  • Who would ever design a spare wheel so close to the towball that it's almost impossible to attach a trailer? Mitsubishi would! But here's the three steps I went through to get around this stupidly irritating problem, particularly if you're regularly towing a caravan or trailer.
Out of the many things I like about the Mitsubishi Pajero, there are a handful I hate! In this mini-series, I'm looking at the top 5 I managed to fix, or at least get a manageable workaround! If you're considering buying a Pajero, consider these factors before purchasing to make sure you can live with them.

Good job on the bracket 👍

Hi Greg - thanks for the helpful video. I have exactly the same issue. Did you pre-drill the holes prior to cutting the hitch handle? Also, what type of screw/bolt did you use at each side and how did you attach them to the hitch shaft? Thanks again.

Hey Russell, glad it was helpful. Yes I pre-drilled the holes before cutting the hitch. I have since sold that van so can't confirm the screws used but they were fairly thin and long, I reckon they were M3 or M4 at the largest and probably about 40mm long. I would say pre-drill small say 2mm, cut the coupling leaving as much material below the cut and possible, then measure what's left and work out how large you can do. I drilled the hole in the handle out to clearance and had a smaller hole in the main part of the coupling so the screws cut a thread into the main part of the coupling and left the rest of the handle spinning on the screws.
Either that or fit a DO -35 coupling!

G'day again Greg. Just a little confused about your wheel lift and those brackets! Ugh!
Have you fitted wider tyres than the 265's?
I got my plate from MM and the door garnish still closes on the standard spare, and I even have a fabric cover on the wheel with no problems.
    Thanks.

Hi Greg, yes I was pretty frustrated when I found the door didn't close, but from Geopaj's vehicle as shown, clearly obviously someone else had the same problem. I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T 265's so I don't know why my door didn't close, and why most people don't have this problem. My guess is that they have had a few versions of the spare wheel doors, and mine (NW 2012) is one design that doesn't fit when the wheel's lifted.

Hi Greg, what fabric cover worked for you after the spare lifting plate was installed? I'm trying to source one that will fit. Thanks

@@markgibson8145 G'day Mark, have tried to reply with pics but have to do it thru' Youchoob.
My cover is an old one, measures 78cm. between the seams and another 30 to the edge of the fabric. This is for the standard tyre. I also ran a cord around the outer edge to tie and put some tarp rings in the bottom for drainage. When I clean the car I also rub in a bit of tyre shine to keep it 'new'. The doomboosters reckon you shouldn't do that with vinyl, but it is now about 18 years old!

Well done! Are you able to publish the dimensions of the garnish extension brackets you made up please? TIA

Sure mate. You will end up with three brackets in total.
On the driver's (right) side of the vehicle, there are two flat brackets, each of which is about 140mm long x 50mm high. On each bracket, you need to drill the three holes which line up with the original hinge holes, and put two bolts through the bracket and screw the bracket onto where the hinge originally attached. You then have to drill another three holes further along which the hinge will attach onto. You can use bolts with loose nuts with spring washers to attach the wheel cover hinge to the bracket, or root nuts, however I welded a couple of nuts on the back of the bracket. You'll need a welder for the other bracket anyway.
On the passenger (left) side of the vehicle, it's a tall rectangular U-shaped bracket, which is about 190mm high when installed. The U shape consists of 35mm high sides and a 65mm wide base. You have to drill a hole straight through each of the 35mm sides of the U at one end, then repeat at the other end - so hole from the outside of one 35mm side, drill through, then continue into the other 35mm side and out the other side. You then need to get some bolts to bolt one side of the bracket into the spare wheel cover, and on the inside of the other side you need to weld a nut top and bottom for the original long bolts through the tailgate door to go into. From memory they are an odd thread, very fine, I think it was M12 fine or something like that. I had to go somewhere like Universal Fasteners to get mine. You can just take the original bolts which hold the spare wheel cover on to a place like this and ask them for two bolts (probably 30-40mm long) and two nuts with matching threads.
If I did the job again I would make the spare wheel cover not poke out quite so far as mine does, but when I was doing it it was so difficult to measure exactly how much clearance I needed I wanted to make sure I had enough. So for the 65mm bottom part of the U I might drop it to 55mm and bring the new set of holes on the two shorter brackets a bit closer in.
Sorry there are lots of words, but hopefully this gives you some idea of where to start!
