  • A pair of veteran EMD standard cabs hammer out of Collinwood after a fuel up and crew change. Gotta love the sound of raw power.

CSX spent a bundle but did cure the ailments of the SD-50's.

The SD-50 Southern Pacific are my babies. Filthy dirty loud from 1992. They got the best acceleration sound.

The SD40. I've seen and worked with so many of them at work it's not even funny. . I forget the reason why they do that generator issues if i recall correctly i forgot what the mechanic told me. The SD40's are old and wheel slip modules and other parts are scarce so i'm surprised somebody hasn't designed new modules and other parts to keep the locomotives in prime service.

Would have been more interesting to see hydraulic transmissions on US locomotives. Don't need to hear all the reasons why they didn't. I know what people will say. Just love the mechanical aspects and purity, don't want to hear the financial reasons.

Great sound! But I see the SD40-2 is surging. It happened to one of my cars once because of a bad alternator belt, not the alternator itself. This could be suffering from a bad alternator or some other electrical issue.

It also is smoking a bit more than they normally do. It might be due to the surging, because they will smoke when the throttle is increased at higher power levels (about notch 4 or 5 I think).

@Donald Norfleet slipping turbo clutch, or electrical issues causing the governor to slowly cycle between min. and max field.

@@rearspeaker6364 The 645 engines do not have turbo clutches. They are turbo over roots-blown engines. It's more than likely a governor issue. Very common on older GM/EMD two-stroke diesels.

Seems like that the second loco has a pulsating engine load (puffs of smoke) - why is that?

    • @pokeyrailfanning

Many reasons, bad maintenance, something is going bad (turbo, alternator, cylinder etc…) or the engine might not be tuned correctly which causes less fuel to be burned and it spits it out the exhaust as smoke

Not anywhere close to run 8 and the SD40 is not loading properly so it will shut down eventually.
