The Sounds of an SD 40-2 Switching a Cut of Cars
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 ก.พ. 2023
- Ride in the cab of our EMD SD 40-2 and listen to the delightful sounds of
the engine ramping as we move a cut of cars.
This locomotive is being controlled by an operator holding a remote
control box. The remote system we have here is made by Control Chief.
Most railroads use Locotrol made by GE Transportation which is now
Wabtec.

Greatest Diesel Locomotive ever built. It's like the b 52 of locos still works and still in service
Unfortunately a whole bunch of SD40 variants are going to be scrapped due to new enviromental requirements of being Tier 3 or 4 emission standards capable - it has startd with G&W.
You will have no arguments with me there Andrew. Although
I'm partial to the SD 38-2 simply because that was what I learned
how to run loco on, but not too many of them left. Lot's of
40-2's still out there and doing their thing. They were a very
popular loco in their day. This one was built as an SD 40 for SP
back in May 1966. it has a unique history being rented to CSX and
CP, it's been all over USA and Canada. Thanks so much for
watching tonight my friend.
Yes sir!
@@ccrx6700 Dave, SD 40-2 is ear candy, love listening to it
@@ccrx6700 The SD40-2 is personally my favorite road switcher / freight engine. A lot of these units have been rebuilt into SD30 ECO, simply receiving a "heart transplant" if you will. These SD30 ECO's have been given the newest 710 series prime mover that's Tier 4 compliant. My favorite were the Burlington Northern SD40-2's, painted in Cascade Green with black roofs. (Pre BNSF) When I lived out west decades ago, I'd see these units on a seemingly daily basis, just like how the Amtrak F40PH's were always around. I have a lot of these SD40-2 units in HO scale, including some Norfolk Southern painted ones. Up to now, I didn't know you folks at Cumberland Mine had some of these. I thought you folks were strictly an SD38-2 railroad.
The SD40-2 is the greatest railroad locomotive ever made!
It sure was a popular one for a lot of RRs back in it's day. A lot
still in use out there too. VEry much appreciate your riding
along and for writing in my friend.
@@ccrx6700 what’s the best locomotive you’ve used?
This is where it's at. The most musical diesel engine ever built, in the best locomotive ever built. Need to loop this and use it for ASMR.
Very glad you enjoyed the show silicon212. We really appreciate
your taking the time to watch and write in with the nice comment

Love that EMD sound! Thanks Dave!
Your welcome Fred and yes sir it is a delightful sound indeed.
Glad you could stop by to listen to the switching my friend.
AH, Dave, the sound coming from that SD40-2 is as sweet as a newborn baby crying. Love it!
Very glad you enjoyed the show Curt. We certainly do appreciate your
taking the time to watch and ride along today my friend.
Delightlful is an understatement!
Just wonderful.
Thanks Dave.
Your very welcome, glad to hear you enjoyed tonight's presentation.
It's always a pleasure to have you visit with us and hear from
you my friend.
Having grown up in the era of F7. GP9. SW1200 then moving up to the GP38 SD40-2 and now SD70s. Pure and simple the EMD just has that reliable and predictable sound that says we're ready to go to work and you know what to expect. The mid to late 1970s had some brutal winters and the SD40-2 carried the Milwaukee Road through those tough times. I do agree the SD38 has its place and we could catch some on the CNW on Chicago transfer runs. Favorites though were EJ&E climbing out of Kirk yard in Gary IN usually 3 on a train loaded with steel. Beams, coils, plate, scrap plus chemicals and cement. With their Pyle National rotating red light they'd step into it and get the show moving increasing speed even as they moved uphill. The other owner were the Duluth Mesabi and Iron Range units usually waxed and gleaming hauling those old friction bearing ore jennies at lower speeds when they were new 30+ years ago. Today they pull newer cars on roller bearing trucks but the ranks are thinning but there is still something mesmerizing about those taconite pellets shaking on the walkways and steps as EMDs best still keeps on delivering
Thanks Paul for sharing some of your RR history experiences.
That was some real railroading back in the day. Very much
appreciate your taking the time to ride along and write in
my friend. Glad it brought back some good memories for you.
Here in Texas,Southern Pacific owned 6 SD38-2's & 26 SD39-2's that only were here for rock train service. They had "Houston" imprinted on the cabs.It seems that they were the only railroad that equipped those units with dynamic braking and actually used them as mainline units at that. The SD38-2's much like the GP38-2's were meant to be heavy duty switchers at the most.On top of this, the SD38-2's were all non dynamic units. After the Union Pacific takeover the SD39-2's seemingly just disappeared and any of the SD38-2's were immediately converted into full body slugs and paired with SD40-2's.Some of these now slug units were also formerly CNW.On the slug units they even removed the "blisters" where the dynamic cooling fans were.
There's a grain silo yard not that far away from me that uses two SD38-2's which are now CEFX units.Originally both of them were Conrail and then Norfolk Southern.
Possibly the GOAT of all diesel engines. John, Michigan
Lot's of old SD40-2 are still in service around the country
performing switching operations. Very much appreciate your
visiting with us John and writing in.
thanks dave i put my headphones on and cranked them up ! have a great day dave !
Glad you enjoyed David. Appreciate your taking the time to watch today's video my friend.
You are absolutely right Andrew Hill SD 40s were the best diesel locomotive ever built in history. They were the workhorses of America for over 50 years in railroad still across America still use them. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes sir GMCGUY, these were some of the best locos ever built. Thank you so much for choosing to visit with us and check out the video. May you have a most blessed day my friend.
My favorite locomotive of all time 🤩
It was a favorite of many RR's when it came out, a real workhorse
and still many of them out there, however most are relegated
to switching services on the big RR's. Very much appreciate
your dropping by and taking in the show my friend.
Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed this. Locomotive sounds like a beast
Your welcome DK and glad you enjoyed the sounds. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the video. May you have a very good day my friend.
The power of those Locos are unreal.
This one has 3,000 HP. A baby compared to the newer SD's which
are around 44 to 4500 HP. Always appreciate your paying us
a visit and writing in my friend.
Think about it: swap the "are" for "is" and avoid triggering Anglophones. Besides, V-12 4-stroke GEs are at 4400 hp, vice these V-16 2-strokes.
@@jacquesblaque7728 The 4400 hp GE 7FDL-16 is a 16 cylinder engine. The EMD 16-710G3C makes 4300-4500 hp

Things like a "cut" of cars. Makes perfect sense but I never knew what it was called. Thanks Dave!
Your very welcome Fireball. Thank you so much for riding along

The Sd40-2s are my alltime favorite locomotives. They are the best looking and most reliable locomotives ever made. I love the way they sound. They looked great in the Burlington Northern Railroad paint schemes of Cascade Green and Black. Back in the day they were also very common on the coal trains in Wyoming hauling coal out of the Powder River Basin.
They were real workhorses back in their day for sure Douglas.
Lot's of them still in service on shortlines. The big RR's have
mostly relegated them to switching duties. We very much

Remote control of lokomotives is fun. One guy went for a brake, laid the control on the bench and threw the jacket there as well... and the joystick was pushed for forward... Guess the rest... A loco was found up in the grass in a nearby roundabout and the railroad got a phonecall if they're missing any locomotive. No they said. Good but we have one standing here alone with the engine running....
Thanks for sharing the story Stefan, I can just imagine that!
Really appreciate your paying us a visit and riding along my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Having several friends, in the past, bein train engineers and some more, working with telecom and radio, I've heard a few stories that can entertain people.

Cmon Dave, only steam locomotives sound awesome. I believe that coal was gods gift to mankind. Still cool to hear the wine of the diesel. You still get a thumbs up for a great video. Thanks so much.
No argument with me on that Tom! Great to see you are an advocate
for coal, I'm right with you on that too. Always a pleasure to have
you visit with us and write in my friend.
THATS A SOUND I HAVEN'T HEARD SINCE I RETIRED.
I used to switch all over our diesel shop area. 3mph, but sometimes it would get a little over that, when we were road-testing extended range dynamic braking. (Ya bring it to 5mph and throw it into full DB, and time it how long till it comes to a complete stop.) Regular DB wont work past a slow speed.
I loved to hear the turbo increase when you would notch up. I wish I knew how to capture sound from a video. I would make this my ringtone. GM EMD units sound SO MUCH BETTER than GE units! I wish I had a dollar for every EMD I have rewired! It would pay for a vacation!
Thank you for agitating my memories!
Very glad you enjoyed the sounds. It is a delightful sound for sure
as it spools up and down. Totally agree with you on the EMD vs GE
sound. Thanks so much for riding along with us and writing in

Nothing quite like the beautiful low frequency rumble of a 16-645E3. Thank you for this ride along Dave! This was cool. Hope I get to get up in the cab of an SD40-2 one of these days. The SD40-2 is my favorite diesel road engine of all time.

Back in the peak of the Corona Virus outbreak companies were having employees 'Work From Home' so as to reduce the spread of the Virus.
I just happen to be listening to our railroad's management 'Afternoon System Wide Conference Call' which includes all of our terminals. In the discussion on how to get more employees to 'Work From Home'(brace yourself) one of our local trainmasters asked "Why can't we have our 'Remote Jobs' just work from home?" There was a long silence. A LONG SILENCE ! Then the rest of the participants in the 'Conference Call' resumed discussing their estimated arrival and departure times of their division's trains throughout the system. Needless to say...this 'TRAINMASTER' 'DIDN'T COME UP THRU THE RANKS' !(but he had a degree in agriculture).
Yes Wes I can certainly believe that is true. If I had to take a guess
it would be NS. I've got similar stories, here's one and I will make it
short. New guy hired to run small engine repair shop, never been
around locos in his life, was a high rank at Tupperware, had a
degree. Came into shop and cause a loco was 15 minutes late
from going to test shop, he directed the pipe fitter to immediately
fill the radiator with water or he would be fired. Then he pointed to
the sand tank fill cap and said fill it with water. And the pipe fitter
even asked him if he was sure that what he wanted to do, and
the manager said fill it or you're fired. So yep he filled the sand
tank with water. I got that from a guy who was in the shop
when it happened. Sad but true so I have no doubt of your story.
Thanks for the ride Dave. Can't beat the sound of that purr. I believe if we could bottle it, we could sell it!

for stopping by and taking in tonight's show my friend.
One of my favorite sounds. Awesome Dave if that don’t make you happy I don’t know what would?? The SD -40-2 was one of the last locomotives you actually had to operate. Sound so nice !!!
I’d actually be hanging on that graham white like it owed me money!!! 😂📣🔔🎵
Thanks so much Mike for the very nice comment. We always appreciate your visiting with us and hearing from you my friend.
Lot's of these 40-2 still out there, although most have been
relegated to switching operations on the big RR's. Still lot's
of short lines use them for road service.
Good video! greetings from Argentina
Thank you Jeremia, glad you enjoyed the video. We certainly
do appreciate your riding along with us and taking in the video
today my new friend from Argentina
Sometimes it must be nice to sit back and watch things operate just as they are supposed to do! A time to sit back and smell t diesel! It's almost like roses!
Yes it is Raymond, a nice diversion for me on this one. We certainly do appreciate your taking the time to watch and ride along today my friend.
