I worked for an EB business for many years. On an individual level, each of them is a decent, humane person, but when they flip into brethren mode, they become automatons, bereft of logic and able only to parrot certain sentences they’ve been programmed by their cult leaders to spew out.
It’s so pathetic and sad. Their leaders should be in prison for mass abuse.

As a BT engineer, I was one of the few “Non Brethren” to enter the hall building. They had a payphone.
It was a square building with a central amphitheatre going down to a central circular carpeted plinth with a high stool/chair and microphone stand. Around the outside of amphitheatre was a corridor with doors or toilets in each corner and all around the four walls were several rows of coat hooks.
    It’s now a small estate of housing/flats.

Rebecca I have just read your book. It must be stressed, as you do in your book, that the exclusive sects have nothing to do with the Open Brethren, and neither have they anything to do, in terms of relationships within families and with the outside world, with the Darbyite assemblies that I have encountered in France (with whom they are often compared). Ther latter, despite usually) not collaborating with non-Brethren denominations, are characterised by warmth and hospitality towards outsiders and kindness and friendliness towards outsiders.
By the way, your book is a deeply moving protrait of your father, and one of the most beautiful accounts of a father -daughter relationship I have ever read. When you referred to your father's encounter with CS Lewis's lectures and writing, and the choice he faced between embracing Lewis's God and the Exclusives' God, I couldn't help wishing that he had chosen the former. The story might well have had a very different ending.

I beg to differ. My mother was excommunicated from the EB church and joined the OB, yet she still maintained the exclusive mindset and I suffered for it as a result.

The problem with the "Open Brethren" is that each assembly is completely autonomous, so, when my daughter was sexually assaulted by one of the men who did the children's work, there was no national organisation that could be appealed to. The case went to Crown Court, our complaint and that of another young woman. During the trial, the Gospel Hall presented false evidence in the form of an attendance register which had been doctored to make it look as though my daughter had continued attending after the incident took place. They all closed wagons around the perpetrator, and lied in court. Every time I walk past that Gospel Hall now I wish it was closed. The man in question was found guilty in the case of the other young woman but not guilty for our accusation, even though the man in question had been round to our house to give an abject apology as "his lust had got the better of him" - in his words. Self righteous criminals.

I started out with an independent group (an independent table). Two years later, I joined the exclusive brethren, a closed group. There was hardship, to be sure, and a lot of what I see in this film was not practiced among these exclusives. About eight years later I moved away and left the group and I slowly drifted towards the open brethren. Now, today, I live in Taiwan with my Taiwanese wife, and I am a member of a bilingual church. I am relatively happy, but I don't break bread with them; I'm not sure why, I just don't.

I was adopted into a similar cult, the evangelical pentecostalists, almost identical behaviour, rules & attitudes, same dowdy dress sense, no TV, newspapers, no friends outside the sect, I left at 16 & they locked me out of the house on sundays . Very sadistic narcissistic holier than thou prudes, proud as peacocks, no sense of humour or laughter, plenty of pain & tears, 40 yrs on I still have CPTSD & you never forget this experience it haunts you for life , thankfully these narcissistic sects & cults have largely gone out of fashion or been named & shamed now

I belonged to the exclusives and, later, the open brethren. I guess I would be one of those fellows that would blow the lid right off the pot, so to speak. Nobody comes between me and my wife, or my children. I don't care if you are God or devil. My Lord gave me a spiritual sense of smell and, I may not be able to put my finger on the exact verse right away, but that won't stop me from taking charge of what I know to be a miscarriage of biblical truth!!!

An update of how these particular ones are doing in 2021 would be interesting. I know the group seem to be quite big in Australia now too. They were never an easy group - I remember my mother telling me about them in the 1960s or 70s. Any group which requires people to be apart is going to have issues over shunning whether it be the Amish or US FLDS or Scientology - you are with us or against us they think. They are all wrong of course... there is no God and things like scientology are totally wrong too.

God's word clearly says his true worshippers will worship not in any building but in Spirit & in truth. These people are in a very bad situation. Charles H Spurgeon “Plymouth Brethren have no feeling wherever their principles are concerned. I know indeed of no sect or denomination so utterly devoid of kindness of heart. It is the most selfish religious system with which I am acquainted. It is entirely wrapped up in itself”. Charles H Spurgeon “The Darby Brethren” June 1869

He had the utmost respect for the Open Brethren, spoke highly of George Muller and emphasised that he was exempting them from his criticism of the Exclusive schism fronted by Darby. Since Spurgeon's days, the Raven-Taylor group have got more and more cultic. Fair to say they don't represent all the Exclusive Brethren and are one of a number of parties. Darby himself would be disgusted at how the Taylorites ended up.Despite their cosmetic changes to maintain their charitable status, not one of their extra-Biblict edicts declared by their successive leaders who they apportion Pope like status to, has been revoked.

@@bloodboughtbigphilr8266 I was 16 when I joined the Open Brethren.(1970). I remember how they would insist on women having a head covering. At that time the mini-skirt was in fashion. Some of those Brethren girls would wear the shortest skirts. I could not see the point in a woman having her head covered when the rest of her body was not covered.

It's following what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 about women and head coverings, the covering being taken to be headwear of some sort. However, often overlooked that Paul said 'we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God' (v16, NKJV). It was also with reference to women 'praying and prophesying' i.e. taking an audible part in the assembly gathering which a lot of the Open Brethren still do not permit. The 'wide Open' section which I would identify with have eased up on this issue considerably since what was the case circa 1970.

    • @roberteaston6413
      @roberteaston6413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bloodboughtbigphilr8266 The Brethren that I had associated with had elders that, in some cases, had wives that had shorter hair than their husbands. It is pointless for a woman to wear a head covering if she is immodestly dressed or has has hair shorter than their husbands. Unisex is unBiblical; some would even say that it is an abomination. In Canada evangelical Christians are greatly influenced by Americans. That is a double edged sword. Some of the best preachers in Canada are Americans or Canadians taught by Americans. The downside is that a lot of cults and heretical churches were brought in by Americans. The wild card is African immigration to Canada. Many of these African immigrants are devout Christians. African Christians may be the salvation of Canada.

In my reading of the passage, it is the women 'shorn or shaved' i.e. short haired that the head covering was intended as a provision for if considered a shameful thing. Doesn't seem to be for all saved women everywhere at all times and for the assembly to decide on. Scripture is much more prescriptive about immodest clothing drawing attention to body parts. Incongruous indeed having a hat or headscarf on while adorning a short skirt or skimpy shorts.

Is this cult still in existence in 2021? My former boss belonged to what she called a Plymouth Brethren Chapel in the USA, but she wasn’t always proselytizing, acting or dressing weird, living in a compound...She lived in a large NYC upscale co-op, worked in a secular job as an administrative assistant, was married to non-religious Jewish man. They had two children who were normal, attended a private liberal academy, etc. Perhaps there was no relation to these Brethren.
