That didn’t work for my dog. None of that worked for my dog. I had to correct her for barking and then reward her for being quiet. Every time she was quiet, I rewarded her. That seemed to do the trick.

You gotta keep in mind every dog of different .. so what works for one dog may not work for the other you gotta try different methods until you find the right method that works for your dog
I highly recommend doing crate training with all dogs until they are potty trained and comfortable, then you can leave the door open. Rescue dogs are used to being kept inside of cages, so it feels odd to them to be loose in such a large environment. It makes them feel a bit more content if they are in a crate, it's what they have been used to, and it makes them feel like home. I HIGHLY recommend putting kong toys in with them. They have off brand kong toys that can also be stuffed with food, I recommend having multiple in there at night time, as well as some in the freezer with food in them, so if they start whining at night, you can switch them out. It's also great to use snuffle mats and puzzles. I just turned 18 and I'm preparing for college so I do not have a job yet, I'm adopting another rescue dog soon and I've always stayed up with them all night in the living room. I always play some stuff to watch on the TV, turn the lights off, turn on a dim lamp and chill with the doggo and a blanket. I give them some chew treats and kong toys to wear them out mentally, and I cuddle with them. Then we usually fall asleep. I've had 4 rescue dogs and I did that for about 3 days with them, I also introduced them to the crate during the day. I fed them in the crate, gave them chew treats and toys in the crate, lured them into the crate and rewarded them with lots of treats with the door open. Then I started closing the door for a few seconds, then opening it up and giving them lots of treats and praise. The I slowly increased the time the door was closed. Then I left the room while they were in the crate with the door closed. After about a week, I was able to keep them in the crate all night. After crate training and potty training them without any accidents for at least 3 months, then I started to leave the door open so they could sleep with me if they wanted too. Thankfully all of my dogs slept with me most of the night instead of sleeping in the crate, I love sleeping with my dogs and cats. They keep me warm and I love petting them! Sadly, two of my rescue dogs were larger than me and I only have a twin sized bed so I had to sleep in their crate or bed sometimes... I didn't mind though, crates are comfy as hell, I might have to get myself one LMAO. Also, take your dog to group training lessons! Also, please do not spray your dog in the face or yell at them, it will make their anxiety a LOT worse. Instead, make kissy noises and reward your dog as soon as they look at you. When they start again, make kissy noises again and give them more treats. It is called "engage and disengage". As soon as your dog is distracted by something or is doing something you don't want, get their attention back on you and give them treats. It will not cause your dog to have anxiety or fear issues, instead, your dog will learn to look at you instead of barking or pulling at another dog or if they see food on the ground. I've done this with both of my service dogs and it has been AMAZING! Always use positive reinforcement, never hit your dog, never yell at your dog, never spray your dog, never use shock collars, never use whistles, never spray your dog or do anything to harm them. Instead, train your dog and use positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement works on all dogs, especially fearful rescue dogs. It is like a happy game to the dog and they enjoy it. All training should be fun! You should never scare your dog or inflict pain on them, physical or mental. If you yell or spank your dog or use any other abusive and harmful method, it will make things worse. Your dog will learn that you are a scary person and they won't listen to you AT ALL because they think you will hit them.
The very best dog I have ever had. His name was Prince. My first (and only) greyhound to this point. He got me thru some hard times. After going thru a divorce and then just diving into my work, I had to let Him go as I was working 70 hours a week and the guilt of leaving Him alone was killing me. The thought of having to give Him away crushed me, but I had to. I found Him a new home, on a farm, with two other Greyhounds. He lived the last two years of His life there. And He was happy. It was the greatest gift I could have given Him. He was my best friend. Just get a damn Greyhound wouldja? It will be the best decision you will ever make.
I have had two greyhounds. Maximillion passed away the last day of 2012 and Winstin passed away 5 weeks ago. Yes they were a great deal of work just like anything else that turns out to be the most wonderful thing ever. I am still crying over Maxi for 7.5 years and now I am in tears over Winstin. Greyhounds can be very demanding and at times they can be a real head ache to deal with. I wish that my greyhounds were still with me creating all kinds of distractions. They are both waiting for me in heaven, something that will pass for them in a split second, however for me it will be an eternity. So to ease my sorrow and broken heart I will adopt another greyhound maybe two. Hopefully there will never be a dull moment because without their whining and barking and other antics my life sucks

I was going out with her every 2 hours. I was told that the first time she poops out side I should give her praise and treats, but for 5 days I never had an opportunity to do that because she wouldn't poop outside. After one walk, she pooped 30 seconds after getting into the car. It was like she was holding it in until she got in the car. It was winter when I got her, so it's not like I could stay outside all day, or I would have done that. I had plastic tarps laid out on the floor. On the 5th night, I lay in bed thinking if she didn't start pooping outdoors, I was going to bring her back to the SPCA that day, but then she pooped outside! I gave her lots of praise and some treats, and that was it. After that she pooped outside all the time. It can be such a challenge adopting a dog. I was a first time dog owner and living in an apartment as well. Fortunately, she didn't bark or whimper at night.
I was a dog control officer for 7 years, and the main complaint was barking dogs. I’ve recommended the coffee can coin technique often, because it worked on my dogs, and fast-like once or twice! When I mentioned it on a FB page, I was “booed” off for being abusive...! None of my dogs seemed the least bit traumatized, and my neighbors and passerbys deserve the peace. They’ll bark at strangers, which works for me. Good video!👌🏻

I rescued an 18 month old Pointer cross about 3 weeks ago. During the day he is quite lively, and barks a bit at the window, but he is very friendly and good natured. In the evenings however he just settles down next to me on the sofa, then when I go to bed, he goes to his own bed and sleeps all night. He has done this since the very first day I collected him!
Go to dog training. I can not stress this enough. To use the wrong tools on your dog can make them aggressive or even more anxious. Watch dog behavior seminars by professionals online.
You are very smart and got some good advice. So many new dog owners think ANY CORRECTION is abuse so many dogs are so mixed up, rule the roost and eventually get agression then the owners get rid of them. Dogs like children need correction.
Dogs do understand "command voice" but you really have to mean it, because they know if you are not sure. I raised a husky girl from the time she was 5.5 months old, and retired racing greyhounds are so much easier. They still sass you but not nearly on the level of a husky! Our grey boy is such a sweetie.

I used the can when teaching my dog not get on our couches (because she sheds so much) and it works instantly. Just throw the can with rocks or coins in it at them when you don't want them to do something and it works like magic.
I have 2 Romanie rescues . I did not drive 3 hours . I travelled for 4 DAYS through the EU with my dogs and another 13 dogs. These are rescue dogs that have went through horrendous conditions. This is not about you . The fact is you should not have a dog . Screaming at a rescue or abusing tgem with sprays just won't work. I have rescued over 450 dogs you should not be allowed anywhere near a dog.
The water spray and the can of coins ( a plastic bottle with stones can be used as well) are very common tools in dog schools, when dogs are about to get dominant around each other and won't react to firm voice. You can use it to throw also if your dog is eating something from the ground outside.

In one of your videos, you said how you don’t do dogs sleeping in the bed - in your household! I died! 🛏️ 💀 😂😂 I agree and have learned not to do that with my future dog. I let my old dog sleep in my bed; because we made the mistake of letting him on the bed all the time. So he wouldn’t sleep anywhere else the most of the night! However, trust and believe, his lil butt was allowed to sleep at the foot of our bed only. I wasn’t about to explicitly breathe in dog hair all night 😂😂
My first one was named Daphne. She was a small red brindle and a very girly dog. She was the light of my life. Lost her in 2008 and have missed her terribly. Did have several fosters and took in a super spook as a foster a few months later. Diva was with me until 2012 when I lost my home. She was removed with a family who had 2 other hounds and it was the best situation for her. And the wife of the couple who adopted her is a stay at home, which I wasnt.
What do you expect. they have never been in a house . Rescue dogs need time to adjust. MY greyhund couldn't climb stairs, afraid of tile floors, aren't potty trained. The Rescue said never to yell at them but to use redirecting, be firm, use rewards, and crate them. Gas or Diarrhea is common with the greyhounds when they are stressed especially from going from racedogs to a pet. First night's are tough with any new dog. It's a wonderful breed it's well worth it!!! ❤
The tissue paper skin has nothing to do with their feet. It's that if they get a cut on their side their skin can rip like a balloon when it pops. It'll freak out when you first see it but it just gets sewed up. It's a common occurance if you have been around enough of them.
We're getting our adopted dog in 7 days! I'm excited and a bit nervous. It will be our first family dog. I'm taking notes. I'll have your method as a backup. Crossing my fingers we don't have to use it.
To an extent this depends on the age of the dog/ I got a 10 week pup English Staffie. I ended up sleeping on the sofa with the pup snuggled between my arm and my body. Silence after about 10 seconds.
😲 👉 Daphne's face when her mom pulled out that water bottle like it was a magic wand! 🤣 She knows THAT thing! Also, absolutely agree- and it's not just Greyhounds. I have a Chihuahua/terrier little asshole son, Snoop 🐶! He enjoys ppl's reactions when he's trying to be Alpha dog, which eggs him on! One day while talking with my neighbor, Snoop tried to be intimidating and my neighbor stood there and looked him in the eye, pointer finger 👆 and stern NO! Snoop stood down and immediately submissive! It's a beautiful thing to look back to then and now! Also, I am going to tell everyone to call it your best dog mom voice! 🤣🙌🦴💙🐾

I think both discipline and positive reinforcement is necessary - and particularly when your dog is under major panic/anxiety like mine was - treats and praise don’t work. "Star" (her racing name Star Angel 🌟) would go to the back door. Stand straight up and pose, eyes locked on the yard. We would just pause and quickly push open the door... Phhhhhheeeewwwww! 💨She literally took off like a true racer and proceeded to do complete circular laps around the pool and gazebo! I was expecting her to wipe out or miss a turn but not Star! Hilarious like you can take her out of the track but you can't take the track out of her! 😍🐶

Oh, Jenny, some of them never get over the farting. I had a foster I couldn't keep. Puked my guts up. Truly awful. That said, try feeding a tablespoon or two of plain yogurt. It was helpful to learn. Less stinky, too. Glad it seems to be working for you ladies. They are the sweetest dogs. I miss mine terribly, but my place is small an in a busy downtown area.
I just got a 2 month old blue Doberman husky mix less than 6 hours ago and she’s so sad and gassy 😭 i love her so much but trying to comfort her is so hard
I've seen videos about giving dogs some yogurt to help with the gas. You might want to talk to your vet about if this would be a good idea or not. I'm assuming that you have had your puppy check and treated (if necessary) for worms, as intestinal parasites can cause these symptoms.
The spray bottle is the best dog training tool you will ever own. When I got Daph the group I adopted from was very social and we were assigned an adoption buddy to ask questions and get help.
Dear Jenny, I'm a new mom of a 3 mos old greyhound. He has totally hated his crate and done the whining and screaming his first few nights unless I let him sleep with me. I must be more disciplined. Thanks! I say no in a dark voice but I've got to try the water spray!!! Daphne is beautiful. I hope my Lightning calms down at night , too. My baby is a sweetheart most of the day!

I haven’t watched your previous videos - sorry if I missed something. What are you feeding her? Food has an effect on your dogs behavior. I feed mine raw. Helps with gas and stool volume. She chewed on herself while you filmed this video. She appears anxious. Stay away from commercial foods. You are such a good mom! The coin can, command voice and water spray is brilliant. We use them. Hang in there. ❤️🐕
I tried the spray in the face bit with my sheltie puppie. All it did was make her mad..and bark more. I used to be a substitute teacher. Many of the students thought i was retired military because I could shout orders to get a new group of students under control..so no problem there but this sheltie could care less. The noisy toy to her was just a ramped up play ti me as far as she was concerned. Sometimes treats sometimes work ..the only thing that works with her is to put her in her crate tent ,holler NO and cover the crate door and leave the room. Aaarrrrggggh,!!!!!!
yes we had stairs in the 2nd and 3rd apartments - she isn't a huge fan but she eventually was fine with it. In our 2 story townhouse at the moment she lives on the 1st floor and will only come upstairs when there are fireworks
My first night I spend on the sofa with her because he was too scared to go upstairs ... once the steps where overcome I had a greyhound in my bed ... pushing me out 🤣🤣🤣 With time he became more independant and slept on his sofa diwnstairs or on his bed upstairs.

Newly adopted dog is ruining my life! I recently lost my beloved Dog Sparky, who was part of my life for almost 17y. His passing broke my heart, he was my best friend, always on my side. My house felt lonely and I miss the company having a dog on my side to care for. So, I decided to adopt a 6y old dog, who recently lost his “owner” I though we can help each other. I prepared my home for the newcomer (a beagle/hound mix) bought new bowls, beds, treats and toys (I kept all those stuff from my previous dog, but didn’t want to use those) The first thing I noticed with this new dog he is obsesses with food, food and nothing but food. He emptied already my bin all over the house in her first night. Taking her for a walk is a nightmare! she pulls like crazy, don’t listen at all, left, right, behind, turning etc. my arms are really sore from constantly holding her and pulling her back. I got her now for 10 days and I have to say honestly, I REGRED getting her into my life. She wakes me up every day at 5 or 6am demanding food and her walk! She has no interest at all in any toys not even a ball. She hauls at night like a wolf, keeping me awake. Those past 10 days have been hell for me, the company and fun I hoped for having a new dog turned into a nightmare. I don’t know what to do, give her back to the shelter??
Hi Lukas, she was already crate trained - most greyhounds sleep and live in their crates at the race course. The situation I’m describing in this video is when your new dog is in sheer panic on their first few nights with you and they cannot be calmed down as they are essentially having an anxiety breakdown.
Crating is cruel. Would you want to work or sit in a cage, even with an open door? Greys been caged their entire life. Why continue the cruelty? Humans lived in caves - is that your dream- to live in a dark cave or omit windows & lighting, with black walls? Crating for lazy owners who want a living toy at their convenience, like a doll on a shelf. Greys & all dogs are sensitive highly intelligent beings that deserve better than a cage.

Since dogs can be taken away for being a noise nuisance, I don't see how people can criticise.

Go to dog training. I can not stress this enough. To use the wrong tools on your dog can make them aggressive or even more anxious. Watch dog behavior seminars by professionals online.

You are very smart and got some good advice. So many new dog owners think ANY CORRECTION is abuse so many dogs are so mixed up, rule the roost and eventually get agression then the owners get rid of them. Dogs like children need correction.

Dogs do understand "command voice" but you really have to mean it, because they know if you are not sure. I raised a husky girl from the time she was 5.5 months old, and retired racing greyhounds are so much easier. They still sass you but not nearly on the level of a husky! Our grey boy is such a sweetie.

@@TheOtherJennyLee I have talked so many people out of huskies, and a few people IN to greyhounds, because of the relative ease of correction/training. But I think all dogs can tell if you're not putting your spine into it. Little buggers. :)

I used the can when teaching my dog not get on our couches (because she sheds so much) and it works instantly. Just throw the can with rocks or coins in it at them when you don't want them to do something and it works like magic.

I have 2 Romanie rescues . I did not drive 3 hours . I travelled for 4 DAYS through the EU with my dogs and another 13 dogs. These are rescue dogs that have went through horrendous conditions. This is not about you . The fact is you should not have a dog . Screaming at a rescue or abusing tgem with sprays just won't work. I have rescued over 450 dogs you should not be allowed anywhere near a dog.

The water spray and the can of coins ( a plastic bottle with stones can be used as well) are very common tools in dog schools, when dogs are about to get dominant around each other and won't react to firm voice. You can use it to throw also if your dog is eating something from the ground outside.
Lol, Daphne got outta there before you had another opportunity to shake that can of coins again. That's a clear sign that it works! 😂

In one of your videos, you said how you don’t do dogs sleeping in the bed - in your household! I died! 🛏️ 💀 😂😂 I agree and have learned not to do that with my future dog. I let my old dog sleep in my bed; because we made the mistake of letting him on the bed all the time. So he wouldn’t sleep anywhere else the most of the night!
However, trust and believe, his lil butt was allowed to sleep at the foot of our bed only. I wasn’t about to explicitly breathe in dog hair all night 😂😂
My first one was named Daphne. She was a small red brindle and a very girly dog. She was the light of my life. Lost her in 2008 and have missed her terribly. Did have several fosters and took in a super spook as a foster a few months later. Diva was with me until 2012 when I lost my home. She was removed with a family who had 2 other hounds and it was the best situation for her. And the wife of the couple who adopted her is a stay at home, which I wasnt.

What do you expect. they have never been in a house . Rescue dogs need time to adjust. MY greyhund couldn't climb stairs, afraid of tile floors, aren't potty trained. The Rescue said never to yell at them but to use redirecting, be firm, use rewards, and crate them. Gas or Diarrhea is common with the greyhounds when they are stressed especially from going from racedogs to a pet. First night's are tough with any new dog. It's a wonderful breed it's well worth it!!! ❤

The tissue paper skin has nothing to do with their feet. It's that if they get a cut on their side their skin can rip like a balloon when it pops. It'll freak out when you first see it but it just gets sewed up. It's a common occurance if you have been around enough of them.

To an extent this depends on the age of the dog/ I got a 10 week pup English Staffie. I ended up sleeping on the sofa with the pup snuggled between my arm and my body. Silence after about 10 seconds.
😲 👉 Daphne's face when her mom pulled out that water bottle like it was a magic wand! 🤣 She knows THAT thing! Also, absolutely agree- and it's not just Greyhounds. I have a Chihuahua/terrier little asshole son, Snoop 🐶! He enjoys ppl's reactions when he's trying to be Alpha dog, which eggs him on! One day while talking with my neighbor, Snoop tried to be intimidating and my neighbor stood there and looked him in the eye, pointer finger 👆 and stern NO! Snoop stood down and immediately submissive! It's a beautiful thing to look back to then and now! Also, I am going to tell everyone to call it your best dog mom voice! 🤣🙌🦴💙🐾

I think both discipline and positive reinforcement is necessary - and particularly when your dog is under major panic/anxiety like mine was - treats and praise don’t work. "Star" (her racing name Star Angel 🌟) would go to the back door. Stand straight up and pose, eyes locked on the yard. We would just pause and quickly push open the door... Phhhhhheeeewwwww! 💨She literally took off like a true racer and proceeded to do complete circular laps around the pool and gazebo! I was expecting her to wipe out or miss a turn but not Star! Hilarious like you can take her out of the track but you can't take the track out of her! 😍🐶

I used the can of coins when my dog was young and he disliked the sound so much, I could just say "can" and the dog's behavior changed.
Oh, Jenny, some of them never get over the farting. I had a foster I couldn't keep. Puked my guts up. Truly awful. That said, try feeding a tablespoon or two of plain yogurt. It was helpful to learn. Less stinky, too. Glad it seems to be working for you ladies. They are the sweetest dogs. I miss mine terribly, but my place is small an in a busy downtown area.

I just got a 2 month old blue Doberman husky mix less than 6 hours ago and she’s so sad and gassy 😭 i love her so much but trying to comfort her is so hard
I've seen videos about giving dogs some yogurt to help with the gas. You might want to talk to your vet about if this would be a good idea or not. I'm assuming that you have had your puppy check and treated (if necessary) for worms, as intestinal parasites can cause these symptoms.
The spray bottle is the best dog training tool you will ever own. When I got Daph the group I adopted from was very social and we were assigned an adoption buddy to ask questions and get help.
Dear Jenny, I'm a new mom of a 3 mos old greyhound. He has totally hated his crate and done the whining and screaming his first few nights unless I let him sleep with me. I must be more disciplined. Thanks! I say no in a dark voice but I've got to try the water spray!!! Daphne is beautiful. I hope my Lightning calms down at night , too. My baby is a sweetheart most of the day!

I haven’t watched your previous videos - sorry if I missed something. What are you feeding her? Food has an effect on your dogs behavior. I feed mine raw. Helps with gas and stool volume. She chewed on herself while you filmed this video. She appears anxious. Stay away from commercial foods. You are such a good mom! The coin can, command voice and water spray is brilliant. We use them. Hang in there. ❤️🐕
Make sure your greyhound puts on no more than 5lbs above racing weight- better for their health
funnily enough she lost 3 pounds after coming to me, but now i think we're at the original weight!
Just look up her racing weight-it’s a good rule of thumb for all adopters- because greys can eat and sleep all day in retirement!
I tried the spray in the face bit with my sheltie puppie. All it did was make her mad..and bark more. I used to be a substitute teacher. Many of the students thought i was retired military because I could shout orders to get a new group of students under control..so no problem there but this sheltie could care less. The noisy toy to her was just a ramped up play ti me as far as she was concerned. Sometimes treats sometimes work ..the only thing that works with her is to put her in her crate tent ,holler NO and cover the crate door and leave the room. Aaarrrrggggh,!!!!!!
All the videos I've watched say not to shout at them. So i wouldn't do that. I wouldn't use the spray or can either. They'll be more anxious.

yes we had stairs in the 2nd and 3rd apartments - she isn't a huge fan but she eventually was fine with it. In our 2 story townhouse at the moment she lives on the 1st floor and will only come upstairs when there are fireworks
My first night I spend on the sofa with her because he was too scared to go upstairs ... once the steps where overcome I had a greyhound in my bed ... pushing me out 🤣🤣🤣
With time he became more independant and slept on his sofa diwnstairs or on his bed upstairs.

Some greyhound owners will have their crates for a while - or permanently but we don’t use it anymore. She prefers to be without it!

Newly adopted dog is ruining my life!
I recently lost my beloved Dog Sparky, who was part of my life for almost 17y. His passing broke my heart, he was my best friend, always on my side.
My house felt lonely and I miss the company having a dog on my side to care for.
So, I decided to adopt a 6y old dog, who recently lost his “owner” I though we can help each other.
I prepared my home for the newcomer (a beagle/hound mix) bought new bowls, beds, treats and toys (I kept all those stuff from my previous dog, but didn’t want to use those)
The first thing I noticed with this new dog he is obsesses with food, food and nothing but food.
He emptied already my bin all over the house in her first night.
Taking her for a walk is a nightmare! she pulls like crazy, don’t listen at all, left, right, behind, turning etc. my arms are really sore from constantly holding her and pulling her back.
I got her now for 10 days and I have to say honestly, I REGRED getting her into my life.
She wakes me up every day at 5 or 6am demanding food and her walk! She has no interest at all in any toys not even a ball.
She hauls at night like a wolf, keeping me awake. Those past 10 days have been hell for me, the company and fun I hoped for having a new dog turned into a nightmare.
I don’t know what to do, give her back to the shelter??

Hi Lukas, she was already crate trained - most greyhounds sleep and live in their crates at the race course. The situation I’m describing in this video is when your new dog is in sheer panic on their first few nights with you and they cannot be calmed down as they are essentially having an anxiety breakdown.
Crating is cruel. Would you want to work or sit in a cage, even with an open door? Greys been caged their entire life. Why continue the cruelty? Humans lived in caves - is that your dream- to live in a dark cave or omit windows & lighting, with black walls? Crating for lazy owners who want a living toy at their convenience, like a doll on a shelf. Greys & all dogs are sensitive highly intelligent beings that deserve better than a cage.
