BookswithEmilyFox definitely finishing series that I started if they are all published and reading/listening to more audiobooks cause it’s not cheating like my sister thinks 😂
I'm planning an extensive "empty shelvie" challenge since I have around sixty books I bought in 2018 and 2017 that must be read before I buy new books. So, I'll only buy a new book after I had read five books I had already bought.
I love when you pronounce English words correctly but just with a French accent. It sounds so much better. I think my big book this year is going to be Anna Karenina. My plan is to read at least four classics this year and I think Anna Karenina is the biggest one I picked.
@@basho4306 I somehow got away with never reading any Russian literature in high school or my undergrad English degree. So this is my first one. Hubby read it and loved it. So I hope I will too.
Same, me too @ Anna Karenina! Depending on how you see it, it will most probably be my biggest book too. I also want to finish The Witching Hour by Anne Rice, which I think is only a bit longer, but I started it this year so I’m not counting it.
Reality dysfunction was garbage IMO bloated book, with fun story which badly needed to be about 400 pages shorter... And it is the first volume of series with more painful bloated books, horrendous cliches and characters I hated....
I vote: 1. Crime and Punishment, 2. Finish Monte Cristo, and 3. The Reality Dysfunction because that’s the ultimate big book challenge since it’s over 1000. You can do it!
I LOOOOOVED The Secret History but The Goldfinch is my favourite book of all time!!! I do recommend reading TSH first tho because it's more accessible, if you like it then definitely give The Goldfinch a shot!
AGREED! Goldfinch is one of my all time favorites! I actually read it first and then read TSH but I loved them both (Goldfinch a bit more though- it’s a classic!).
How does the ending (without spoilers) of TSH compare with the Goldfinch’s?? I was so unsatisfied with the Goldfinch’s because I was left like “really? After everything he’s been through??” Which i guess is sort of the point, but I didn’t like the ending. I’m v interested in TSH but idk if I want to risk having another ending like that.
Finish Le Compte because if you start Les trois mousquetaires you'll have to read the sequel Vingt ans après and if you read that you'll have to read the third book in the trilogy, Le vicomte de Bragelonne, which is split into three books in the Folio classique edition and those three books add up to 2700 pages! But it's fast paced and a wonderful series to read when you decide to embark on the adventure! I read those last 2700 pages in one month: something I've never done! But for now, Le Compte!
Omg Needful things is my favourite Stephen king book ever!!!! It actually got me back into reading after stopping for 9 years!!! Everything happens so fast and it actually has a decent ending!!
I'm reading Dune with you this year! I'm going to predict that even if it's not to my liking, I'd still be able to appreciate the enormous impact it had on the science fiction world.
Read crime and punishment and I'll join in with you. I also have three musketeers on my bookshelf and wasn't planning on it anytime soon but maybe I'll join in with that too.
Omg "A Little Life" will break you apart piece by piece. I just finished it. It's normally hard for a book to make me cry and although it is a very very sad book, I cried once. Majority of the books on your reading list is on my reading list, so I'll be joining your big book challenge.
Crime and Punishment is more popular, in part because it's a part of school curriculum in Russia - I myself read it for school and honestly? I hated it, not because it's a bad book, but because it just fills you with this greyness and hopelessness and some part of the story were a bit too much for my sensitive soul. That's just me though - I don't think you're gonna have a problem with that, Emily. And yesss, Dune!! I love that book and I actually want to reread it in 2019 and hopefully read the rest of the series cause I looove that world, it is so detailed and thought-out. It's not just sci-fi bits that are cool - there's also politics and interpersonal relationships and also ecology is very important? It's a great book hehe
I think the three musketeers and the sparrow for the ones we can vote on! I think I'm going to try and follow along with you. I noticed that I'm pretty stuck in the fantastic genre and want to branch out! Some of these sound so intriguing!
I am planning to read Dune next year too! Also having plenty of big books in TRL, hopefully will finish most of them! Also having read C&P and Idiot, I will read another Dostoyevsky classic- Eternal Husband, but it only being novella I do not think it counts as a big book (although all D books are huge in a way...)
I will totally read these... except the classics with you! I love that you slip into french when the words are spelled the same. It's an adorable quirk and shows who you are!
Ah yeah, if you go into The Passage thinking it's a YA book you're going to have a bad time. It's a literary take on the Vampire/Horror genre. It's very atmospheric and character driven. Very slow in some parts but also heart-racing at the beginning to help get you going. Wonderful read in the end.
Ah, you and I are kindred spirits, lol. My absolute favorite trope is the Groundhog Day trope where someone lives a chunk of time over and over. I also love Time Travel stories in general (even though they are always full of paradoxes/plot holes). I'd love to see you do a video about books with this trope; that would be so fun! :D
The Passage is big and scary, but so worth reading, and the books in the series only get better as you keep going (I finished City of Mirrors this year). Good luck with your Big Books challenge! I really need to pick up a Neal Stephenson book at some point, but his books are so intimidating!
I have planned to read so many of those this year. Would be fun if you created a book club for the big book challenge, maybe on goodreads? Btw I would recommend getting a different edition of The Idiot, the translator for that version really isn’t very good.
"The idiot" has a great title, i choose that one. OMG I LOOOOVE the way you pronounce the french. I totally think you should finish Le Conde de Monte-Cristo.
I have a big book recommandation for you Emily: the Witching Hour by Anne Rice. It is 1207 pages and has been keeping me pretty entertained for the past couple of months! 😄 Anne Rice's writing is amazing!
I loved The Secret History! I feel like it has a very Shakespearean plot, very character driven, so if you enjoy that type of thing you'll like it. The writing is gorgeous too.
i think that you have bigger chance to finish Idiot. C&P has better story but also contains some scenes in the middle which are famous DNF inducing. And Idiot is less depressive. BTW I love them both! Dostoyevsky is the GOAT! ❤️❤️❤️
I feel Crime and punishment would be easier - less characters with scary names, quite straight forward plot, but it’s good and makes you think a lot! Also I think it suites your taste better
Needful Things is good, I liked it but it's just too long. Great idea for a story but it could have been shorter and that would have made it better. That being said, it's a page-turner and I'm glad I read it
ohhhh my gosh, so many of these books are on my tbr/ones I’m really excited about, too! especially The Count of Monte Cristo, A Little Life, The Secret History, Dune, The Passage, Needful Things, and NOS4A2... but also several of the sci fi books you talked about toward the end that I had never heard of before 😂 hmm... maybe I should use a readalong as a kick in the butt to finally get to these... 🤔😜
I know Stephen King has a book or two with aliens (dreamkeepers, tommyknockers?) they are also pretty big but I would love to see your review on these alien thriller novels sometime! Haha. Maybe big books for 2020? 😉
I've been meaning to read a Donna Tartt novel! I've heard lots of great things about her books so I might join you and read The Secret History 😉 I also got Les fiancés de l'hiver from my library, so I plan on reading that one pretty soon!
I've read Dune, The Secret History and The Passage, they were all great! Also, I loved the second book in the Passage trilogy even more than the first one and I've been meaning to reread Dune so I can continue on with the series :) I've always heard The Count of Monte-Christo is amazing and one of my friend's favorite book ever is The Three Musketeers so I can't help you choose between the two, I need to read them too! :p I really want to read Life After Life and A Winter's Promise, I've heard a lot of great things about them! I have Red Mars on my shelves as well but I'm really afraid of its size plus I remember hearing it's a hard sci-fi book with biology from other planets so it sounds good but not the easiest to get through x)
I agree about the Passage. Like 80% of the reviews say that the second book is slower and less interesting, but I did enjoy it a bit more than the first one, too.
@@sashugh I personally thought the first one dragged a bit in the middle while the second one was perfect, I loved all the new perspectives we got and seeing the story move along! :)
There is quite a few books in the Dune series. A long time ago, I've read 3 or 4 of them, I can't quite remember. I've watched the original movie and I watched the TV movies for Dune and Children of Dune.
Firstly, remember that the print size, page size and font as well as paper thickness will make books bigger than they really are. If you look at different editions, you’ll get a better feel for the real length of the story. Don’t be afraid of Donna Tartt. She’s brilliant. And you will love Dune. Which is tiny in paperback. I personally love big, long books bc there’s just more story.
Red Mars is on my list this year! First Kim Stanley Robinson for me. I'm half way through Michener's Hawaii right now (over 1000 pages) and also hoping to read more BIG books in 2019
Needful Things is best enjoyed when you’ve already read Cujo and... some other Castle Rock book that I can’t remember now. It makes a lot of references to those earlier stories, and since I read Needful Things before those, they went completely over my head!
I'm doing a similar challenge, but a little different. I plan on five big books to make sure I get enough time to read other things. You got me out of my slump this year by the way. After binging your videos (again) I realised I had been going after wrong books and needed to get back into my comfort zome. I'm super exited you picked The Secret History. It's her best book in my opinion, it made a huge impression first time I read it. Also definitely Crime and Punishment! It's very easy read for a classic. I might read Seveneses myself. Might have added a few S' in that title 😂 Other than that I plan for sure: Swan Song, Dark Materials (the pretty big edition), third Game of Thrones book and The Once and Future King.
I’m willing to read A Little Life, The Secret History and Dune with you. 😂 I have them all on my shelf waiting for me and I have been too scared to pick them up. I also need to read the Stand this year, maybe Seveneves too. There are so many! I told myself this year I would try to read more big a** books lol. I vote yes for The Mote in God’s Eye. I haven’t read it myself yet but I’m intrigued.
I'll be reading The Passage with you, my edition is over 1000 pages O.O, so it will be motivating to read it with you. I will also be challenging myself to read a least 1 big book a month. Good luck this year with your challenge!
NOS4A2 references Christmas, but it takes place in the summer. Lots of hot, sweaty weather. Just an fyi since I'm a seasonal reader and wanted to read a "winter" book during the holidays.
A little life! YES!!! BIG YES! Can't wait to hear what you think of it. I will join you in Crime and punishment, and Dune. Yeah.. I did read the Passage and didn't like it at all. NOS4A2 is also on my list, I actually met him and he signed my copy.. nice guy. Seveneves I feel like you're gonna LOVE! its an amazing sci-fi I loved it so much. I vote Sphere!!! I also have it and didn't read it yet. So if it wins the vote, I'll read it myself. All the best with the haul! Happy new year ❤️
Omg please read dune! It’s big but very fast paced so it doesn’t feel like it has that many pages. I’m not really impartial to comment on it because this is my favorite book of all time, and it makes me really happy to see someone on booktube mention it. Good luck with your big reads in 2019! Also, I think you should finish the count of monte cristo - it’s been quite a while since I’ve read it but I remember really liking it!
This first big book I want to read next year is The Way of Kings, which you didn't mention but I see it on your shelf so it counts. I have the same edition as well, and also the other two in hardcover, just like you! Pretty awesome :) Good luck with your big book goal!
Brian McClellan actually studied under Brandon Sanderson and attended his writing classes and so he definitely takes a lot of influence from him! I'm sure you're gonna love his novels! x
oooh I have Needful things NOS4A2 which I meant to read this year but just never got round to, so definitely tempted to save them until you read them now! Great picks btw :) x
One of the cool things about Dune is that because it's such a quintessential sci-fi classic, you can totally catch things that you might recognize in sci-fi works that came later. A lot of tropes in sci-fi that we take for granted actually originated in this book! I'm about 100 pages into it, and while not much has happened, the world building is very well done. Don't watch the movies/miniseries.
I definitely want to read some of the big books with you!! I’m always so intimidated, buts some of these books sound incredible :) Love your videos as always ❤️
NOS4A2 shouldn't intimidate you at all! I literally read it in two days. I started and could not stop. One of the best books I've ever read. I hope you get to it this year!
I love when I read an older book and fall in love. Rebecca be de Maurier and East of Eden by Steinbeck blew my mind this year. I reread Dune this year and really liked it. My husband read it for the first time and hated it. Our marriage will survive. The Passage is so good. I’d be surprised if you didn’t like it.
Yes! I've been waiting for this video haha. I joined you last year in reading more big books and while I failed miserably at reading the specific books on my list, I did read quite a few big books, like you haha. I will definitely be reading A Little Life with you, I've been staring at it on my shelves for way too long. I'm currently reading Sleeping Beauties by Stephen and Owen King and trying to finish it before the end of the year..
A little life me tente énormément, je l'emprunterais à la médiathèque à l'occasion. Bonnes lectures Emily !
Crime and Punishment is so good! I also loved The Brothers Karamazov, but the ending pissed me off. Dostoevsky can be tedious to read, and something to know before diving into his books is that many of the characters go by multiple names, so it can sometimes be hard to follow unless you take notes.
Red Mars is very hard sci-fi. It's like the ultimate guide to colonise Mars but still has a very compelling story. If you're into it it's a must. If not, it will quite stretchy.
What are you planning a your "2019 Reading Challenge"? :)
BookswithEmilyFox definitely finishing series that I started if they are all published and reading/listening to more audiobooks cause it’s not cheating like my sister thinks 😂
going to do the challenge of 100 books a year again and will do a big books challenge as well, I think.
Trying to read a good portion of the books on my TBR, because it's getting kinda ridiculous.
I would like to read more series because I know I would like them but I'm scared of the commitment that long series requires :/

U should add a poll on the video so u have a better overview of which book most people choose^^
Which big Sci-fi I am reading?
The Mote in God's Eye, The Sparrow, Sphere, Red Mars or The Reality Disfunction?
I haven't read any of those, but I would go with the big and scary one, The Reality Distinction. That title is so interesting! 👀
Red Mars please
Red Mars
Reality dysfunction was garbage IMO bloated book, with fun story which badly needed to be about 400 pages shorter... And it is the first volume of series with more painful bloated books, horrendous cliches and characters I hated....
The Sparrow
I vote: 1. Crime and Punishment, 2. Finish Monte Cristo, and 3. The Reality Dysfunction because that’s the ultimate big book challenge since it’s over 1000. You can do it!
I agree with all of them
Three Musketeers or I am doing the smart thing and finishing Le Comte de Monte-Cristo?

Finish The Count of Monte Cristo! 🌼

AGREED! Goldfinch is one of my all time favorites! I actually read it first and then read TSH but I loved them both (Goldfinch a bit more though- it’s a classic!).
I DNF’d the Goldfinch 😔 feel like I need to pick it back up but DNFing really makes me hesitate trying it again.
YES! I loved The Goldfinch too ❤️
How does the ending (without spoilers) of TSH compare with the Goldfinch’s?? I was so unsatisfied with the Goldfinch’s because I was left like “really?
Dune was hard to get into at first, but I'm glad I stuck with it. If I was to do it over again I'd listen to an audiobook.
Happy new year ❤️
I have a few of these either on my shelf or on my wish list. Will try to join you when I can!
A Little Life will change your life. Literally. Takes a bit to get into but it’s so worth it!
Brian McClellan actually studied under Brandon Sanderson and attended his writing classes and so he definitely takes a lot of influence from him! I'm sure you're gonna love his novels! x
I am going to be buddy reading so many of these with you this year!
The Passage is awesome, I read it on kindle so it was a bit less scary than holding that weighty tome! I really want to read Promise of Blood too.
oooh I have Needful things NOS4A2 which I meant to read this year but just never got round to, so definitely tempted to save them until you read them now! Great picks btw :) x
I love it when you update i get super hyped
One of the cool things about Dune is that because it's such a quintessential sci-fi classic, you can totally catch things that you might recognize in sci-fi works that came later.
A lot of tropes in sci-fi that we take for granted actually originated in this book! I'm about 100 pages into it, and while not much has happened, the world building is very well done.
Don't watch the movies/miniseries.
Oh! Je suis aussi super intriguer par le livre Les fiancés de l'hiver! Might have to pick that one up when you decide to read it
Oh The Passage is fantastic! One of my favorites. I didn’t know it was YA.
It isn't IMHO, it's a horror novel. Nothing YA about it, they're just marketing it like this to get the Hunger games fans.
I definitely want to read some of the big books with you!! I’m always so intimidated, buts some of these books sound incredible :) Love your videos as always ❤️
I want to read big books with you again. Last year I had read 5 from your tbr and I liked that.
Seveneves was so intimidating to me. It took me quite a while to get into it, but it was so incredible. I still think about it years later.
NOS4A2 shouldn't intimidate you at all! I literally read it in two days. I started and could not stop. One of the best books I've ever read. I hope you get to it this year!
I am planning on reading Brandon Sanderson this year!! Pretty big books 🤗
The Passage is my favorite book, I hope you love it also. I’ll try to read Dune as well, it’s been on my shelf waiting for the right time.
The last one was Red Mars!! I should read that one next year too!
Finish Count of Monte Cristo! It’s great!! My second fave Classic, after Jane Eyre.
I received Gone With The Wind for Christmas, it's almost 1000 pages, so i have to get to that next year, I'm in for a big book project!
I loved red Mars. Loved it. It's heavy on the science ( which I love). However, it's also very philosophical.
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IS SO GOOD 💛💛💛
Crime and Punishment is so good! I also loved The Brothers Karamazov, but the ending pissed me off. Dostoevsky can be tedious to read, and something to know before diving into his books is that many of the characters go by multiple names, so it can sometimes be hard to follow unless you take notes.
I have Dune on my TBR for next year and would like to read it with you as it scares the hell out of me since it has arrived at my house :)
Omg you picked up Les Fiancés de l'Hiver I am so excited to finally see a channel in English talking about it 😍
Red Mars would be my choice from the larger stack of library found books!
Red Mars is very hard sci-fi. It's like the ultimate guide to colonise Mars but still has a very compelling story. If you're into it it's a must. If not, it will quite stretchy.
The promise of blood and needful things are great a must read.
