  • FULL documentary. Families torn apart. Wives ordered to leave their husbands. Children separated from their parents. And all in the name of God. The Exclusive Brethren have long been revered as a Christian congregation of simple, God-fearing folk. But ever since their leader, the Man of God, ordered them to withdraw from society and stop socialising with people outside the movement, concerns about the group have been growing. In this moving, personal documentary, ex-members tell their story. Aired on Four Corners in 2006.

The effects of this cult on my family has taken three generations to overcome. My uncle killed himself and my mother, who was excommunicated with a curse, still struggles to understand her experience. It is a disgrace they are able to run their own schools.

A friend of mine left the Brethren Church. His Parents were high up in the church at the time however they tried very hard to get him back, offering him a job, brand new car and house, he had to divorce his wife if he took up the offer. The sad part is after 15 years he returned to the Brethren church and divorced his wife.

I remember, in my early twenties, working with a young woman who was from the Brethren faith. She seemed totally isolated from society. She could not eat her lunch with her co-workers so she would get in her car and eat away from everyone. I remember she had a sadness about her. I asked her about her situation but she would not divulge any information. We were about the same age and I sensed that she was utterly miserable. I remember feeling a sense of hopelessness because I had no idea, at the time, how to help her. So sad.

Thank you for the update. I'm an evangelical Christian who recently started working for an Exclusive Brethren company. They have treated me very, very well. Yet, I find I perceive a distance in them in a social sense which is weird. They also never speak of the Lord.

I have worked for a brethren company for many years. I am a strong follower of Christ who studies Scripture daily. I remember going to school with a couple of Exclusive Brethren kids. The first time was primary school and what really sticks out in my mind is that he went home everyday for lunch. One day the whole school went on a field trip his mum came with us he had sat by himself and had lunch with her, The next time was Intermediate the boy was in my class for a while and learnt a lot from him about the Exclusive Brethren. He ended up leaving an going to an all Exclusive Brethren school.

The concept of separation is definitely Biblical. Separation from evil and worldly ways is important for Christians, but if we examine how Jesus separated himself that didn't include not eating with sinners. He didn't sin with them, but he didn't isolate himself from them either. That's one of the problems of taking a Biblical doctrine or principle and taking it to an extreme at the expense of other aspects of scripture.

There's a Plymouth Brethren building near where I live in a small village in Oxfordshire, England. Half the building is under ground. A contractor who did some work in the place said he saw every tool under the sun, vast amounts of equipment and generators, as if they are planning to rebuild after the end of the world. Very secretive place, big fence around it and cameras everywhere (I've walked the dog passed it a few times). I sometimes see the woman around the village walking around with them blue scarves on their head. They're apparently trying to buy up all the houses close to this building

Our home was just purchased by a young bretheren couple. It was a large home which was only 13 years old & very expensive. They are totally gutting it & it will be 4 months before they move in. Only 1 is working & his job would not pay for the home nor renovations. The husband told us his church mates would all be doing the renos & that they would have no mortgage. He & his wife are 27. In this instance their religion is working for them. A lot of their church fellows are purchasing houses in our suburb.

So much for being a caring community. In 1921 my great Grandmother was married to a brethren man and they were married in their church and she converted, however, as he was married before, his two daughters would not allow him to stay with his new wife. They forced him to leave her shortly after the marriage, as a result they that left my great Grandmother with no husband and she has to fend for herself and her family. To the day she died my great Grandmother stayed married to him as there was never a divorce. What a disgraceful religion even in those days. This all happened in Wishaw Scotland.

Keri Masse So someone who disagrees with you must be a member of the EC? It must be nice to be so self-righteous, so sure of your commitments that you must vilify and insist on pathological cognitive faculties to different view points. Joy has been running a campaign against the EC for decades. The EC has replied to most of her criticisms - a quick internet search will confirm this - now I do not know who is telling the truth (nor do you) but to insist that a woman who has make a career attacking the EC is telling the whole truth is insane. The EC have a community here in the UK and lose just two people a year out of a group of 15000. They cannot be all bad. Australia is so secular that it is hostile to any form of religious belief that is not gutted of any realist theology. A close religious community that keeps it self to it self has to be destroyed - Australia cannot tolerant views different from the mainstream.

I'm not even sure that today my mom would characterize her upbringing as cultish, though. Most likely just very, very strict. There were a couple of things that marked it as cult-like but not enough, I think, to make the cut. Anyway, that was 50 years ago, and the PB-open church my grandparents are in now doesn't make a single check on the list.

The word 'exclusive' covers many brethren groups that are fundamentally 'orthodox' in their beliefs and practices but accept the exclusive label to distinguish them from their Open Brethren that grew up from a division in 1848. The term Exclusive Brethren has come to signify those of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church who are neither a church nor are they christian. They should never be confused with the brethren groups that owe their existence to the brethren of earlier days like Wigram.Darby, Müller and Kelly.. The present opprobrium should rest firmly on the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

This is such a tragedy. My heart aches for those beautiful ex-members who have left this cult. It is NOT Christian. Its practices bear absolutely NO resemblance to Christ. It's a travesty what these type of imposter groups do to the cause of Christ.

@@bigbowlowrong4694 This is one wacky cult.
Stopping people from seeing their own children and families because they leave the religion is not something Christ would approve of.
Just because they leave the brethren doesn’t mean that they have left God. They can still join another christian group.
The brethren teach false doctrines and for that reason alone there is every reason to leave them. They don’t accurately teach what the bible teaches.
If it’s a false religion and they stop people seeing their family through blackmail and coercion for leaving what is a false religion, then how can Christ approve of that?
They might accept Christ, but that doesn’t mean that he accepts them

@@cultfiction3865 Dont listen to this video and do some historical research. This video s talking about the "Plymouth brethren christian church" most Plymouth brethren (they don't call themselves that) are a number of independent congregations that all share similar beliefs this includes the exclusive brethren. The "Plymouth brethren christian church" is a cult and places its leaders at a pope like status, with many harmful doctrines. The "Plymouth brethren christian church" is the only branch of the exclusive brethren movement that calls itself "Plymouth brethren" its also the only branch that subscribes to the strange beliefs concerning there leaders. Most plynouth brethren (many call themselves "gospel hall assemblies") are just strict congregationalist conservative Christians that wish nothing more then to be associated with the so called "Plymouth brethren christian church".
I'm not brethren but I wanted to write this to clear up misinformation about the use of the term "exclusive brethren".

"The term Exclusive Brethren is most commonly used in the media to describe one separatist group known as Taylor-Hales Brethren, who now call themselves the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC). The majority of Christians known as Exclusive Brethren are not connected with the Taylor-Hales group, who are known for their extreme interpretation of separation from evil and their belief of what constitutes fellowship. In their view, fellowship includes dining out, business and professional partnerships, membership of clubs, etc., rather than just the act of Communion (Lord's Supper), so these activities are done only with other members.
The group called the Raven Brethren (named for prominent Exclusive leader F.E. Raven) seceded from the Raven-Taylor-Hales group and are less strict and isolationist. Exclusive Brethren groups who are not affiliated with PBCC prefer being referred to as Closed rather than Exclusive brethren to avoid any connection with these more strident groups. "

I am 'brethren', not belonging to Exclusive or Open(In Korea, brethren is just brethren). It's pity that you have experienced that kind of rudeness. If they had heart of Jesus Christ, they wouldn't do it. I believe that the thing they did to the poor boy is just what Pharasees have done.
I really doubt whether they are born-again christian. In my eyes, they are just religious people without eternal life.

The Bible is clear - Accept a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. What happened in the exclusives is that they separated themselves so much from other Christians, they started basically inter breeding. Children were brought into the system and steeped in their teaching. The scriptures came almost second nature to them and they could argue and preach the gospel and doctrine from a very young age. They were child baptised which is a waste of time and gives false assurance. They participated in the 'breaking of bread' service - AND THEY WERE NOT EVEN CONVERTED TO CHRIST. They were easily led astray by false teachers who came into the 'system'. They were mixed up with wine bibbing, so called Christian liberty when they basically lived immoral lives and called it the liberty of grace. Is it any wonder it has been exposed as a 'cult'?
Like all previously Christian denominations, if they repent towards God and return to the first teachings when the Brethren came to be, stop following the words and teachings of the false teachers and get back to the Bible and the Lord Jesus Christ alone, then God could and can take up individuals from this system and use them for His glory.
If not, then there is the danger of hearing the words of the Lord Jesus Christ 'Depart from me, I never knew you'.

May you be blessed to know Jesus for yourself. I was born into a black body, and I have experienced rejection and hatred as a consequence. But I was never deceived into thinking that it was God's Will that this should happen. And when I met Jesus on Bilgola Plateau, I was overcome with His love and understanding.
Your hatred is misplaced. Diseases are the result of evil. God gave men the power to make their own choices, and they choose to do evil. But God comforts those who choose Him. Bless you
