    ****UPDATE****
    Since adopting Ezra in 2019, a lot of new information has been released about Redemption Paws and how they operate. Although we had a good experience and I am very grateful to have Ezra in our lives, I will say the organization has never once followed up since the adoption. I would strongly advise that you conduct your own research on the organization before proceeding.

      Seriously, at the rate society is going, it should be mandatory to take some “basic training” and pass an exam to get licensed for reproduction.

      Foreal, parents need some sort of therapy available before the decide to reproduce... Not just pop out some kids cuz that's what "society" wants from you 🙃

    I would add #4 - always absolutely RESPECT your dog.
    When they give us a warning growl we need to respect that, because it is dog language for "I'm not liking this, please back off a little".
    It's how dogs communicate with each other as well.
    Many dogs, especially rescues, do not like to be smothered or over cuddled until they have fully developed a relationship with us and learned to trust that we will not hurt them. 💖 😊

      Good advice. The dog I’m adopting is a rescue, but a super-snuggler and very affectionate. He did once give a small growl (closed mouth, no teeth) when his paws were being handled too much (between the toes), and after that he was chill again.

    I've tried to adopt a dog once, but the shelter was hellbent on making it as painful as possible. Why they think anyone is going to pay hundreds of dollars to grovel at their feet, have the privacy of your home invaded, and go through a 6 month trial when you can just get a pup for less time and money is beyond me. When they ask why no one wants to adopt, the answer is in their policy. It's just amazing they can't connect the dots.

    • @anima6035
      @anima6035 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I think the process is like that to prevent time wasters or half assed adopters, if people are willing to go through the process it means they are dedicated to adopting and providing the dog with what it needs. That being said I do agree that it is a bit extreme and probably a lot more dogs could be homed if it wasn't like this. But just think about how many dogs are returned to the shelter even with this rigamarole. It's difficult.

    In the final stages of adopting a nervous dog with a bite history. Basicly adopted as a pup (8weeks)previously and wasn't given a second by the families children, pushed pulled, grabbed even while eating and bit one of them. So fast forward 6 years later of being in the adoption centre.. I show up. She's nervous I'm nervous.. I go to sit down and she growls. Does not put me off... Fast forward again several months of visits.. She is stuck to me like glue and is doing her first sleep over Saturday 😁🐕.. we have some training to do but she has me wrapped around her toe beans already.

    My husband and I rescued a 1-year-old Lab/Staffordshire Terrier mix (68 pounds) in July 2021. Between us we have raised and trained five Lab puppies between us. (Companion dog, gallery greeter and athletic upland bird Retriever.) I "thought" I was well prepared but this was a more challenging experience than even I expected. We bonded within three days but her energy level was MUCH higher than even I expected. My husband and I are age 76 and 71 and now live in a busy condo community. We previously lived on five rural acres and with our previous dogs which I now see made a big difference. Our Ginger Rogers is loving, sweet, cuddly and loyal girl but she is a huge handful in a condo. She is the smartest dog we have ever had but she has a lot of trust issues (fear of men and other dogs.) We walk her 7 to 11 miles per day to burn off her energy level. We thought that being a Lab she would be a bit more laid back but this is not the case at one-year-old. In hindsight she would have been a better choice at our old rural property vs. a dog-friendly condo. This video is very "on the mark."

    This is the best video I have watched about adopting animals, a lot of it applies to adopting cats too. The financial aspect is really important, especially considering pet insurance. It's stressful getting very high vets bills especially if you are on a low income. Good advice about considering the dog's temperament and energy levels, and whether realistically you can walk them three times a day. And also about how it takes time for the bond and the trust to develop.

    Even spaying or neutering the dog you've just adopted from a shelter can open up health issues that the shelter or rescue was unaware of when they first took the dog in.
    Back in 2019 of December me and my family had adopted at the time a 5 month old shepherd mix puppy whom the shelter had named Zander, the shelter that was a few hours away from us, we had already done a meet and greet with the pup before my mom decided to place a hold on him. Fast forward to 2020 and Zander, yes we kept the name that shelter called him, and he's escaping the yard cause he wasn't neutered yet, we had to do it. So the day comes and Zander goes in for his surgery only for us to find out that he has a blood disorder, which means it takes a lot longer then normal for him to stop bleeding if he has to go under the knife.

    in my experience, medium to large dogs, as a rule, don't like to messed with when they're sleeping - just like most creatures, so his annoyance & snapping at you was completely understandable. they also don't like to be hugged/crowded. I had a Chow/Shepherd/Retriever mix - he was a big, fluffy, sharp-toothed, purple-tongued beast who was actually a big baby at heart but would kill, literally, to protect us, lol - I could play with him, pet him, rub him, do all sorts of things ppl do with their dogs - he tolerated a lot of stuff that my kids or I would do to him, lol - but even he would growl if approached the wrong way while sleeping or picked up or "hugged" lol.

    AN HOUR A DAY of direct attention 😂😭😭 Our dog Molly wants CONSTANT attention. An hour a day would be heavenly. We're lucky if she manages to happily play alone for 10 minutes. I take her to the dog park for at least an hour every day to tire her out and she still gets home and wants to play nonstop. And if she gets bored she'll chew on furniture, cushions, get into the recycling bin, bark at the door, etc. And this is a HUGE improvement on when she was a puppy (she's 2 now). I wish she wanted to just sit and watch TV with us sometimes. I'm so jealous of all of you with low-maintenance dogs. We're getting another dog to keep her company and hopefully that will help.
    At least I'm a lot more physically active now than I was before Molly haha

      Honestly, my in-laws got a very energetic puppy 2 years ago that they were unprepared for. I warned them to get a less active dog but they thought they could handle it. Fast-forward 2 years, I mainly take care of her even though I wouldn't have thought I'd be able to handle such a high-maintenance dog before. She's so much work but it's so rewarding. I was very inconsistent with trying to be physically active before but she has motivated me to be way more active now which has been very good for me too. Now I feel so sad whenever she goes to stay with my in-laws. If you're the kind of person who needs somebody to push you to do something, like me, then a dog could be really beneficial for that. But not everybody can handle it, my in-laws couldn't so just try and be realistic. The money is a lot too. It's a tough decision.

    If you adopt a dog can you decide whether you would want them spayed or neutered? Or is it mandatory

    • @pawdoptionguide4752
      @pawdoptionguide4752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's mandatory, most rescues and shelters will have done it already unless the dog is a puppy and not of age yet. Rescues and shelters are in the business of dog population control so that's why it's necessary.

Eventually he bit off her lip..... she had to get face reconstruction surgery and the dog had to be euthanized. She now has a new rescue. 💀

    I have been there and heard the best known pro dog trainer say it: ' Get the best dog you can get ' in a shelter or from a rescue group... I went through dog training classes right through CGC and even rehab of a male APBT that was from near the Michael Vick group. Common sense is GET a Pro to find you a dog and adopt it and give them some money ($20-40 is plenty) for their expertise! Go to professional trainer classes and don't lie and bluff... you are NOT a dog handler pro...

    This video is from 2 yrs ago so i don't know if i would get a response.
    My gf is in India and India has huge stray dog population. Some states even burn stray dogs alive. Se states recently have banned people from feeding stray dogs and cats.
    Their governments find it a pain to neuter strays so the only choices are adoption, citizens getting dogs spayed or neutered or the government taking the stray dogs and killing them en mass.
    My gf feeds stray dogs right in front of her house. There are 3 puppies 36 days old. She is financially comfortable in taking in 1.
    Can you please advice how she can while the mother dog is still there, whom my gf feeds every day and night?
    The mother lost 5/6 of her puppies previously when my gf wasn't in the same city.
    She's in double mind that the puppies need the mother for a while longer, but the stray situation is so bad that there are dogs attacking other puppies that have died.
    She's found an adoption drive where she can take the rest of the 2 pups, but she wants to save 1 herself.

    If you rehomed an dog you shouldn't be giving advice about about adopting dogs. Dogs are a life long commitment.

    • @mejulialee
      @mejulialee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I personally did not rehome a dog, if you watched and understood the video you would know that I was 8 years old at the time. A child does not rehome a dog.
      Sometimes rehoming a dog is the best decision - no situation is black and white. You should not keep your dog at all costs if you cannot provide all that a dog requires. If you are no longer in a place where you can fully support the dog and give it the best life possible without sacrificing your own well-being or financial situation, then rehoming can be the best option for the dog to live a happy and fulfilled life. There are many unforeseen events that occur in life that can change peoples' circumstances and cause them to be unable to properly care for their dog. The purpose of this video is to help prepare folks who have never owned a dog before - so that they can understand the full responsibility of having a dog and make an well informed decision on whether that is something they can commit to for the lifetime of a dog.
      If you are unable to show compassion to humans who need to make the right decision for themselves and their dog, then you shouldn't be leaving a comment on a video that is educating folks on understanding the lifelong commitment so they can avoid rehoming a dog as much as is within their control.
