    This is the worst but easiest way to play a modded Daggerfall Unity. I recommend getting the latest versions and modding manually, but this is a 1-click install. I also definitely recommend at least trying Daggerfall and we've made it as easy as possible to get into it. There's a 'getting started' portion in the video that you should watch, then get the game on GOG here: af.gog.com/game/daggerfall_unity_gog_cut?as=1715648857

      To what extent does this change the game mechanics?

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Turin_Inquisitor Hmm fundamentally it's the same, it's just preference changes really. The key difference from the original Daggerfall is that movement and looking around is like a modern game. Combat style is an option, by default it's set to like in Morrowind, click to attack, but on the main menu you can uncheck that box and it goes back to manual swings. There's a mod that elaborates travel mechanics. There's new quests and some new characters.

      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yeah I spent weeks tweaking the settings and preferences for these mods. Have to think a lot about what new players would want compared to what pros would prefer. It's one thing modding for yourself but I had to decide even what the default hotkeys would be. For example, do I make 'E' the interact button like modern games? Pros might hate that but new players would prefer it. I think it's all come together nicely though.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@GamerZakh Thanks for the heads up.
      One reason I stopped progress on the Daggerfall Unity build I have is because I couldn't keep up with the updates to mods and also the fact some I used worked and then they stopped working due to settings and conflicts with other mod updates.
      It is very nice to already have it packaged up like this though. Ill definitely be refering any of my comment section to this video if they have issues with my tutorial.

      This was an amazing game back in the day. I wish I could have experienced this at that time. It wasn't tell 2006 and TES IV Oblivion that drawled me into pc gaming. I was trying to run it on a Dell 2400.....it was a slide show. Then looked into upgrading that system but the options where limited to say the least. So I ended up build my first full custom pc so I could experience the game and I've been building custom rigs ever since. Coming from the original NES with games like Swords and Serpents, and Castlevania II, I was awestruck with Oblivion. It was amazing seeing how far graphics had progressed. Great memories.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@arvindhmani06 Yeah but it gets a lot more complicated because for paid games we can't just put mods on a paid product. It becomes a commercial thing, unless there's a way for GOG to have their own mod manager that integrates with a Nexus collection or something? There are ways to do it legally but it would take a lot more effort and resources which GOG would have to commit. As for this, it felt pretty much like a passion project from some enthusiastic GOG peeps, so we didn't have like the whole company at our disposal or anything like that.

    • @arvindhmani06

    I was always curious about Daggerfall ever since LGR reviewed it a long while back. When I saw the Unity build in Jwlar's retrospective I realise how far ahead of its time it was. But what held me back from the older games was always the min maxing and overwhelming customization options, and my need to "see everything" that it can offer. I can only imagine how mind blowing all of this was back in the 90s.

      I got 2/3rds of the way thru 7 recently, then my fn hard drive failed. Would love to see a 'unity' type of remake of that engine because 6 thru 8 seem to use the same engine. But it isn't as popular as Daggerfall so Idk if one will ever be done. It's still fun to play even the original version. It feels pretty unique in a way in terms of mechanics as games aren't made that way anymore.

    18:58 PS. Depending on the class choices you make before, the questions showed to you changes
    20:50 IMO agility and speed are the most important stats at the start of the game (speed being the most important of the two, the game combat animation speed is unbearable without at least 75pts of speed), followed closely by strenght and intelligency (if you pretend to cast spells in this game, which you should do, considering how insanely usefull spells can be in this game). I recommend joining the mages guild as soon as you find one and go up its ranks till you unlock enchanting item service. Man oh man, you can turn your character into a godlike creature with some enchanting combos. I love how many freedom you have in this game. No bullshit limitations in the name of game balance. Do you want to be Invencible? You can.

    I played Daggerfall Unity with mods last month (first playthrough since the 90s) and was really impressed. The coolest change to me was the view distance combined with the correct topography. Going to the village 1 pixel to the NW of Daggerfall and you could look back and see the entire city of Daggerfall in a valley in the distance. It made the world seem more connected than before.

    Thank you for this. I bought Daggerfall on release day back in 1996 (still have it), and it was my first ever RPG experience. It kicked my butt so bad, and I had no idea what I was doing, so I gave up and shelved it forever...Until now. With your starter tips, I'm about to give it another go. This is exactly the kind of game I want to play. Then again, that's exactly what I said back in '96, but your tips have already given me knowledge I didn't have back then, so I am far more hopeful this time. The new GOG version looks fantastic, and I love to explore, and the atmosphere seems great, so i'm all excited. And who knows? Maybe this will get me to try some other RPGs, which is a genre I swore off after trying this game all those years ago. I have played a few FPS games with some RPG elements, but nothing hardcore since then. Thanks again!

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad I could help! Yeah Daggerfall is way too rough starting out like this. Old RPGs tended to be based on D&D sessions which are like super unforgiving but I think it was forgotten that a lot of that kind of experience relied on having a human Dungeon Master who guided the whole experience. Once you go 'get' Daggerfall, it's a pretty interesting game to explore. Plus, the mods have gotten even better since the GOG release, so if you keep playing you can download more and update the mods you like.

    DFU has received several updates since the GOG Cut was released and it's also the case of several mods that are part of it.
    DFU is now at version 0.14.4 stable and offers several fixes and features that new mods make use of (like Daggerfall Enemy Expansion). thus the GOG Cut is lagging behind.
    Are there are any plans to eventually update the GOG Cut?

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way the GOG cut would be updated is if everyone gives approval, which is a lot of people. The purpose of the GOG cut isn't to be the best or most updated version though, it was to draw the general public's attention to its existence.

    • @cliffworms2990
      @cliffworms2990 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GamerZakh It certainly did its job of drawing the public to Daggerfall Unity's existence back then, but now that so much has been updated, what would be the reason to keep it available if it doesn't have the latest bug fixes for both Daggerfall Unity and the mods contained within the pack so players can get the most stable experience as possible?

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cliffworms2990 You're asking the wrong person haha, that's GOG's decision. I might be able to answer that if I could see their stats. GOG is a business first, so unless it's bad business they'll keep it up I'm guessing.

    I always heard about how in-depth and vast Daggerfall is, but never looked into it, because of how ancient it was (I started TES with Morrowind). Now that I am seeing a somewhat remastered version, it does seem to hold up reasonably well and offer a ton of stuff that would really rock in a more modern RPG. Which of course brings us to that new project of the guys who worked on Daggerfall. "The Wayward Realms", I believe was its name, but yeah, now I have a lot of confidence that they could make one heck of a game today, if this is what they made in the bronze age of gaming. 🤔

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Daggerfall is worth checking out, if you're up for it you should mod it manually as they've been updated since the GOG Cut but you can try it real quick with that. Really original Daggerfall is way rougher than this though, but still pretty amazing they made it in 1996. Can't guess if Wayward Realms will be good or bad, but it'll be really interesting either way.

  • @brightenblack207
    @brightenblack207 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slight correction: completing the main quest isn't impossible if you missed the timed quests. There are multiple paths to go down with different factions. Missing those timers just stops you from completing it with that faction.
    Daggerfall is wonderful to play as a fantasy-life simulator. You can play any type of character you want. Live off thieving, doing deeds for the townfolk, doing services for the people as a member of a knightly order, there's so much. If you want a more hardcore experience that forces you to really get familiar with the game, downloading Travel Options, Basic Roads, Warm Ashes, and Climates and Calories truly lets the game shine.
    Travel Options trades standard fast travel for something closer to an auto-run where you can pick a location then you'll start walking straight to it. You are able to fast-forward and increase the speed that time passes to make it a little less tedious while still giving you a sense of how big the world is. Basic Roads adds roads between cities and villages that are safer to travel on and make it less likely for you to be attacked while fast traveling. Warm Ashes adds a large variety of quests and events you can come across just by traveling to new places. And finally Climates and Calories does what one can guess. If it's cold, you have to wear warmer/more clothing and if it's warm, you have to wear lighter clothing (not too little or you'll start taking sun damage if you're in the desert). You also have to keep track of food (or just stock up on rations) and water. All these combined make you have to be careful while you're out questing. Make sure you have a safe route or are prepared the long journey and have usable equipment for any altercations while traveling recklessly.
    I also like to add Hidden Map Locations so you truly have to discover for yourself what the Iliac Bay has in store for you

      You're free to update things beyond this, it's basically a normal install of Daggerfall Unity so no problem doing that. Can you guys patch that in maybe? That's a really important thing missing as it seems.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is and isn't mandatory is like *really* subjective. This being a prepacked version, it's got to cater to as many people as possible. Even me switching interact to 'E' by default is going to annoy some people and it's important to not remove things for the packed version. Shrinking dungeons might be a good idea but it is cutting down on content, so I don't think it's a good one to have on by default. Having said that, you can mod this version and change settings like any other install of Daggerfall Unity if you want to.

    It's a great game, I spent lots of time playing it and made to quite some levels but tbh I gave up on the main quest and just started my own career and collected items, even a house I think. I've been to beautifully designed palaces and places (remember this was 90s, this was beautiful) and the years later I learned of even some other fascinating locations like very tall mountain etc. - it's impossible to one man visit all those places during his/her life time playing just this game I think! :D
