In the 21st century, Dr. Light began building X, a robot that could think, feel, and act on its own - the first, and potentially, the most dangerous of his kind. Dr. Light then sealed X away in a capsule that would test his ethical and moral programming to ensure he could distinguish right from wrong, but it would take at least 30 years, outliving Dr. Light himself.
A hundred years later, the capsule is discovered by Dr. Cain, who promptly activates X and with his help, begins developing Reploids based on both Dr. Light's designs and assorted zoo animals. These reploids, all naturally armed to the teeth, become increasingly violent and are classified as Mavericks. With a potential revolution on their hands, the human government puts together the Maverick Hunter task force lead by the first and finest of the Reploids, Sigma.
Sigma and his Elite Hunter Unit uncover yet another capsule that contained Zero, Dr. Wily's rival to X. Sigma narrowly defeated Zero, but had also unwittingly released a Maverick virus that had been brewing in the capsule, which infects Sigma and inexplicably reverses Zero's Maverick programming. Now a Maverick himself, Sigma corrupts his lieutenants, declares Reploid Independence, and wages an all-out war against his human masters. Now it's up X and Zero - but mostly X - to defeat the robot masters in specific order, collect upgrades carefully scattered along the way by the late Dr. Light, and put down Sigma and his robot rebellion for good.

"But mostly X" yeah for the first three games, then Zero stole the spotlight in X's own series and then got his own series.
You also have to freaking UNLOCK X - the "main" character - in X7
Actually, Zero was supposed to be the main character from the beginning. Capcom forced the creator to make X since Zero didn't resemble the original Megaman.

He's a bloodthirsty God of Destruction. All I did was upgrade him to draw out all his power! All right, Omega...... or should I say "Original Zero"! Time to wake this pitiful fake from a century-long deam!
There is one mistake: The W virus wasn't in the capsule but in Zero's energy crystal. During the fight, when Zero immobilized Sigma but suddenly Zero bugged for a second thanks to the virus and Sigma punched his energy crystal, transferring the virus to him, in which it evolved to the Sigma virus. This is portrayed in one of the cut scenes in Megaman X4.
I've read somewhere that the virus was not in Zero and in the capsule, therefore he hadn't been infected until Sigma damaged him, and the infection cured him of his madness. The W headaches were the infection taking place. You see, Zero's real purpose was to be the villain of the bad ending of X5 and to become that, he needed to be fully infected (hence the whole space colony virus crash plot) Normal good guy Zero has enough virus to not be a loose cannon mindless murderer, but not enough to become a villain focused on a programmed rivalry.
More than just one mistake. Sigma did not unwittingly defeated Zero he BARELY did so and almost didn't live to tell the tale.

I'm pretty sure the virus was transferred from zero to sigma during their battle, which explains why zero became "good" and sigma went maverick. Also the robot masters became maverick because of sigma, not before. The maverick hunters existed before this time and even included the eight original robot masters.
Maverick Hunters preexisted Sigma's rebellion, yet Mavericks didn't exist until Sigma's rebellion? Run that by me again.

Brecht Mombaerts He is famous because of the awesome series that spawned before youtube on newgrounds. He does voice act, but calling the silly voices he does on his animations voice acting is an insult to his actual ability, as he has been a voice actor in some videogames.

I always thought Zero passed the virus onto Sigma directly during their fight.
From what I understand Zero was already up and ripping people a new asshole before Sigma was even called in to deal with him. Zero took an arm off him and Sigma smashed his head crystal in and at some point during all that mess that's when the virus was transferred.
It should also be noted that it gets more complicated when you consider not all Mavericks are infected. Vile, for instance, is just a destructive asshole. :P

Next, Megaman Zero Lore!
That would be spoiling the X series.
Not really. Zero starts about 100 years after X, and is mostly standalone in terms of plot. Speaking of plot, there isn't really an ending to spoil in the X series, as it never officially ended and, with the exception of X8, Sigma did whatever it is that's wrong.

EquinoxGX true x8 didnt leave many answers but left even more questions sigma seems to them has finally died but im not to sure on that but there was moments where the charecters had there own thoughts when you beat the game and there was also the fact that axel had a corrupted fragment in his gem piece above helmet
Thinh Nguyen X5 was originally intended to be the ending, but Capcom announced and started on the continuation of the series before alerting many of the core players of the project responsible for making it good. Because of the extra games, the original story for the Zero series--as well as the original design for that iteration--had to be altered to what it is today.
I honestly can't stop laughing at seeing Sigma puke his guts out and that angry look afterwards that just says "That's it, time to go maverick and betray the humans!"

Mostly X? Everybody plays Zero!
Yeah but not in X1, X2, Most of X6, and a large portion of X Command Mission due to the game being started on an SNES and Zero being dead or missing on others.
I like more X then Zero.

BruglarFTW I still don't buy that. Really the ONLY problem I have with that is that it's 3 WEEKS later in X6, when at the end of X5, it said 3 YEARS later. If they had kept 3 YEARS, i wouldn't question it. But, you just got blown in half, then got a hole blown through you. You're in pieces, out of energy, in a hidden location where nobody can find you, and you don't have any parts compatible with your current body laying around? And it only takes you 3 weeks to patch up that hole in your chest, and build a new left arm, legs, and get a new saber? I call shenanigans. I actually buy into that Gate repaired him instead. Sounds more logical to me.
***** Years later, I found out that Zero was actually rescued by the same manner as X in the X ending of X5. Remember during the X ending of X5 (True Ending)? X was also blown in half and his state was as bad as Zero after the explosion. Dr. Light Ghost saved X. Now, back to X6 story. The first thing you paid was his reasons of repairing himself. It's actually half true but if you go to Infinity Mijinion stage and use Zero to take the armor part for X, there is actually a conservation between Zero and Dr. Light that questioned about who saved him because like you said, there is no way he would be alive at that point. Zero himself stated roughly the same thing you said but in shorter manner. My speculation would be that Dr. Wily ghost saved Zero. Damn, it's actually THIS LONG to find out about it since I rescued Zero extremely early in X6 and wanted to play 100% as Zero (Which it was actually more of a Zero game rather than X because the level Design was basically Zero oriented rather than X.)
Conclusion:
It was Zero's fault for all the shits.
I did a pretty good job at it too.

Games I would love to see from the Mega Man series:
Mega Man 11 - A lot of people say they want a tie in to the X series but then they would have to end the classic series so fuck that.
A Mega Man Classic/X tie in game - Don't make it a 12,13,14 game, just make a crossover that explains the gap in time.
Mega Man X9 - What in the shit happened to Axl? I need to find out!
Mega Man Zero 5 - I know zero is dead and was stored in the biometal along with everyone else but a cool game idea would be if Ciel had to go around collecting their data first through stages and what not. She has the long hair and whatever so put on some armor and bang, the new Zero!
Mega Man ZX3 - This one I could live without, but a link between this and Legends would be cool. In the end of ZXA, Thomas says "This world needs to be reset". I believe he succeeds at his goal and hence why the Legends series connects to this.
Mega Man Legends 3 - This one doesn't need a reason.
Mega Man Battle Network 7 - Possibly a story about Lan Hikari's son, Patch.
Mega Man Star Force 4 - I just want to see this game happen :)

I always thought it was funny how Dr. Light told X through one of the capsules that he "hoped the world would allow him to choose a peaceful (path in life.)" He literally has an arm cannon. An ARM CANNON. What peaceful application could he possibly have?

Also, you're missing the point. Fighting isn't peaceful. Even if you're fighting for a good cause (and he was), it's still fighting. Dr. Light admitted himself that X wasn't peaceful later in the message: "I hoped the world would allow you to choose a peaceful path, but it seems you are destined to fight." Light himself acknowledges that those two things are opposites.

It pisses me off that only Zero was in UMVC3 and in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but not X......but atleast he was in Project X Zone for the first time.
Well, X does appear in UMVC3 as a DLC skin for Zero.
Yeah but we all know X doesn't use the Saber like Zero does. Capcom should've obviously known what X's move set could have been like.
X uses the Saber in X3 and X6, although he's not as skilled as Zero.

Megaman Lore = Some Japanese guys watched Popeye and Bettyboop, made Astro Boy, then decades later a Japanese guy that liked Astro Boy and watched Tron, got an idea to combine the two. The end. Megaman is Popeye and Betty Boop's Tron baby. AKA Swee'Pea grown up in Tron Cos-play.

Robot masters is an older name that was used for... I believe the Classic Mega Man games, even if this is Mega man *X*, it can still be used as a valid (and better) name instead of using a Fish's name for all the Robot Masters.

Because it the games came out in the early 90s and the story had already been done to death post Terminator 1. I like it for the most part except for evil robot gas AIDs turning Sigma evil and Zero good is kinda stupid and confusing.
Wasn't Protoman the first capable of thoughts and emotions? Even in Megaman 9 the robots seem to fear being scrapped (the robo-equivalent of death) and let Wily "repair" them to elongate their usefulness. Maybe I'm just stupid.@_@
Well the thing is that X is the first one that can go against programming. The original series had characters that thought and felt emotions and stuff, but they still had to abide by what they were programmed to do.
Like edward18517 said, the classic robots were limited by their programming, only imitating free will. X had no mental limitations, being a truly living robot.
Protoman was also a fluke, an untested loose cannon that wasn't supposed to have free will. Maybe that inspired Light to properly design a free will robot.

Will all honesty, Zero was originally designed to be megamanX. Until some members on the development team thought Zero didn't look enough like the original megaman from the classic NES series. So Zero become his own character and the megamanX, as you now him today, was born.

Just sayin but in Megaman Zero ( which happens hundreds of years after Megaman X ) Megaman is the bad guy and it's up to zero to save his shits again. Also, you could call Zero in X3 and he was pretty goddamn too strong

the PSP Remake Maverick Hunter X fixed that and when Sigma got the virus he's starting to go evil and killed one some important dude rip X's arm and X countered him by using SHINING FINGAAAAAH!!! to his face and got his Scar in the process....have fun

Right when I saw the title, I knew that Egoraptor would voice this.
Sigma wasnt acctually the fist reploid. Although this is stated in some of the older American and english sources, it's simply a translation error. The original text just states that sigma was advertised as being the "number 1" reploid when he was introduced to the public.
Best megaman game ever made. PERIOD. They couldn't out perfect this game if they tried to, it's such a classic and masterpiece even to this day that I couldn't imagine my childhood without it

I would say not fully accurate. The Zero Virus didn't release like a gas (it's not a physical virus, it's a computer virus), in X4 cutscene, it's implied when Sigma punched Zero in the forehead to defeat him, that that's when the virus transferred, which is why Zero didn't have it anymore
