  • Hey guys, I was taking a look at my videos and I began to feel like I have only highlighted the good/fun stuff of owning a dog without discussing what it's really like getting a puppy. After all, It's not all sunshine and rainbows, there are days I'm scrubbing dog doo-doo off of my floor. So, I decided to make a video of 5 things you NEED to know before getting a puppy. I guess you can call this the less than glamorous, behind-the-scenes part of dog ownership; basically, everything I do in taking care of dog If you are considering getting a puppy you must watch this to be prepared for a new puppy. Also, if you know someone who wants to get a puppy this is a MUST share. I hope you like it =]

      Doctor Mike thank you for helping people understand the work that goes behind being a responsible pet parent. We help with rescue and it is sad how many pets are abandoned because the people didn’t realize how much work it would be.

      Yes, and it's important to realize that a dog lives for quite a few years, which equals a long-term commitment. Like marriage, looking for the right dog with the right level of energy is important. If one doesn't want a child, one should probably pass on getting a dog, unless an older, low-energy breed would suit you.

    Owning a puppy made me so much happier, I was very depressed, and she made me have to exercise, sleep, cuddle and meet new people. Owning a dog changed my life, which sounds stupid, but it really did.

      Not stupid at all!!!! Same with me! I love my giant fuzz ball! He brings my mood up and helps me with stress. I went through some of the worst things in my life with my fur baby. My dog is only 2 years old & in a span of the almost 2 yrs.we've had him, I went through 5 major family deaths, losing our home to severe medical debt that hit us when my husband needed 3 major emergency surgeries in a span of an 8 month period (had to move back in with my parents), I ended up in & out of the hospital because I have so many medical problems, & so much more. I have no idea what I'd do without my Simba. ❤ owning a dog changed my life too. I had never had a pet, ever. Wasn't ever allowed to. Having him now, is such a joy. I definitely understand the initial puppy depression & how much work it is because I didn't expect him to destroy so many things initially. However, it's still worth it. 🤗😍❤

    My dog died a few months ago and I have to say that it's true that dogs contribute to your mental health. Ever since she died, I've been suffering with depressive episodes and I find myself a lot more sadder. She definitely made me a lot happier and even though I obviously aren't going to get a dog straight away, I'm hoping to rescue a dog or two in a few years.

      When I lost my Shiba, Faust, to cancer 6 years ago it wasn't just hard for me. My rescued pitbull, Betsy, was devastated. I wasn't prepared for how much this affected her. 😢 I had to make adjustments so that she was with someone 24/7.
      6 months later, I adopted another rescue. A 6 week old pit/great Dane mix that I named Kakoe. That was almost 7yrs ago and they are so happy together!
      Please, no hate for how young she was. Her mother had died from neglect and Betsy became her surrogate mother.

    This was the video that made me subscribe. Having a puppy (or a kitten!) is a HUGE commitment. They depend on you for every little thing, and you have to be there for them. My sister worked at a shelter for years, and at least once a week she would come home crying over an animal who had been abandoned by people who didn't understand this. There's more to owning a pet than cuteness and cuddles. Thank you, Dr. Mike, for the honesty and the instructions. Well done!👍😀

    Also on the subject of walking puppies, your puppy shouln't be socializing with other dogs outside until it's fully vaccinated.

    • @julepiastowski6162
      @julepiastowski6162 4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Dogs generally don't want or should meet a lot of different dogs. If they meet the other dog at least once a week it's okay, but generally it causes behavioural issues.
      When dogs "greet" each other they check if the other is dangerous to their owner.
      When dogs "play" they figure out how strong the other is and if they need to protect their human. An exception are siblings and dogs that live in the same family.
      If dogs are allowed or even encouraged to "greet" each other while on a leash, they tend to become insecure, which is a major cause for agression.
      Of course not every dog is like that, but a vasy majority of dogs behave like that.
      But yes, they should genetally be vaccinated. That's always a good idea.

    I work at a dog daycare, and there's one thing I'd like to add.
    YOU WILL NEED TO TRAIN YOUR DOG. It sounds obvious, but we have so many owners who think that their dog will just magically become behaved as it grows up. That's not how it is. If you want your dog to stop jumping, if you want your dog to respond to its name, if you want your dog to listen to you, you have to put the time in. I don't know why people think their dog will just grow up and listen perfectly, and then they get upset and blame the dog when it's 3 years old and still jumping on everyone and destroying the house. That's not how it works. You need to put the time in to teach them.

    • @Hi-id4zb
      @Hi-id4zb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      TheSkyHazCloudz Really that must be bad how do you and the other workers there deal with it? Does it affect the other dogs there? since I’m assuming they didn’t bother with basic socialization. Do you keep it real with the owners and tell them how it is?

    • @marckealhofer1769
      @marckealhofer1769 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My dog was abandoned at the city shelter at 4yo by his first family (who had had him since he was a puppy) for being poorly trained and badly socialized to dogs and humans. I’ve had him 3 years and we’ve made some progress, but some things are still really rough, especially leash walking and dog reactivity. We’ll probably be working for the rest of his life to undo the damage. He’s still a great little buddy to me, but he’s definitely not an easy dog, and a lot of it could have been avoided with proper socialization when he was a puppy.

    • @TheSkyHazCloudz
      @TheSkyHazCloudz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Hi-id4zb Sorry, I never saw this somehow. Yes, we are honest with them about their dog's behavior, but usually they are in denial and will fight with us about it (even if what we say to them is exactly what they said to us during their dog's evaluation when asked about behavioral concerns). We don't put dogs who can't handle socialization in social situations, but sometimes the owners will fight us on that, too.

So we are planning on get him trained at petsmart.

      This cannot be emphasized enough.
      My grandma has five dogs that she never bothered training. One of them being a terrier (though I don't remember what kind) that was particularly fiery. A few years ago he started a fight with my cocker spaniel. He ended up with a missing tooth, my dog ended up with a torn eye, and the whole thing was completely avoidable.

They just need to understand there is another side to owning a puppy too and be prepared. You have a Husky and a Newfie so you understand the hair issue. Lol! 🤣 I have 2 huskies (plus 2 Catahoulas) and everything I own is covered in husky hair. I explain they’re like PigPen from Snoopy except instead of a dirt cloud, it’s husky hair. Yes!! As an assistance dog trainer, Animal assisted interventions specialist and psychologist I can say that this is so important for families with a member with disability. So many families turn to me for help because someone told them to get a pup and now they have a huge problem at their homes because they did not know/didn't research what to expect and what it would mean. I truly believe that a pup/dog can bring so much to these families, but it's important to think and make informed decisions (specially involving an Animal). Thanks for this video

      Ikr! Many people just get a dog because it's cute and not because of it's personality. Or these parents who get a dog for their kids as a present for christmas. It's really irresponsible and many of those dogs cause problems since they aren't treated right. People that get a dog just to cuddle it and walk it for like 15 mins daily truly disgusts me. Many of those dogs land in shelters and it's just so sad to see those poor animals suffer because their owners didn't do enough research.

That's what everybody should do before getting a breed they want, and keep in mind there's still might be surprises. The dryer thing: If you going to use the hairdryer do it on the cold setting. True, but not all dogs like crates or have that inate den drive. My 2 fucking despise being contained, we tried EVERYTHING from 8wks old. They both just got anxiety to the point of screaming and ripping their own skin off! The second we let them out, they ran over, made a special space of their own and stay there without the need for a crate. They are also 100% safe in the house while we're not home. Doggy doors are a thing for ppl with houses and its a part of being a responsible pet owner to "baby proof" your house and yard. Its not hard, and cages aren't necesary for a happy healthy dog.

    Love your newfie videos with Bear! I've got a Newfie service dog, myself. The drool struggle is real (so are the vet visit struggles - I gotta keep my doggo in tip top shape as long as possible - he's almost 7 now and starting to show his age so he can't work as much and he's getting sick and injured more often from routine things that he just can't handle as much anymore even though he wants to do them... it's sooo expensive. I just had to spend over $300 for an emergency vet visit for a bad ear infection which I had to try to treat it myself and wait until it got bad enough for an emergency visit due to the vet only doing essential services and no regular visits due to the pandemic.)

    Puppy depression is something I had and was not aware that such thing even existed! 2 weeks later I got used to Cooper, he got used to me and we had the best time ever till his last day. I always recommend for beginners to host a dog (for instance, from shelter) for a week, 2 weeks, month or so. You give them love and attention they so desparately need and as a bonus, you get an understanding what it is to have a dog 🐶

    I’d recommend getting a dog from the pound. I got my current dog from the pound when he was about 3. He’s the most loyal dog I’ve ever owned and my best friend. He loves to fish, hunt for lizards, roaches rats and mice. He also catches flies. If you have a toddler who throws food on the ground, dogs are perfect. My wife appreciates that a lot. Save a life, your dog will love you more and you will love yourself more.

    Heya Dr. Mike!!!
    YES YES YES!!! I worked in the vet field before becoming disabled, & if there was one thing I could make clients always do before getting a pup is RESEARCH!!! So many people choose a breed that looks good to them, without considering energy levels, how hard it is to train the breed, how the breed typically interacts with children or other pets, or health risks that come with that breed... For example, bulldogs are cute, but they come with a huge risk of health issues throughout their life... Also, finances are a another good point that you brought up... Typically, we see owners put together the money to get the pet, but not leave any left over for care after the purchase... Especially if they're buying from a breeder (which I usually discourage, but that's a personal thing)... If you're getting a pet from a breeder, they won't be spayed/neutered, vaccinated (sometimes), microchipped, etc. & all of those things add up, so one piece of advice that I've heard that's great, is set aside puppy funds of about $1,500 before you get the pet & put a certain amount away every month after you get the pet... This can help with both expected & unexpected costs!!! Thank you, again, Dr. Mike, for bringing this up, it's such an important topic for people to understand!!!

      I overheard a conversation in a pet store between a mother and daughter and the owner of the shop. They told him that they were picking up a kitten later that day from a breeder and asked what they would need. The shop owner told them about the need for medication to prevent fleas, ticks and worms. But after hearing the price of these medications, the woman said she wasn't going to do that, because it was too expensive. The shop owner again explained why this is so important, not just for the health of the cat but also for the humans they interact with, but she still refused.
      If you don't have the money (or don't want to spend the money) needed to give an animal the care it needs, you really shouldn't own a pet.

    I don’t necessarily agree with the exercise bits. When they’re young their bodies are still fragile and growing. It can actually hurt your dog if you give more exercise than advised given whatever age they are. After (for big dogs, less for small dogs) about 2 yrs they should be good to go for as much as can be given :)

    • @theistorm807

      I think that when he says walks every few hours he's meaning more for toileting purposes? I have a fully fenced garden, so my dog doesn't need walks to pee/poop, but if you don't have a safe garden then that's why the regular 'walks' are needed.

It's unfortunate that so many people believe that living with animals is all fun and games and then want to return them when they see how real it is. I have 4 cats and I personally feel that anything I have to deal with is worth what I get from having them in my life, and admittedly, I think I get more from having them than they do from me. Like the part where you are sitting on the sofa with both of their heads in your lap. PRICELESS! I love when my cats come and pile on or around me. Hugs to you in England Serina! I hope you enjoyed my little bear pup! Anything in particular you haven't seen on the channel but are curious about?

      Doctor Mike Aww hugs back Dr Mike!
      Yeah I really did enjoy seeing him (and you of course !) 🤗
      I think your channel is amazing and basically perfection! However, in addition to your genuinely fantastic content, you could talk more about mental health GAD(Anxiety) in particular with coping mechanisms and tips on how to stop procrastinating (I'm procrastinating right now!)
      P.S. You obviously know that these are two separate videos...
      🙈😭👌💖👀

    I have a labrador and it was the best gift ever made to myself. I walk him nomatter the weather, we play inside and outside, we go to the park everyday. It is a commitment and you have to be ready for everything that may come up health wise.

    new to your channel and thank you for this psa. i have been adopted by a parrot 11 years ago and can't tell you how many times i've heard people say they are going to get a parrot because they have heard mine say funny things. don't get me wrong my guy cracks me up every day but the level of commitment to maintain that for the long run is always under estimated. my best advise: rent a pet. find someone who has what you think you are looking for and rent them for a week or so. thank you so much for your videos

    Hi Doctor Mike!!! 🤗 Bear is sooo handsome... I think he gets it from you! 🤣 I currently have a 10 week old German Shepard mix named Myles he came from the hurricane in Houston and traveled all of the miles to get here.... so I named him Myles. You are so right about vet bills currently he is dealing with a terrible stomach virus and all together I’ve spent over 400 bucks on treatments and medicines and probiotics and chicken and rice for his bland diet.. He definitely is a handful but I am indeed in love. He has helped me with debilitating depression.. he makes me go outside with him, play with him which makes me laugh and smile so he is quit the blessing(except for when he bites).. and not to mention the 20 second cuddling session is indeed my favorite part of the day. 😍❤️ hope your well Doctor Mike, love your videos! ❤️💖

    I own a Newfie and he is 4. We definitely researched not only cost but also focused on researching temperament as I needed a dog that was chill since I struggle with Fibromyalgia and Lyme disease and one of our daughters is autistic. Sure he drools, the cost of caring for him is a lot, and there is always hair EVERYWHERE, but Chewy is the best furball EVER!

    Adopting a stray dog has changed my life completely. He has taught me how to be kind. He has taught me the real meaning of friendship.

    I could never live without my pups. From my childhood, I have loved pups (yes, even for the first few years of my life when I was so afraid of dogs I called my father to pick me up from my bed and take me outside cause our literal pup was in my room), but I know what a huge commitment they can be. They are like kids who grow up fast but also really slow.

    As a 32 year old male I’ve did college and graduate school. I’m an educator, I have commitments and stuff...and I still don’t feel like I’m prepared for a dog. Animals in general are such a huge HUGE responsibility that I can’t even phantom having to care for one alone. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Great topic and great video. #WeNeedMoreDrMikeInRunningPants

    Good summary. I like the "Puppy Depression", especially with small kids that could be a watch out. The cost part is also very interesting. I recently processed a study that showed annual cost of a dog could range between 1500 and 3000$ per year. Cost should always be considered in the decision. Also the insurance is very important, breed specific diseases are often not covered in the standard policy. This could lead to drastic surprises as well. Overall my dog is worth every cent but it also is important to keep the other factors in mind. 🙂

    Another tip - to make the crate more "den-like" cover the top, back, and ONE side of the crate with a blanket.
