Power steering fluid flush - Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero / Shogun
Power steering fluid gets neglected because it's not listed on most Mitsubishi service schedules. But it still breaks down over time, especially with inner-city driving.
Make sure you choose the right fluid for your power steering. Penrite recommends Dex-III mineral or ATF FS for the power steering on the Pajero, but this is different to the ATF LV they recommend for the transmission. So don't just grab whatever you used for the transmission and assume it'll be OK for the power steering like I did!
Flushing out your old dirty fluid and replacing it with clean stuff isn't a long job, and should be done every ~100,000kms.
Tools needed:
* Bull-nosed pliers
* About 2m of clear plastic hose with internal diameter ~16mm
* About 2L of new transmission / power steering fluid - I used Penrite ATF LV
* A 2L waste oil container / milk bottle / juice bottle
* A couple of jacks to lift both front wheels off the ground

If you've bought a second-hand caravan, your first job should be to check (and probably replace) the 'anode' in the hot water service. Most vans use a Suburban SW6DEA or SW6DERA hot water service, but the process should be similar for other models. The anode is a consumable item that only lasts a year or so, and once it's gone your hot water service will start rusting out, costing over $1000 to...

    Hi Greg, Thanks for the review. At Keep Track GPS, based in Perth, we have 10 battery-powered GPS trackers to choose from and 4 Hardwired GPS Trackers, including battery backup and hybrid cellular and satellite trackers. We offer dedicated Iridium Satellite Trackers if you're not short on cash. One thing about anything you buy nowadays, including GPS Trackers, is you are paying for what you get. Pay cheap, you get cheap. When dealing with a caravan costing between $80,000 to $250,000, why wouldn't you spend the extra money buying a quality GPS? Nowadays, some Insurance companies are asking for a GPS Tracker to be hardwired into the caravan full-time, giving the owner 30 days to comply. They may also request another one for the vehicle towing the van, even more so if the vehicle is modified and a few extra toys are added. About 1000+ caravans are stolen each year around Australia, which is why insurance companies are asking for them to be installed. Always ask your insurance company if they give discounts for installing a GPS tracker, which may offset some of the cost. www.keeptrackgps.com.au

      No, they actually both say to do it when the engine is cold, probably to prevent it going into a piping hot engine. But I think both would work better if the gunk is warm and soft, so a soak stage would probably help. Although again the stuff may evaporate more in a hot manifold...!

      That makes sense and it's what I did in this video. But the instructions on the can don't say that, it says it'll clean dirty manifolds (however unlikely that claim may sound to you and I) so that's why I tested its claims first.

    LiTime batteries are great value, better price, more AH, and the amount of reviews on here (including tear-downs) and positive feedback from many buyers makes it a no brainer. Any battery company that have over rated their product is not to be trusted, and this brand has been caught out in the past.

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The pump does push it out so fast that it should eliminate the air pretty quickly. I reckon having up higher might risk it spilling and making a mess! A drain and refill a few times without removing the hoses, with a bit of driving in between, would help, but you'd still have some of the old stuff in there mixed with the new.

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha no sorry I actually did that prior to the power steering and didn't think of it! Wish I had TBH. But it's basically the same process, you just remove the top end of the rubber hose at the bottom of the trans cooler and slide a plastic hose over the metal pipe that comes down vertically and run the engine until fluid starts spurting. Refill underneath (helps to have a hand pump to pump it up to the fill point which is high on the driver's side of the trans) and repeat until you get clean fluid coming through. Uses about 10L to do it properly, and then refill. I've changed the filter in the transmission twice, about 70k between each time and both times it's been clean as inside so I wouldn't bother doing it on yours yet.

      Unless you've already donated to the channel to help me continue to buy products for reviews, I don't think you're really in a position to criticise an upcoming review of a loaned product. How does that have any influence on the content of the review? I don't get to keep it, I just review it and send it back to them, and the only thing I get out of it is the tiny amount of ad revenue from the video, and affiliate commissions from any kind people who choose to use the link (of which there has been one so far, not five). Over the past few years I've regularly asked for viewers to financially support the channel and unfortunately hardly anyone's ever done it. So if I'm to continue creating in-depth reviews like I do and people aren't willing to donate to offset those costs then I need other ways to access product, especially when I don't actually need it myself. I already have a solar blanket, so it makes no sense for me to pay $500 to buy a product I don't need just so I can create reviews for people who aren't willing to chip in. Do you really think TH-camrs should create content and not get paid for their work?

    You want the oil fumes to go through your engine! It helps lubricate and clean componets. The EGR (everything gets rooted) is the problem. Stop it, stop the problem. Clean the manifold, disconnect the EGR and the catch can and do the same test. The only thing causing the build up is the EGR sending exhaust soot through the manifold. catch cans are not going to 100% stop oil vapours and are a waste of money. The whole build up of crap is the soot from the EGR getting mixed with the oil vapours causes a sludge of oil and soot which then builds up which then with heat gets baked on layer after layer. If you use a catch can you still get the soot from EGR but a little less oil vapours and therefore the same problem, maybe just at a slower rate of build up. Oil on its own won't build up, it'll just get drawn through the intake and burnt as it always used to before this world went crazy about emissions standards. The goal is to Remove the soot done easily via an EGR total delete by software and or EGR blanking plate, then all you get is fresh clean oil vapours ( assuming you're regularly service the motor ) being sucked back into the combustion chamber. No baked on sludge

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep EGR is certainly the main culprit. If it was legal to get rid of it that's probably what I'd do.

    We've had two issues with our Solid GPS. First was finding a location in our van where it would actually work. The location we ended up putting it wasn't ideal. Second issue was it stopped working about 3 weeks ago. Only found out as we didn't get a boundary alert when it left our storage location and it didn't give any updates for the 3 days we were away. Told to charge it overnight and turn it off/on again. We changed from Black Knight Z3 as it was only 3G and with the closure of the 3G network we needed a tracker. We had the Black Knight for 4 years and it never missed a beat.

      Hi Ian, Thanks for the comment. Yeah as you would have seen from the review, I had the same issue mounting in my van. In the end I fabricated a little nook for it and that's working fine, however Solid GPS is now offering a waterproof pouch with their trackers if you want it, which provides a good mounting alternative. I'll be doing another review this year on the Solid comparing with a similar unit and I'll show cover that pouch as part of the review, so stay tuned for that. Odd that you didn't get an alert about the low battery, do you have the app installed on your phone? Or might it have gone into spam in your inbox? I haven't had the luxury of letting mine run down to a critical level as I'm using it regularly, but I'll check that next time. A hardwired option like the Black Knight is certainly set and forget as far as battery maintenance providing your happy to go through the hassle of doing the wiring, it's just a shame the ongoing fees were so much higher than Solid. The solid GPS isn't a perfect unit, but all up I'm pretty happy with it especially for the price. Cheers, Greg

      Maybe it depends on the quality. The yellow ones in the video were 3 years old. The small one had been in the sun and was faded but otherwise fine. And as I mentioned in the video, the red one is over 25 years old and still going strong. So my experience certainly hasn't shown any of the problems you allege.

      Yeah, maybe I've just been exposed to the modern cheap Chinese stuff. However the excessive expansion in the sun always made me anxious. I'll try the metal for a while and see how we go. I do agree quality is key.

      Cool keep me posted. I agree expansion could be a concern but they should be designed to handle it. My yellow cans are about 5 years old and probably Chinese (Proquip brand I think) and haven't split despite the 10l being in the Aussie summer sun a good 2 years

    Def needs some work on the app and tracking, I've had mine in my vehicle for around 6 months now and it constantly stalls, right now its been stuck on "moving" for 6 days when I haven't left home, this is a huge worry if the vehicle was stolen, and yes I have clear signal and the unit is positioned in a position that allows for perfect GPS signals.

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've had that when the device has gone out of signal range but not other times. Check with Solid GPS why it might be doing that, it may be that it's not going to sleep properly and that Moving is the default position when it's not sleeping. If so it'll be chewing through more battery than usual. Let us know what you find.

    Random thought: early GPS tracking systems used satellites. IOW: line of sight on a minimum number of geosynchronous satellites. There's geology where you are lucky to have one satellite, much less 3 or 4. In worst case installations, an antenna was used to gain access. SO... How are these devices working from inside trunks and pockets? That said, my minimum: subscription free and 12 volts powered or USB chargeable. Toss in real time tracking when your ride is on the lam. I wonder how USB charging would respond to being permanently hooked in. Cell phones are just now developing smart charging that doesn't fry the battery when left on the charger.

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are probably locations where there are limited satellites available but it only tracks every 10 minutes usually, or 2 minutes in emergency mode, so there's usually plenty of time to get a new location lock. Your phone can still detect its location from inside luggage so the tracker should be able to do the same. As far as your minimum specs: I doubt you'll find anyone who gives you a tracker without a subscription, as the network provider charges an ongoing fee. It would be like buying a phone and wanting no ongoing plan / fee to use it on a network. No-one's going to do that unless they charge you a huge amount upfront to cover themselves and then they'd never sell one. I don't know how it would handle being on charge permanently, Solid said it could be done but not sure if it's been tested.

    I would not consider anything smaller than 35sqmm cable for my battery connections, and even then thats a bit under sized for some uses such as battery interconnectors, and inverter connections, and I may step up to 50 or even 70sq mm. Not everyone has a roll of that cable laying around as it's extremely expensive and heavy as well. For those saying reduce the fuse to 200 or 250A, yes I agree, but also be aware that the fuse is there to protect the cables and unless you have cables that are capable of handling 200+ amps, which is roughly 70 sq mm, i.e F**king thick, and are instead using something like the 10-16sqmm that appears to be used between the battery and the fuse, a 250A fuse wont stop the cable overheating due to overload. Your 00 gauge is pretty close to 70 sq mm (67mm from memory, so they are likely using 70sqmm cables) and perfect for the task

    • @TheMusingGreg

      All good points thanks for sharing! Yeah the issue of heat with cables comes with time; 250A for a few seconds won't matter but sustained high loads week cause melting issues

    Did you had no voltage prior to the repair ? I have a 120w panel and I had been testing it for few months. It was working fine with around 4A output. Now when I have to actually use it, something happened and now it won't give the same output and current is now only 2A. I have tried to test it without opening it by monitoring voltage by covering each panel out of four and see how much voltage loss I get.. One and two panel shows less voltage drop while 3 and 4 panel shows significant voltage drop. Basically don't know what that means and should I try opening it up and check, what do you suggest ?

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I had no voltage prior to the repair because half of one panel had gone open circuit. That's why for me it made sense to pull it apart and see if I could at least get something out of it. In your situation it sounds like the panels with minimal voltage drop have gone faulty, either by having just reduced output,, or one part may have failed but it may be in parallel with another part which hasn't. In either case, removing the faulty part isn't going to increase your output unless it's in series with other parts that aren't faulty and can't currently provide any output. If the panel is practically unusable for you as it is, you don't have anything to lose by opening it up and seeing if you can isolate the faulty part like I did. However if you're still able to use it as it is, I would just keep it as it is as it's possible you could go through all that work and not actually improve it at all.

    • @CrazzyRandy
      @CrazzyRandy หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMusingGreg Took the brave step today and removed the stitches. Four panel are attached in series and the rear side of the panels are covered with some white sticker so not like yours where you can see the copper. Anyways tested it without the sun for resistance of each panel and the first two show most resistance then the 3,4 panel. Soldering is all good and even checked the continuity from the +.ve points of the panel with the visible side thin wire coming from the front side of the panel. All showed continuity. But that's from the one side only, the other side does not show continuity with the terminal even on the good ones. This testing is without removing the series connection. Seems like the panels are just not producing enough volts and that's about it.

    • @TheMusingGreg
      @TheMusingGreg หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CrazzyRandy It would be worth disconnecting the wiring and measuring the voltage of each panel in the sun. That will help you compare the behaviour of each panel and isolate if it's just one panel with the issue. You could then put a small load on each panel and measure the current through that same load while using a voltmeter to measure the voltage it can hold while delivering that current; that will further help you determine the performance of each panel.

    • @CrazzyRandy
      @CrazzyRandy 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Finally opened it up last month and magically it was putting out around 60watts at 3 amp. Measured it few times at it still showed the same. Today though to measure it again and it is back to 2 amp. All the wiring seems good, re soldered all the points and still same 2amps output. God knows what’s the issue now. It’s nothing I can do and all the panels which are attached in series are good but just not producing enough. Something to do with Earths alignment with the sun🤣

    • @CrazzyRandy
      @CrazzyRandy 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      And the back side of panel is glued with some kind of white sheet nothing is visible from back, only the output points are there.

      @TheMusingGreg หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I'm sure it will to a point, it's just a question of how hard the build-up is common and I suspect around the valves it's going to be somewhat harder than in the manifold. So it should do something but probably not a heap
