This has been my trick for running old outdated equipment for generations. An easy fix, but sadly not realistic. Asset reduction. Getting my 20-30 fps however I can and trying to maintain it. But this is a good benchmark test you did and very much better than most. I tell my friend all the time, if you can run JFK at night in a t-storm with some traffic…and get 20-30 fps, you have a good setup if running 2 or 4k.

Thank you so much!!!!! I have a GTX 1660 SUPER and with medium graphic i got 15 fps close to the ground but now with ultra setting close to the ground I got 30-40 even 50 fps.
Your English is very good. What you describe I found out from day 1 in MSFS when it came out. I had a GTX1080 TI and abysmal FPS. The first thing I did was to turn off parked aircraft, airport traffic and almost anything that moved. And hey, 35 to 40 fps on a good day. Now I have a RTX 3070 TI with the same relatively high settings and 60 fps. The graphics card and CPU will determine where you can end up with your frame rate towards the top. Badly programmed AI traffic will destroy your frames. FSTL is freeware. JustFlight has just released Traffic Global and claims they are even better with their models. I have not bought it yet. Using VATSIM or IVAO etc can lower your fps on a busy day. But if you make sure that you do not use any of the MSFS models, you should be fine. Good stuff, thanks that you point this out so specifically. Often this hides in videos about general settings (I did that too) and the importance of dynamic traffic is not realized out there.
Just a small suggestion for these two videos: Include a description that outlines what the outcome/conclusion is. Alternatively a conclusion section with a timestamp, so we can check if its the same thing we've already done. Save us watching through an hour to try and find all the setting sections when we've already tweaked with and without traffic turned on, but just came to the video because were curious if it was about something else.
Your cpu is very likely limited by main thread. You are looking at the performance of the cpu as a whole, you need to see individual threads and there'll be one that's mostly maxed out. You can find if you're main thread limited with frame rate count tool in developer mode. The settings you lowered are cpu intensive hence the better performance and probably the only solution other than getting a more powerful cpu, or waiting for Microsoft to optimise the sim.
@@autonormalverbraucher yes, that's a powerful processor, albeit intel is now on a 13th generation i9s I believe. But if you have a powerful GPU it will allways bottleneck the CPU first while the card sits at 60 to 80 percent most of the time, at ultra settings. LODs are a killer, I can't use it above 100
@@autonormalverbraucher H A is correct. The sim is single-threaded so one of your CPU cores is maxed out. Hence, the bottleneck is your CPU. I'm running an I-9 12900k, and I experience the same issue. Breaking the multi-thread barrier is apparently a hard thing to do.
@@VirtualAviationAviator Thats a mythos everybody is talking about. I will make a video to show the truth of Hyperthreading to end this mythso right now.
That is what you find out first: AI Traffic makes the game stutter more and more every second. This is because if you set the traffic very high then the flight sim has to handle lots and lots of AI with all the complex movement included. The reason is that MSFS tries to syncronize the Traffic with you, and the sim stops for a millisecond whenever he has to correct the time between you and the Air Traffic. This adds up whenever annother Traffic is added. If you are close to that traffic it even has to show the movement on your screen - It kills any good framerate you have, no matter the graphics settings or resolution. I recommend flying with AI Traffic off but All Players shown. If you come to an airport with lots of players on it or around it - It will start to stutter again - But that is unavoidable. Sometimes you see Players warp through the sky or into the ground - That is when the other guy has lag or loses connection. So the System stops to try to match the Player Traffic to your System - This causes no frame loss but really weird Player Traffic.
Oh, i never fly with Multiplayer Traffic, i only use FSLTL, there are no real Players. FSLTL just uses Flightradar to make his own Routes, but they are not synced to Realtime.
I put the hurt on my PC. Fly the Fenix a320, almost all the time. Only fly to 3rd party custom airports. Mostly larger airports as I fly for Delta in A Pilots Life 2. So yeah….I can relate to low frame rates. Ive found two things to help….significantly. First, is the lossless scaler, which I only use for the frame generation (much easier and smoother than frame generation via gpu). Secondly, the Auto FPS (dynamic level of detail) app. Which lowers level of detail settings as you descend.
I think it has to do with the MSFS servers. My cable company throttles the bandwidth to MSFS servers and I get a lot of stuttering and low framerates. If I connect to my VPN and POOF almost all of those issues disappear.
@@WnDTech I have set up a one terabyte rolling cache file on a different drive I installed MSFS on. It has largely solved a lot of those issues. When I monitor how much data MSFS is using now it barely is using anything at all.

Thank you so much for this video, I have been struggling with this for the past year but never thought that traffic would have such a huge affect. I upgraded my vid card last year to a 4070ti because my old gpu was the obvious problem, yet FPS did not improve and CPU / GPU usage is low like 20%. I have an 11900k with 32 gigs of 3600 ram and the game was never maxing out a single core, highest 1 core would go up to is 50%. The game seems to have some major problem with AI, switch to online traffic helps but shutting of traffic and AI generated things makes a huge difference. It's really unfortunate that 3.5 yrs and the game still can't efficiently use cpu cores to generate AI traffic, maybe they think most people will play online ?
@@matejmarosz20 It's actually very difficult to write a true multi-threaded program of the complexity of MSFS. It runs well over 100 threads and they all need to synchronise with each other with the main thread waiting for them.

If you look at your cpu individual threads you will se that one of them are at 100%, traffic on the ground are cpu depended, you will also see that in developer mode that you are main tread limited, so your problem are a weak cpu.
This should be the logical thing first thought out, same with when you are flying in busy cities like new york or tokyo, your FPS will drop as it is also objects that the GPU needs to render and apply shadows and so on. Note that this also applies to thick clouds cover or heavy fog.
Not really, I switched from a 1080ti to a 4090 last year and the fps count with frame generation off is virtually the same so the graphics card in this game makes virtually no difference.
@@Criisko Thats CPU bottleneck that is why when you change GPU it is still virtually the same. Also note that 4090 is more effective on 4K resolutions rather than 1080p as it has more CUDA cores.
@@RiemsAI Of course it does, but it shows how irrelevant the graphics card is in this game when a 5 year old 1080ti was already achieving similar results

No point in having low traffic and ground movements, unless you're running a low-end CPU and GPU. You need a CPU that renders well, and a GPU that does the same. Many people are obsessed with high Frame rate, but 60 to 80FPS is the right FPS to aim for. Set your system up right. Wait until MFS 2024, then you're get problems unless you have a good CPU and GPU. Rendering is KEY to all traffic.
Thank you for this video, it is very well done. However, my question is to do with type of aircraft - I do have FSLTL but I only the the Base Option for VATSIM Model Matching. I did not use the Injector Option because it seems to only provide Flight Radar airline traffic. I only fly VFR GA aircraft, sometimes in IFR as well. FSLTL does not seem to be able to inject GA type aircraft. Do you have a video that would help the FPS problem but not based on airline flying?
Thanks for the video, but it would be really helpful if we knew what your system specs were in the about section so we can kind of give a relative idea what kind of performance we should have based upon our systems. Chas
Traffic models eating up game proformance has been a thing since FS2004, maybe just like having less opponent cars in a racing game will give you more FPS.
Alternative theory: In the low settings, you had bloom on, which in ultra you switched off.. Therefor, the culprit must be bloom!! Just kidding, the ms traffic jamming our systems is a known issue which we all hope will get fixed soon(tm).
I appreciate the info I will try that I get about 30 frame rates right now but I'd like to improve up to 40 I've seen it before like that on different settings but I will keep trying thank you very much
Your CPU won't show max as the SIM is not using all the cores. But some will be maxing out. The random aircraft etc is using the CPU as it's also AI based almost anything the SIM has to path is done by CPU.

Sure they did. They dumbed down FS 2020 to run on a Series X console and ported that code for high end PC users. Simply untrue as you put it because I get over 60FPS without stuttering with everything set to high/ultra so clearly a good PC is better.
FS 2020 is unique in that it requires fast and stable internet. Most PC users have neither. Global average is a mere 50MB/sec. I run 100MB/sec.
On ze ground😂
Got to love the accent. Great vid
Perfect thanks. Your English is better than my German
Thank you very much for this. Going to check it out the next time I play the sim. Seems to make a lot of sense. Also, your English was just fine. Thanks for going through the trouble as well.
LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks, will give it a try. Great English, don't worry! I'm not a native speaker as well, but it was clear and easy for understanding even for me.
That was really interesting. Thank you. I have subscribed to you.
Excellent video and solid methodology to your testing. Thanks for creating and sharing. Your English is fine, keep it up mate.
Thanks for the video and congrats on your new English language channel, I have liked and subscribed, looking forward to your next videos 👍🏼
Really good info. Have to try it. I need some more ram for sure but I bet this will help too.
You did an awesome job of this, well done mate. Keep up the good work. William.
This helped me out so much, thank you for this video..! Everything works well and looks awesome..!!!!
Aaand a thumbs up from me too. Super! I will check that out tonight. Danke vielmals
Gern geschehen, you are welcome. Thx, mate.
Well done really it makes big time difference. Thanks
Awesome tip! Installing FSLTL now!
I think it’s great that Starbucks has finally left the airport gates & took the leap into aviation. Venti, Venti, Venti, hail thou mighty cookie.
ATC: Los Angeles approach
Starbucks: Approach clearance from Angello?
I think the general consensus idea is that if the settings are low then, the hardware should be rendering/computing these lower settings and therefore it should be high fps
Thank you 4 the video and to speak English.Although im Hungarian im still love listening other languages speking English
This has been my trick for running old outdated equipment for generations. An easy fix, but sadly not realistic. Asset reduction. Getting my 20-30 fps however I can and trying to maintain it. But this is a good benchmark test you did and very much better than most. I tell my friend all the time, if you can run JFK at night in a t-storm with some traffic…and get 20-30 fps, you have a good setup if running 2 or 4k.
thanks man! now i can finally fly over new york with my rtx 1660 ti without any lag!
Thanks. I have taken out the traffic from msfs. This has solved all issues I had. I was about to give up with the sim and continue with x plane 11. My interest has been rekindled. Again thank you.
Great work, very well worked out and demonstrated
i'm running a ryzen 5 5600x, 32gigs 3200 ddr4, 2080 gtx. i was able to go from low setting to medium changing from a mechanical hard drive to an ssd drive. i made the change when a friend of mine and i were playing a multiplayer game and i was waiting sometimes over a minute for loading while he was waiting for me just by having his game on an ssd drive
Well done thank you will definitely follow/support
Thx for your comment. I am blown away how different the comments are here compared to the geman youtube community.
Well I'm off to try it. Thanks. I understood every word.
Thanks a lot will try it out...reinstalling MSFS now
Great explanation, thanks for the explanation. I wish you a nice weekend in Miami, Florida I'm on vacation and at home
More powerful will be hard to find. Running a 10900k I9.
It is actually IPC performance. 10900K is definitely not a powerful CPU in these days anymore.
Good job on the video and your English is absolutely fine. I will subscribe to your channel. Have a great day!!!
Thanks for that! was what was slowing my mid range PC thanks again
Nice to hear i could help a little bit. Thats why i make tose vids. Thx for your comment.
There is no question that ground traffic has a big impact.
Thank you for a very informative and nice video. Subscribed 😀
I found this out the hard way. And spent ages messing around with all the settings and then realised my traffic and airport density was on 100% etc.
Wow your video quality is amazing
Many Thanks for this, Much Appreciated😎 !!
thanks for that, will try it out, also your English is awesome!
I think it has to do with the MSFS servers. My cable company throttles the bandwidth to MSFS servers and I get a lot of stuttering and low framerates. If I connect to my VPN and POOF almost all of those issues disappear.
You mean they throttle access to azure ? As that's what mags uses for streaming world data. Damn man I would complain.
@@WnDTech I have set up a one terabyte rolling cache file on a different drive I installed MSFS on. It has largely solved a lot of those issues. When I monitor how much data MSFS is using now it barely is using anything at all.
@@Bellthorian that's crazy, and unrealistic for most people to achieve. I heard that a cache size if 8Gb is all that's required for optimal performance. Glad the 1tb worked for you
Fascinating! I shall try this. Thanks for your hard work. What is the Performance monitor you used?
Its included in MSI Afterburner. You find it there in the Riva Tuner. There are many videos on TH-cam about it.
@@autonormalverbraucher Thank you. Your English is perfectly easy to understand, by the way. Thanks again.
Thanks! I think this may also be true for past flight simulators.
Your English is excellent! Very interesting observations! Must you have the gsx or the other 3rd party traffic program you mentioned from the airbus?
I run with GSXPro and FSLTL
Your English is fine! Keep up the good work.
Great video and very informative. Learnt lots of stuff. My friend bought rtx 4090 yesterday and I tell you what I was impressed the performance was amazing
Not everyone can afford this card but at some point down the line when this card gets cheaper lots of people will buy it and solve their problems once and fora all. The future for flight swimming is great.😊
Flight swimming really is great
Hallo Starbug... interessantes video welchen einfachen fps zähler wendest du an
On Series X in photogrammetry I get 30FPS min. In terrain and in flight etc I get 60FPS @ 4K as well.
Thank you for the video.
Your English is very good. Thank you for the content.
What are all the add-ons you were using in the drop down list ? I know gsx was one of them. Was there 2 more ?
Greatings from France
I always love me a German with a very strong accent like me while talking English 😂❤
Und danke dir für die Tipps.
Nice English and good video with worthwhile tips, thanks
Great video man! Thank you!!
In a normal world, the fps problems of Msfs are just called BAD CODING…
nope
Agreed, or, more precisely, coding originally designed as a single thread and it's then extremely difficult to change to multi-threading .
Bad coding? Man you haven't seen xplane
@@ColinDyckesi dont understand why moder games still prioritize the main thread, like wtf most ppl have 6+ cores
@@matejmarosz20 It's actually very difficult to write a true multi-threaded program of the complexity of MSFS. It runs well over 100 threads and they all need to synchronise with each other with the main thread waiting for them.
Bro changed my life I was about to get a new pc 💀
What takes more fps...real life world traffic or ai traffic set at 100?
Nice video !!!
Haven't tried yet but thank you so much for making videos like this! I am running msfs2020 on a laptop with GTX1660ti. It's just playable but with a really bad gaming experience. Anyways, definitely going to try your way later. Thnaks!
GUYS Its helped me alot setting this video config to ULTRA but the best option which helped me it was changing DX11 to DX12. DX12 its performanced for me now so much better than DX11
This also works on the Xbox, Xbox players need to be made aware of this.
If you look at your cpu individual threads you will se that one of them are at 100%, traffic on the ground are cpu depended, you will also see that in developer mode that you are main tread limited, so your problem are a weak cpu.
Thank you so much! Finally it work fine with your help!
@@Criisko Yes that is why i think the 4000 series RTX is only selling DLSS 3.0 when compared to previous generation GPUs. Thats how they make money, dishonestly!
thank you much for your video and time to educated us.
Super Channel! Dabei bleiben!!! Ganz wichtig!
Imo game is extremely cpu bound. I have a 5950x coupled with a 1080 ti (for now) and can get solid 30+ fps on dx12 at inibuilds lax, fsltl on quite high settings, pmdg 738 and all settings maxed except from terrain shadows and all lens settings off
Hey Declon, thats exactly what i tell the ppl in my graphic settings tutorial ;)
It’s the truth :)
Very helpful. Thank you.
The best I got was 45 to 50 fps so this video did help. But I have to accept there will always be some stutters here and there
Thank you!!! What is the application you have running that is measuring frame rate, CPU, GPU and memory?
No point in having low traffic and ground movements, unless you're running a low-end CPU and GPU. You need a CPU that renders well, and a GPU that does the same. Many people are obsessed with high Frame rate, but 60 to 80FPS is the right FPS to aim for. Set your system up right. Wait until MFS 2024, then you're get problems unless you have a good CPU and GPU. Rendering is KEY to all traffic.
Hello, please be kind and share with us the FPS counter you are using. Thanks
Hey, you find it in the Description. Here is the Tutorial of the FPS Counter: th-cam.com/video/1pHuv8Ndc2Y/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AlexTutorials
Great video. Thank you
Brilliant! Now I can use Ooltra setting again ;-) Danke
HI ,
I like the reduced performance window you use.
what is this software?
Thank you for this video, it is very well done.
However, my question is to do with type of aircraft - I do have FSLTL but I only the the Base Option for VATSIM Model Matching. I did not use the Injector Option because it seems to only provide Flight Radar airline traffic. I only fly VFR GA aircraft, sometimes in IFR as well. FSLTL does not seem to be able to inject GA type aircraft.
Do you have a video that would help the FPS problem but not based on airline flying?
Thanks! Great advise!
Thanks for the video, but it would be really helpful if we knew what your system specs were in the about section so we can kind of give a relative idea what kind of performance we should have based upon our systems.
Chas
Thx for the comment, i wrote the specs into the Description.
Greetings...
In my case here I just turn off live traffic and I had a HUGE FPS improvement.
I appreciate the info I will try that I get about 30 frame rates right now but I'd like to improve up to 40 I've seen it before like that on different settings but I will keep trying thank you very much
what kind of software have you used to see performance over the fs2020 ? thx
If you mean the on screen display, he's using Riva Tuner (comes bundled with MSI afterburner)
I am on a RTX 3060 and i get 40 - 50 fps at EGCC manchester no? its till not amaxing but better
Your CPU won't show max as the SIM is not using all the cores. But some will be maxing out.
The random aircraft etc is using the CPU as it's also AI based almost anything the SIM has to path is done by CPU.
