There is just something about the sound of the EMD's working hard that is sort of soothing or the like. It is the same sort of reaction one gets to hearing a merlin engine in full power.
We’re so lucky to have so many old first generation EMD locos still working and kicking ass. The fact that they sound bloody beautiful is just the icing on the cake.
Thanks Schony747 for another Beaut Vid for us Lovers of the Old Vicrail Loco's. It helps keep the memory of my Father and my childhood on the Sunshine bend watching the Southern Aurora/The Overlander and freight movements alive.
@@Schony747 It's nice to for once see a train where you can actually hear the engines working! How loud are these locomotives when you're standing by the tracks hearing them go past you? The video makes it hard to tell.
Good day Brenden, It was only a matter of time before you went to Warrenheip & captured those beautiful sounding V16 EMD 567 at Notch 8 battling the grade. Sounded absolutely awesome & soothing at the same time beautifully capture in all its glory. In your professional opinion what is the harder grade to climb Gooseberry or Warrenheip? Great video thoroughly enjoyed it. Cheers Louis Kats ☺👍
In my professional no nothing about trains bur enjoy filming them, Warrenheip is the harder and much longer grade to conquer as it's an uphill grade that only gets steeper from The Queen St Railway bridge and that's a long length of a climb.
I wish I'd gotten the chance to go out and watch them before they replaced them with Ns. I was going to go watch them shunting on what turned out the Wednesday after the last train was run with streamliners. Still got to see them in Totty yard
Is the lead locomotive (S312) essentially the same as a North American E unit? It looks like an E, with 6 axles and longer length than an F unit. Does it have two Vee-12's in it like an E does? Whatever the configuration I do love this sound. Ken.
The S class have a single V16 in them, they have a few other differences such as having all the axles powered and also hostler controls in the other end
Over the years Warrenheip Bank has claimed a few victims. It's probably not feasible to have a banker based at Ballarat as there's only a handful of freight trains that run every week through Ballarat.
No gears. The diesel engine drives a generator that powers electric motors on the bogie. Think of it as how a petrol range extender works on an electric car.
Wow, the similarities with this video are incredible: th-cam.com/video/xaAhN7L40wY/w-d-xo.html Same consist, S+T+B, but sure nice to see it in high res! 👍
hi from england. sounds like these locos are overloaded, serious damage to the engine and generator will occur, these are old locos, they shuold look to get class 66 locos with 3.300bhp like we have over here, and they are low gerared.
This setup is pretty well normal for SSR in Victoria. The horsepower is adequate for most of the run but locations like Warrenheip Bank test all loaded trains regardless of loco. The 66 is a nice machine and very successful

Or a graceful quad engine Boeing 747! All have a similar effect on people.
Agreed 100%
Old EMD diesel sounds will be a classic forever. That is sure.
In my opinion it's just as good as the sound of the A-10 main gun going brrrrrrrrrt.
Or a smoking whiny Detroit diesel! I could put that audio on my night grey-noise box n sleep to it! But youre right ...very soothing!😂❤
seeing cab/cowl units pulling freight is really cool. great sound
Yes mate. We are still lucky to have them running around
I LOVE THESE OLD LOCOMOTIVES. THEY SOUND SO TUFF! NOTHING IS TOUGHER THAN THESE MACHINES. BRUTE POWER.
Old technology mate but still making money

Correct and we need to enjoy them while we still have them
Full power, love those stream liners❤
Yes we are very lucky to still have them!
Spectacular show and sounds! Love it!
Spectacular trackside and just as good on the video. Thanks alot!

That was me as a Ballarat kid! Watching the Overland as it rolled through in the morning.
Most excellent! Thanks for sharing with the world.
Thanks for having a look
These grand old locos, terrific video
Thanks. It's still good to see them in service.
That's the way locomotives sounded when I was little in the 50's and 60's.
And they sound just as good today!

Great video Brenden! Lovely footage from Warrenheip with the old locos trying to get up the bank.
It's always a great spot to view the trains. I don't overuse the location but for combinations like this, it's worth the view
Some monster sounds of EMD two strokes
Yes mate! The sound never gets old either

Awesome video.

Cool video 😊

That train looks intimidating from the front, slow mover makes for a good video. We love our train video in Clemson SC, Go Tigers!
Thanks! 😀😀
Thanks
Great railvideo 👍🏻
Thankyou mate 😀😀
@1:34 1.1 on the ricter scale when these trains go by even though i am 2km away from the track lol
Yeah they can be heard 5 minutes before they pass us!

Combined 5000hp (plus/minus) with 2500 tons on the drawbar?
About 4500 combined horsepower. Not sure of the tonnage on the back

1:04 A locomotive designed for those who don't know if they are coming or going?
Pretty much. If you're not sure you can just choose

They aren't gone for good. S312 was on a grain only a few days ago.
@@Schony747oh cool
I used to work on an opencast coal site. We had a couple of drag lines working there and the engines sounded like locomotives..I think they were
That would be right. Other miners have told me similar things
The American Equivalent of our UK Delticz
Tonnage? How much power in the EMDs?
Not sure of the tonnage behind. The S class is around 1800 hp and the B class 1500 hp.
@@Schony747 Thanks. I just wonder the power vs weight in that 1:50 grade.
Does Australia only run EMD locomotives? Or do we have GE trains as well?
Is there an app for freight train movements?
I never seem to be in the right place at the right time.
Anytrip gives passenger trains. All freight info I either get through mates or the Facebook train tracking groups
Whilst I love the sound it’s just awesome, it’s kinda sad that we are still using such old equipment
That's the other point of discussion that doesn't get mentioned very often.
What tge heck was that double-cab loco? I never knew EMD even built such a thing!😂😅

Pretty much as Clyde gained license to build the locos over here instead or the USA

Thanks. Sort of a cross between a carbody unit and an SD.
@@hmw-ms3txwell actually the SDs were made with the 6 motor bogies which were first designed for the VR B class

loco up front.

It's not eye catching that's for sure. When grain cars spend lots of time stationary without much protection, this sort of stuff will always happen.
🎉
Thanks Tim.
how many gears does it have? and is it automatic or manual?
It's a V12 engine. I'm assuming it would be automatic as the train driver just notches of from one to 8.
It’s a 1810hp V16, or in GM speak a 16V, two-stroke diesel engine. It’s not an automatic. It’s diesel-electric.
No gears. The diesel engine drives a generator that powers electric motors on the bogie.
Think of it as how a petrol range extender works on an electric car.
Yeah, just slip the clutch a bit on a steeper grade so you don't bunny hop it.......
Wonder if the engineer is stressing the locomotive might not make it up the hill?
Probably not. They've travelled this grade many times
Grouse!
Thanks alot 😀😀
Why is this consistent underpowered, makes no sense to not adding power, this just bears these beautiful locos up
Fair point. I don't have the answer to
