I had a very similar situation. Found a GSD at a county shelter (high kill) who was super friendly. However, she had mange and a hernia and was already scheduled to be euthanized the next day. I spent the day trying to convince them to let me adopt her. Went back the next day to make sure they did not do the eu-deed. Finally on my 3rd trip, they decided to let me keep her. Two days later their vet fixed her up, including the hernia. Two days after she went home with me. Had her for 11 years.

Well, many kill shelters actually have no problem euthanizing, even when they have space. One I often foster dogs from in NM has a director famous for saying 'I'm not running a hotel'. Really depends on the shelter. But yeah... until there are real consequences for breeding and spay and neuter legislation, the situation is dire, unfair and inexcusable. I saw on Instagram one day where Ikea in Italy open their doors to stray dogs for the winter and people who were shopping at IKEA decided to adopt dogs there while they also shop to buy their furniture. I wish large stores across the nation such as big chain grocery stores would do an adoption event once a month. There are so many people who go grocery shopping with their families who are thinking about adoption. It would be a one stop shop where families can shop for groceries and also adopt a pet. This would help relieve many animal shelters as well as reduce stray dogs roaming around in neighborhoods. I remember when I was little my dad took me to K-Mart and there would always be someone who brought kittens there for free and that’s how we got our first pet. If Ikea can do this is in Italy, local stores could do the same to help many animals needing a home, but I don’t think stores in America would?!

I think one of the issues doing this in America is the lawsuits. Big stores won't have untrained animals (especially dogs) in them for fear of getting sued. Small businesses such as independent pet stores may be more likely. I think if you live someplace with good weather, you may be able to organize an outdoor adoption event in an area of a grocery store parking lot.

Impulse adopting is not good, if people want to adopt they can make an effort to do so. You shouldn’t be able to get a dog while you are buying a carton of milk. Dogs are a big life changing decision, hence why so many are GIVEN UP. People don’t know how much work it is. They think it’s like the 5 second videos in tic tok or the well trained dogs that are in the movies. They are also expensive, there are a lot of factors you need to consider before getting an animal. (This is coming from someone who is a dog lover and dog owner. My life changed significantly since having a dog, and I am happy for it. But for some people the changes could be too much. Potty training, going for walks, going out to play, finding someone to watch your dog while you go out of town or finding a way to also take your dog. Feeding, buying toys etc. all this costs time and money. As I said I am more than happy to do this and more. If my dog can’t go with me somewhere then I’m not going, I haven’t seen a movie at the movie theater in 5 years. My dog makes me happy. But do not assume others think this way.)

I'm also in SoCal. Our shelters are way overcrowded thanks to breeders.
Years ago, when I was looking for a dog, I saw an ad in cragslist from a shelter volunteer saying Please come rescue this sweet lab - I can' t get her extended any longer! The shelter was fairly far from me and I made it just 10 minutes to closing. I met her, in the dark, and went to the desk to register as an interested party and told them I'd be back tomorrow. But when I came back with my husband, she wasn't at her kennel! I was livid - they had a ready adopter, how could they! And I went to the desk in a panic and they said, oh no she's ready, pull up at the Pick Up area. I was so relieved and happy. She looked like a red fox lab, and she was one of the best dogs I've ever had. She loved every minute she was alive, every person, every dog she met and she was super silly.
Every dog I've had since her has come from one of the SoCal overcrowded shelters. If you think they're doing a crappy job, go volunteer, make it better. You would not believe the endless stream of dogs and puppies being dropped off every day - but don't shame the people dropping off dogs, at least this way they have a chance. And volunteers make all the difference.

They are the main animal control for the ENTIRE Riverside county, which is huge, since many smaller shelters like blythe and hemet have closed down during to low adoption rates. Riv reaches out to nearby rescue organizations and fosters basically begging to take their dogs when its close to their euthanasia dates. Being the county shelter, they have to abide by laws and put them down. If you talk to any worker there you can immediately tell that they are truly animal lovers and doing what they can to help. We had her for 10 years and we loved her a lot. Sure she made some improvements but some things we could never change. The people at the shelter told us about her life as a street dog in Spain and then she got adopted but she already defended her resources. The new owners staring beating her to make her stop but it only got worse so they gave her back to the shelter. She never got adopted again and she was very aggressive in the shelter environment so they made the decision to give her to the killer station. We actually wanted to get a "normal" shelter dog but my Mom just couldn't leave her there so we took her instead. It was 10 crazy years, in the beginning she bit all of us but she started to trust us more and more. When I was a teenager we sat in the garden and I read stories to her because she didn't like to be touched still.
She died of old age in 2015. RIP my little girl. I'm so happy you could live with us.

So many say this. I adopted an American Bulldog from Baltimore City SPCA that was to be euthanized in 4 days time. Therefore, her adoption fee was reduced to $1. That was the best dollar I ever spent. She was 6 when I got her and left us 4 years later. It wasn't enough time. She was my favorite dog of all time. I miss her every day. The shelters are overwhelmed. People have to do better! These are living, breathing, loving beings that are not disposable! I've rescued over 18 dog's in my lifetime, usually having5-6 at a time trying help clean up the mess that humans created!

Omg I'm constantly watching the riverside, San Jacinto, and thousand palms shelters. The stories of some of these dogs breaks my heart. Although I did read somewhere it's around $200 to give up a dog, tho some are brought in as found dogs. There should really be something done, there's so many 🥺 and a lot of people who get dogs without understanding their needs, especially puppies that they have no patience to train

I always tell people to adopt instead of shopping when it comes to dogs because the shelters have such wonderful dogs just waiting for their forever homes. And at the moment, alot of shelters are full capacity-which means they are filled up with dogs. I adopted a pup today from them..I am going to name her Josie-she is a 6 month old Husky mix with a very calm demeaner, friendly and just downright beautiful. She was the first dog I saw-and the first one that I was 100% on adopting. And I've been searching for over a month or so. :) The shelters in my area have wonderful dogs..but some of the dogs I saw I wasn't 100% in adopting. When I saw Josie in the shelter today, I was in love immediately with her. I love how dedicated this wonderful lady is in volunteering at the Animal Shelter on Mondays. That is awesome and it needs to happen more often.

I was in shock at first but sprung into action to educate myself and advocate for my dog. I helped him build confidence and I'm so proud of how far he's come. I adopted a rescue 7 weeks ago. He was removed from a home with 9 other dogs. They were all kept in cages with no socialization. He was afraid of life - people, traffic, noises, tv, etc...It was incredibly difficult walk him because any noise would send him into a panic and having a 90 pound dog drag you home is tough. 7 weeks later and he's made so much progress. He's adjusted to traffic, he has even allowed some people he's met frequently to pet him, and he's just the sweetest thing. No separation anxiety, no chewing, walks well on leash, no fear of storms which was a surprise. He's blossomed into such a wonderful sweet boy with time and patience. And also when you can do nothing sharing the post helps too even if you feel like you don't have a lot of followers but you'll never know. I totally agree!!!! The way you are so patient with Luna (waiting for her to get in the car etc) is also something we could learn from. Love your last point too, we must not forget to take care of ourselves too so we can take continue to take care of others in the best that we can. I think this is important for people doing rescue works because it sometimes is truly saddening and draining for you all. It's a sad reality and we can't save all but still, we have to realize and accept the fact and continue to take care of ourselves and mental health so we can continue saving or helping to the best that we can. Please adopt, and if you can't even fostering can help!❤

I’ll be 100% honest with you. This has inspired me. My first dog (A large beautiful and healthy black German shepherd ) I adopted from a backyard breeder off of Craigslist because I was young and didn’t know much about shelters or ethical breeders. All I knew is I wanted his breed and.. that was it.
Watching this video has shown me that there are dogs in shelters that aren’t the “abused, problematic, reactive, mutts” that I was led to believe through family or friends. And that there are wonderful potentially perfect family dogs just sitting on the kill list. And I know that my next dog, and the one after that, and the one after that, I will find in a shelter. ❤ So basically thank you, because this “unimportant” video has just saved every dog in my future.

Thank you for rescuing her and finding her a home! I lost my big doggie on May 15th and during the first few I just couldn't picture having another dog nor did I want another one. He was my first dog, PERFECT for me. Aside from God, my mom, and my 1st love he is the only ever other being I've loved. The pain of losing him was a new type of pain and in the first few days I remember thinking "I don't ever want to feel this way again" however as a week went by I began thinking I need at least 2 years before I could ever adopt or have another dog but the guilt/regrets kept making me feel guilty. After watching you help save Luna & showing Luna and all the other dogs I decided I definitely want to adopt another dog or two (if possible I would love to have 4 big dogs) however that won't be until at least 1 year - closure to 2 once I am more emotionally stable from the loss and in a better financial place or at least health that way I can work as much as I need to in order to provide for a future dog. Luna is so cute and she made me realize I can definitely love another dog again and I shouldn't feel guilty about it due to the regrets I have. I just pray that my big doggie knows about my regrets and that I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!! I miss him a lot as well :(

the way they all looked so sad and just wanting to be adopted and loved made me cry. it’s so sad that they aren’t getting what they deserve and I hope one day they will, but it’s so hard to just see them all looking at you just wondering when they can be loved, and get fed treats, or even be taken to the dog park one day. They might not get that chance and that’s just awful. it is so sad to watch them watch her. breaks my heart

Thank you for doing what you’re doing! You have the biggest heart and it’s so sad to see how many pets get abandoned after their owners realize just how much work it takes to have a new fur member. I wish ppl were more aware and thank you for bringing awareness to this problem.

It’s fascinating seeing the cultural difference. I’m in the U.K. I don’t have pets myself, but I have lots of friends and relatives who do. I can only think of a couple who didn’t get theirs from shelters or the cat distribution network, and they had very specific reasons for doing so. And even so, we still have problems with shelters overcrowding and being under funded.

I'm a volunteer at my local animal shelter and going there is one of the best parts of my week. There will always be a dog that leaves a lasting impact on my heart but seeing them find a perfect home is the highlight of it all. Please continue advocating for these animals and doing what you do. I enjoyed this video and would love to see more in the future!

Thank you so much for highlighting the reality of how amazing shelter dogs can be! & the HARSH reality that even sweet young pups still get put down on a regular basis. ❤ Shes so lucky to be saved. Sincerely, dog mom of four amazing rescued babies.

Tell me why ou sick wackos can not respect animals? Taking the word ''mom'' away from the ONLY mom and dad that animals have, which are other animals, respect the word mom and dad I think. People and animals are not relatives, nobody is the ''mom, dad, sister, brother'' and so on to any animal nor will ever be stop the Disgusting retardation and blatant lies.
There is literally no need for all that retardation, also disrespect towards the animals, sooo.
It is neither cute nor nice to speak like that, sooo curious why, can you try to share why you lie like that?

Also, wacko, animals are not babies. Respect them for what they are, animals only, they are animals!
      Not babies.
