Those Reading and Northern yellow and green locos were just gorgeous - they were in pristine condition. There's a shortline takes pride in their equipment!
Love the SD40-2! My favorite Diesel road switcher! The 16-645 sounds so good chugging along at around Notch 4 but wide open they really push out the power. I know these clips are a few years old but I hope that there are still some roads out there daily driving SD40-2's.
there is nothing in this world ... like that of a locomotive hauling over track ... the sound of its might as your heartbeat becomes one with its pulse................ i love trains i love trains Steam especially Diesel is awesome too !!! thank you for the upload !!
Fans sure add to that great turbo howl. When I've walked back to check trailing units it is really evident. Dynamic braking gives that same element too.
I like the sound of the engine but when you hear the radiator fans really trying thats what gets me sounds so cool especially in the winter when you hear them kick on and off climbing up grade from far out great video!
The not-so-little engines that could! Love me some SD-anything and love me that heritage stuff! Oh, and I'm half a mile from the S-line in central FL, and we all get to hear prime movers (haulin' ass, this is flatlands) all day and all night!
Ty for sharing and never can get enough of SD40-2's. Probably because was around Railroads and remember the sounds. Nothing compares today to that sound when I was a young kid in the late 70's and early 80's. You'd hear a Horn from a distance which could be 2 to six miles away and you'd hear that Hum! No need to go into detail....those who know that sound can relate. Great video and ty again for sharing.
Always love seeing old DM&E locomotives. I grew up watching them pull trains through my town. It was the best thing I knew back then and today. Love it when I see them in their home territory pulling heavy trains one off the steepest grades on the line
Great sounding is right. You don't hear that anymore. The trio really look nice. If only those were still running on the Cajon Subdivision once again How beautiful. Fantastic video.
When those 645's are working like at @10:55 if you are standing near, you feel it in your stomach and the ground shakes. Imagine the torque on those Crankshafts putting that power down. Something to behold.
Great video! Captured the essence of SD 40 ts Doing what theyre happiest at Throttle 8 2% grade 100+ cars in tow! Nice shots of well kept ex class1 units we maintained. All that video is missing is the sweet smell of diesel fuel and 40wt oil,and the ground pounding like an earthquake!
I already irritate my neighbors. I have a Peavey TNT 130 (130 watt) bass guitar amp. My son once complained that i made the window in his bedroom vibrate and things falling off the shelf in his room. I suppose if I really want to irritate them more, I could use some ear plugs and feed the line output from my stereo into the bass amp. I use the line out on my computer sound card into the aux. input on my stereo. I do love the sound of diesel-electric locos running at max. power.
Wow dude!, hahaha, lol! Those Peaveys are some versatile amps, aren't they?, I had a Peavey Special 130 for about 15 years, never failed me yet!! Yeah those jokers can take a beating!! Lol!!
@@kevinporter6426 I used to work from the local Goodwill headquarters, first as a bus driver then as a truck driver making pickups and deliveries to the 8 stores we operated. I found it at one of the stores, while working, paid $40 for it and then picked it up after work. It had a dirty gain control that would make a loud pop noise when I touched it. I do electronic repair work and have Caig rotary control cleaner lubricant, that I call 'magic juice'. It fixed the problem. My brother-in-law gave me a $70 Playmate bass guitar that somebody stole when I was working upstairs and left the front door open. My daughter bought me an Epiphone SG clone for Christmas. I'm not a musician per se, but learned to play by ear. The amp was missing a knob but I got one for $1 from a local store that sold drums and guitars and also did repair work.
Great Videography Capture SD40-2 Cadillacs, NS popping out Gallitzin, Nifty CR NS patch’s, Snazzy CP HiCubes, Vintage clean RBN SW 1’s, 6) CSX and what ?? a 40’ Green Box car… beat to crap GRW gons, CSX on Sand Patch w/ Centerbeams upfront (NS tried that stunt on Horseshoe)….thanks for giving this retired Railfan and H0 modeler some prototypical license ….not to mention NECR post card scene. Thanks for posting!!
These just sound so much better than all AC4400 and alike on the UP and BNSF railroads today, it seems the notheast with all its shortlines is the place to be when you like old EMD stuff. The two SW-8s in the Reading and Northern train are a nice spot too. The Luxembourg railways (tiny country wedged in between where France, Germany and Belgium meet) used to have 6 locomotives similar to the SW-8 class as CFL800 but with a more rounded and slightly lower cab roof and European style buffers and hook and link couplers installed, I always liked to see and hear these little machines in action. Besides those CFL800 Luxembourg and Belgian railways used a lot of locomotives powered by either V12 or V16 non turbo 567 engines, but those are virtually all gone beside a small number used on engineers trains or in preservation.
EMD Needs to bring out an up to date state of the art sd40-2 in current time. It was their best selling model. Miss seeing all emd consists like these.
I think that's the reason the railroad are rebuilding so many of them. Unfortunately, I hear they don't run as well with all the new computer tech installed, but it's still amazing to think 50-60 year old locomotives are still dominating a decent portion of the fleet on Class I railroads.
I love the synchronized wave sounds the engines make. Imagine you landed on planet Earth in a remote region and you heard that eerie sound in the distance.
Whoever designed the connector (knuckle) that connects these trains together must have been a genius. I mean you've got as many as 5 engines connected together pulling a 100 Plus car train loaded to the gills, can't even begin to imagine the kind of force that must be exerted against a very lead knuckle attached to the rear of the 5th engine connecting it to that large a train.
Wow! Ex BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe), Ex Ex BN (Burlington Northern) green SD40-2. I miss those units. Back in the days, it's all I would see is green BN loco's. Now most of them are ether repainted to BNSF orange or got sold off to other railroad companies, and sadly some got scrapped. Very rare to see a green Burlington Northern locomotive. HLCX, NCRX, FURX or other leasing companies took over them. Luckly, BNSF kept some of them, untouched and not repainted into the new orange BNSF paint scheme, as well as some EX Santa Fe yellow and dark blue or red and silver warbonnets.
Nothing sounds better then a 2 stroke engine a notch 8. Unfortunately, I'm missing that now in California since most locomotives are 4 stroke-mostly GE. But with after treatment, the 710 series is now Tier 4 final approved too!
Glorious- although I'm a little surprised you weren't able to include Pan Am back when the bulk of their road power was SD40-2s....unless they're part of a Part Two you have in the works. If it's any consolation, I've been binge-watching train videos from Brazil (some of them only a few weeks old) and a number of SD40-2s and SD40T-2s have made their way down there and are still working for outfits like ALL Logistica, Rumo Logistica or Brado Logistica….although much like up here, newer GEs are starting to make inroads. There's even BB40-2s for the narrow gauge lines in the northern part of the country- basically an SD40-2 with a longer 'porch' and two BB trucks where one 3-axle standard gauge SD truck used to be. Quite the 'kitbash'
I have not done much railfanning along Pan Am, and the MEC SD40-2's I have caught weren't throttling like crazy. I'd like to get up to New England again and shoot some Pan Am, but it probably won't be until later next year.
Isn't it something? The dash 2 line was produced from the early 70s to early 80s, and roughly 90% of them are still in service. Almost all that were sold off by class 1s were bought by shorelines. Alot of the Sd40s built from 67 to 73? Were rebuilt into dash 2s.
I wonder how many times locomotive engineers and conductors see railfans standing there with cameras, and filming them. They must feel very popular, like movie stars. That set of 6 Reading and Northern EMD's are popular on TH-cam.
Great to see the engines working so hard. However, it makes more sense to see the train they are pulling in its entire sight so that it explains why the engines are working so hard.
Love this sound. I once was in the Kicking Horse pass and heard an eastbound train climbing out of Golden with 4 engines up front and four in the rear all in notch 8. The canyon was booming. Do the CP ones sound even better?
If EMD want to regain his domination again, I think there is some way to do it : 1. Do the same thing when they built the SD40-2, simple electronics and simple mechanics 2. Develop a Tier IV compliant 710s as standard and an optional 1010s 3. Do what GE does, making customer based services and good aftersales technique As a former GE fans, I could say that lots of railway companies nowadays use GE instead of EMD because of GE's customer based service (like taking complaints and fix it as well as asking what will be the railway companies suggestion to new product) meanwhile make their product better overtime...
@12:05 there are yellow signs on both sides of the track. 35/25 LHS and 35/30 RHS, do these indicate speeds for the curves? Thanks in advance. Hi from NZ, Anthony
The sounds of the SD40-2 Units accelerating like that, are my favorite kind of sound!
I agree 100%
Love the 8 notch sound, nothin better soundin than the EMD-645,...glad to see the former U.P. sd45's/sd40-2 snoots still rollin.👍
Those Reading and Northern yellow and green locos were just gorgeous - they were in pristine condition. There's a shortline takes pride in their equipment!
@Archibald Mirenopteryx Agreed! It's always great to see a company that takes care of their equipment :)
Love the SD40-2! My favorite Diesel road switcher! The 16-645 sounds so good chugging along at around Notch 4 but wide open they really push out the power. I know these clips are a few years old but I hope that there are still some roads out there daily driving SD40-2's.
Those 645E prime movers are awesome, the horns aren't too bad either! Love those 40-2's, my favorite diesel, thanks for putting this together
there is nothing in this world ... like that of a locomotive hauling over track ... the sound of its might as your heartbeat becomes one with its pulse................ i love trains i love trains Steam especially Diesel is awesome too !!! thank you for the upload !!
Khym Turner yes indeed, us railroaders know what you mean...it’s hard to put into words the love and passion.
The roar from 645E3s are the best
I love SD40-2 😃🖒 SD40-2 is the most beautiful diesel engine. I miss old times..... 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
John D. Falcone Indeed But The Emd Sd70Mac is also a beautiful locomotive as well with The Emd Gp-38-2 And Even The Gp-60
Easily one of the most iconic American diesel locomotives.
The sound of pure power... I feel like the howling radiator fans add another level of power to the sound of the locomotive
Fans sure add to that great turbo howl. When I've walked back to check trailing units it is really evident. Dynamic braking gives that same element too.
I agree 100%
The radiator fans are one of my favorite sounds from EMD’s!
Usually GE power is my go 2 but this is amazing
I like the sound of the engine but when you hear the radiator fans really trying thats what gets me sounds so cool especially in the winter when you hear them kick on and off climbing up grade from far out great video!
There are some breathtaking shots there; 5:35 in the mist, and 14:35 in the sun and snow in particular.
The not-so-little engines that could! Love me some SD-anything and love me that heritage stuff! Oh, and I'm half a mile from the S-line in central FL, and we all get to hear prime movers (haulin' ass, this is flatlands) all day and all night!
8:42 - that collection is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Just beautiful!! What a stunner!

The unmistakable growl of a rare GP39 at 10:50.

Sweet Sweet music 🎶 to my ears 👂 💕. Sweet memories of watching trains, my favorite diesel sound. You even got 5910! My favorite SD40-2! Beautiful.
Nothing more enjoyable than a locomotive on it's knees.
Your local Baltimore Railfan. Some of these trains look underpowered
Zll
Great video! Captured the essence of SD 40 ts Doing what theyre happiest at Throttle 8 2% grade 100+ cars in tow! Nice shots of well kept ex class1 units we maintained. All that video is missing is the sweet smell of diesel fuel and 40wt oil,and the ground pounding like an earthquake!
Iowa, Chicago and Eastern 6446 lives!!! Last time I saw it was in 2007 in Des Moines Iowa.
Got to love the EMDs! They are great diesels!
Those are some cool catches and yes that prime mover sounds great
That sound of power is unmistakable and music to my ears! Long Live the EMD 645...
those snow scenes are killer.
Top notch (Run 8) cinematography! Great stuff all around. Thanks for all the work and sharing!

Amazing! I'm grateful that our shortline (PNWR) is all EMD. We even have SD7's!!
Awesome sounds from the sd40-2 in notch 8
nice vid. it's summer. I don't even want to think about snow.

Yeah the Northeast is where you’ll find most of the older EMDs. NJ Transit and Metro-North still use them and they’re still going strong!
Great video. Enjoying even after 3 years.
Great train video. Thank you
SD 40-2 in notch 8 pulling👍👍,,sweet sweet sound👌👌
3:56 love the Manual Valve on that P3

SD40-2 Heaven... Most definitely an awesome vid.
Amazing sound!! The pure power of EMD engines ..... the best sound ever, talking about diesel engines!!!
Wow sd40s pulling double stacks? That’s rare.
This is a really good video. Thank you for all the work that you put into making it.
Nice Catch
wow...there is a straight SD40 CITX #3077 in there....great catch!!!!
and a former BN one at that! They're hard to find nowadays. Especially a brace (duo) of two non-rebuilt SD40-2s on a mainline train.
Great video! My favorite locomotive to run!
I also love the engine changing sound at 5:40
Great video
I forgot how glorious the SD40-2s sound in notch 8
Very satisfying to watch!
Even after at least 30 years in service, the sd40-2s are still proving their worth today.
Now its 50 years
Great variety.
Great Vid ... those early EMD 645's tearin ass
Thank you for a great presentation of towing power!
I love the synchronized wave sounds the engines make. Imagine you landed on planet Earth in a remote region and you heard that eerie sound in the distance.
Throttle Eight.....don’t be late!

Probably the best locomotive ever built, the SD40-2
Great video. I love the compilation of all the different trains and freight that you capture. Way to keep viewers excited and not bored.
😎👍🏻
you make awesome videos love it. Idk if there's a better sound than a 645 wide open
Great Video. 🇮🇳
Love it

I really like the Norfolk Southern engines, the white on black really reminds me of the old Union Pacific steam locomotives.
Great compilation thanks for sharing
One of the greatest videos I've ever seen!
Nice bunch of hard working railroad locomotives
👍👍👍😎😎😎
Excellent camera work and good audio! Oh how I miss that 645 sound.
Great video, interesting power there.
That is a wonderful sound almost a good as a steam engine whistle moaning in the mountains. But raw power sure sounds good.
In my opinion the SD 40 was the best locomotive followed closely by the GP 38 and 40
That’s one great noise I’ll never forget.
Outstanding!

The sound of the power
I miss seeing those blue and yellow IC&E locos going threw town! They took over after IMRL left Iowa.
Love the Canadian horns
K5LA is the best sounding horn!
Great video and catches!
Impressive always!
The sound of raw power, enough to overcome the earth itself.
Great video!

That CSX auto rack train at 13:57 was DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to hitting the bottom of that trestle bridge it was passing under.
I'm sure it was just the camera angle

THANK YOU !!!! proper Notch 8 action here .... not Notch 4 like in so many other videos
The only thing missing is the clackety-clack of jointed rail.

Hi from NZ,

It's the speed limit. I'm pretty sure it's passenger trains on top and freight on bottom
