The WORST: GOG Cut for Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall Unity

  • At the time of release, the GOG CUT was Bad, full stop. By the time you are watching this video, it could be fixed. I love Daggerfall, and I love GOG, but The Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut at the time of release is/was not good and as a result many TH-cam Reviews (TM) (C) (LOL) have been contaminated by bad practices executed as a part of the GOG Cut. This has led to a lot of people believing things about Daggerfall Unity that are simply false.

    With the final version of Daggerfall Unity now coming into Release Candidates (Basically the real, non gog version of Daggerfall Unity is almost 1.0), the Lead Developer of Daggerfall Unity himself has gone on record as denouncing the GOG Cut as a SEVERELY outdated, containing countless bugs and issues that have been fixed, and more importantly, containing mods that, even if they were not outdated (which they are) compromise the original vision of Daggerfall, something Daggerfall Unity attempts to minimize with default settings. Thus, the GoG Cut isn't good for first time players, who should know the difference between the vision for the original game versus modified.

    Thank you for the video. Last September, I tried contacting the GOG representative, who first contacted me in June about the Cut, to ask him if the GOG Cut was going to eventually going to be updated, for both DFU itself and the mods. I never got an answer. My expectations are very, very low here that GOG will suddenly take time and money to update it, since it doesn't bring people to their store like it did back then it got released.
    Save yourselves the frustration and get DFU from Interkarma and select your mods from Nexus. They're easier to install and manage than the other Bethesda titles. ;)

    People forget how important physical media is. You cannot have property rights if you do not have property.

    • @chompythebeast
      @chompythebeast ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Private Property may inherently be theft, but that statement refers to the people who own massive amounts of it while keeping everyone who doesn't at their whims. Digital "licenses" to use products ultimately owned by some megacorp are, in fact, extractive forms of theft. Remember even Hollywood tried to argue that people with VCRs were thieves: They _had to_ make that argument, because the alternative was that _they_ are thieves for trying to rob people of their personal property, aka recorded tapes they legally purchased. In the end the FCC comprimised of course and we're allowed to make personal copies not for profit or distribution, yet somehow video game emulators are still legal gray areas.
      Corporations will use bourgeois law to spin _their_ theft into _our_ theft at every opportunity they get, and since they've bought the politicians who "represent" the people, they get their way 9 times out of 10

      @@bobSeigar The notion that private property is theft comes decades before the Soviet Union, it's there in Proudhon and Marx and Engels from the start. And there is a misconception about what that phrase means which you seem to be operating under, which makes yours a good question. If the means of production and their products are held in common, then you have a common claim to things like bread and cheese and condiments, etc. Now, obviously this could be interpreted in the worst possible way by the (willfully) ignorant: that you have to share _one_ sandwich with _everybody._ Instead, the simpler interpretation is more logical: You're entitled to a sandwich at least as much as the next person is entitled to _another_ sandwich, so long as there are sandwiches to go around.
      So long as we have a system of production that keeps sandwich components in supply, you will be able to eat sandwiches. Likewise, so long as there are vacant homes to occupy, you will have a home. This is, as you know, _extremely_ different from our present capitalist system, wherein in the USA we throw away over 40% of all food brought to market and we have _millions_ of unoccupied homes, yet 1/7 go to bed hungry and hundreds of thousands of people sleep on the streets each night. The fact that this is not only legal but treated as somehow _acceptable_ to such a scale, even within the richest empire in the history of the world, is proof of the violence and thievery that is fundamentally inherent to bourgeois property rights.
      The wealthy who hoard and squander _astronomical_ wealth in relation to their fellow citizens and human beings, in no ambiguous or uncertain terms, _steal_ from the mouths of the cold and starving. That that will no longer be allowed to happen is the grand difference the working class and the human race will appreciate under socialism

    It's nice they put it out, but I find Daggerfall is so involved in the first place with features that the original game with certain tweeks Unity already provide in the menu (namely, click attack, repair magic item and the guild quest list) are more than enough to make it nearly perfect for me. Daggerfall Unity is, in my opinion, the greatest, most significant modding project in the history of CRPGs, as it took a broken classic and made it what it was capable of being. No mods are really necessary to sing it's praises. It's base features are already a miracle of restoration.

    40+ hours into the GOG Cut and not a single crash yet, so your worry about the crashing seems to be unfounded in my case. Also, it was a good way to get introduced to the modding aspect, and I can update or remove the individual mods on the cut as I see fit (I've turned off auto updating for the GOG Cut in case they ever do decide to release an update, as I prefer to be in control.) I've even updated the Unity version just fine with no issues.
    The main reason why I disagree with the general sentiment here, is because I wasn't even aware there was a Unity engine remake until the GOG Cut, and I'm sure it was the same for many people. The GOG Cut is a good thing by the sole reason that it brought awareness to its existence to people. Yeah, they didn't go about it the right way (they should have gotten permission from the mod authors), but I'm grateful that it's there otherwise I never would have known it existed. Now, if people choose to get the regular unity version after trying the GOG Cut, then all the better.

I personally found it strange that they only uploaded a "GOG Cut" of Daggerfall Unity, and not the base game itself as I was interested in comparing (this also certainly would have cleared up confusion for some, as they would have been making a clear distinction that there is a base DFU game.) Unfortunately, the issue lies with people misunderstanding the words "GOG Cut" at the end of it. I always understood it to be a heavily modded version of Daggerfall Unity, but it seems like a lot of people don't understand this going into it. In that regard, your video is very informative in correcting this (though it could have skipped on the clickbait title, as you yourself admitted it has.)

Having DREAM already be installed on it for example can make the game much harder on systems than the game would be without it and, if they're trying to have an easy way for people to jump into an older game, could turn people off of the game who may not know enough about the game to know what is causing problems or may not know how to turn off or remove mods entirely. Ignoring your snark, you are (perhaps unintentionally) correct, Google uses an algorithm to serve up results in an inherently biased way towards the individual user. Duck Duck Go does not have this bias, and Bing uses it's own algorithm different to Google's, so give those a try and you won't get personalized results the same way you do with Google.
      Now, back to the snark. The entire point of the GOG Cut is to pander to those people. Otherwise you'd just link to a vanilla Daggerfall Unity installation and call it a day. If your point is "The Gog Cut shouldn't have existed at all" that's a valid point of view, just not the one I'm going with for the purposes of this discussion.

    Daggerfall is a game that I've seen other people play, but never actually played myself. This video made me give it a try (not GOG's) and maaaaaaaan I really like it! It's a fantasy life sim with a focus on dungeons and player freedom. I can see why some younger dudes might not get it, but it speaks to me on a level that few modern game do. It has a lot of gems and nuances, but *it wants you dead* and doesn't care about you. Compare that to Todd's fantasy of "Become the leader of everything because you are here. Yay well done player!" It's night and day.
    Anyway thanks Zaric, I don't think I ever would have given it a shot without this video, or some of your old clips.

    While I don't agree with all of GOG's mod inclusions, what the release successfully did was convince me to play the game itself. I've since sunk many hours into it (not as much as TES III-V, mind you), and haven't run into many issues that are GOG specific. The extra mods just feel like creation club tbh lol.
    What I was captivated by was the enhanced atmosphere, mostly due to DREAM, some 3D replacers, and lighting. So I feel conflicted hearing about how a large portion of the mod authors didn't approve of the release, and this drama in general. It makes me wonder how people feel about creation club if Skyrim AE was their first TES experience.

    I think mod packs can be good but the implementation is often terrible. A lot of the time when I was playing Minecraft with my friends using mod packs, we often had like no idea what we were doing or what anything was. Things were very weirdly put together and there was basically no useful documentation. There's a joke that my friend made about how now that they have finally added copper to vanilla Minecraft mod authors don't have to add 50,000 different homebrew copper ores.
    Compare this to certain Wabbajack mod packs for Skyrim. FGModlists for instance has well documented and generally quite well explained mod packs for Skyrim and one for Morrowind that makes the game a lot prettier (though it does change styling so not for everyone) as well as coming with the tools to apply community patches. And Wabbajack modlists also download from the actual modding website and can give you an opportunity to actually read what you're putting in, while also giving you the convenience of not having to troubleshoot and configure everything in a 900 mod list lol
    So yeah they can save you a lot of headache if for instance you're way more tentative about spending a lot of time troubleshooting mods (I spent like 90 times more time modding than playing), but a lot of the time they be horribly implemented.

    I'm of the opinion that the general attitude that exists in the DFU modding community where everyone feels like they have absolute control over their mods and can prevent others from making improvements or modding/adding to their own work, has done nothing but stifle the development of the community to the point that now, we have at best, a few QOL and graphics mods and 1 or 2 quest mods and basically nothing else.
    This is only made worse by the fact that it's general policy over there to not include source code with released mods, which with the way DFU modding works only makes it more difficult to actually fix bugs of mods where the author has gone cold, because you can't open mods in Unity without their source code. Making patches so that two mods work together is pretty much non-existent in the community as a result. Since any attempt to go through code and make patches requires you to first get the source from the mod owner, who'll either refuse and tell you to send your code to them so they can incorporate it, or they won't respond because the last time they were on was a year ago, or maybe if you're lucky after a few days you'll get a response. This slows modding to a crawl.
    I get it, they feel like they have the right to demand control over their mod. But here's the thing, they're already messing with something that doesn't belong to them. Modding is a community effort.
    DFU's modding scene will never reach the heights it can with the kind of gatekeeping that goes on there.

    I have the GOG cut, and while I appreciate how easy it is just to just install & run, all the mods in there annoyed me. With Dream, yeah the game looks nicer, but now I notice there are occasional performance hiccups (my PC has parts from 2015...so not sure if the hardware is up to snuff for Dream). Sure, I can upgrade, but something doesn't sit right with me about having to upgrade my PC just to play Daggerfall. I don't play any newer games, so I don't have any new reason to upgrade in general, so why would I upgrade it to play Daggerfall?
    Plus then you have all these other strange mods like the Airship mod. I'm not that familiar with the TES games, but I'm pretty sure airships aren't a part of the Daggerfall experience. Also that crosshair in the GOG cut really annoys me and I must be incredibly dumb since I couldn't find a way to turn it off.
    Sure, the GOG cut mods can be disabled, but there's so much to go through that it becomes overwhelming especially for someone like myself who just wants to play Daggerfall without crashes, with "modern" controls (standard WASD FPS controls), plus other general fixes. I'm afraid of making the GOG cut worse by disabling too many mods, or even potentially breaking the game.
    It seems like they could've done a less-is-more approach with the GOG cut instead of dumping dozens of mods into it. The best solution might be to compile my own barebones cut...and beat those skeletons in Privateer's Hold AGAIN!

    I don't personally think Dream as it is too well because of upscaled textures and some overly detailed ones.
    I see two interesting ways Daggerfall could be improved with the existing models (perhaps with the addition of trees and minutia):
    - Handpainted textures, similar to the handpainted 3D models which look very nice. This would probably lead to a more cartoony/Zelda look.
    - Improved pixel art. Some of the pixel art in the base game is good, but I've seen a few mods that not only add missing art (like reused assets), but improve it. This would be more akin to pixelated Minecraft texture packs, which can change the whole mood of the game without sacrificing visual consistency.
    And like I said before, some simple things like 4-sided plane trees (which there is one mod that implements it) give the game such a big boost in charm that I think one could go about improving it without having to aim for unachievable "photorealistic" graphics.
    Also seeing how there are a few mods coming out for 3D characters gives me hope we can get nice low poly pixelated 3D characters.

    *Edit 2* This statement isn't about the GOG Cut. It's about the concept of modpacks and lists being disliked by the mod develoeprs in general.
    Modpacks/Modlists accelerate the scenes around the game, and incentivize mod creators to create mods that interact well with each other. This is a GOOD thing. Minecraft solved this problem years ago. Skyrim is just now finally understanding this.
    That being sad, Daggerfall is so old and Unity is so stable anyways that I don't think modpacks/lists are necessary right now. The problem with a modpack in Daggerfall Unity is that it's still being updated and each new version can require mods to be updated as well. That's not the case of the other Elder Scrolls titles. I've often seen it mentioned by GOG Cut's curator that players can simply get the Cut and install the latest fixes, but that causes the issue that some of the included mods simply won't work anymore and crash the game as the start or later on while playing.
      When DFU will hit 1.0 and, thus, will stop having changes to its core coding, then I see modpacks as a possibility... as long as they're updated by their curators.

Once you do all that start up unity and go to mods on the bottom left and make sure the mods are activated then hit save and close. That would drive me batty nutso for sure. Im so damn particular about my mod loadouts when it comes to bethesda games. Every little detail really matters. I personally prefer a more vanilla experience *most* of the time. Any mods i get are just additive things, like new clothes, new lore accurate weapons and armor, maybe new locations that are lore accurate and all that. And when i do add things that tread the line, theres a lot of thought put into it. Do i use this, or does it break the feel i want?
    Its why i hate modpacks personally. Theres so many mods in the lists usually that im just personally fine without. And while it may take me a week to fully assemble a working loadout that im happy with, its well worth it.
    So taking the GOG cut and doing what they did with it... My god. If i didnt know for some ungodly reason, or if i just wanted to start somewhere recommended, expecting an 'updated vanilla experience' and then later discovered it was far from it? Oof. Just oof.
    EDIT:
    Also i did want to point out that its not just daggerfall that benefits from a very good and proper mod loadout. And while i know its insenuated, most people never really think it fully through. If youre playing fallout 4, and youre experiencing frequent crashes. Its very likely because of your mod loadout. The same can be said with New Vegas, and Fallout 3, and likely even the other elder scrolls games. Ive been using the same FO4 modbuild for about 3 years now, and in that time, ive crashed maybe 3 or 4 times. (That said, i did hit the VATS bug, and could never fix that. :/)

    @gefehede7783 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only mod you could ever really need for daggerfall is an unofficial patch to fix glitches with quests, etc. Other than that I feel like everything else in the game is perfect, just some quests are completely unplayable and unable to be completed without some kind of guide to tell you ever little thing that can go wrong, so you don't accidentally do anything that locks you out of finishing the quest, most of what can go wrong being glitches. If anyone is thinking about giving daggerfall a try I highly recommend trying it as raw as possible through daggerfall unity, but with no mods except for unofficial patches to fix glitches, it will give you the best experience imo.

    I don't see the point in modding the older elder scrolls games. Daggerfall is, imo, perfect outside of the bugs and ditto with Morrowind. Oblivion and Skyrim need mods to be enjoyable, but this is me, again. This coming from a guy who started with Oblivion, loved it, and went back to the older games.
    To force mods on someone and not only that but repackage them as your own is a big fucking nono.

    Sorry Zaric but I seriously think this is on glue-eating TH-camrs not comprehending the idea of a modded game rather than GoG. They literally include the list of mods they've included on it's GoG page. This all comes across as extremely condescending.

    • @Zhakaron
      @Zhakaron  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is certainly a valid point of view, but it isn't the only one.
      If it were just a handful of stupid TH-camrs, I'd agree with you, but there's a broad section of the user-base that is under the impression that DREAM and Daggerfall Unity are one in the same. This is a frequent problem born from improper expectations. I mean you could just say well everyone who thinks that is stupid (aka normal), well, it's time to design your storefront for stupid (aka normal) people because Daggerfall Unity is being inundated with them. Just talk to the primary Developers and Mod authors who work with Daggerfall Unity and they'll tell you how much of a problem this has been.
      I have to wonder what metaphorical place you are standing that you feel condescended to where as I've been personally thanked by several prominent members of Daggerfall Unity's mod development for this video.

  • @Tucher97
    @Tucher97 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I always liked since Morrowind (Sort of Oblivion but I can understand the exclusion but I think it can still be included) are silver weapons, yes being a Witcher in olden days of Elder scrolls was a possibility but you do not understand the important significant of silver weapons.
    But things will never be as indepth as before morrowind and even to this day when Survival mode for fallout 4 came out and then skyrim that disable fast travel, there is never a dedicated packmule follower like they exist solely to be a pack mule, sure you can make any NPC a packmule but their performance as packmule is questioned, plus I do not want my packmule to fight but my followers don't listen and must fight hte bandit chief on the other side of the cave.

      Yeah, see, that's where things get spicy.
      You didn't call it a 4gb mod, you called it a 4gb patch. Likewise, there are community patches out there for games.
      Normally I wouldn't care about semantics, but if we are going the route that patches = mods, then the developers are just modding their game post-release, too.
      If I need to contest this, then I'll change my phrase to "only the mods designed to optimize the game and remove bugs, like a developer would/should". Altering the gameplay beyond that is never essential, even if the majority prefers a mod over the original.
      The second you change the intended gameplay experience is the second you've gone into subjective territory.

    I think this whole video can boil down to, "It should be called the GOG modpack." The players just need to do 2 seconds of research and realize its a modpack... It's honestly a great starting point. Doing a custom modpacks for yourself requires you to know what the mods do after all. IMO the GOG cut is a modpack that is easy to find and get and it allows you to see many mods without going through every mod and deciding if you want it or not and then making sure it runs well, configuring, and has balance, its a lot of steps. I played OG daggerfall but decided to stop and wait for the unity and now that the time has come gog was offering a easy to install modpack so I am playing the GOG cut.

Also when your OS isn't supported anymore by the launcher, then the offline mode doesn't help, even if you would only need to log in once for it to be useable.
