    Omg so thankful for this distraction. It's 2:45am and my dog is just getting back from an evening/night at the emergency vet. There's no I can slept because I'm literally watching her breathing and I'm so paranoid something will happen to her, so this is well needed right now and some tea. Not the best day....

    I’d start with Notes from Underground and some other short stories by Dostoevsky, to get the feel for his writing style (also it’s less intimidating). I’d also suggest getting a different edition of The Karamazov Brothers, since the translation in that one is quite rubbish and I’d hate for someone to dislike Dostoyevsky because of a bad translation. :)

  • @clairemeehan4141

    I read Kings of the Wyld recently and loved it - it doesn't take itself too seriously because the band has the most improbable good luck. Senlin Ascends was a little slow at the start and I wasn't sure how I was going to relate to Thomas Senlin, but once in the tower the pace picks up and you find yourself drawn right in. I loved the book and have now just read book 3 and waiting for book 4. I want to read Good Omens - I love Terry Pratchett's work and usually enjoy Neil Gaiman's writing too.

    Kings of the Wyld is ridiculous fun and it needs to be approached like that. I had one friend disappointed because they didn't like the humor, but I loved it. BTW the daughter isn't kidnapped... she's a fighter who is trapped in a besieged city. She's not helpless, she's just in a desperate situation. I know you haven't read the book and wouldn't know, but it's not quite the helpless damsel in distress. The author's women are really strong.

    I hope you enjoy reading Good Omens. It is one of my top ten books for sure. Neil isn't everybody's cup of tea but maybe you'll end up liking him after reading Good Omens. Terry Prachett is another excellent writer in my opinion - a wicked sense of humor for sure. I got to meet him once (Neil too).
    I'll be reading Kings of the Wyld next. I'm looking forward to it, everyone talks about how good it is. Issac Asimov is definitely one of the big influencers of the SF genre. I think anyone who is not just a casual reader of SF should spend some time getting to know his works. I enjoy reading him but personally I like is shorter works better than his novels. Make sure you read his novella Nightfall at some point.
    You have a nice book haul there. Happy reading and thanks for sharing your videos.

    The Karamazov Brothers. It's waay easier to read than the Crime and Punishment. If it's going to be your first book from Dostoevsky, go with the Karamazov Brothers. And don't be afraid, you're lucky Dostoevsky's writing style is so much lighter in translation than it is in Russian ;)

  • @masoodvoon8999
    @masoodvoon8999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bros Karamazov is my favorite by him. I feel that the themes, character development and plot are more complex than Crime and Punishment and so therefore it was much more interesting. And you may need that going into his writing if you aren't used to it. This and War and Peace are my fav Russian classic novels.

    • @Morfeusm
      @Morfeusm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just reading Anna Karenina. Is War and Peace written similarly?

    • @masoodvoon8999
      @masoodvoon8999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Morfeusm I felt it was much different personally. War and Peace is a much more epic tale involving two nobles (of course) who have much different personal challenges. One marches off to war for part of the story and the other has to deal with a convoluted legacy issue. Unique tales that end up providing an insight into that Russian time period more than other classics I have read.

  • @tiffanyyyyyyt
    @tiffanyyyyyyt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    According to a good friend of mine who loves Dostoevsky, Brothers Karamazov is easier to start with than Crime and Punishment because it has fewer characters that it follows so it'll be less confusing especially for people who are just trying to get into his works. But he said that both are fantastic nonetheless!

    For Neil Gaiman, I recommend Neverwhere. Or even American Gods. Or Stardust. Those are all fantasy and not magical realism. Neverwhere, in my opinion, is like a better Darker Shades of Magic (which I did also enjoy!) and it's my absolute favorite. The House at the End of the Lane is not a good representation of his writing I don't think. He is one of my favorite authors and I felt very meh about it and found it forgettable. If you do Good Omens, I'd recommend checking out the BBC radio full cast dramatization. I personally enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorites of his works. Hope you end up liking it more than THatEotL!
    Senlin Ascends and Kings of the Wyld are also on my TBR for the month. I'm excited to see if they live up to the hype. 💕

    As you are exploring classic sci-fi, I want to recommend "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis. It is part of a trilogy, but stands alone. It is a first contact novel with life from Mars and was published in 1938.

      Same! I also like and read a lot of the same books Emily does, but Gaiman is one of my absolute favorite authors. I will say The House at the End of the Lane was probably my least favorite and not a great first pick to get a feel for him as an author, so idk. Maybe she'll give him more of a chance after Good Omens?

      I actually read most of my Gaiman via audiobook. He often narrates his own work, and it is phenomenal. It really adds another layer to the story. That's how I experienced Ocean and it is one of my favorites.

    Have you read Old Man's War by John Scalzi? It's probably my favorite Sci-Fi book. Really interesting and hilarious, definitely not hard sci fi. The Foundation trilogy is also really good, only thing that got me a little bummed is that I figured the "big twist" before it happened haha

    I thought I was the only person who just can’t gel with Gaiman’s writing! It just does nothing for me!

      A Game of Pages I HATE his work!! I feel like he has AMAZING plots... and then absolutely DESTROYS them!!! It’s soooooo disappointing!

    Also, I also could never get into Neil Gaiman but his Sandman graphic novels are great. I think you would enjoy them
