I know you may not see this Ed, but I havr a question. Also im so greatful for what you do/promote. I am vegan, i grew up on a cattle ranch, i switched for health and i have studied plant base nutrition, its my career path when i leave the american navy. I find that sometimes the morality animal rights perspective can be harder to show/convince people with. I am wondering is there a reason that the majority of your debates are based on the animal suffering perspective and not as much the health and enviornmental perspective? I do think the animal perspective is very important, my question derives just out of curiousity. Thank you!
Hi Ed, Love what you're doing. did you know that for humans to have milk, cows have to give birth to infants? Most of the male calves must be slaughtered for the farm to maintain economically...
I appreciate you saying that fish pulled out of the water that fast can cause problems to their organs because most people defend catch and release. I think catch and release fishing is even worse than regular fishing. But I didnt know that fact thanks.
Objectively, you are a massive hypocrite. You own a cell phone, laptop, clothes , etc all made in sweatshops using what is akin to slave labor where suicide rates are horrific.
Maybe it’s because we live in a time where no one has any but it’s not that miraculous people I keep seeing people like oh my God it’s all music his patients it’s actually quite average and normal. If people still want to drink this rape milk and support this horrendous industry they should have a damn good reason for it, and that is what Ed is trying to get from them, which he don't by the way. That girl and boy were so frustrating! You can tell they went into that very close minded hense why all she was doing was trying to point out “mistakes” in Ed’s wording (which there never was) instead of listening to the actual debate
I heard a Ted talk a while back about listening to your opponents argument. One thing I will never forget is the women's description of HOW she was hearing them. "I wasn't listening, I was anticipating." Looking for those gotcha moments, being quick to point out flaws, these things are so counterproductive, and leave you missing to substance of the conversation.
It is interesting how we can spot same technique you describe the couple uses within vegans. As a vegan myself I did exactly the same thing of pointing out flaws and not listening to non vegans in the beginning of my journey. Learned a lot about empathy since. It is so great to see how Ed has learned to listen and to accept other people have different live stories that lead them to their believes. He always seems to give others the feeling their opinion is valid in existing and then challenges them to see if that opinion is in line with their other believes or challenges them to see something valuable in trying to change their opinion.

They dont even recognize their children when they meet again about two years later. And may I add that calves get enough to drink and all cows are really content, lazy looking animals that they are and the forced impregnation aint exactly true because they can only be pregnated when they are horny and then they want someone to stuff a semen in them, I could continue correcting this vegan propaganga to you about cows all day long.

(1) How do you get vitamin B12? (2) Why are you allowed to kill all other lifeforms on this planet except a single subgroup you arbitrary define by some anthropomorphise sense of "feeling"s and pain?
active285 (1) there are non dairy milks and such that can be fortified with b12 and nutritional yeast (2) morally if you NEED b12 than you can justify eating a small portion of meat (3) human only need a small about and can store it in their body’s for long periods of time (4) over all we can survive almost 100% on plant based food products
active285 and it’s not that you can kill other life forms, it’s that we aren’t going to ignore the suffering and the tour meant those domesticated animals go through, it’s the same reason we can’t kill humans, because we can sympathize and have empathy for them in the way we do animals, animals have their own experience and consciousness, animals have feeling and morality, I understand not wanting to give up the pleasure that comes with eating meat but the way they treat these animals isn’t okay and it’s our job as humans to be better and better along the way
@@active285 the way we get B12 or at least used to is actually from bacteria. There's a type of bacteria in things like dirt and mud that make B12. In olden days before herbicides and fungicides and before we washed everything so well, we used to eat small trace amounts of dirt which contained bacteria giving us B12. This is how cows used to get it as well. Now with all our chemical use such as herbicides and washing of food before eating it super well those bacteria die and just don't get eaten by us or cows. In conventional factory farming cows and animals are themselves given B12 supplements. So why use the animal as the middle man of a suppliment when I can just take a B12 supplement or eat nutritional yeast as said before.

@@quinnxeni9052 They were annoying because they were not even listening to Ed answer every point they brought up. They kept saying it was a different world view. There is not a different world view when it is measurable with equipment, the physiological effect of emotive response to stress and pain, and to the effects of animal agriculture upon the environment. It is all measurable, quantifiable, and not truly justifiable just as history shows that neo liberalism is not justifiable and has indeed, damaged our society and our planet. (The subject of animal rights and neo liberalism are quite related, actually). There is nothing wrong with being a creationist. And though yes, it was dismissive, and perhaps not the most appropriate reaction, to assume that a creationist is less intelligent than one who is not, it is an understandable position when it is a stereotype due to visible examples and anecdotal examples of creationists also being closed minded, hurtful, and for having views based only upon a dogma rather than introspection or otherwise questioning. It is tiring to come up against that dogma. In my personal experience, with family, it feels like talking to a wall. It once took 3 hours for my mother to finally concede that contraception should be acceptable as a way to avoid pregnancy, because she just kept repeating dogmatic phraseology, wasn't Hearing my words, rather than even having a thoughtful conversation regarding her beliefs. Same here. I think it’s an art lol. I would’ve punched him long ago! That’s why these conversations are best left to the ones who can handle it. I think of myself as more of a behind the scenes activist (supporting them financially, signing petitions, etc)
Don't worry, the more videos you watch and the more information you gain the better you get at these arguments. Not sure if online arguments are effective but I tend to participate in them for the time being (given the pandemic, and "practicing" for real life arguments later on). We will succeed!
It's important to understand the topic very well. Not just understanding your own perspective, but understanding the perspective of those you are talking to. The trick to effective argumentation is understanding the road map between their perspective and yours, so that you can effectively navigate them along that path through discussion. Sometimes people will have strong emotional barriers and will actively resist accepting a particular point or points, which is totally normal, but hard to deal with in the moment. I think that is where arguing is most difficult.

I emailed the guy who set up these guidelines for this at HSA and he wasn't able to provide any evidence either to defend their own words. They claim: "Slaughter can be humane if an animal is protected from avoidable excitement, pain or suffering. To achieve this, the animal must be effectively restrained and then stunned, rendering it insensible to pain, and finally bled rapidly and profusely to ensure death before recovery could occur." This statement is self-contradictory as, the pain is in fact avoidable, by not slaughtering animals.

To be fair, that girl had a perfectly logical and respectful discussion with Ed though. Like Ed has pointed it out in multiple occasions when you are raised in a certain way your brain takes some things for granted and you make some logical leaps like the one you mention. Her reason for 'euthanizing' the animal was because she would no longer be able to feed it (she said so in the end). And that's a perfectly good reason to do it (almost as valid as an incurable disease) BUT (according to Ed's response) the problem is exactly that. The way the dairy industry is setup, this outcome is expected and unavoidable.

@Bartender Plus designed is a charged word, I'm not convinced we were designed. You're also appealing to nature as inherently virtuous as a reason for me to accept your argument that we should be vegan on the grounds that we are built to eat both plants and meat. Nature is not inherently virtuous. Just because we have the ability to eat meat, that doesn't necessitate that we ought to do it. You're deriving an ought from an is. It's fallacious. This isn't good enough, we can live healthy long lives, longer, actually, by switching over to plant based alternatives. But even the health argument isn't enough to morally justify the exploitation, killing and even torture, of animals. Labelling my position as vegan logic does nothing to advance an actual argument and is merely an attempt at ridiculing the position to make it appear weaker than it really is, I suspect, deliberately as a way of easing your own conscience so you can continue to bend over backwards to justify the absolutely abhorrent way we treat animals for the sake of sensory pleasure. Evolutionarily speaking, it made sense that early humans required meat, our developing brains meant we needed a source of high calorie, high protein food to fuel our development. This makes sense in an environment where food is scarce and difficult to obtain. Foraging for plants and berries and nuts provided us with nowhere near the nutrition we required, however in the modern day with supermarkets and mass agriculture, we live in an enormously palatable and hyper calorie dense food market, calories and availability of the nutrition that we require are no longer a problem in developed nations, the issue of malnutrition is still an issue of course, one that we do have the ability to solve, unfortunately, nobody actually wants to solve the issue because nobody is prepared to do what is necessary to solve it, making all kinds of justifications for it. For example, humans produce enough food to feed the entire world numerous times over, but much of this food goes into producing animal feed, which is an inefficient process, given that it takes so much food and water to produce a kilogram of meat. Overall I can't see any reasonable justification for eating meat over plant based alternatives. Health based claims dont hold up to scrutiny, moral claims dont hold up to scrutiny, economic ones. It would be irrational of me to eat meat over plant based alternatives.

active285 and it’s not that you can kill other life forms, it’s that we aren’t going to ignore the suffering and the tour meant those domesticated animals go through, it’s the same reason we can’t kill humans, because we can sympathize and have empathy for them in the way we do animals, animals have their own experience and consciousness, animals have feeling and morality, I understand not wanting to give up the pleasure that comes with eating meat but the way they treat these animals isn’t okay and it’s our job as humans to be better and better along the way
@@active285 the way we get B12 or at least used to is actually from bacteria. There's a type of bacteria in things like dirt and mud that make B12. It is all measurable, quantifiable, and not truly justifiable just as history shows that neo liberalism is not justifiable and has indeed, damaged our society and our planet. The dairy farm girl was nice though. She was actually listening.
She used the word 'euthanize' like her dairy cow had an incurable disease and she put them down out of compassion.

Nice girl*
Thanks for what you are doing for veganism, Ed. You and Joey made me go vegan in June 2018. Best decision of my life.
Vegan über Nacht I also went vegan because of Ed and Joey in July 2018!
@@magicpigeon_ That's incredible! Which specific videos made you go vegan? For me it was Ed's famous speech ("You will never look at your life in the same way again - eye-opening speech") and Joey's "Police interrogation backfires", that got me on track. Before that, an austrian tv documentary about the dairy industry.
Vegan über Nacht I’m not really sure just all of it I guess and I just realized that I agreed with what they were saying and not the other side so I switched to their side you know?

Vegan über Nacht yeah!
It’s honestly funny to hear the sentence “compassionate slaughter”, kind of an oxymoron

@@zain4019 I never said it's impossible to live on a vegan diet but it is way harder and doesn't bring that many benefits. Actually tge only benefit it brings is a false mental security that makes you belive that you do something important.

I’ve thought about that, too. But the sense that what you do is pointless, futile, a drop in the bucket- if we all lived like that, believing our impact is minimal and did nothing to change what was wrong, we would all suffer. But if we all realized the potential and capability for good of our actions, our words, even our thoughts, then what sort of world would we have?
I’d like the second world better. It’s kinder, more compassionate, more brave. And even if I’m the only one making that world a reality, it’s still a better world than where every single human, including me, chooses not to believe in their capacity to change and their capacity for good, and instead wearily accepts defeat without hope of a better world.
