Not necessarily, but they should have shown what was happening at the rear. If the front was spinning and the rear wasn't moving then there is a classic example of a AWD system that just doesn't cut it off road. Sure you can put better tires on it and it makes it out of situations like that but the same extreme tires on any FWD vehicle will produce the same result.
yeah im calling bull ive seen other videos and seen the explorer go through harder obstacles like nothing and shows the 4wd in motion this guy probably put it back on two wheel drive street mode
SRT8 is the stupidest concept around. It's a large box with a lot of weight near the top of the car, huge power just to push ton's of car around. Why would anyone with that sort of money waste it on a vehicle like that? Take 20k get a truck for carrying stuff, and 35k for a STI to completely annihilate a Jeep.
Nippledozer The STi seats five... Crossover SUVs don't make any sense as family vehicles. Minivans and wagons were designed for families. Pretty sure you don't need to sit 10 feet up with a 10 foot ground clearance and 8 mpg to carry around a family of five.
gotsn0w "seats five" is not the same thing as "seats five comfortably". Small SUVs have some level of practicality, as they have larger, more accessible doors and trunks, and also a taller ridehight, which is better for visibility and entry/exit. Also, SUVs have larger cargo areas, meaning they are capable of carrying large pieces of furniture and such, as well as more space on the roof. If you have ever tried to install a childs car-seat in a short car, youd know its a nightmare. Way more easy in an suv. Also, people buy them for the sake of preference. I mean, if practicality was THE ONLY DECIDING FACTOR when buying a car, wouldnt we all drive POS commuter cars?
"Sake of preference" is the only reason they exist. There aren't really any good reasons to get one. Minivans can seat 7-8 comfortably, and have much more easily accessible sliding doors that have a clear advantage when it comes to seating people in tight parking lots, installing child seats, etc... If most minivans are too large, there is a rather small and good looking minivan in existence called the Mazda5. To carry large furniture, usually seats must be removed; minivans have removable second and third rows, whereas small SUVs do not. Minivans do not have the hatchback shape, which means a flatter and longer roof for carrying things on top. Minivans have the high seating position for better visibility, without the obnoxious and dangerous ride height of small SUVs. Also with a taller ride height in any vehicle, you compromise rear visibility without a rear camera. Small SUVs are merely jacked-up hatchbacks with slightly more headroom. They serve no useful purpose that minivans do not already fulfill. They look like poser off-road vehicles with their hilarious ride heights, not to mention the resulting center-of-gravity is unsafe. They're boring to drive. And I think they're ugly. So ugly. Minivans don't look particularly cool either, but they don't look like amphibious vehicles, and at least I can't see the ugly mufflers and control arms hanging out while standing behind one at a light. GM SUVs come to mind... xD But of course, this is the USA. People have the right to choose what they want to drive, no matter how ugly, impractical, unsafe, inefficient, or poorly designed XD
gotsn0w lol, I definately agree about them being ugly!! haha, I thought you were just saying something to the extent of "why does anoyone drive anything other than an STI" but yeah i totally get what youre saying now. the SRT8 is just... opulence. You know, the GLA45 AMG, despite it being a small suv, is still rather interesting..
I think Subaru and the Nissan Xterra are best. I would include Land Rover but there's no point being off road if you can't stay on road in terms of reliability.
2:07 - 'I'm officially stuck' - then at 2:33 you effortlessly drive away? Your issues is with what you said, you were in mud mode. You needed it in sand mode for fine dried up dirt or sand.
Please start ASAP and send us a link to your first review. This is TH-cam after all and nothing is stopping you from reviewing cars. We'll be happy to watch your reviews with the same critical eye you have used for our old reviews.
The part from 3:30-7:35 was a big advertisement for SRT (I think they sponsored this vid), its like an adult advertisement in the middle of a cartoon movie, or, showing a polar bear to the teddy-bears when they're asking for what they shouldn't be.
If you don't need to go off-road, buy a Sedan or Coupe. They'll be more fun on road because of Lower Weight and Lower ground clearance. Also, they can give more performance...
I have this countryman, and the ALL4 system has saved my from an accident at 75 mph. We were driving in the rain on the way home from a family trip. 2 other passengers and I were in the car, with all of our bags in the trunk. As we turned around a slight corner (we were in the fast lane) we lost traction. The car almost hit the center wall when the ALL4 system acted (within .5 of a second) and pulled us back into our path of travel. Though we would have survived the crash, we would probably would have sustained many injuries. And car crashing at almost 80 mph in the rain would have it's passengers sustain injuries. The Mini Countryman is safe too though, so we could have been alright I suppose- luckily we didn't need to test the safety.
I've done it with a 25 year old peugeot 205 with 10 year old used up tires on the front. It's got some impressive ground clearance for a small car and it weighs only half to a third of what an average fat-ass SUV weighs. Now I have a justy, still weighs less than a ton, has 4wd and is just like "lol you call that an ice-road hill?".
Infinitrium What's your definition of stuck? He just backed reversed and easily got out of it. Plus he was in rock and mud mode even though the ground was much more sand like. Also, some off-road tires would have probably helped.
I like the crossovers for what they are and my wife has one for commuting and family use. I have a hunting camp and for me it's the need to not only get me and my family to the camper, but all the gear, ATV's, food, fuel, generator, etc. so I have a GMC2500 4x4 that can do the heavy lifting with ease.
I have the Ford Explorer 2013 and is fast but not off road fun and not enough ground clearance even though I got aftermarket tires much bigger but still low ground clearance like 7.9 before and now 8.1 of ground clearance, I’m switching to a 2019 Toyota RAV4 adventure for camping and off road adventures
I am a big fan of ford and I love the ford explorer and I agree with you that it's not really your everyday off road vehicle but its still capable. Was the ford explorer that you tested all wheel drive? To shouldn't get stuck.
The reality all of these are built knowing the most they will encounter is wet grass at the kids soccer game and "off road" is driving to Starbucks in the Snow when mom runs out of patience in suburbia. .
Can you guys make videos of crossovers that test their AWD systems such as mud, ice, gravel, etc. I have a Jeep YJ for off-roading, I need a vehicle that can handle my drive to work and a snow storm along the way
I have owned a Jeep Wrangler and now have a Subaru Forester of the 2 vehicles I have found the Subaru to be better at going down country roads in Okla, dirt and mud with lots of rocks up to 5 inches. In one area the bridge has been out for the last 4 years and some people will still drive the road and go through small creek bed and up the other side. It is do that or go 15 miles out of the way to get to town. I have found that getting up the driveway at a friends house the driveway is 1/2 mile long and mostly mud and rock as a small stream runs beside the track is no issue with the Forester or in the Wrangler. The track they went up in Colo looked like Roy's driveway.
Actually, Jeep started using the old Mercedes ML platform to build their Grand Cherokees in 1999. There was a lot of parts sharing that happened when Chrysler was Daimler-Benz without a lot of press coverage. Mercedes was worried it would "dilute their brand value" if people knew Chrysler products were using Mercedes parts.
There are A LOT of different trims that come with different size wheels and tires available. Their tests are VERY arbitrary. That said, they're basically right. These cars are for snow and utility, not climbing mountains.
OK im a chevy fan but my parents own a ford explorer(2012) and its pretty good.We went hunting with it and there was 2ft of snow and icy hills that we had to clime. Not once did we get stuck.
Hi guys, Its sometimes hard to visualise the steepness and grade of the hill. nascar now uses a gyrocam or something to show the elevation. Is it possible for you guys to get one , may make it more fun to watch..
I don't understand why people even buy these things. Hardly anymore capability than an AWD sedan. Worse mileage. Can't tow much. Ride and handle worse than a minivan with less interior room. I'll stick with my 98 Tahoe with a solid rear axle, two speed transfer case, and pick up truck frame. I don't care if the rest of the world has gone to crossovers.
I drive a Volvo XC70, some people consider it a crossover, some call it a wagon. Either way, it is actually a pretty impressive vehicle. I have 8.2" of ground clearance and it is very capable on moderate trails (I have all terrain tires, big difference). I get 25 city and 29 hwy (on average, I've done 32.6mpg highway). It rides really nice, you feel the little cracks in the road but large suspension travel is very smooth, and it can tow 4,000 pounds. I would like to get a truck one day, I just never had a need for it.
Remember people when off roading you must always drive over the rocks you can't, never ever pick lines that your vehicle can drive (note heavy sarcasm)
let us Chrysler ignore our bad reputation and unreliable cars and look at the beautiful style change we have done to the back of this grand Cherokee ooh pretty right that's what were all about here at Chrysler style! You done need reliability as long as you look good ;P T,T - fuck Chrysler! they ruined jeep! cj-7's are the real jeeps!
So true. I had a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and something was ALWAYS wrong with it. Radiator (x3), back tail light (x2), power windows, power door locks, brake pads / rotors (x2) had to be replaced in 2 years. I traded it in for 2013 Infiniti FX37 and I can't believe I paid almost the same price for them. No problems so far and the performance? Let's just say Jeep is like a horseless carriage in comparison.
Hehe.. I took my 3 cylinder, 1.0L Suzuki Alto in light off-road conditions.. and it did it.. it made it through.. but it was a perilous drive at best :) hehe.. I'm sure most cars can handle a little bit of rough and tumble.. it comes down to how far you're willing to risk the car getting stuck or damaged :)
my buddy has a 2015 ford explorer and i have a 2015 subaru forester. his has that bulllshit winter mode or whatever and we wanted to test which is better, forester or explorer. So we went to my drive way which is a bout a 45 degree angle and it had about 3 inches of new snow that was untouched. we drove up half way, came to a complete stop and then would try to get to the top of the drive way. Subaru had a little slip at first, figured itself out and caught and went up no problems. The explorer just spun basically, went up a little then would spin and get stuck. no more than 5 feet. Then i really tested the forester and decided to start at the bottom of the hill, dead stop, and just punch the accelerator. it still figured itself out fairly quickly and had no troubles.
Don't discount the old WRX's as well. I have a 2004 WRX Wagon, it's been unstoppable in all conditions and absolutely reliable. Still on original clutch with 203k miles. Put some winter tires on there for snow and it's amazing, although even when I had bald stock tires it was still great in snow. I've also taken it offroad, for example cutting down christmas trees on some forest service roads in the cascades, it actually performed better than our friends new outback. They had to stop and we kept going.
I like how you guys are doing review , don't pay attention on these looser hater that don't even have car telling you how to do stuff. Keep doing what you are ! From Canada , Quebec city, sorry for the bad english :) I speak french !
The main problem with those explorers is the approach angle I have a neighbor who scrapes the road when they pull out of their driveway which I think is ridiculous for an SUV. Sure it's a steep driveway but it's still crazy
Gotta admit, I was hoping you were going to take the SRT8 off road lol. Not sure you would have made it that far cause of like 4-5 inches of clearance. I'm so glad you pointed out that most of those shouldn't go off road, however Top Gear UK might disagree with the touareg. Not heavy off roading but likely more then any of the others.
I'm not, but if I were looking for something in this segment of the market I think my first stop would be the Ford kuga/Escape AWD. it looks and drives great (UK Model), and here at least does not have the fashion accessory feel of the Mini and the Nissan.
I have a SATURN VUE with the HONDA MOTOR AND TRANS. I cant take it off road but for the snow and the beach its been great. BUT with a All wheel drive you cant put brand new tires on the front if the rear tires aren't almost new. It has 255 hp with my cold air intake . Its not a tough SUV but its been a good one. 85,000 and runs like new.
I'm pretty certain any these crossovers couldn't even come close to the offroading I do. Not only ground clearance, but the independent suspension just doesn't articulate.
A trail can be considered a road since it is designed for transportation needs a guidance from one point to another. Where you make your on trail or road is off road.
I have taken my 2003 stock Wrangler up that trail many times. For a dedicated off roader it is pretty easy, but taking CRV's, Escapes and RAV4's up that is pretty loony. Sure it's not a hardcore Moab trail, but a great beginner trail or a trail to take stock off roaders and test non off road CUVs. Seems some people here need to keep pumping the size of their trouser snake by how awesome they are off roading.
I think the whole situation gets a little skewed as well because like you said, off-roading is about going through even when you get stuck, but they can't really do that for their videos because they don't own the cars they test, and I think they would rather not risk damaging any of the cars they test.
#1 look at tires #2 many newer are fwd only awd is what you need along with good gripping tires my chevy equinox is awd with good Firestone tires I do fine off road no issues obviously your not gunna go through 3 ft of mud or rock climb with these but they're plenty off road worthy
crossovers are just regular 4 cylinder cars that look like SUVs, excluding subaru foresters ofcourse. with that said, the 1 crossover i would get is the Mazda CX-5. that car is just sexy.
It would be so nice if these guys would put proper tires on these things so we could actually get some real info. Stock tires are usually made for the kind of people who drive it around town
"I don't understand, I got it in Rock and Mud Mode" is like a photographer saying "I don't understand, I have the camera set to good picture mode"

how anyone can think a mini cooper is for off roading is beyond me... ...
There are minis doing rally/Dakar
There are a few enthusiasts that give them a lift and they are awesome off road. Stock not so much
A stock countryman is for paved roads and snowy conditions it would never go off road like that

I guess it's pretty randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
13:31 Random gunshot and no one bats an eye. 'Murica
I heard that too. Lol! Its not uncommon to hear shots out in the forests there. Free land. I wish Texas still had some.. :(
More for the off road access though.
I went off-roading in Arizona one time, and gunshots are regular background noise in some places. People just love to target shoot out there, it's fun stuff :)
I wish texas schools had more gunshots too :(
Sojerothetenkin101 Not common everywhere, but the best and safest place for DIY target shooting is out in the countryside. Usually you find a hill to be the backdrop so the bullets bury themselves in dirt. And the sound carries quite far.
This was filmed in fall so it probably people hunting since it would be hunting season.

Frank Burns true I agree
I can't believe they put the SRT8 Grand Cherokee on there. Oh, it's not supposed to go offroad? Well, no sh*t.
Right... sorta like taking a Lambo out and being surprised it can't go offroad.
but they ARE SUVs, and SUVs are supposed to go offroad no matter who made them, I mean it's literally in its name, Sport Utility Vehicle
@@0323J Yeah but they took the sportiest trim of the dodge... of course its not supposed to go offroad its a SRT-8. Not intended to offroad as much.

They're tested with factory equipped tires.

yeah... testing off road capability with street tyres, really?!
Ain't nobody got time to change tyres. If anything they represent real life situations by NOT changing the tyres
+acuras4ever Yeah, like when you are driving through the streets, and all the sudden, there is a mountain in the way!
+Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this... Isn't it kind of anfair to "bottlenecking" the cars with the wrong type of tyres?
yea, isn't silly ? :D no threads, and he did not even air down the tires, with the proper tires, technique a one wheel drive can do it :D

My question, the Mini - with three people - starting to get crowded. How did they all three find hte comfort squeezing in there?
AS long as your not 6'4 and 300+ pounds, there is plenty of room.
I am driving a Fiat 500C in Germany right now. I guess three can sit in it.... but that one in the back is going to be squeezed.
You are correct, I said that in my comment. But what they are on is pretty much a gravel or rock road meant for the travel of certain cars
Making way for the die hard Yota in its natural habitat, lol.

VW is the best off road SUV? What are they smoking?
+Ray_Biker Touareg!!!!!!!!!!
I love yore videos keep it going👍🏻
let us Chrysler ignore our bad reputation and unreliable cars and look at the beautiful style change we have done to the back of this grand Cherokee ooh pretty right that's what were all about here at Chrysler style! You done need reliability as long as you look good ;P
T,T - fuck Chrysler! they ruined jeep! cj-7's are the real jeeps!
Let's just say Jeep is like a horseless carriage in comparison.
gayrad47 it was good before fiat bought it... Ugh.
PumaBitez yep fiat sucks
Bullshit. Chrysler has been flopping since the 90s.
gayrad47 its nothing wrong with making fast eastate cars
Then i really tested the forester and decided to start at the bottom of the hill, dead stop, and just punch the accelerator. it still figured itself out fairly quickly and had no troubles.
subaru legacy or outback, cheaper, faster, better off the road and symetrical AWD...
+Filip Kawka unfortunately CVT transmission.
+sherlock tango Best CVT on the market, not too big of a deal.
Yeah, that 3" ground clearance wouldn't even look at the road in the video.
@@FCFordLord not the best, but onr of the better ones.
I like that Sarah has comedic timing you can't fake.
I like how you guys are doing review , don't pay attention on these looser hater that don't even have car telling you how to do stuff. Keep doing what you are !
From Canada , Quebec city, sorry for the bad english :) I speak french !
Hi roman and nathan, could you do an off road review on the 2013 Honda Pilot? Thanks!!
Please bring up a review of the 2012 Mitsubishi Pajero
Having the proper tires makes a lot of difference..................
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍👍
The main problem with those explorers is the approach angle I have a neighbor who scrapes the road when they pull out of their driveway which I think is ridiculous for an SUV.
Sure it's a steep driveway but it's still crazy
the explorer got stuck but the model you tested is just fwd
For the explorer he put it in the wrong mode, he should have put it in Gravel and Rocks mode rather than mud and ruts
Looks like a road to me...
🤣
13:30 was that a gunshot?
I drove this one yesterday. Great comfy highway vehicle. But not sporty.
Try the Kona with 1.6L turbo and AWD.
I'm a bit curious, couldn't you mod the suspension on the 2011-present Explorer?
Yeah but why would you? Idk who buys an explorer with expectations to go rock crawling in it.
any car with LSD/axle lock feature can be gr8 SUV. just leave terrain response and other fancy looking features
Wow a very unbiased track run from the jeep development guy...smh
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍
Gotta admit, I was hoping you were going to take the SRT8 off road lol. Not sure you would have made it that far cause of like 4-5 inches of clearance. I'm so glad you pointed out that most of those shouldn't go off road, however Top Gear UK might disagree with the touareg. Not heavy off roading but likely more then any of the others.
I'm surprised that is called "off-road" - it looked like an easy dirt track that leads to the farmers gate to me.
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍👍👍
I'm not, but if I were looking for something in this segment of the market I think my first stop would be the Ford kuga/Escape AWD. it looks and drives great (UK Model), and here at least does not have the fashion accessory feel of the Mini and the Nissan.
The Explorer doesn't surprise me. And don't forget to mention the Cherokee's catching fire.
The juke is more like a joke
what part of CO is this near?
Seriously, @2:21 you made that up...right?
Do a 2017 version please
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍👍
It's one of the funnest cars you can drive. It goes like hell.
Im going for the Juke, sporty, more than capable and just plain hotter than the other crossovers tested in this video.
the regular jeep grand cherokee will go offroad no problem
You got street tires off road on the explorer and your surprised you got stuck ?
So am I! If you want to go offroad, dont look past any Toyota 4x4!
Take a Rav4 there mate. I’m sure it does it easily.
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍👍
I'm pretty certain any these crossovers couldn't even come close to the offroading I do. Not only ground clearance, but the independent suspension just doesn't articulate.
A trail can be considered a road since it is designed for transportation needs a guidance from one point to another. Where you make your on trail or road is off road.
What track is that?
I have taken my 2003 stock Wrangler up that trail many times. For a dedicated off roader it is pretty easy, but taking CRV's, Escapes and RAV4's up that is pretty loony. Sure it's not a hardcore Moab trail, but a great beginner trail or a trail to take stock off roaders and test non off road CUVs. Seems some people here need to keep pumping the size of their trouser snake by how awesome they are off roading.
Is this Ray Romano?
I think the whole situation gets a little skewed as well because like you said, off-roading is about going through even when you get stuck, but they can't really do that for their videos because they don't own the cars they test, and I think they would rather not risk damaging any of the cars they test.
Guys, you haven't seen the Santa fe 2013 ..... it's AWESOME.
I know you won't believe this but my 2003 dodge caravan short base was a good off road vehicle .
all depends on your definition of "good Off road vehicle"
I have one same year it's pulled through snow mud and bumpy dirt trails but an accident has since limited it's reliability.
you should look up the Juke-R
You guys should take a new Murano down that trail...
Where are those trails to test my outback?????
was the ford AWD
#1 look at tires #2 many newer are fwd only awd is what you need along with good gripping tires my chevy equinox is awd with good Firestone tires I do fine off road no issues obviously your not gunna go through 3 ft of mud or rock climb with these but they're plenty off road worthy
Both here. Juke&Jeep.
What an difficult choice every morning
crossovers are just regular 4 cylinder cars that look like SUVs, excluding subaru foresters ofcourse. with that said, the 1 crossover i would get is the Mazda CX-5. that car is just sexy.
th-cam.com/video/G054btjDMBw/w-d-xo.html 👍👍👍
It would be so nice if these guys would put proper tires on these things so we could actually get some real info. Stock tires are usually made for the kind of people who drive it around town
Who is this girl? The 3 of you should do this more often. Makes the show more enjoyable
Next time try a Subaru Forester or a Suzuki Jimny.
US doesn't have jimnys
I could never define the difference between a true SUV and a crossover...
$45,000 for any thing that isn't Full sized is outrageous.
Tires?
Most suvs today aren’t made for offroading which is sad but there is off roaring kits and wheels for them still
Roading
