    If you ever take a book that is written originally in French and read both the English and French versions, I would be very interested to hear your opinion on whether nuances are lost in the translation. I've often wondered if translations ever subtly change our experience of a story.

    • @fromsophiewithlovex
      @fromsophiewithlovex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Teresa I’ve tried this with English books translated in Greek and imo,something is definitely lost in translation.

    • @gracie9658
      @gracie9658 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly I think it depends on the translator and the job they do. I read The Hunger Games in French and then in English, and it's basically the same. I just spotted a few details that didn't make it to the translation Perhaps classics are more different, because YA is quite generic and the writing style isn't that complicated.

      I’m also from quebec and i am reading harry potter in english for the first time and it feels a bit different? I grew up with the movies in french and read the books once in french as a teen, and I guess since the name of some characters/places/spells/houses etc. are different, it feels a bit different, but I don’t think anything was lost in this case with the translations 😊 It does happen frequently though haha

    I love reading big fantasy books, since I tend to devour them. But I get so intimidated by big classics and historical fiction, other favorite genres of mine. I was thinking about picking it up for quite a while but once I saw it in your challenge I've just went for it. I've read both parts, took me almost two months but it was soooo worth it! Just like you said the beginning of the first one is so captivating and then it becomes a bit slower. I almost dnf-ed at that point but I pushed through it and it gets so much better! I failed on my big book that is still sitting on my shelf taunting me. I know I will love it I loved the first one but I tried to start it got stressed out by other books that I wanted to read more - had lots to read and just dropped it so fast! I did read a bunch of 500 plus page ones so I didn't fail on reading big ones in general just need to get into my epic books and give myself the time who knows I might get hooked right away. Classics can be hard to read fast - totally agree. And the second half of count of montre cristo is so good you just need to push through the first part and it starts to build and get amazing again. The ending is so satisfying.

The beginning was great but the second half seems to be slowing down a bit with an odd fantastical type thing going on. I’ll finish it at some point. Currently reading War Storm by Victoria Aveyard which is over 600 pages. I feel like I never read ‘small books’. They are always 350+ pages! When you were talking about how Emma felt stretched-out to 600 pages, that made me think of Nathan Garrison's "Veiled Empire". That book was 543 pages long excluding the Glossary, but its paperback edition was way too small and there were only like 260 words per page on its wordiest pages, so it was more like reading a 400-page book rather than 543.

    I think my personal reading challenge for 2019 will to be to finish series that I already own. I've read most of the first books and have the rest of the series and even if I like them I get distracted by the new shiny thing that comes out lol! So I really need to make an effort because I start to forget what the first book is about! Maybe every second book I read should be a continuation of a series. That might be going a little far but I'll count new books that come out as a part of a series when I've read the first one in there too. Maybe... lol I don't like to commit lol. Then I get stressed and don't read at all so it'll probably just be something for me to keep on my radar.

    Out of all those biggies I only (re)read The Stand this year (loved it again), but I'm super curious about Children of Time and The Fifth Season! My reading challenge for 2018 and the next few years is to dedicate each month to a certain country and read 1 book about this country and 1-2 books by authors from this country (the plot preverably taking place in that country as well). The goal is to broaden my horizon and get rid of (or confirm) some of the clichés in my head. So far so good, I even got some new favorite authors out of it! :-)

    I love big books! I'm not so much intimated with them, but I tend to "save" them to read when I have more time in my schedule. I hate it when it takes me longer than a week to read a book. Sometimes I'll start them and then set them aside, but I do try to finish. I've been reading It by Stephen King for over a year now! I just finished A Game of Thrones, took me about 6 months, but I did it! I really enjoyed it too. I do the Tome Topple readathon, that's usually about twice a year, and those weeks I really concentrate on reading as much as I can out of my books. This year I'm going to try to finish 20 big books. Over 500 pages is what counts for me as well. I'm actually reading one right now, and didn't realize it--Crazy Rich Asians is about 550 pages! Who knew? And its a pretty quick read so far, so I almost feel like I'm cheating, but I'm going to count it!

I've also read the game of thrones series, and I've recently started the century series by Ken Follett (serious Downton Abbey vibes. I'm loving it!)

    While I’m not sure if you’d love the rest of Ryria, I think you should give the rest of the series a shot. While it’s still a male dominated book, the princess (forget her name) and another female character become more important later on and are really great characters. And one of Sullivan’s best strengths as a writer is that he writes the full series before publishing and it really pays off. Big books used to scare me, but after reading David Copperfield and Les Misérables this year, not anymore. They cured me, especially the latter. I just tell myself that if I made it through the giant tome that is Les Misérables, I can read anything, no matter the size 😂
    Loved the video, nearly all of the books are on my tbr as well (except for Emma and Children of Time, I've already read those^^). Guess I might make the Broken Earth trilogy a priority for next year ☺

    I love big books. I just finished the third game of thrones book. I have also read The Stand. Like you, I liked the first part way better than the second part. I think it took me two months to read it. When I reread it I am going to read the shorter version.

    I definitely want to reread His Dark Materials now, it's been yeaaaars. And I've been super intrigued by Children of Time. My only goal for 2019 I think is to finally finish Notre Dame de Paris because I've been "reading" it since january lol

      Chad Daunhauer how did you like Jonathan strange and Mr Norrell? It’s so big and the words are so small. I’ve been staring at it for months. I’m thinking of listening to it or finding a different edition.

      Tara Cotton I listened to it as well and like the audio- I’m much more likely to finish a big book via audio. The book is fascinating and one of the best and most unique books I’ve ever read, but definitely not for everyone. It’s written as a historical non-fiction and therefore slow and filled with footnotes, but worth the read!

    • @Lunabear459
      @Lunabear459 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Victoria ok I’ll buy the audio book. One of my friends loaned it to me because she absolutely loved it but I can’t read books with a small font. Plus it’s huge so it’s so intimidating

    My challenge for 2019 is a classic a month, also to finish the name of the wind. I’m not usually scared of big books but that one is proving challenging! I have a smallish paperback edition and I think that’s the problem. It also got wet so it looks even thicker! Haha

    You might just encourage me to read the Philip Pullman trilogy again :) It's easier for me to read big books if they are on my phone/e-book reader. I don't feel the weight, they're easier to read and I'm not constantly reminded how freaking huge they are :P
