Need I remind you what Gabe said at the end of this video? He said that Half-Life is a vehicle to deliver innovation to gamers. The very last thing he says in this video is that there's no shortage of innovations to be made. I'll let you put together what he means.
@@EL1TEHD1 That's what we've been hearing since forever, yet no HL3. "OMG SOME TEXTURES LEAKED" "OMG SOURCE 2 HAD SOME FILES THAT MAY BE RELATED TO HL3"
@@TabbuEme what you fail to understand is that HL3 has existed in multiple forms at Valve since 2012, all of them cancelled. What is different now is that for the past 2 years Valve has hired many new developers, level designers, artists, etc., and we know for a fact that they are working on the next Half Life. All of that points to something promising coming soon
It's a shame we didn't get to see the planned Episode 3. After that, it seemed like the franchise would never appear again, but Half-Life: Alyx was something new and interesting in the franchise. Hopefully, we'll be able to live to see the release of Half-Life 3. The trailer for that game will get more views than the GTA 6 trailer.
If you are thinking Alyx was a good idea, it's not. The game itself was a nice tech demo but VR itself is not a product which the majority of people can enjoy and it's still a glorified gimmick. I TBH don't like how Valve is using this franchise. It's a very beloved franchise of mine so I want the story to finally come to an end which it deserves.
@@real-raiden-ei Calling alyx a tech demo is crazy. Its a full game. 20 hours of gameplay. Satisfying gameplay. Great arstyle and visual quality. A solid story. Idk why you considrr alyx a demo. Because its VR? That doesnt seem fair.
Actually not! Episode 3 was only supposed to end the combine saga, and(just like half-life 2 has almost nothing to do with Half-Life 1) Half-Life 3 would take place even further into the future and the consequences of the reasonance cascade.
The experiences Valve gave us will never be forgotten, I still get chills from hearing a background ambient sound... From HL, Gmod, CS, and all other multiplayer mods, it was truly a remarkable gaming experience which I doubt newer generations will ever get to experience.
"Welcome. Welcome to City 17. You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining urban centers. I thought so much of City 17 that I elected to establish my Administration here, in the Citadel so thoughtfully provided by Our Benefactors. I have been proud to call City 17 my home. And so, whether you are here to stay, or passing through on your way to parts unknown, welcome to City 17. It's safer here."
I remember waiting for hours to see the E3 demo. My company sent me out there (I work for the guys who created Golden Tee Golf), and I came back and raved about the physics, telling them we should consider licensing the engine. Mind blowing is an understatement. Doom 3 was impressive, but the way everything in the Source 2 engine had properties that defined them as wood, concrete, glass, etc. suddenly made video games so much more dynamic. Up until then, even in the original Half-life, every interaction had to be meticulously planned out, and could only ever unfold in that one, intended way. Suddenly with physics, things never even thought about in advance could happen, and everything would just play out realistically.
This documentary makes you realize how a lot of new games will never achieve this kind of success, just look at the huge talent of those 300 geniouses gathered making all those good games and how professional and dedicated are to their projects. If other studios could learn something from this video we could reach a new golden game era.
Sometimes I really wish I was old enough to experience the launch of Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. What a shame. I am grateful to have been alive to play it regardless, thank you Valve for the best gaming experiences of my life!
Even playing the games now, you can definitely feel their influence on games that came after. Biggest one that comes to my mind is half life 1 to halo 1.
Me too, I was too young to experience HL2 when it was released but I played it 10 years later when I was a teenager and I loved the game so much and everything that game from it. HL2 is the reason Garry's Mod exists and I sunk so much time into that in my childhood
Half Life 2 had a huge impact on me growing up. It wasn't just a game to me, it was an experience. I must've have played it from beginning to end dozens of times, even knew some dialog by memory. Thank you so much for this
Half-Life 2 is such a unique experience, it's a living memory, no matter how many times how many hours i truly never got tired of playing this game.. each chapter of the game had it's own charm, the environment, atmosphere is alive and it's easy to get lost in the melancholy, oppresive, immersive world of it. though they got so many challenges during the game's development, the final product turns out to be a spectacular phenomenon, a game that's just unforgettable and it's worth it.. this is an example of a game made with heart and soul. it is an important and a very dear game to many of us. an old friend that keeps me coming back to it. everytime i'm bored or i had nothing to do, getting burnt out from stuff in life, i open Half-Life 2, select a chapter and just replay it again.. my personal favorite was Highway 17, i like to take a breath as i enjoy and feel the landscape of the desolate, solemn coast. thank you Valve, for bringing Half-Life 2 to this world.
There was one released as a mod of sorts. Albeit a community commentary featuring guys like Caddicarus, ProJared, Some of the DYKG guys, and Ross Scott (this was back in 2014-2015)
Had my steam account since 3 months after Steam first released (28 Sep 2003). It's now got the 21 years of Service badge and it's crazy to think how different the world was way back then. The 2003 E3 demo footage that someone recorded made it's way online and people went nuts, because no one had ever seen that level of realism before, I watched it may times and was very excited. Steam really did help change the world and even if most people are cynical about early access / greenlight. It has enabled much smaller developers to ship their products without needing big deals and box-ticking mechanics. It's enabled some really goofy and crazy visions to get made and distributed from bedroom coders in a way which seemed in the late 90s and 2000s to be dying out. So thanks Valve for the great times and the awesome software. I can't wait to see what you guys do next.
Coincidentally, today I was reminiscing about playing Half-Life 2: Episode 2 for hours, specifically the final part, after a long time away from it. Then, suddenly, this gem of a 20th-anniversary video mysteriously appeared to me. A pleasant and satisfying coincidence !! :D
Born in 1997, HL2 being my childhood, I knew HL 1 and 2 with cracked copies living in Serbia. But When My mom moved to France, where I live now, she bought me the Orange Box when I was 12. I finished that in about 15 hours as a kid, my dad even complained I was on my PC too much. YET. Seeing this, I feel finaly blessed. Thank you Gaben.
As a kid in 2006, I picked up the sole copy of Half-Life 2 from the shelf of a local supermarket. 18 years later would I come to realize that Raising the Bar; SET THE BAR to define a new generation of gaming. Thanks Valve and the original Half-Life 2 team, for inspiring me today in pursuing Computer Engineering and game development as a career!
when I was little, I replayed half-life 2 up to the Ravenholm 6 or 7 times because I was so unbelievably scared of it. Then, one day I decided that enough is enough and played small portions of it, I think whole chapter took me a month to complete, even though it's like a couple of hours in game
Man I love how Valve started comunicating with us again and are actually showing us some really cool stuff from behind the scenes. Happy 20th anniversary Half Life 2.
It's insane to think that Half Life 2 is already 20 years old. It's a game that was way more advenced for its time than we think. And it's still such an amazing game and franchise.

The very last thing he says in this video is that there's no shortage of innovations to be made. I'll let you put together what he means.
@@EL1TEHD1 source?
Played HL2 for the first time at the end of last year. Amazing game for its time and still good today.
"Are you seriously watching a 2 hour documentary about Half-Life 2 by yourself?"
"No, I'm with the science team!"
AHHHHHHHHHHHH
Those city combine used to have long overcoats? .....yo thats cool 😮
@@real-raiden-ei don't call Alyx just a tech demo tho, The lab is a tech demo, Half-Life Alyx is a full fledged game.
I hope one day they will finish episode 3
The experiences Valve gave us will never be forgotten, I still get chills from hearing a background ambient sound... From HL, Gmod, CS, and all other multiplayer mods, it was truly a remarkable gaming experience which I doubt newer generations will ever get to experience.
Half-Life 2 will forever be one of the greatest first-person shooter games I've ever played.
Thank you Valve.
Valve really just dropped a 2 hour documentary with literally 0 warning lol most Valve thing ever
lol
literally, maybe in 20 years they'll release half life 3 documentary
@@KurtIsNowTakenmaybe in 20 years they’ll release half life 3
I was expecting this documentary though bc they dropped on for hl
1:53:32 For the ones looking for the Episode 3 clip

yup he did say that
1:05:41 Gabe Newell talking about almost being bitten by a shark whilst a glass shark sculpture is behind him is kinda funny lol
People like Viktor Antonov make me proud to be a Bulgarian. Without him Half-Life 2 just wouldn't have had the same vibe
He has captured the life in bulgaria very well
Neither would Dishonored. Since he was behind a lot of designs for that game.

HAPPY 20TH HALF LIFE 2!!!
Last time I was this early, I was arrested in Germany for stealing Half Life 2's source code...
Are you that guy?
I remember waiting for hours to see the E3 demo. My company sent me out there (I work for the guys who created Golden Tee Golf), and I came back and raved about the physics, telling them we should consider licensing the engine. Mind blowing is an understatement. Doom 3 was impressive, but the way everything in the Source 2 engine had properties that defined them as wood, concrete, glass, etc. suddenly made video games so much more dynamic. Up until then, even in the original Half-life, every interaction had to be meticulously planned out, and could only ever unfold in that one, intended way. Suddenly with physics, things never even thought about in advance could happen, and everything would just play out realistically.
really interesting comment!
Already 20 years since game was released.
Never felt so old...
Виктор Антонов, спасибо вам за фиксацию и атмосферу. Мы все оценили это 😊
HL2 is the reason Garry's Mod exists and I sunk so much time into that in my childhood
born too late to experience hl1 at launch born too early to experience hl3 launch born just in time to play the peak fiction that is hl1 and hl2
Half life 1 documentary : 1 hour
Half life 2 documentary : 2 hours

Still can't believe that this game was released in 2004. Anyway, happy anniversary Half-Life 2
Half Life 2 had a huge impact on me growing up. It wasn't just a game to me, it was an experience. I must've have played it from beginning to end dozens of times, even knew some dialog by memory. Thank you so much for this
2 hours... locking in.

Half-Life 2 is such a unique experience, it's a living memory, no matter how many times how many hours i truly never got tired of playing this game.. each chapter of the game had it's own charm, the environment, atmosphere is alive and it's easy to get lost in the melancholy, oppresive, immersive world of it. though they got so many challenges during the game's development, the final product turns out to be a spectacular phenomenon, a game that's just unforgettable and it's worth it..
this is an example of a game made with heart and soul. it is an important and a very dear game to many of us. an old friend that keeps me coming back to it.
everytime i'm bored or i had nothing to do, getting burnt out from stuff in life, i open Half-Life 2, select a chapter and just replay it again.. my personal favorite was Highway 17, i like to take a breath as i enjoy and feel the landscape of the desolate, solemn coast.
thank you Valve,
for bringing Half-Life 2 to this world.
They also added commentary to base HL2! Time to replay!
There was one released as a mod of sorts. Albeit a community commentary featuring guys like Caddicarus, ProJared, Some of the DYKG guys, and Ross Scott (this was back in 2014-2015)
Wasn't expecting this, but now today's plans have been adjusted.
"The right man in the wrong place, can make all the difference in the world. So wake up Mr. Freeman, wake up and smell the ashes."
1:58:06 did he say 3!!!!!!!????? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 GABEN SAY 3
1:55:13 is where they start talking about Episode 3
Fellas, are we actually getting HL3 in a couple years?
12:00 No way, he said the thing, he said it.
It's been 84 Years Valve...
The blob and the ice gun looked amazing!
Valve has been kicking ass lately
Realizing that its been 20 years kinda hurts my brain
As a kid in 2006, I picked up the sole copy of Half-Life 2 from the shelf of a local supermarket. 18 years later would I come to realize that Raising the Bar; SET THE BAR to define a new generation of gaming. Thanks Valve and the original Half-Life 2 team, for inspiring me today in pursuing Computer Engineering and game development as a career!
Such a good game.
I'm not crying, it's just a crowbar in my eye...
I am so glad they included the "Now this'll run on my 486" guy from the E3 demo. True icon.
Seeing Lord Gaben getting healthy ( I hoped, since he lost weight ) bought tear to my eyes. We gonna be blessed with him for a long time.
Happy 20th anniversary to Half-Life 2
cool
1:00:00 I can recognize that No Clip voice anymore. Happy they were able to make this.
when I was little, I replayed half-life 2 up to the Ravenholm 6 or 7 times because I was so unbelievably scared of it. Then, one day I decided that enough is enough and played small portions of it, I think whole chapter took me a month to complete, even though it's like a couple of hours in game
Them scream from zombies were scary as hell

THANKS VALVE, FOR EVERYTHING
Valve's sound design doesn't get enough credit, ya'll have been on point since day one.
IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! AND TWO HOURS AT THAT
Man I love how Valve started comunicating with us again and are actually showing us some really cool stuff from behind the scenes. Happy 20th anniversary Half Life 2.
It's insane to think that Half Life 2 is already 20 years old. It's a game that was way more advenced for its time than we think. And it's still such an amazing game and franchise.
Ashamed. We didn't see the original voice of Eli Vance as he passes away at 2017.
I did not plan to watch a 2 hour documentary tonight, but here we are
1:04:58 Gaben is so amazing that he was prepared to file for bankruptcy in order to prevent that valve from failing. That is simply amazing.
I don’t believe it, we got Valve sharing everything Half-Life before GTA 6
And might I add Half Life 3 (HLX leaks)
