Howdy! Roman and I both love driving the CX-5. The RAV4 is a better choice if you need a third row or want V6 power, but the Mazda CX-5 is a blast to drive, it's more contemporary and its economy is outstanding.
I recently bought the 2014 CX5 AWD sport trim. I test drove and researched each car in this class. After weeks of researching and test driving I rank them as CX5>Tiguan>Forester>Outlander Sport>the rest>>>>>Juke... The Juke felt like i was driving a huge jeep with HUGE blind spots. The Outlander would've been a great car but it has no power and their brand holds no value. I surprisingly loved the Tiguan and CX5 but the CX5 won by a hair. Close choice between them two
@gothatway09 Well, it's basically a car with more ground clearance and a hatch, so.... Note the move away from calling this class "SUV" to "CUV" to often just "crossover" now.
I own a mazda cx-5 2013 and I love it... in hindsight I wish I waited until the 2014 model that has the 2.5liter skyactive, or the soon to come diesel version. the 2.5 would give the extra umph to pass on the highway at speed.. I often find my gas pedal on the floor to pass slower drivers. This car is sporty, and quick off the line for an AWD. it's spunky.. the engine just needs some more umph in the higher revs.. in the winter on the snow with the stock rolling treads (yokohama's) the car drives much like my parents subaru's.. and the ability to tow up to 2000lbs is an added bonus when I plan to get an ATV or two.
We can buy a brand new Subaru Forester entry level with plenty of features in the preferred 5 speed manual of $20,500. Our 04 was $17,170 brand new and is still going strong with 140k. Great vehicles.
+Jake Cake This is now the base engine. The 2.5 184 HP, the interiors have been upgraded the info center is now larger, an suspension has been tweaked and so has the AWd system.
Do you guys do multiple runs when you do 0-60s or 1/4 miles. On the newer cars they sense when you get lead footed and slowly give you more the more lead footed you are. In my 2013 Patriot the first time I do a 0-60 I might get 12 seconds but the 2nd and third I'm just over 10. Just something I noticed with the new electronics trying to be the most fuel efficient they can definitely mask what the engine actually is capable of.
At 15:54 - that useless piece of plastic in the front, right underneath the light is sprinkler cover. When you pull the plastic lever like when you want to sprinkle your windshield, that plastic cover pulls out automatically and the water sprays your front lights. It does that only once per ride. and they made it so good that you couldn't figure it out. interesting that ford engineer who stands in the near didn't correct you.
one thing i don't get! why does the acura rsx type s have a 2.0 ltr inline 4 that produces a whopping 201 hp. why don't they stick that k20a2 (rsx type s engine) in the Honda CRV? let me know what you think..
Don't the Ford Escape have those rear stabilizer bars attached to the rear axles? Whatever small SUV they are on, I was always weary of buying a vehicle that had that design. We bent one of these rear stabilator bars hitting a curb/median on a Taurus car and the car was totally undriveable. Your Comments ? You Guys make Great, Honest Reviews, Thank You!
I don't know about the 2013 CX-5, but the 2014 has a beefier 2.5L engine. The base Sport trim CX-5 has the low-powered engine reviewed in here. Touring and Grand Touring trim comes with the 2.5 185 HP engine.
I'm a bit surprised that you put the new Escape on here, if only because it doesn't seem like anyone's done a full off road look at it and its reputation in Europe (where its been on sale for a few years) doesn't seem to be very good if you go looking at TH-cam videos. I'd like to see you guys take it up the trail you seem to regularly use, along with the XV when it becomes available.
thanks, the off-roading reviews are important as we take these cars off the beaten track on many occasions. Maybe even more detail on its abilities and not-abilities would help. Cheers...
My understanding of AWD is to give better traction and control in bad conditions, rain, snow, ice. You say the Mazda does not impart confidence as an off roader. If you want confidence, buy an off road type vehicle!!! Jeep makes several, as does Toyota and Land Rover. Get the car designed for the activity, don't try to adapt the car you bought to do the activity you wish to do.
Hey Romanicagearguy: if these are considered SUV's what are Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, Land Rover Discovery, Mercedez GLK, G-wagon considered as ? Just saying guys...
These guys seem biased. I'm a Subaru guy who is probably going to buy a Crosstrek since my parents love their Forester. But I have to say, they knocked pretty hard on the Subaru even though it competed, if not beat, the Ford and the Mazda. For example the Ford beat the Subaru's 60mph time, but only because the Subaru was done on a dirt back road... Not to mention the Ford gets like 10mpg less than that of the Subaru. And then with the Mazda - These guys are just Mazda guys. The Subaru beats the Mazda in 60mph time and with fuel efficiency. The inside of a Subaru Crosstrek doesn't feel "cheap and plasticy," it feels rich in texture, but looks modest and not flashy. And last but not least, the Subaru comes with WAY more stuff on it, with better fuel milage, for less money than the Honda, Ford, and Mazda. Also something to mention, the Subaru will literally get you 31+ combined MPG. Most of these vehicles will get you around 24-26 MPG maybe depending on how you drive. In addition, the Subaru's resale price is extremely high so you won't have a problem reselling it, whereas the others drop substantially. But seriously, look at what you are getting in the car for the price tag. End Rant. P.S. I have no ties to Subaru. I am just someone who has done my research, test driven all of these, and can hear the biased comments in this video. Just something to think about for all those looking to buy.
Griffin Pearson Reviewers that are unbiased are few and far between, and IMO Consumer Reports being the most biased but there are plenty of others. This is why when I watch a video it is to see the vehicle while muted so I don't have to listen to the crap being said.
Griffin Pearson Dont!!! buy the Subee ...we too are loyal subee owners but they are facing class action suits regarding oil issues-faulty ring seal...and theuy are not highway worthy actuall the crosstrek is scary at posted speeds...
Honda had a design problem on the 2004 (and several other era CRV's). They lost a class action suit but never recalled the CRV for A/C related problems. Honda placed the A/C unit too close to the engine block with no heat shield. Now there are problems with the air bags exploding and sending shrapnel. I gave up on Honda and now drive a Subaru Forester Touring...
There is rumor that suzuki is pulling out of the US, all of my local suzuki dealers in Harrisburg Pa are shutting down slowly one by one... I dont think the Kizashi was what they thought it would be to save the company here... and once they got rid of the xl7 with the equinox redesign on a new platform it was a sure killer
It was always a car. The only difference now is that it doesn't look boxy. Like it or not, it was a smart move by Ford....just look at the sales numbers. More people obviously like the smoother, more rounded styling as compared to the older, boxy styling.
i'm a newly licensed driver, and i am an avid atv rider, i own a 2015 grizzly 700, i have been racking my brain on what to buy, i don't necessarily need a truck because i would never put a bike in the back anyway, it will always be trailered no matter what vehicle i end up with, i do mild off roading, and i will be taking friends camping and stuff, so i need space, i don't want to just run out and buy a vehicle, i want the best one for me, this crv has caught my eye, would you think this would be good for what i intend to use it for? if not, any other suggestions i could research?? all help from anyone is appreciated thank you.
I really really try to like your guys reviews but they just aren't up to par. For instance in the test of the CX-5, you stated that Mazda left a traditional hydraulic rack and pinion, it is in fact an electrical power steering system but it just happens to be so good you can't tell that it is. Also while i appreciate the real world 0-60 times it would help if they were all in the same conditions. The Subbie was done on a dirt road and not at nearly the same elevation as the others
The Subaru XV is "NOT" a Toyota Matrix; Subaru uses their own FB20 Boxer motor. Toyota and Subaru are sister companies however are seperate. Personally I would rather want an Impreza 5 door. I just wish it was offered with the FB25.
+Luis Coqui I don't know what else you could conclude other other then most buyers brought CR-V over the competition in it segment other then they feel it had the best features for their overall needs - is the best CUV!
People love to follow the Joneses. So they will often just do the same. Do research, take a few test drives, on your own. Not what the masses say. There is no one size fits all. After we did that we determined the CX5 was best. On the comparisons tests many have it #1 or # 2. Its certainly more stylish than the CR which looks like some type or fishbowl/space ship thing.
+Ashley Coe People buy cars now online too, without a physical dealership! Toyota has more U.S. dealerships then Honda and the Rav-4 is not the number one selling compact CUV!
I have a 2007 Daihatsu Terios 1.3 DX 4×4 and it has 18.5 cm ground clearance with a diff-lock system. Just perfect for off-road but can't say the same thing for the on-road...That little weak engine is, well, not enough for almost anything but off-road :-)
They're still made by Japanese companies, using many Japan-sourced parts, and likely completely engineered by Japanese people. My Legacy was assembled in Indiana. It's still a Japanese car.
I'd take the Subaru because when the going gets wet, rough or icy none of the others can hold a candle to it. It has the best AWD system by far. The Mazda looks nice but if how the car looks is the most important thing I wouldn't buy an SUV.
buildmorefarms100 I'm not saying a Subaru can't get stuck and tyres are a big factor I agree but the Subaru still has a better all wheel drive system than the others in this lineup so it's the one I would choose every time.
talkychris terrible road manners and theres the engine problem that is so bad theres class action lawsuits in many states-avoid all Subees right now ...we wish we hadnt bought our Crosstrek...The thing is a glorified suzuki samuri...Scary on the highway!!!
as I said, not everyone drives in the same environment as you. you brought up one day or two from 6 years ago where drivers of "real" suv's and trucks had an advantage. here in Wisconsin, there's maybe 1 or 2 days a year when I wish I had something better in snow, the other 363 days i'm fine with what you would call a "turd" which to you must be 99% of all vehicles made.
Not only did Honda report a 45% year-over-year increase in CR-V sales in August 2013, Honda also stole the best-selling SUV crown from the Ford Escape. And not just for the month of August. The CR-V is now 1960 units ahead of the Ford Escape for year-to-date utility vehicle leadership in the United States.
If your to lazy to watch this entire thing
4. Honda cr-v
3. Subaru impreza cross trek
2. Ford escape
1. Mazda cx-5
Nick Lake thank you!
Nick Lake mazda and ford are the best!
You guys do an awesome job with reviews.! I watched so many of them I feel like you are my friends. Keep up the great work.
Howdy! Roman and I both love driving the CX-5. The RAV4 is a better choice if you need a third row or want V6 power, but the Mazda CX-5 is a blast to drive, it's more contemporary and its economy is outstanding.
Hi Nathan and roman. Love watching your reviews. Informative and to the point, keep them coming and all the best!
I think that Honda and Subaru is earned better reputation throughout the years than others...my opinion of course!
I love your videos now. Very honest and very straightforward.
Ok.. so for light offroad such as a on established camping trails when things get a little wet, the CX-5 seems like a great choice...
@gothatway09 Well, it's basically a car with more ground clearance and a hatch, so.... Note the move away from calling this class "SUV" to "CUV" to often just "crossover" now.
WHY SO MANY DISLIKES? I find these guys very entertaining and fun, reviews are great too!
Good video. All those cars with a Chrysler 3.6 V6 pentastar= awesomeness
I don't know whether to like or hate this show and their reviews
Hey Roman, you complained about the crv's power knob of the radio. Honda removed it from the 2015 model all together.
Please help..thinking about buying either 2013 Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-5 which would you guys recommend. Thanks in advance for your expertise
I just bought a CrossTrek limited. The refinement and interior is a little bland, but it has the best off road capability, and awesome gas millage.
How do these crossovers compare to the Jeep Patriot Trail Rated?
I love your videos. Can you guys review the new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, I am looking to buy it, but there hasn't been much reviews on it!
I own a mazda cx-5 2013 and I love it... in hindsight I wish I waited until the 2014 model that has the 2.5liter skyactive, or the soon to come diesel version. the 2.5 would give the extra umph to pass on the highway at speed.. Agreed, waiting for a mazda turbo diesel to compete with the golf in the mazda 3.
We can buy a brand new Subaru Forester entry level with plenty of features in the preferred 5 speed manual of $20,500. Our 04 was $17,170 brand new and is still going strong with 140k. Great vehicles.
Cross overs are a mixed bag all these look good its what best suits you
CX-5 is the best looking small SUV to date =)
I think I am going to schedule a test drive for the CX-5 VERY soon!
+Jake Cake This is now the base engine. The 2.5 184 HP, the interiors have been upgraded the info center is now larger, an suspension has been tweaked and so has the AWd system.

1. Forester
2. Escape
3. CX5
4. Rav4
5. CRV
Compare these and you'll find something you like for a CUV.
loves the mazda and subaru looks!
Have you guys gotten your hands on the 2014 model?
The Grand Vitara is not new...or even that small...or do you know something we don't ;-)
I think I bough a house in Prague from this guy back in the 90s?!?!!?
should see what jeremy clarckson does with the CX5 on topgear. he drags a camper thru the woods and muck with it. was prety able there
Maybe, but Honda doesn't invite us to new car launches.
GREAT REVIEW! Any chance you could do a AWD Charger v8 review?
So, Roman and Nathan, if you had to choose between a Mazda CX-5 and a Subaru Forester, which would you pick and why?
I'm in the same spot and I'm between 2013 Toyota RAV4 LE or Mazda CX-5 Touring. I would love to know Roman and Nathan's thoughts.
best part about this review... that guys black black sabbath tee
Love the Mazda CX-5 looks.
I love your rewiews, you make such a great team. Roman, you have Romanian origins?
So - between the Crosstrek and the CX-5, which do you prefer?
I own a Subaru Legacy GT Limited and I love it. If i got an SUV, it would def be a Forester.
what about snow? how does it do in snow?
Love these guys, specially the nice tall one
The CRV's rear seats do still recline via the lever near the top of the seat.
That Godzilla shirt is a nice touch.
It would be great if you guys could go to Yellowstone or Grand Tetons for some shoots!
Is that left hand canyon?
Could u please do an off road review of the Mazda CX-7
i like Tiguan !!
What is the name of the song at 13:00? Great job, continue on!!
come to the states try driven the Escalade

haha
posted speeds? it handles terribly on the highway and who doesnt pass you?
on the highway...also very choppy ride, just did a 3,000 mile Canadian Rockies Trip and not a nice ride...Gutless too...
lol when Nathan circled around in the CX-5
I will just wait for HD quality and then leave a comment.
I agree. Audio needs work too... I can hear the wind over the voices..
What about the nissan rouge?
STICK WITH FORD AND MAZDA!!!!!
IT WAS MY MISTAKE TO CHOOSE SOMETHING ELSE AND I REGRET IT EVERYDAY!!! TRUST ME FORD OR MAZDA! THEY ARE THE BEST!
I wear headphones to listen to my computer and at 13:15, I thought my cat kept meowing.

Turboed cars arent slower based on elevation. Thats the benefit to having one living high in the mountains
Wait a minute. Did you guys just say of the CR-V:
"It's like a taller civic."
"Which means!! We get to go off-road."
What....
Doesn't anyone know the name of the song from 12:47 to 13:10 we are 2 to want to know, anyone??
I am a gear head and I think the nissan murano would totally beat all of them you should check it out
get a wind sock for the microphones. PLEASE!

You should take a look at some subaru suv/crossovers. They have great awd systems and are very reliable.
Something that costs less than $5000 and is reliable.
Missed the RVR.
Why haven't you guys reviewed any new Audi models?
Why isn't mitsubishi ASX placed in? Is it a bad car?
Why wasn't the cherokee in this comparo?
tiredrummertube this video was made in 2012.
No RAV4????

We get the diesel Kuga/Escape in the UK
45mpg, why they never released it in the US is strange
If you do side-by-side comparisons, you will find that pretty much all of your cars get better fuel economy.
I'm sure its an accident.
Honda CR-V is still the number one selling in it segment for the past 6 years! Enough said!
+HW2800 Just because its the #1 selling does not necessarily mean its the best.

What happened to the old days when the imprezas were fast. Even though the new sti is fast, regular imprezas were fast though in like 90s to like 08
Great, more clip shows

Amazing. SUV not built for off-road..LOL. So why buy one????? Get sedan or van if you need transportation to the Mall.
