Hey Doug, I'm not a follower and stumble across your videos from time to time when I want to check out an old iconic car, but I just wanted you to know that as a viewer from Europe I really value your time and effort into adding kilometers whenever you mention miles. Thank you for caring
Doug has 0 fears. “You can’t cancel me” he says, “someone on cars and bids will lend me one of your cars regardless of what you say” he quips. Doug is both the hero we want and the hero we deserve!
@@theemeralddj1 I agree, and disagree. In 2017 they where on sale marked down to about $10,000. But the general public wanted large SUV's, speedy, very safe, and don't care about fuel. And the people who want a A, to B car don't see much about Mitsubishi, so they get a Corolla instead. But in 2024, the price is $18,000. A lot more, but the price of all cars has gone way up, and with the gas prices how they are, they are selling quite a bit more Mirages.
@@extralock1045 that's true, I just came up with that $6,499 number cause for how the new Mirages are, especially the base base models (and thinking back to Doug's old Mirage review), it seems reasonable to me at least at that theoretical price
The Mirage makes sense in its target countries. In South East Asia it competes with many cars that are very simple such as the Toyota Wigo / Daihatsu Ayla or the Suzuki Celerio or the Kia Picanto. In many developing countries used cars simply don't depreciate at anywhere near what we see in North America or even Europe and in these markets a new Mirage is closer in price to a 6 year old Corolla that may or may not have been through multiple flood and natural disasters. I have a feeling that Nissan / Renault are producing as many Mirages as the Mitsubishi plant that produces them can produce and what ends up in the USA is simply their to keep models in the showrooms until they can figure out what to do with the brand and its dealerships.
6:08 I had an Audi e-tron SUV (now called the Q8 e-trim). Still have an Audi e-tron GT and a Tesla Model Y. While I haven’t tried the Q4 personally I can honestly say there’s many reasons to have it over a Model Y. The build quality on the Audi is much better than Tesla and that’s got to count for something price wise. And Tesla’s range is an absolute BS metric while every Audi EV I’ve had gets pretty much spot on the range it quotes, my 2022 Model Y long range which allegedly has north of 300 miles of range gets 250 miles on a good day, in SoCal.
Love Doug but one thing I don't understand about car reviewers nowadays is how they take the stated EV mile numbers as the absolute truth, while there are so many videos showing otherwise (2020 Taycan comes to mind for example, its real-world range was MUCH more competitive than it seemed).
@@iqless7313 but it's the same for any measurable metric, whether range, fuel consumption or 1/4 mile times. There are always variances based on testing conditions and tester (not to mention production variances). But like fuel consumption, at least the published ranges are based on standardized testing, so at least it's a level playing field with all tested cars.
He’s right though. The Mirage makes sense in a market like, say, India. New cars are unobtainably expensive, and the government forces older models to be scrapped often. In the US market, every time I see a Mirage, I immediately think of 20 used cars for the same price that are better equipped and more reliable. It’s buying new just for the sake of having new un-farted-in seats lol.
@@80PercentAshamedOfU Buying used is risky since there's no warranty. You may need to fork out an extra 5k for a new engine or transmission. Also the Mirage isn't sold in India since Indian carmakers make much better alternatives like the Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, Mahindra Scorpio etc.
I'm worried that he's ignoring maintenance and repair. Anyone buying a versa thinking they'll spend more over a 15 year ownership period over a mirage is in for a rude surprise.
I love the fact that Doug has enough cred and critical mass now that he can just be super blunt and honest 😂 but I also love how upset he genuinely seems when referring to these cars
Big thanks to him and all the youtubers hating the Subaru Solterra. Thanks to them, I got a $329 lease with $329 down on this commuter car that I charge at home and could care less about the relatively slow DC fast charging.
@@ytubela ya man, that car didn't fit on the list to me. Maybe some people just want a Japanese car feel in electric form. Toyota dealer experience, dash, Interior etc. Not everyone cares about HP and range, because most people use 120hp and 100mi range.
True story. Wife and I test drove the new Audi Q4 Etron middle of last summer during a standard 110 degree day here in Phoenix. That car had the absolute worst air conditioning of any car we have ever driven in our lives! Took about a 10 mile trip with sales guy with some freeway and when we got back to the dealership we were all sweating and dying to get out. We told the sales person at Audi that the a/c on full blast trickled out like cool breath at best and his exact words were. “Yeah we get that a lot”. We immediately drove back to Volvo and purchased the C40 recharge twin we had test drove earlier in the day. The Volvo was same price, WAY faster and had a/c that would blow your hair back. Wife LOVES driving her Volvo!
Toyota salesman here from Wyoming. Can confirm that the bZ4X is certainly the worst car I’ve ever come across. We have only had 1 come through our dealership that sat for over 200 days. It was dead every single day. We never sold it and eventually sent it to a different Toyota dealer down south who had 11 of these things at the time.
@@hotshtsr20yes it would literally kill itself each day. We key up in the mornings (leave all keys in lot vehicles) and they ley left in the car would cause it to die even if it was fully charged.
Meanwhile, the new Prius Prime is in high demand, so clearly Toyota knows how to make a quality, stylish electrified car. They just choose not to build a quality pure bev, possibly because leadership is stubbornly against them.
Slightly unfair. At least it's pretty reliable. For $8 to 9k a used 30k mileage Mirage will get people to work on time for a decade. An $8k Corolla or Civic is often beat to s#it.
Sad 😢 They used to have pretty cool cars. Lancer evo, Galant, Sigma, Saporro, Starion, Eclipse, 3000gt...Even some of the older mirages were ok. A bit like a civic in the late 90's
The Jeep Grand Wagoneers are self-immolating. New Jeeps across the board are having electrical issues. And Dodge has delayed the car nobody wants -- the Charger EV -- because of battery issues. Stellantis is circling the drain.
@@lukemcdoThey sell plenty of vehicles with alot of new ones releasing over the next few years,..don't count out Mopar or the other great American brands
Doug is absolutely right about the Mirage. For about $17,000-$19,000 at current market rates, basically the same price as a Mirage, you can get a dealership-maintained 2020 Honda Fit LX with under 20,000 miles, and it will ride considerably better, be far more refined, will still get great fuel economy, have better handling with accurate steering, feature a more versatile and larger interior with the magic seats and will do 0-60 in sport mode in a bit over 8 seconds. Basically enough to quickly get up to freeway speeds, which is what you want in a commuter car. I unfortuantely had to rent a Mirage last year when I was overseas, as it was the only vehicle left on the lot, and it felt quite sketchy and borderline unacceptable with its acceleration. Especially going up hills, it struggled. I couldn't imagine trying to merge onto a freeway with short entrance ramps, like I-10 through the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. A 1990 Honda Accord or mid-90's Toyota Camry offers you a far more compliant suspension and ride comfort over this piece of junk.
I actually live in the Los Angeles area, and also travel up to places like Big Bear often. I drive about 77 miles a day, mostly freeway. I've never had an issue with merging, always gets me up to 50-55 at the end of the onramp. I use about 40% throttle, or about 2,500 RPM. Just got back from a 259 mile drive, feel good. Went up to Big Bear on the CA-38, elevation 8,500 feet. I had max capacity in the car nearly, about 750 pounds. It was slow at the top, still made it good. Slow and steady. It can keep up with traffic if you dig into the throttle, but I try to save gas, and keep it about 1,800 to 2,200 RPM. So went about 30 MPH up the hill. But you can go 50-55 if you want. Also the Mirage steering is very accurate, at least mine is. Maybe your rental had bad experiences in the past? Not sure. And the rear seats also fold down, 60/40 split.
@@johnkonde1975my local Mitsubishi dealer gave up on trying to run their own service department. They outsourced their warranty work to a handful of independent shops (I don’t think they were offering anything other than warranty work). One of those shops was having a hard time getting $$ for their work. It may not be a bad thing overall (assuming they pay), but I’d never heard of such a scenario. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the warranty……
This is the best version of Doug we have ever seen. Absolutely perfect. Loving the new material - and most of all thanks for sharing more of your personality and humor with us. The comment about Mitsubishi making fun of the poor had me rolling 😂

I worked at a Mitsubishi, and I was baffled by how many people buy that Mirage. The Mitsubishi training also said one of The many reasons they stopped the Evolution was because the Mirage outsold the Evolution.
It is so unbelievable that the Mirage G4 always manages to be on the top best selling vehicles in my country. I think people don't realize how horribly outdated it feels, looks, drives, and the price increase every year or two just doesn't help. They just see this Mirage G4 with a decent space for a Southeast Asian person and a tiny 3-cylinder that sips gas and boom, it sells.
I’m a Japanese and when I saw this car came out brand new over 10 years ago, I was like “what are they thinking of?” I know it’s mainly for SE Asian market but still sell it for US or Europe which I hardly understand why. It has stupid price, terrible to look at, terrible to drive and has developed with absolutely outdated technologies. It’s the same story for Nissan Micra and these only make sense to put on sale today if they are half the price of their equivalent competitors, which they are not.
Uh do you actually work at mitsubishi? Because we all know the Mirage sold like hot cakes because the car is super cheap, and these days people only need that type of car
I own a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage GT. I purchased the vehicle new from my local dealer. Six months after I purchased it I gave it to my oldest son who drove it throughout college averaging 70 miles round-trip daily. Then went to my youngest son, who drove it through college living in Northern North Dakota. I now have the car back with over 100,000 miles. In all this time the car has never left any of us stranded. The car has been consistently reliable and given us outstanding service while maintaining great gas mileage. Is it sexy? No. Is it fast? No. Is it the best car out there? No but for what you pay and the warranty that you get, we are extremely satisfied with the service this little car has given us and will continue to give us in the future. It survived years of abuse from college students so that’s pretty darn good in my book.
I got a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage too! Its my very own car I got it last November and not once has it had any sort of issue whatsoever, it's over 100k miles, and I bought it for 7.7k and I use it for Food delivery. I've owned a Fiat and a pair of Chevy cars and it's been so much better than both of them.
7:40 "Have you ever walked into a dealership and said 'I know I can get the new model cheaper, but I would like to pay more for the old model'?" True story.
There is no way someone payed more for a 3rd gen Tacoma. The new one has like 10k market adjustment at least. I guarantee that person got sticker price for the 3rd gen which is not bad.
The things that make a car "bad" these days are a LOT different than what made them bad in the Pinto days. That's partly why people say there are no more bad cars. In terms of bad cars, these days, bad cars are FAR better than what they were.
@robertulrich3964 I mean, most of these 'bad' components still last about as long as most cars from the Pinto era, and are far from being a universal failure.
Work at a Buick dealer (not a salesman, just a job) I disagree with the opinion on the Encore GX mostly due to the fact that the GX has the option of AWD, taller trunk for cargo room, and as a taller person (6'3") I find it more comfortable to sit in. Not to mention for a lot of older people (lets be honest, they are a lot of the customer base who likes Buick) they find it very easy to get into. The Envista is designed to be a sportier/nicer looking base model, while the Encore GX is meant to be a bit roomier and more capable, with the addition of more options for things like sound system, AWD, packages, etc.
The Encore may be boring and dated, but it doesn’t seem as bad as the others on this list. It isn’t unreliable. It doesn’t make one want to gouge his eyes out the way a Juke or that BMW does. It doesn’t seem to be horrendously overpriced, either. What I don’t fully understand, and this isn’t just about Buick, is that seemingly every manufacturer is slicing the SUV market into ever smaller and overlapping niches… heck even Mazda has the CX-50 and CX-5 out at the same time. Yet, nobody can figure out how to make a profit selling a sedan or wagon? How about going after a market that doesn’t have a ton of competition?
@@stevelovescars I don't even think it's even dated. I think they modernized it quite nicely, but the entirety of the car segment it resides in is indeed very stale

This is totally inaccurate. The Encore GX is the twin to the Chevy trailblazer and the Envista is like a Chevy Trax. This is a naming problem that confuses people. The Envista replaced the Encore which was a different vehicle than the Encore GX. Buick made the mistake of naming 2 different cars Encore.
The bZ4X is Akio Toyoda's answer to every board member who kept pressing that they must get a slice of the EV market. It's intentionally bad just to be the "I told you so" car to prove Toyota's bet on hybrids is better than full electrification.
@@antiLGTBQ Toyota is against EV's for one reason. They're aware it will effect their bottom line and profits. @@TheMsdos25 Fun fact about the MX-30 range-extender - if you start with a full battery and full fuel tank, and drive until both are depleted, you get a worse MPG figure than you would in the Mazda CX-30, a pure non-hybrid petrol car. Thank you for calling out the XM. I have been livid about it ever since it got unveiled. HOW do you make a "dedicated" M vehicle slower than the much cheaper X5M?
I think the point of it was to add a vehicle that is hybridized/ electric in order to follow the emissions regulations. Otherwise I see no point of it.
*How do you make one version of the XM slower than the X5M, is what you and what seems like a lot of others are confused about. There’s a performance version of the XM called the Label. Meh. They seem to still be selling quite well, although people claim they aren’t. After doing some research, I’m sure BMW is pretty happy with the outcome.
Mitsubishi Mirage: I recently added a fourth one to my driving school fleet. The main reasons I like it is because 1) it is STILL a simple car; 2) it is easy to repair; 3) it has a $100K powertrain warranty; 4) 43 MPG city/hwy mixed has been my experience; 5 they have been remarkably reliable for us! Yeah, they're lousy if you have to take a long trip because they're a bit noisy and they are not the most comfortable, but they are great commuters and grocery getters!
Maybe in isolation those things are true, but compared to a used Corolla or something for the same money as a new Mirage? That seems like a better car in every way
Yeah, the Encore and Envista are re-badged Chevy Trailblazer and Trax, respectively (AWD vs FWD). Still not defending them, I think all 4 vehicles are downgrades from their competitors
This whole episode was hilarious start to finish! Savage Doug is pretty refreshing.. until he got around to Buick. Had a brand new '21 GX Preferred after trading in a base RAV4. Loved it over the RAV4! Well.. until it got totaled on Christmas. Found an '18 Encore. Love it way more. Wouldn't touch an Envista, would rather step up to a new GX Avenir down the road and keep the old Encore Essence. Proven updated styling, solidly built. Well-appointed for what it is. Needless to say, my heart hurt a little - all good.
Yeah man and the interiors are actually exactly the same 😂 not sure what he was on with that one but seems like he shortened the research on that segment. Love the dude but not a good look.
Not only was this highly intelligible, entertaining, it was also the most truthful car review video I've seen in a long long time. Toyota doesn't want to be in EV's, that's why they spent minimal money to rebrand a Subaru.
@@battlefield3112011 Very typical of an EV attempt from a Japanese marque. No real commitment or desire to sell them. Still, bet Toyota are glad they poured billions into their hydrogen project. Sold 3,700 Mirais last year. Wow!
The Mirage (aka Space Star) is way cheaper in Europe (starts around 12.000€) and very popular here, because it is basically one of the cheapest new cars you can get.
I know Doug was talking modern cars but let me tell you as an old man now. I got military orders to go to California in the 70's. My wife found a job and needed a commuting car and I found another GI going to Germany and he sold me his wife's (NOW GET THIS) two year old 1974 FORD PINTO for I think 1400 dollars. It was putrid green, two door coupe, no options but a floor mounted automatic transmission. If you called this car BAD it would be a compliment!
The Encore and Encore GX are completely different vehicles. The Encore is a subcompact SUV, in production for the 2013 to 2022 model years. The Encore GX is a "subcompact plus" sharing the same platform as the new Trailblazer, and was introduced for the 2020 model year. The Envista is a new subcompact that is replacing the original discontinued Encore.
But why the GX in its name? When the Encore GX was first introduced, it was intended to be a larger version of the Encore and now that the Envista is here, there’s no point in the GX name being there.
@@the_enigma24 The Encore GX has several (important) options and features that are simply not available on the Envista. THAT is why the Envista sells for less, despite being physically larger.
Agreed - I think the model Y definitely is a better buy than the Audi for the most part (like sure you’re not getting as good of a build quality and some other annoying Tesla features, but it is 10k cheaper) but I don’t think that is bad enough a sin to be put as the 3rd worst car you can buy imo. If you ignore the fact you can get the model y for less, I think it’s still a pretty solid car.
MKBHD said it best, Teslas have some of the best electric power trains money can buy, PERIOD, but their build quality, interiors, and other fine details that older, more established automakers gain through decades and even centuries of experience are going to be subpar for a while.
The encore gx is only around because it’s available in AWD and the envista is FWD only. It also has more space, an exterior and interior redesign that looks pretty decent. It’s still not a great vehicle but I understand why they still build it being a Chevy/buick sales man in Minnesota we sell more encores than envista because of our environment so I certainly appreciate them
@Sandvich42 and yet nowadays even the Chinese are dumping them and getting Buicks less and less. Even before the pandemic, Buick sales had begun falling there the two to three years prior. GM was so short-sighted keeping Buick around.
The higher starting price is for the FWD version so his point is still valid. If Buick gave the Encore GX standard AWD and kept the same starting price it would make more sense.
Toyota made the bz4x bad on purpose, I'm positive. They didn't want to make electric vehicles for a long time and it seems they made it just to say "SEE? the future is hybrids and hydrogen!" They released the rav4 hybrid almost at the same time to highlight their point even more.
Toyoda and his loyalists almost certainly sabotaged the project from day 1. And, by making such a bad car, they managed to back the new management into such a corner that they had no choice but to fall back to making more hybrids for half a decade or more because they had to start over from zero on their EV architecture. It's the same thing with the PHEVs, Toyoda purposely limited production of the best vehicles Toyota makes rather than sourcing more batteries and retooling factories because he was all in on standard hybrids and hydrogen. There is a reason he's gone now, and it's not hard to see why. He set the company back a decade and reduced their value in the market substantially as a result.
And, it seems they may be right, at least for now. EVs are still very expensive to build, the batteries, for now, still need materials that are nightmare to get and PR disaster and are not viable to replace, the range/charge time is still unsatisfactory and the infrastructure isn't quite there even for today's number of vehicles, let alone if all cars will be EV. On top of that the R&D of EVs took so much resources that the traditional manufacturers who previously had upper hand over Tesla in everything else except propulsion and a giant tablet, are now falling behind even the Chinese, and are struggling to make profits on any market that does not offer heavy government incentives. Meanwhile Toyota end Mazda continue to sell IC/hybrids easily and are waiting for others to do the hard work - when time comes, they're big enough to just buy a supplier that has the tech. In the meantime they can research other tech that nobody else have money for anymore, which might get them upper hand, in case of success.
How many committees and decision points are there from going from concept drawing to showroom floor and nobody stopped to say "this is just plain awful". It had to be deliberately bad but could you imagine being an engineer assigned to this project ? "We know you're all nerds who like to work on cutting edge technology but make this car lousy in every possible aspect. Benchmark the competitors for range, charge time and acceleration, then make sure this is worse. Make the driver ergonomics so unusable that buyers will dream of the austere Model Y cockpit. And of course make it so ugly that even its mother would take it out back and shoot it out of sympathy. We'll then pass it on to marketing and tell them to sell it for thousands more than anything else ... that should teach a lesson to all those who say EVs are the future".
@@ezustnyil8414 It's hard to contradict something without any evidence to counter it. The Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime are unobtanium, they sell them as fast as they make them. But they don't make many of them, because of Toyoda management decisions about batteries and factory allocation. There's a good chance that PHEVs would be taking a big bite out of HEV sales if they had them to sell, but Toyoda didn't want to prove that battery tech was the future so he made sure they couldn't.
When my car was rear ended, the other persons insurance was only going to cover $40/day for a rental while mine was being repaired. The only car I could get for that much was a.... Mitsubishi Mirage. I said "No thanks, I would rather walk".
They are not that bad. I used to use my mums, got it when she passed away but I had a Grand Cherokee so gave it to my niece for her first car. Though I think Doug saying it does 0-60 in 11 seconds I think he meant 0-40. To get to 60 my guess would be about 16 seconds. Putting the foot down doesn't do anything with that stupid CVT which is the main reason I got rid of it. As a manual I think it would be respectable.
I’d say the Mirage is probably the fifth best car for sale in the US. Bulletproof reliability, high MPG, quite comfortable if you aren’t 6’ 5’’ and you don’t weigh 220+ lbs
My friend bought a 2017 Mirage G4 (the sedan) in late 2017 as the 2018s were coming out, he got it for $9,995. That was even him opting for the auto, the manual one was $8,995 at the same dealer. This was in Vancouver, WA. He specifically bought it after buying a used Acura that ended up being terrible. He had it for about 4 years before his wife wrecked it. He never had any issues with it, and his wife liked it so they ended up buying her one too, but she got the hatchback. I have to say, getting 40 mpg on the highway was pretty nice.
Doug is comparing these cars brand new north American market which its a 18k car now used where even near new ones are 8k so I don’t get why everyone is only claiming “oh its not a bad car used” yea I’m sure it isn’t
I would say the market is the exact opposite of "no bad cars" but rather a lot of bad cars. Nearly every brand is plagued with engine issues, transmission issues, cheap parts, plastic in place of metal alloys, corrosion issues and failures of the excess amounts of technology in every vehicle. Engines failing with under 1000 miles, transmission shudders and failures at low miles. There really isn't much for A-B cars anymore. The old-school Corolla's, Maxima's, Civics, Sunfire's, Cavaliers, Neon's, Focus' and so many more that were base-level technology, extremely reliable, cheap to drive and maintain and generally just great for those on a budget. Nearly every small car now is boosted, turbo failures are through the roof, top-end carbon build-up in Direct Injected engines. Let's also not forget that the high-pressure fuel pumps and injectors are more inline with a diesel for maintenance cost. Timing issues are rampant across many makes and models. Excessive oil consumption, PCV issues, broken spark plugs, head-gasket issues, water-pump failures it's insane. The number of vehicles I see mechanically totaled under 150k miles is unreal. The one's under 100k miles are even scarier. Longevity is something that many, especially used car buyers, care about immensely. I expect any well maintained vehicle to hit 200k miles without any catastrophic failures. Obviously there are lemons, and how you treat your vehicle makes a world of difference, but I think we are in an epidemic of vehicles that are being made with the cheapest sub-par parts, but being sold at astronomical costs that often don't even make it through the warranty period. There are few (I won't say none) new models that would reliably hit that target on the large majority of their vehicles driving down the road.
We’ve been in a modern malaise era of cars for the past 10 years at least. Everything is about profits for the manufacturers and building the biggest ugliest cars for the lowest cost, and selling them for the highest price possible. All thanks to American consumer ignorance, lack of proper regulation for vehicles deemed as “light truck”, and good ol corporate greed. It’s a shame that modern consumers “only want” fat, top heavy, minivans with sloppy handling, high belt lines, poor visibility, iPad dashboards, 20 cameras and phone chargers, poor fuel economy, complex and expensive hybrid and AWD systems, useless ground clearance, ugly plastic fenders and an average price tag of $50.000, but thats the unfortunate world we live in today. What baffles me even more is that normie consumers just can’t seem to understand that we all deserve better as consumers. Not everyone wants or needs a crossover, and yet some manufacturers are even beginning to take that choice away from us.
@FreddyOJohnny This is almost exactly why I have grown to hate crossovers, SUVs and most pickups. It's sad how much the normie consumer will fold to the popular thing for status instead of looking at actually nice cars because "theyre small". I had a 2015 Ford Fusion SE base model and Ive never had an issue with it for anything. It can offroad well, it can go a decent speed, it has great gas mileage, it has tons of space, it was lots of comfortable luxury for a family sedan that seats 5 with almost as much storage as a pickup if the backseats are down. The internals are nearly flawless, the Duratec 1.5l and 2.5l are so reliable and strong that the entire chassis will fall into pieces before the engine needs a replacement. This is one example of cars that we DESERVE to have. I blame idiots for becoming crossover/suv/pickup losers amidst the crumbling economy that is only accelerated by their poor choices
Not only are most used cars better than a new Mirage, a used Mirage is better than a new Mirage because it doesn't involve lighting $3,000-$5,000 on fire for depreciation.
@@coryhigh87 Fun one, when I bought my Mirage in early October, 2023, the new Mirage was cheaper than some used ones on the local market with 20,000 miles! Haha. Thought that was insane. Now cheaper is used.
The mirage is stupid easy to work on though. Simple inline3 with no turbo is also super reliable. The versa is hot garbage with a junk engine. There are multiple things to think about before buying a car
Yup! I drive about 27,000 miles a year, reliable and easy to work on is very high on the list of things I need. And also cheap on gas. Over the past 15,250 miles, I've averaged 51.3 MPG. Lots of freeway driving with some mountain driving. On the freeway I go 55 MPH, but it can go much faster, you can cruise at 80 MPH if you wanted.

No matter how "unreliable" a certain car has a reputation for being, there are always going to be some owners who have had no trouble with theirs. Your friend is very lucky. In the same vein, I'm sure that there are people who bought the most reliable vehicle that Toyota has ever built, only to have problems upon problems with it.

I have a friend who bought a Buick Encore new a couple of years back; she had multiple problems with the car, basically had to live at the dealership while things were getting fixed under warranty, but before it got to 36K miles, she traded it in for a loaded but used Toyota Rav 4 she way overpaid for. I bought a new 22 Hyundai Tucson, didnt pay over MSRP and got a sweet very low finance rate and the safety tech in the car is amazing.
@@smitdizz420No dude Toyotas are not good anymore nothing is you ain’t getting no Rav4 hybrid to last 30 years and also my friends got a V6 Tiburon with 400000km and yet you claim Hyundai is trash
Doug seems to think that the only parameters for an electric car are range and power. What if you don't like the horrendous Tesla interiors for example?
You get a Hyundai. How slowly the Toyota/Subaru thing charges compared to every other EV is ridiculous. My worst charging speed on my Ioniq 6 at an L3 is faster than the best the Solterra ever gets.
When you sit in a bZ4X and find that the steering wheel is blocking your view of the display you'll know it was a feeble attempt. No other Toyota in recent memory has that many compromises from weird styling choices to missing gloveboxes to a sea of piano black.
Right? I'm not in the market for SUVs but If I was I would 100% pay 10k more for the audi over that tesla. Looks sooooo much better, and I'm sure the interior and quality is way higher too
The thing does suck though. You buy it for $18,000 then as soon as you leave the lot bouncing off the rev limiter going 45 on an uphill on-ramp it's worth $8,500.
I think Doug's biggest problem with the Mirage is that it has zero quirks and zero features. This car is the 21st century VW Beatle (the old one) and he's a Ferrari guy.
That comparison is totally invalid. I had a 72 VW Beetle (you can't even spell it correctly) for 4 years and enjoyed it a lot. It was bulletproof, fun to drive, reliable, and economical. It was also one of the most iconic cars of all time. Comparing the original Beetle to today's Mirage is an insult to all of the bug lovers out there.
@johnwjeromejr It wasn't fun to drive. My dad had one when I was a kid. It would do 60 with a tailwind, took forever to get to cruising speed. You call that fun?
I think Doug is a little mistaken when it comes to the Buick lineup, which I don't blame him, GM has done a terrible job with Buick in North America. So there is the Buick Encore and then there is the Buick Encore GX. The Buick Encore was based on the same platform as the Chevy Trax, and the redesigned Chevy Trax has now turned into the Buick Envista. The standard Buick Encore and the terrible last generation Chevy Trax are no longer sold. The Buick Encore GX is on the same platform as the Chevy Trailblazer, which arguably isn't that bad of a car. Both of these car are still sold. So they basically have the same exact lineup as Chevy when it comes their small SUVs. Source: GM Dealer Technician
@@PresidentMcAwesomesauce That is correct, they're both only front wheel drive. So it's only the Encore GX and Trailblazer that have the all wheel drive.
@@BStreet666 So these are using a revised version of the engine in the Encore GX, which has had some reliability issues early on, but they seem to have fixed them. It's hard to say this early on if they'll be reliable though. I'd say that as long as you are on top of maintenance, it should be reliable to at least 80k miles. The reception of the Envista has been really good so far, they drive pretty well and has a pretty decent interior for the money. The only thing about the more recent GM vehicles is that their interior fabrics and materials seem to wear out pretty quickly, like the steering wheel leathers looks shiny after 30k miles and the foam in the seats fail after 60k or so miles depending on the vehicles. Granted most of those things can be avoided if you just take care of the car. TLDR: If you do the recommend maintenance and take care of it, it's reliable. Would I buy one? I personally think the Encore GX looks better, and it also just got a refresh, so I'd probably buy that over the Envista, but that wouldn't stop me from recommending that someone buys it.
I test drive one and loved it. It makes a ton of sense when you live with it for a little while. It’s just, no one is asking for that kind of car anymore.
When people say there are no bad cars anymore, they are referring to a time when there were new cars that would not reliably deliver transportation. Imagine buying a Chevy Vega and having the front fenders rust and an engine rebuild required before you finished the payments. Or an Olds Diesel that required major engine work within the warranty period. But the dealer was backed up with other similar issues. That kind of thing is fortunately pretty rare today. This is a list of comically uncompetitive cars, which is more common and makes one wonder how they got the product positioning so wrong. As markets get really competitive, this seems to happen more often. If for the same (or less) money you can get a better car from a more popular brand -- somebody messed up big!

The biggest problem for the Mirage is lack of value… if the MSRP were $11,995, it would be a much more attractive value option.
Nah, it needs to be cheaper, maybe $6,499 then it'd be an okay-ish new car
Soltera dealer are offering $250/month leases to get them out the door.
Plus, the Audi won't drive itself into the back of a parked ambulance.
I would definitely take the Q4 over the Model Y, I wouldn't even consider the model Y.

Three constants.
Death, taxes, and Doug’s dislike of the Mirage.
TAXATION IS THEFT.

A Honda Fit rides better than something?
That used 4-5 year old Fit is out of warranty while a new Mirage has a 10 year warranty, big difference

The Encore GX is a nice small suv.

It’s still not a great vehicle but I understand why they still build it being a Chevy/buick sales man in Minnesota we sell more encores than envista because of our environment so I certainly appreciate them
@Sandvich42 100% true, it’s sad where they have fallen GM just doesn’t seem to care about them anymore
@Sandvich42 and yet nowadays even the Chinese are dumping them and getting Buicks less and less. Even before the pandemic, Buick sales had begun falling there the two to three years prior. GM was so short-sighted keeping Buick around.
I think the Encore looks better than the Envista, and I suspect most Buick buyers would think so too.

@@jaturnley Toyota HEV sales contradict your statement.

Thank you for making my morning Doug. You need to do more of these!
Easily the best Doug video this year. Angry doug is HILARIOUS
I’d say the Mirage is probably the fifth best car for sale in the US. Bulletproof reliability, high MPG, quite comfortable if you aren’t 6’ 5’’ and you don’t weigh 220+ lbs
And if you buy one you’ll want for all while you operate it.
You're one of the people Doug actually spoke about. How is that guy right so consistently?
My friend bought a 2017 Mirage G4 (the sedan) in late 2017 as the 2018s were coming out, he got it for $9,995. That was even him opting for the auto, the manual one was $8,995 at the same dealer. This was in Vancouver, WA. He specifically bought it after buying a used Acura that ended up being terrible. He had it for about 4 years before his wife wrecked it. He never had any issues with it, and his wife liked it so they ended up buying her one too, but she got the hatchback. I have to say, getting 40 mpg on the highway was pretty nice.
The dashboard-light web site, from inspection of actual trade-ins going to auction, lists reliability of the Mirage as slightly below average.
A brilliant and enlightening expose (of the Stateside repair experience ?)

@@jeffb.6642 Is not only her experience, I don’t see any reports of major issues unlike Hyundai Theta Engine, Chrysler vehicles in general or Nissans bad CVT … Doug can crap on Mitsu all he wants but please bring facts into the table don’t just spew BS because is not a popular car
@@jeffb.6642 The Mirage/Space Star in fact IS one of the most reliable cars. If there are problems it is probably with the CVT transmission, but manual is bullet proof.
Man that's ancedoctal as it gets. LOL. My friend of a friend had this car and it drove well for her 9 years ago. Ergo all Mirage's are reliable and has no problems.

It's always I had a friend or my cousin etc etc 💀
Difference is your Hyundai is trash and her Rav will last 20-30 years
@@smitdizz420 naah hyundai is also VERY reliable. Do not confuse with Chinese cars

Then you look at the Mach-E
You get a Hyundai. How slowly the Toyota/Subaru thing charges compared to every other EV is ridiculous. My worst charging speed on my Ioniq 6 at an L3 is faster than the best the Solterra ever gets.
When you sit in a bZ4X and find that the steering wheel is blocking your view of the display you'll know it was a feeble attempt. No other Toyota in recent memory has that many compromises from weird styling choices to missing gloveboxes to a sea of piano black.
@@-Jethro- ..and the fake carbon, and you go: 'Nope, not for me.' But I did not buy a Tesla because of a) those interiors, and b) Elon is a git.
Right? I'm not in the market for SUVs but If I was I would 100% pay 10k more for the audi over that tesla. Looks sooooo much better, and I'm sure the interior and quality is way higher too
The 4 Cylinder C63 AMG.
Not even a question.
I like all of your reviews you describe everything with a sens of humour. Keep up with the good work. Thank you.
The Doug vs Mitsubishi Mirage saga continues, lol. It's become a meme
The old Beetle at least had charm and character.

What's the number one mechanical problem with the Envista's and would you buy one?
If the envisaged is the new trax platform that would also mean it’s not available in AWD since the new trax is FWD only correct?
Toyota Crown breathes a huge sigh of relief, at somehow avoiding being on this list.
The crown is cool
The crown is a beautiful car though!
I test drive one and loved it. It makes a ton of sense when you live with it for a little while. It’s just, no one is asking for that kind of car anymore.
Probably the case of good car but terrible business decision.
Crown is no where near the bottom. Wish the US got the Crown Sport
2:50 “So I can live out my inner whistlin diesel” 🤣😂
The Encore GX makes sence because it's availiable with AWD and more powerful engines. Both of which the Envista isn't offered with.

@@LAndrewsChannel and what was it designed to do exactly ? because it can't do long travels as it's an EV, it can't tow as it's an EV and the battery would tank down at the speed of light, it can't be a city car because your groceries will get stolen from your bed and it's too big to park.
@@Ted_Kenzoku Ah yes, "I've done 0 research about the thing and I tell you it's useless".
1) It is a Tesla, it has good range for an EV and the network in the US to do the occasional long distance trip with charging breaks every once in a while, which, if you care any bit about your health, you should do anyway.
2) Not everyone gets a truck for towing so why is that so relevant? I said specifically "lifestyle truck", not work truck. That means it is pretty much used as a big "car" with a bed, NOT for towing.
3) "your groceries will get stolen from your bed" - what? Did you ever see the back of the truck? It literally has a built-in cover there.
4) "too big to park" - it is as difficult to park as any other big truck/SUV so this is a dumb point.
Buick new Envista only comes with front wheel drive and the Encore is available with All wheel drive, that could be why thy carry both models.
