  • Today we're talking about the things that I wish I knew before adopting a dog. These are all things hit me like a slap in the face, and I don't want that to happen to you, so take note of these things before you adopt your dog. They're honest, and funny, and all of them are downright true. If you talk to any dog owner I think they they'll agree with me. Let me know in the comments section if these things are true for you too!
    Thank you for watching :)
    The short points:
    1. Dogs are expensive
    2. Dogs take up a lot of your time
    3. Dogs steal your social life
    4. Dogs steal your beauty sleep
    5. Sometimes you're going to hate your dog, and it's totally okay

    This is a wonderfully honest video. It's something anything considering adopting should watch. I think the two most important tips were about the expense of having a dog and the time you must devote to your pet. A lot of times when you adopt you may not know the full history of the animal. You must be honest with yourself about you finances and could you afford care if an emergency arises. Secondly, dogs take a lot of time. Sadly one of my resuces was abused and neglected. It took a great deal of time and patience to earn his trust. You cant just get a dog and leave it alone for the majority of the day. But believe me, the time you invest will be tripled by the love and companionship the animal will return to you after that relationship is formed.🐶

  • @DavidEVogel
    @DavidEVogel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Thanks for mentioning "Time." I believe that a happy dog is also a well behaved dog, and that will take up your time. A dog needs both physical and mental stimulation. Physical stimulation can be a simple walk. Mental stimulation can be children's games like hide-and-seek. Two hours a day should be "dog time."
    You can also add the dog to your activities such as a trip to the ATM or picking up food and McDonalds. These activities may seem mundane to you, but for the dog they are adventures. So, many of your daily activities can be shared. Vacuum cleaning the house? Tie a toy to the vacuum cleaner, and make it a shared game.

    What a great video from a wise young woman, well done for being such a good doggy mum :-)
    I'm in my 50's and 3 months ago I got pound hound, she's not my first dog but I'd forgotten how much time they take up, how you have re-arrange your life around them, I am up at dawn walking and racing home after work, rather than getting the shopping done etc fortunately for me I am an early bird and a homebody so actually suits me well but even so, sometimes it's it's difficult catching up with non doggy owning friends or getting away for a weekend.
    And omg and the expense! I started keeping a spread sheet .... your initial fee and vet bills are just the start of it, collar, lead, poo bags, more poo bags, bed, crate, toys, more toys, dog wash, nail clippers, brush, bowls, chews, more chews, dog guard and car mat for the car, coat (she's a whippet x and Winter's coming!), and the cost of feeding a medium sized dog a decent quality food, wow, seriously, wow! I've been blown away when you average it over a week!!
    However, I love this dog sooo much, she's super smart and loves learning, and loves me (melts my heart) I love being out walking with her (and I've lost weight :-) ) I can't imagine life without her already. For me, she is so worth the effort. But people underestimating these things are the main reason there are so many dogs in the pound.

      Oh gosh, I think that everyone has those thoughts every once in a while! We've all had moments, but I find that the good ones usually outweigh the bad :)

  • @barbaral3302
    @barbaral3302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate the last one haha It goes a bit with the theme of this video, which seems to be more about getting your FIRST dog than adopting a second dog or anything. But, I'd say after adopting my first dog where I was the sole owner (ie not a family dog like my parents dogs when I was younger) it was SO easy to get frustrated. So much more is impacted than you realize! Even if you don't have a booming social life as you say LOL - it's SO hard to adjust and also SO easy to get frustrated with your dog because you feel overwhelmed! At least that's absolutely what happened to me. Definitely we got through it in no time, but those first couple weeks are wayyyy tougher than I ever would have thought!

    when my dog was a puppy he used to wake up 430 every morning, thank god he can sleep in until 7 now and he has me trained. I just go back to sleep afterwards. Some dogs are more expensive than others but you need to be prepared for those expenses. My older dog, I could budget about 20 bucks a month and he was great, now my budget is at least 100 a month because my newer dog has allergies and needs to eat a different food and can chew through 'extreme' chew toys is less than an hour. I have my vet on speed dial because of him. Totally relate to the death of the social life, I feel guilty at the gym now because he isn't getting exercise.

    One of the things I feel people don’t talk about when they get a shelter dog or one is abandoned and someone is trying to find them a home is that they are often untrained and stubborn. I lot of shelter dogs/ rescues is that there often adults and are untrained. Of course you shold still adopt them and there great friends but they can be stubborn and difficult. I feel this is one of the reasons people get so frustrated with there new friend since they don’t know what to do and not to do.

    I have a couple rescues. Mae-Mae is about 2 and was adopted about a month ago. Charlie is about 6 months and was adopted 2 weeks ago. Charlie is a handful and a half. But he’s a puppy and I know that. Mae is pretty good except the first nigh we had her, she chewed and ruined our 6 month old couch. She also loves literally jumping onto the table like a cat. 😂

    Time: Very important. Dogs are social animals, and must be involved in your life. Exercise is key. A tired dog is a well behaved dog. You may alter your "no dog" activities to become dog activities. We can all benefit from walking: take the dog. Going to the ATM? Take the dog. Want to meet with your friends for coffee? Just sit outside: take your dog. Plenty of restaurants have outdoor patios, and allow dogs.

    I think most of these could just be said for owning a dog in general, not necessarily a rescue 😂. I used to have a beagle who passed away last year because he was sick. But maybe money was the worst aspect because vet bills can just pop up out of the blue if something randomly happens to the dog.
    My family was pretty much all early risers and we had a backyard, so he’d come and go as he pleased. He’d know to go to the back door when he had to go out and scratch, and bark when he wanted to come back in. We could usually leave him at home if we had to go out, and immediately let him outside once we got back so that wasn’t really an issue. We also had family who would watch him for us if we went on vacations, and we’d do the same for them and their pets.
    If I do get a future dog though it’s 100% coming from a shelter or rescue because it’s worth it to let the dog experience love and a family that it otherwise might not have known.

    lol, the whole morning thing. Ahhh, no. I put up with this for my dog. They can adjust to your schedule if it's routine. In fact, as your dog gets older, that's usually the case. It's that initial period over several months where your dog might be an early bird morning lark. You can get your dog to adjust if you incorporate plenty of exercise like the night before. You know, some dogs really like to be awake all night long. Speaking of sleep vs. wake cycles, this is an interesting read --->
    www.foundanimals.org/how-many-hours-a-day-do-dogs-sleep-and-other-dog-sleep-questions-answered/
    "dogs are not nocturnal or diurnal. They’re social sleepers and simply take their cues from their owners. When their humans go to sleep, they do. So if you suddenly became nocturnal, your dog might be too."
    I say it's true about dogs being social sleepers in that they sleep following your schedule.

    I think realizing that dogs that come from a shelter have been emotionally traumatized in many situations by being give it up by their original owners or perhaps being neglected in someway. So you’re kind of having to be a detective with an adult dog. My two rescue dogs came to me with information that said they were housebroken and knew how to sit stay and come and walk out a leash and had no poor behaviors at all. I’ve had them for 2 1/2 months now. In short they were not housebroken or trained in anyway. It’s been a long 2 1/2 months but we’re starting to show progress.

    I can understand that sometimes people will get frustrated or annoyed or even angry or upset but that means that they need to understand why the Dog is doing what is bothering them, it could be that they are settling in or that the owner has encouraged the behaviour Or there could be training your doing with your Dog but not everyone in the house understands how to do it or that they should be doing it

    Here are the five things I wish I had known prior to scooping up my three rescues up: 1) Adorable puppies can be super hard to find a great home for. When you grab a stray because there must be a home out there for them, you might find out that home is your home. 2) New dogs are not guaranteed to be friends with preexisting dogs, cats and other pets. They will vie for your time, your lap, food, toys, and pack hierarchy. They plot other species murder and/or exile at an alarming rate. Interfering with this is futile will only result in dog fights, bites and long packets of reading materials from the no kill shelter you inevitably try to dump one at. Basically, for the most part, you have 2 choices for inter pet conflict- get rid of one, or let them work it out themselves. 3) Dogs are not always easy to train. One learned to sit in 5 seconds. Another took weeks and several hundred dollars in training bills. 4) Dogs sometimes eat 💩. No dog can resist horse or cat 💩. Sometimes their own?! No matter how much expensive, fancy food and treats you lavish them with. So gross, so real. I literally couldn’t get over the fact no one told me this could happen when it happened to me. 5) When all this (literal and figurative) shit goes down, you will find out you love them too damn much to part with them anyway. Damn dogs.

      I would say; listen to this 'you will hate your dog thing'. It's like parents who are frustrated with their children. You need a lot of patience. My family dog is blind and deaf due to age related problems and my father doesn't play with her anymore. My siblings and mom also don't give her as much attention anymore, because she can't really interact in that many ways. All you can do with her is give her loads of cuddles and throw treats for her to find with her sense of smell.
      Our dog also finds baths traumatizing, which is why we don't like to bathe her too often and she gets very dirty and not fun to cuddle or touch (kind of feels like there's cornstarch on you hands afterwards). I've tried to get my parents to try and bathe her in our indoors shower, but they are kind of old fashioned and only want to bathe the dog in a tub that is too small, in cold water and outside when it's hot out.
      Keep all of this in mind when you get a dog: you need to give them everything you can, make them as happy as you can and simply accept anything that comes in return. You cannot communicate how you feel to your dog, you can only accept them as they are. They will get old and get all kind of problems that will make it harder.
      It's a commitment and it is sometimes a hard one.
      It's also a very rewarding one and i love my Lilo to death.
      She was my best friend growing up and still is my truest friend.

    I live in a flat is it ok for me to adopt a dog?

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, of course! When dogs are inside they typically don't need a lot of space. As long as the dog is getting enough exercise and stimulation throughout their day then living in a flat is fine for a dog

    • @canreffy
      @canreffy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Blazing Joel - just be sure that your dog is not a confirmed barker. Your neighbours will hate you if the dog barks and whines all day. Also, choose a fairly sedate breed, one that doesn't need a lot of exercise. Hence terrier types are probably not good candidates for apartments. Your apartment dog should be neutered (*all* dogs and cats should be neutered!) Otherwise it will be pre-occupied with its hormones, and also, if male, will compete with you for turf, and do that by peeing here and there *in* your home to establish ownership(!) And the apartment dog must have good manners and be socialized to people and other dogs, because you will be constantly meeting up with both.

This one was one of the first ones I ever made (with no experience what-so-ever), so it was very much a learning experience, and things have changed since then. My channel is all about dog adoption/fostering/dog walking, so if you're looking for dog content then there are lots there! I've since seen that music throughout the whole video is cringe, so don't worry about encountering that again!

    Newly adopted dog is ruining my life!
    I recently lost my beloved Dog Sparky, who was part of my life for almost 17y. His passing broke my heart, he was my best friend, always on my side.
    My house felt lonely and I miss the company having a dog on my side to care for.
    So, I decided to adopt a 6y old dog, who recently lost his “owner” I though we can help each other.
    I prepared my home for the newcomer (a beagle/hound mix) bought new bowls, beds, treats and toys (I kept all those stuff from my previous dog, but didn’t want to use those)
    The first thing I noticed with this new dog he is obsesses with food, food and nothing but food.
    He emptied already my bin all over the house in her first night.
    Taking her for a walk is a nightmare! she pulls like crazy, don’t listen at all, left, right, behind, turning etc. my arms are really sore from constantly holding her and pulling her back.
    I got her now for 10 days and I have to say honestly, I REGRED getting her into my life.
    She wakes me up every day at 5 or 6am demanding food and her walk! She has no interest at all in any toys not even a ball.
    She hauls at night like a wolf, keeping me awake. Those past 10 days have been hell for me, the company and fun I hoped for having a new dog turned into a nightmare.
    I don’t know what to do, give her back to the shelter??

    • @puudathemeow5593
      @puudathemeow5593 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe train her? If she's that food motivated just use clicker training to shape basic behaviours like sit and heel and start teaching her other basics over time. You can also probably get her more interested in toys if you really wanted to, but it's possible to train with only food and pets, that's what I usually do anyways.

    When your dog gets cancer from over vaccination your vet bills will get much higher, and your vet will get several mortgage payments from you. My advice, rabies only and you can shop. AND KEEP YOUR DOG AWAY FROM OTHER DOGS and mosquito infested areas.
