The Shape of Water is such a good movie and I really hope you watch it. Yes, it's a weird love story but the movie is so well done that I didn't even think about that. I've felt the exact same way with popular characters that I thought were flat or not very developed but other people talk like they know them so well and can assume all this stuff about them! It used to drive me crazy because I thought I was just missing something or reading the books and/or characters wrong some how, which doesn't make sense because my favorite parts of any book are characters with good characters, characterization, character relationships, and character development nearly always being what makes or breaks a book for me.
I've been thinking about this more sense you mentioned it in your reading vlog (love the reading vlogs!) and I think the reason I--and maybe you--don't connect with these characters or feel we know them well is because we're just reading them as they are on the page. What we see is what we get and if we fill in any blanks it's because the books have clearly implied what should go there. For other people I think they snag on a character trait that they like whether it be quirk, flaw, or maybe just what role they're playing in the story and their imagination races ahead of them to flesh out the type of character they're reading about and so they create a character that might not even be in the story but that they love. I think this happens and it works because a lot of these characters that are flat but readers seem to know intimately are just never fully developed so readers never come across anything about the characters to contradict their vision of them in their mind. A lot of these characters are really just archetypes with maybe a couple of specific or unique detailing but that's it; the super witty and wise-cracking con-man who's smarter than nearly everyone in the room always, the clearly-damaged-overly-serious-quiet-hyper-competant friend/lover, the one with the self-destructive tendencies, the one who is loud and confident only to mask some sort of inner pain, etc.
Readers very nearly create their own characters to move through the story, with the author nudging them gently into a specific direction to get them started. The problem is not that a reader who doesn't connect with the characters is missing something; the problem is that that reader is expecting the author to give them something that the author just doesn't give. From a marketing stand point it works because people clearly enjoy this, but from a stand point as to whether this is actually good writing; it isn't. It sucks and it needs to stop.
A couple of months ago I read "The Thief" by Megan Whalen Turner which follows a main character who falls into the "super-witty and wise-cracking con-man who's smarter than nearly everyone in the room always" trope but is actually way more than that and very well developed, and it felt like finally being able to take a proper drink of water after only taking sips for years. The book is absolutely fantastic as a whole and really put into perspective a lot of what I don't like about modern YA fantasy books, and the lack of properly developed characters is definitely one of my biggest issues, and unfortunately one I don't think is going to go away any time soon because it's obviously very lucrative right now.
Anyway, sorry this comment is so long! I just love over thinking things! But I am definitely going to check out Nevernight now because I always need more fantasy books with well developed characters in them!

I read the arc for the second book in The Winter's Promise series. I feel like a lot of your questions will be answered in book two. The book is still pretty slow paced but I ended up enjoying it. I'll be reading book three.
Also I'm glad that you pointed out that it's not a translation thing because I found the writing to be weird too. And assumed it was the translation.
Also that whole "He's falling in love with me" through me for a loop too. I was like... Girl. What are you talking about?! Lol

I also read the ARC for The Missing of Clairdelune and completely agree. I read it right after A Winter's Promise, so I think that helped me enjoy them even more, especially given the cliffhanger. Also, Ophelia not being constantly abused in the second installment helped a lot.

I didn't find the pace slow at all and I personally found the writing beautiful! What I really like about the characters is how they surprise me all the time. You never know who's good or evil because most of them are in between! You should try out book 2! 😁

I read the three books of the Passe Miroir serie, and the next two weren't worse or better, so there you go ! A bit more of world building though, so that might interest you, and in the third book we get a background for why the world is like that, and it made want to read the fourth to get the whole backstory.

I've got the second Murderbot book in my library TBR. I really enjoyed the first book. BTW Martha Wells wrote a fantasy novel called Death of the Necromancer that was pretty good. I read The Shape of Water. I thought it was an ok book. I gave it three stars. I like magic realism and I do see how that makes a big difference as to liking the story or not. I still haven't seen the movie. I think I may end up reading the Kristoff book. Your enthusiasm for the book and what you have said about it makes me think I would probably enjoy it a lot. The second book of the Mirror Visitor is definitely better! The author explains more things and the characters start to get more interesting. But I do understand your issues with the first book, most of the times Ophelia sneezed instead of speaking for herself, and this makes it hard to build a compelling plot.

I read "A Winter's promise" this month with the book club and yeah, definitely torn between liking it and hating it. Magic part was great but the writing, pacing, Ophelia and some plot twists were terrible. Also, Pole reminds me a lot of a poorly written telenovela. Is anyone sane? Is anyone not overly dramatic? Is anyone a decent person? Find out in the next episode of "Pole's court".

Also the romance... I wanted so much more, and I'm the one who always complains about romance in books. What happened here wasn't even "slow burn". It was basically nothing. At this moment I don't know whether or not they would/should end up together.

I liked a Winters Promise but I feel that the book should have been longer or maybe they should have cut out the beginning of the book where she is with her family. I am looking forward to the second book whenever that comes out :)

Well, it's a bit disappointing to hear that it wasnt the translation that was odd with A Winter's Promise.
I was really divided on this book also...I couldn't care that much about Ophelia. She didn't have much of a personality. I'm not convinced that I have the magic system +/- political? system down. It wasn't clear how it worked in either location.
And I agree that a declaration of "hey, you don't completely annoy me." is a pretty far cry from falling in love. Girl, slow your role.
I was also getting an asexual vibe from her. Not sure if it was intentional or just a result of her unremarkable personality.
I gave it 3 stars because I was just puzzled with what to do with this book. I'll look out for the next translation reviews. I could be convinced to continue...

Yes I read the translated version of A Winter’s Promise, i reviewed on Goodreads. It was sooooo slooowwww. I finally got into it in the last part of book. I have read the arc of the second book (translation). It was better. The main character finally gets some backbone but my god it took too long.

I watched the movie “The Shape of Water” and while the imagery was beautiful and the character of Zelda was just powerful and beautiful but there were things like her daily routine....did I need to know how she spent her bath time while the eggs boiled? The relationship was.....yea. Clerks II comes to mind.
Anyway, if you never watch the movie, I don’t think you’re missing anything. I can only imagine how this was written.

So it's the writing at the beginning of Fiancés de l'Hiver that's weird, not the translation. I read it in Italian (just because I understand and can read French but I couldn't be bothered) and I was so annoyed by some lexical choices in the first chapters. Anyway it's an interesting series, I'm looking forward to read the rest, the second book has just been transtated. [Btw, I laughed so hard when you said "oooh, déclaration d'amour", I thought the same when I read that part]

This is unrelated to books but you really remind me of two actresses. One is Italian actress Chabeli Sastre Gonzalez and the second is Brazilian actress Perola Faria.

Wow I read A Winter's Promise earlier this year and I thought the writing was soooo weird. I really put it all down to it being a translated work but seems like its an issue that transends language lmao. I have no idea whether to continue the series or not as they get translated... we shall see.

I've read La passe-miroir in french (I'm french so...), the three first books, and it doesn't really improve. I really like the first one but I think if I reread it now I wouldn't like it as much. The world could be cool, but the plot and mostly the romance in the third book don't make sens at all. I don't think I'm gonna pick up the fourth one when it came out, and frankly they are way better books out there, so I'm gonna focus on reading what I really want to read. Also I don't understand why people keep comparing this to Harry Potter (both of the heroes have glasses ?).

Do you have any really good French to English translated book recommendations? I was going to read A Winters Promise but now I'm thinking maybe that's not a good idea. Most of the translated books I read are Swedish to English and I'm trying to branch out. I read all genres though.

Hey Emily! Always love your wrap ups! But I was wondering, would you recommend The Silent Patient to someone who doesn’t usually read thrillers? It seems interesting. Also, I have to recommend See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt. It’s freaking crazy!!!! It’s about Lizzie Borden, who in the late 1800s murdered her whole family and got away with it. Literally google Lizzie Borden, look at her picture, and you can see in her eyes that she’s insane. And the author doesn’t leave out ANY details. It’s just..wow. It’s good, but I cringe at certain details. I highly recommend for you, plus, there’s not really any romance! There’s like this one scene, but then it’s over. And the parents of course are married, but they kinda hate each other. I hope you try it!😊😊

Oh nooooo~ I still feel like I am the unpopular opinion on Kristoff's books. I just don't think he and I gel as a author/reader. I did read all of Nevernight and most of Godsgrave, so it's not just the fact that I get stuck. In fact I liked the beginning more than the end. I just did not like them and have yet to find my peoples... I think the book gives "I'm better than you" vibes at me or something. Pompous? I have no idea, but I get angry as I read his writing hahaha~

I liked it, maybe not as much as others but I thought it started strong and then slowed down a bit for me. It's technically a book in 5 parts and the first 1-2 are really good. Worth the read!
