Object level of detail is only affected by the objects in focus and not what is generally in the area even if it is only 10 metres behind you. You had almost no objects on screen in your first test. So if you had put the airport with its quite big car park in focus the result would have been different and quite an impact on fps would have been seen.
Set everything on high setting then clouds on ultra, tweak some settings depending on if they cpu or gpu bound. The most effect has the Olod and tlod. If you have those settings correct then it's relative good fps on a descent computer. The stutters are the most annoying. Always delete cache (dirextX) and set the nvidia cache to zero and delete the msfs cache if you use it. For me this works. What's left are the mayor bandwith or server lag issues that sometimes a fps drop.
I recently solved a really annoying pause issue with my sim - Windows 11 was doing some sort of audit every 71 seconds on my printer. I timed it, the pause occurred reliably every 71 seconds, and showed up in the FPS counter as a gap in data usually lasting a couple hundred milliseconds. Very annoying. I eventually got down into the system event logs and found this audit event was getting logged when the pause was happening, and it implicated my printer. I simply removed the printer from the system and I haven't had that particular type of pause since. Performance issues like these are maddening to diagnose especially when I don't have access to tools that allow me to watch system calls being made. I guess I got lucky that this pause showed up in the event logs, but man, that pause was making flying pretty challenging (every 71 seconds).
Geez, shows some of us have done enough trouble shooting of windows + fs2020 we could list it as a job role on a resume! I’ll try that next! Thanks for the tip!
Third party aircrafts have always been a big hitter for VR experience. Even while I have purchased most of them, I find myself defaulting to non-study level aircrafts just to be able to enjoy VR experience. Your test with the Fenix is best example of why. That plane is such an FPS hogger, despite them saying they’ve improved it and all. FBW is also the same.
For many people, FPS is not as important as how smooth the app runs. Running smoothly at 30 FPS can be more enjoyable than having a lot of stuttering at 35 FPS and a lot of the graphics tweaking does not really do much with respect to the stutters. I practically eliminated stutters from my system by moving to faster RAM and turning on XMP and selecting an overclock profile in the BIOS. I am not a computer geek, but this was actually super easy to do, and the results were incredible. I can now fly smoothly into the biggest airports with real time traffic enabled. In 5 years of playing MSFS 2020, nothing came even remotely close to giving the improvement I got from over-clocked RAM.
I fly the HS B789, and found GSX Pro and FSLTL AI Traffic put significant hits on FPS. I experience stutters the most when flying near big airport and city mods (e.g., London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Charles de Gaulle Paris). Recently, I found the MSFS 2020 Map Enhancement mod increase load time by at least a double.most
Good video thanks Gavin! Luckily for me FPS is not an issue. What bugs me most is the occasional stutters, which seem to happen regardless of how good your PC spec is, which tells me that that's down to MSFS itself, and how Asobo manage background object loading tasks (e.g. when approaching a detailed airport or city). I really hope that MSFS2024 resolves the stuttering issues! As soon as I see the first stutter in MSFS2024 I think I might cry 😢 🙏 I've not had a single 'game' in my lifetime that stutters, and there's simply no excuse for it happening here either.
5800X3D, DLDSR and switching off the rolling cache got rid of 90% of stutters for me. Sure I still get stutters in complex tubeliners, HUGE airports and heavy traffic... but like you said, I guess that's to be expected....
Yep, there seems to be no way to get rid of the type of stutter you describe. I tend to get the occasional stutter on touch down which happens even on low settings.
Intel I9 13900k 4090 and 64gb ddr5 6600. Settings wise everything maxed TLOD to 100 OLOD to 100 Buildings on High Also if you use Volanta I’d recommend you don’t as it created a lot of freezes and crashes for me. Since stopped using it runs smooth ish now never going to be perfect I’ve also found that if using air traffic and all traffic turning off the tags gave me a bit more fps and stability in high built up airports like KLAX.
I just have problems figuring out what adjustment I need so that straight lines don't look jagged when on an angle. My specs: GPU - AMD RX7700XT (using Adrenaline Edition) CPU - AMD Ryzen 7-7700X Memory - 32GB of DDR6 RAM Mobo - ASRock X670E Pro RS Everything looks great except, I still can't figure out what adjustments I need to have smooth lines. I've played with the sharpening and anti-aliasing to no effect. I know I must be close because so many things look better. It has to be a combo I'm getting wrong somewhere. It's so irritating. Because I know I have the hardware to give me great performance. Regardless of all that, thank you for the video. Every little bit helps! :)
The idea was to keep things the same on a plain part of the world where performance is good so we could change one variable at a time. If we'd have started at a busy airport, the impact may not have been a noticible or easy to quantify.
I think the important thing missed here is pointing out what the bottleneck is. The top right shows either GPU or mainthread. GPU is obviously the GPU holding things back and if it's always showing GPU, no matter what settings then maybe think about upgrading your GPU. If it says mainthread then it's either your CPU OR RAM that's the bottleneck, check you have XMP enabled is a good way to get a boost. Certain settings like Terrain level of detail are VERY CPU heavy, so if it says mainthread you need to lower that or other CPU heavy settings.
It all depends whether someone is GPU VRAM RAM or CPU limited, though LODs will always have the biggest impact. In my experience when it comes to sceneries it very much depends on the devs. PYREEGUE EGNX and most of Drzewiecki Design airports are good examples that you can make a very detailed scenery with decent performance. On the other hand iniBuilds Aerosoft and JustSim don't offer as much detail yet for me the fps often drops below what's playable.
I recently discovered that for me oddly enough it is mostly the photogrammetry that hits. More specifically when it loads in as I get closer. I was on Final at Sarajevo. There was not much air or ground traffic (although cars in the city might have also made an impact) and of course clouds were in the mix, but I was fine until I got close to the airport when my fps grinded to a halt and I struggled to keep the aircraft in the air. Close to touchdown, my frames bounced back to manageable levels so I could at least land ok. I am using AutoFPS to mitigate this a little bit since it used to be even worse.
Honestly the biggest effect on the sim is the rig you're running. My old rig i was always trying to work out and compromise one thing for another. That was with a 30 series Nvidia. Dropped the coin on a new rig just for flight sim and everything is on ultra and smooth as butter. The only bottleneck I hit although very rarely is from cloud loading. Point is if you want ultra graphics and an amazing experience you need to buy a very high end gaming PC. It's worth it and will get you ready for MSFS 2024
I think the stuttering that nobody can do anything about is caused by all the scenery having to be sent to us from the cloud server. It was horrible when I was using vr. Another thing is the scenery ( buildings and trees) often looks like it is melted in a nuclear war. I have seen it click over to perfect scenery and then back to melted scenery inside of 5 seconds, causing me to think that it is from internet speeds and the cloud server.

Don't agree, Gav was showing what impact the settings have, on a very minimal airport to show just how much various settings change the fps. If he had used say Heathrow, then you could not tell so easy if it was the airport or the settings causing the large drop in fps.
it's AI traffic and terrain level of detail. These are the two cpu bottlenecks. If they re-do the engine to better scale the CPU this sim will achieve very high performance because even as it is i get high fps on average

@@Easyjetsimpilot I get your point. But a small dent in performance in an empty scenery could be huge in a busy one.
Hi I am REALLY STRUGGILING with installing gsx profiles I install them and out them in C//USER/MY NAME/APPDATA/ROAMING/VIRTIAULI/ GSX/MSFS/ AND copy the profiles into the folder when i load in to the sim it never shows the profile and and I'm starting to get fed up and when I go to the customize airport it comes up with is says New profile
Ok and restart Create new empty profile and close I press Ok and restart it close and i re open it and press let me choose chose the profile and then save it then restart the sim and its still the default scenery please can i have some help
Fenix is a fps killer. Pmdg is smooth
I get around 350 in New York to 700 FPS .. with smoothest around 240 FPS . Very little LAG 350 FPS, some LAG 450 FPS and lot of drops on 650 700 FPS check my live and lossless FPS SAGA playlist
LOD is main reason for drop
Don't sent this above 150
Object LOD also 150 200 works.
Rest all is almost ULTRA
FG off or on makes no difference
My Laptop GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU

What? 350 fps? Troll.
yesy eys yes finally !
For me Lossless Scaling with AutoFPS was the game changer.
Same with the Lossless :P Save So many games especially MSFS :P
With lossless scaling the recording stops. What could be the reason?
Yea this is not a long term solution. Ghosting and artifacting is a serious issue with this
Same combination here, although I only really turn on Lossless Scaling when I know I'm going to a large airport where I know FPS will take a big hit. I do hope that MSFS incorporates something like AutoFPS, even just options for dynamic TLOD and OLOD would be great.
It's not really a game changer if it doesn't work in VR
FSLTL tanks my performance.
Clouds only looks decent on High. And they KILL fps.
Lewis Christopher Gonzalez Eric Brown John
High density cities along with an add on airport. Anything INI builds really
Actually the problem (unsolved) is stuttering
Hi Gavin. It would be have been better to have used the A320 with a busier airport. I would say most flight simmers airliners
But very interesting
Don't agree, Gav was showing what impact the settings have, on a very minimal airport to show just how much various settings change the fps. If he had used say Heathrow, then you could not tell so easy if it was the airport or the settings causing the large drop in fps.
it's AI traffic and terrain level of detail. These are the two cpu bottlenecks. If they re-do the engine to better scale the CPU this sim will achieve very high performance because even as it is i get high fps on average
Thats for 1080p
You guys just have low end pcs lollllll im always at 60-130 fps with max settings only airport I get below 60 is with KJFK by inibuilds I get 35-50 fps.

You always share the same things. The things I watch have no value anymore. I'm unfollowing.
