I mostly drive for economy, and religiously, maintain my car, I also floor my accelerator, at least once a day. But the biggest testimony was when I had a fuel injector fail on vacation. Low RPMs that engine shook so violently it was quite terrifying, but it higher speed. It wasn’t too bad we were in the middle of nowhere and I ended up driving for close to 200 miles on three cylinders at about 80 mph. The hybrid system definitely helped, but I was fearful at the time it would cause damage. I changed the fuel injector and went about my business. That was three years ago and like 80,000 miles ago.
Great video. I have a 2012 5sp manual, 2.0, SE. 197k miles. bought it new in Sept 2011. Have replaced the water pump, the valve cover gasket and solenoid gaskets. Replaced front struts and back shocks. No problems with the engine. Can still wind out 2nd,3rd,4th gears and damn near red line them with no issues. Just got worse issue to date, the electronic steering assist malfunction check handbook message. I was getting this message for about the last 3 years, could always clear it by restarting the engine, but now won't go away, no power steering. Just picked up a used full electronic rack and pinion assembly from a salvage/wrecking yard for $95...this could be the most involved repair to date, but not worth the $2500 estimate a garage gave me to do the work.
I got a used 14 Focus 5 speed manual and I drive about 200 mi. a day mostly highway. I'm always amazed at how good this engine is in both fuel economy and power. Paired with the manual trans I believe this car is one of the best for daily driving and some occasional spirited sessions on a windy road. I can get almost 40 MPG staying between 70-75 mph, and the 5th gear isn't even tall. At 70 mph its at around 3000 rpm already but it will climb a decent hill in 5th gear so no need to downshift. Putting direct injection and vct on this 2 liter is one of the best decisions Ford has ever made. It's rated at 160hp but feels like it has more due to the nice power band and torque. Definitely makes long drives a lot less boring.
Just bought a used 2018 EcoSport with the 2.0. Fell in love with this motor right away. I love the fact it has a timing chain instead of a timing belt like the 1.6 in my old Fiesta. Good thing I stood clear of the 1.0 ecoboost motor. I've yet to hear a good review of that motor.
I have a 2019 Ecosport. Good to hear about the chain. Good to hear about the engine. Mine has about 20k miles on it. I wish it got the mileage my Focus did.
I have the 2.0 duratec in my 2007 mk2 Ford Focus ghia estate. Which I've owned since 2017, never had an issue with it, apart from replace the EGR valve. It's currently got 133,300 miles on it, feels like a solid engine, still pulls hard when needed, loads of low down grunt, they seemed to be tuned for low to mid range torque, very economical on fuel ⛽️
Heard about this engine, and it seems like an extremely good engine as you say. I was thinking of getting a Volvo s60 or Vw golf mk4 but a Focus with this engine is very compelling to say the least. 146 horsepower with the consumption more or less resembling a 1.4-1.6l engine with 110 or less hp. Timing chain so less maintenance heavy. Everything just points to this being my next ”beater” honestly. Thanks alot for the video. Hopefully my dad who hates Fords won’t dissown me, lol.
@ Sounds great It’ll be manual so that’s good. I’ll get an older one though if i’ll get one, probably around modelyear 2005-2007 ish. Are those still as good?
155,000 on my 2015 haven’t had any engine issues clutch forks are going out though also had a few electrical issues I figured out. One of which turn out to be the positive battery cable being corroded through the cable and underneath the terminal ford themselves couldn’t solve that one took a lot of research then I went back to the basics and found and resolved the issue!
Miss my focus.. 2k oil changes w clear flood. Trans service 15k as well as coolant. Unfortunately threw rod at almost 160k. Had to baby it to safe plsce to shut it down. Didn't really get to 4k, and i wonder if that could've been the problem as in loaded up and boom?
wow a blown up 2.0? thats not something i hear often. at least the engines are a dime a dozen, and you wont have to worry about getting a bad used engine
I have a 2015 ford focus titanium automatic 2.0lt with 130k miles hopefully it keeps going strong i drive 150 miles daily lets see how long it last with good maintenance
Eventually I hope to put a turbo on mine/ or swap in a 2.0 ecoboost or a t5 Volvo, but it would definitely be cheapest to work with the stock block. I don’t know what the stock internals are but how much boost could they reliably handle with a good tune/ supporting mods? Thanks and have a good one
Basically the same engine in 06-15 Miatas. The only known issue is the plastic coolant reservoir cracking and causing a failure, or breakage caused by aftermarket boost. Mine sees regular visits to 7,500 rpm and is occasionally run absolutely flat-out for as long as the brake fluid can sustain, and it always has clean golden oil at the fill line. Just like my ZX2 always did. I'm extremely impressed with the durability of these things. I just wish it also bad the berries to avoid being punked by the S2000 and K-swap army.
I have over 165,000 miles on my 2012 hatchback with manual transmission and it still runs and sounds like new. At 120,000 I used Marvel Mystery Oil for the first time before an oil change and my fuel mileage in the summer (Ohio weather) went from 36mpg in mixed driving to 38 - 40mpg in mixed driving, and remains that way today. The only non-regular maintenance item I had was the coolant outlet flange failed on me while on a highway. I stopped and got more coolant and watched my temperature to keep from over heating. It could go for about 10 or 15 miles before the coolant got too low. The gasket and gasket flange had cracked. Replaced it with a new part and it's been all good since. My co-worker has a 2014 hatchback with manual transmission and he has over 300,000 miles on it. His also runs and sounds like new. Agreed, these are awesome engines. I expect this to be my last car. I will be retiring soon, but will still have an active life. I drive about 16,000 miles a year as well. The body is still in good shape too, so I'll replace the engine when it needs it.....at about 750,000 miles??? We'll see. I do need to change the valve cover gasket though. No biggie.
Hello sir, i am from the Philippines. May i ask if the 2.0 engine, when u remove the dip stick while engine is running, is it normal that the oil is splashing out? All of the 2013-2015 2.0 focus here in our country, it does splash oil when i remove the dip stick. Is it the same there in your country? Thanks you
Hi, I know i'm not the gentlemen in the video, and you posted this question a whole month ago, and I should and will tell you, I am NOT a mechanic. But to my knowledge, oil should NOT be splashing or overflowing up the tube where the oil dip stick is when you pull it out, with the engine running. Again i'm not a mechanic, but I think you should at the very least take it to a mechanic (if you haven't done so already). The only thought that cames to my mind, is your vehicle may have excessive engine crankcase pressure, and this is causing the oil to be pushed out, I THINK this may be caused by bad seals (don't know which ones) or a hole or other defect on the piston or the piston lining that is letting compression from the engine combustion chamber to go down into said crankcase. Or excessive oil pressure, but I don't know how that could have happened.
@@DoeJohn887 thank you for replying. I had a reply from a FORD mechanic/specialist here on YT. And he confirmed that for the 2014 onwards with Flex Fuel 2.0 Duratec engine, oil splashes are present in dip stick and Oil cap. Which are normal for this engine even when they were brand new. Cheers!
My question for this, my ford focus 1.6L mk3, normal temp is around 105c via OBD reading when on a traffic, sometimes 108c when uphill traffic, during high speeds it drops around 92-95 which is normal for me but the 105c when slow moving is a bit high compared on my other car, My coolant level is all normal, no leak, new thermostat, FAN is all good still powerful.
Wow! You can really drive the crap out of this thing!! I've had one for 2 years but never race-carred it out of fear of damage. I think I'ma try to race-car it after work.
2 Questions: Mechanic keeps saying I need the timing cover gasket replaced as it is weeping oil slowly. I check the oil regularly and never see the level drop although there is visible blackening around the timing cover area. I assume this is the leaking oil. How much of an issue is this? Engine has just over 115k mi on it. Its a 2014 model. Have had multiple gasket replacements at this point. Otherwise engine has been rock solid. Is this a common thing? Second, what's your take on the automatic DCTs in this generation of Focus? I know they are notorious but I really haven't had any issues with mine aside from the TCM needing replacement.
@@TonyBologna126 hi. I'd say 70% of focuses will develop a slow front cover leak. I've never seen it bad enough to drop the oil level. I've never worried about it, I've had 5 or more focuses and never resealed them. And, as far as the dps6 transmission, I like it. It is quirky, but with the new redesigned tcm and a fresh clutch and fork job, it'll drive anywhere and not give you any trouble
These are good engines. I have a '10 SES sedan (US version). Keep up with services and all is well. Its a shame the 12+ models had that awful transmission b/c the engines are golden. Mine has 161k now, doesn't use any oil at all, I change with synth blend at 5k intervals.
The Duratec/MZR 2 and 2.5L engines are fantastic engines as long as you maintain them. The 2.3, which is found in the first Gen fusion/mazda6 and some first Gen Mazda3 models, are a little bit different. The 2.3s were good engines but they didn't take abuse as well as the 2.0 and 2.5. If you drive them gently and change the oil regularly, they will last. However, I would choose a 2.0 or 2.5 over a 2.3 any day.
My EU MK2 Focus is at 290 000km and she still going strong and I've even pushed her to 136 MP/H. Ford has done a really good job on these 2.0 Duratec engines.
I got this Engine in a 2005 Focus C Max with 245000 km. The Valve stem seals must be made now. But I can't find anyone who wants to repair it when it's installed.
My Dad has 450 000km on his 2009. My 2012 di version has 307 000km frequently lead footed kms on it. Both still run healthy and have the 5spd manual. The rust is what will kill those cars.
I had a Focus. It wore out around the engine. They stopped selling them in US. Now I have an Ecosport with that 2.0 liter engine. I hope what he says is correct.
@daniellarson3068 the ecosport 2.0s were made in a different country. There were several failures when they were new, but I haven't seen a failure in a long time
@BigBensCarsAndCycles clean title and carfax. Looks like it had regular maintenance done. I was on the highway, suddenly there was a very strange smell and ticking started. After exiting highway and safely pulling over, 90+% power was gone. Could barley get her parked safely.
This is common at least in the UK. I have 2 engines I'm breaking in my garage at the moment one was at 55k one was at 62k ones a fiesta st and the other is a Mazda mx5 nc. If you go to the UK eBay or Facebook market places you will see how common this is. Both of the ones I picked up have spun the big end bearings, one also spun the small ends too.
Great vid as usual! Would a 2017 Ford Focus have a low coolant alarm? My overflow bottle leaks and has to be toppped off. Also, do they have an overheat alarm? Thanks for being awesome 👍🏻 😎
Thanks for watching! It doesn't have a low coolant alarm, but has an overtemp alarm. The degas bottle is an integral part of the cooling system and a Crack can cause pressure loss and overheating. So I'd get one ordered. The aftermarket ones (Dorman mainly) have issues where the hole for the small hose is too large and causes a leak
So if its the 2.0 duratec that the mx5 nc uses, the volvo c30 and the ford fiesta st, in the uk these are utter crap. Bottom ends go and they knock, it seems like changing the oil twice as often as recommended is the only way to keep them alive, the eco bosts are worse though somehow. For the mazda mx5 nc the engines with the forged crank from 2009 onwards are a lot more reliable, but the other cars didn't get this upgrade.
The 2.0 duratec is actually a Mazda MZR engine used by Ford without the variable valve timing and a few other slight changes. Not sure where you got info from if this engine is unmodified and has basic servicing done it is solid and extremely reliable.
What i already believed but glad to hear from another FOMOCO tech, body and suspension highly modified but engine has never been cracked open other than VC gasket replacements. had a coil pack fail and head temp plug get old and crumbly from heat cycles but other than that it is great. It is tuned still has OEM cat, but full 3" homemade dual exhaust. It gets better mileage after changing to Copper plugs that I change every 10k or 2 oil changes and has a modified stock airbox with KN drop in, gives 45+ mpgs on highway cruising. Love my US Mk2
Welp. Add a third 2.0 mess to your study. User error. EGR popped. Stopped the cat, got driven home. Head is at the machine shop seeing if we can salvage. ‘12 Transit Connect CNG.
Just a case of regular maintenance, and in this engines case the carbon build up with the direct injection etc. Shame the focus won't exist anymore, and the fiesta.
Overheated? I can't even get my 2.0 to operating temp under 70 degrees without blocking the whole front with cardboard. I bet that heat was cooking for the time it ran.
I currently have a focus four-cylinder non-eco-boost solid little engine, you take care of it you’ll take you whatever you want

@evangillis1387 what signs do I need to look out for when the water pump is about to go out? Should I wait for it to fail?

Mechanic keeps saying I need the timing cover gasket replaced as it is weeping oil slowly.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Alright good to know I haven't been neglecting anything. Thanks for the quick response.
These are good engines. I have a '10 SES sedan (US version). Keep up with services and all is well. Its a shame the 12+ models had that awful transmission b/c the engines are golden. Mine has 161k now, doesn't use any oil at all, I change with synth blend at 5k intervals.
It's a shame the Mk3 Focus had a problematic DCT. Other than the gearbox, this car was amazing.
Thank you
@@miskomarkovic3446 you're welcome 👍 thanks for watching
My Dad has 450 000km on his 2009. My 2012 di version has 307 000km frequently lead footed kms on it. Both still run healthy and have the 5spd manual. The rust is what will kill those cars.
which ford pick-up had-one?
Apparently the maverick hybrid uses the architecture of the 2.5L Duratec on its engine
Hey Big Ben, are the Duratec HE 2.0 interference engines? Thx
How often should I replace the coolant
@@zhaoyuxu1053 I'd do it every few years
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles My first time changed mine was 10 years with 150k and the old one still works fine.
Hi Ben, what state is your mechanic shop in?
@@webgoodgame7615 hi, I'm in Virginia
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles damn it, all the good Ford mechanics are in the other side of the world!
Mines on 226000 miles and all good
Automatic transmission or manual?
Hm I have a 2017 ford fusion with this engine, hope it lasts.
The reason i bought a 4 cylinder EcoSport
i got a 2006 ford focus zx4 with 317,300miles
I had a Focus. It wore out around the engine. They stopped selling them in US. Now I have an Ecosport with that 2.0 liter engine. I hope what he says is correct.
@daniellarson3068 the ecosport 2.0s were made in a different country. There were several failures when they were new, but I haven't seen a failure in a long time
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Yep - I learned it was assembled in India. So far So good.
I blew one rod bearing and almost a second in one instance. 2018 focus and had less than 55k miles i did buy it used at 40k
Very weird! There must be some explanation for that. Was it a rebuilt title car? or poorly maintained before you maybe?
@BigBensCarsAndCycles clean title and carfax. Looks like it had regular maintenance done.
I was on the highway, suddenly there was a very strange smell and ticking started. After exiting highway and safely pulling over, 90+% power was gone. Could barley get her parked safely.
Was yours the 1.0L? I see those with bad rod bearings due to oil pressure issues
@@TurboTurdBurglar negative 2.0
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles link for good one?
I wouldn't drive the toy car 2011 and newer..
But my 2013 focus. 162000. miles runs like new.
Is this the duratec 2.0L?
Yes
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles how do you feel about the six speed automatic transmission in the 2018 Ecosport ?
@patrickmorales98 the 6f35? Not a bad transmission if you overmaintain it
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesaint it 6f15 in Ecosport? I thoght they throw it with 1.0 ecoboost and 2.0 duratec(I may be wrong).
My baby girl have 290,000 and she now started to give me issues
What i already believed but glad to hear from another FOMOCO tech, body and suspension highly modified but engine has never been cracked open other than VC gasket replacements. had a coil pack fail and head temp plug get old and crumbly from heat cycles but other than that it is great. It is tuned still has OEM cat, but full 3" homemade dual exhaust. It gets better mileage after changing to Copper plugs that I change every 10k or 2 oil changes and has a modified stock airbox with KN drop in, gives 45+ mpgs on highway cruising. Love my US Mk2
Sick dude, what brand plugs did you use?
Welp. Add a third 2.0 mess to your study. User error. EGR popped. Stopped the cat, got driven home. Head is at the machine shop seeing if we can salvage. ‘12 Transit Connect CNG.
A transit connect is that not the diesel engine ?
Just a case of regular maintenance, and in this engines case the carbon build up with the direct injection etc. Shame the focus won't exist anymore, and the fiesta.
Overheated? I can't even get my 2.0 to operating temp under 70 degrees without blocking the whole front with cardboard. I bet that heat was cooking for the time it ran.
@@billvrtis1009 might need a thermostat
2.0 best engine I've sold over 20 of the only had 1 that had coolant leak and seized . The transmission another story
Yup.. i can tell it's reliable..
Dct sucks
My focus engine failed. I money shifted 😂🪦
@nathanglacken32 if you're near Virginia I'd be interested in tearing it apart for a video (the engine core)
