Towing with your Pajero - Alko Offroad coupling

  • Hi all.
in this video I cover off the swap out of a standard trailer/van coupling for the alko 50 OFF ROAD 360 degree 50mm ball coupling.
I made the change to give me back the ability to access the rear door of the pajero once hooked up.
This is a fully articulated off road hitch and will assist me in getting in and out of my sloped driveway as well as give me confidence in semi off road situations.

Great video as usually. I have the same coupling on my camper and have taken it off-road many times with no issue.
The only thing I did was the tow hitch attachment, I got one with a longer tongue to provide greater clearance with the coupling handle.
Another thing I've done with the plastic locking piece I drilled a hole through the square part on the coupling small enough to fit a pin in so the plastic piece stays with the coupling so I don't lose it when I go to hook up the camper.

      Thanks Ads.
I figure it was the same when we were speaking on the radio today.
I'll need to come up with something, as I'm sure I'm going to break it or lose it real soon.
I'll have to have a squizz at yours and check it out.
I've been keeping an eye out for one since our Bylong trip.
I wasn't happy taking the van up those roads with the standard hitch set up.
Still, it won't be seeing those sorts of roads very often but it's nice to know I can if needed now.

Good video mate, I'm not up to the towing part of my 4x4 experience yet, still on the swag and a stove stage. But interesting video nontheless, didn't know about the different tow hitches.

      cheers Plez.
I've been keeping an eye on gumtree waiting for the right one to turn up. This one was perfect. What i wanted, close by and the right price.
Towing was part of the reason I went with the Paj, but I still love the basics of camping.
I'm organising a camp soon for some 4wd but the rule is, leave the campers and vans at home.
I'll be chucking the bed build in the back and the other boys will be swagging it.
I might even jump in the hammock since I haven't done that in so long. It's just awesome to have options.

A very good coupling. With a bit of practice you find you can couple and uncouple without using the side locking ring. Also tow with a Pajero and previously used a Suzuki Grand Vitara, being able to open the rear doors on both vehicles has been a massive benefit of this coupling compared to standard tow hitches.
On my wind up camper it has been great - up through High Country and several outback trips - hasn't missed a beat even when camper has been at all sorts of angles on very steep and angled tracks.

      Hi Phil,
yes, getting in that back door makes it so much more convenient.
With the handbreak up it can only open it partially but still enough to be useful, but its not often I run into that situation.
The only issue I'm noticing is the discolouration of the plastic bits like the red handle.
I do worry a little about them becoming brittle long term.
For now though, like you, I find it a huge improvement over the standard unit.
Personally I don't know how Mitsu have left that poor design in place for so many years.

Update, found it would sit off centre and rattle. Change to the Alko "cliplock" pin type coupling. This failed to couple on my first outback trip, coupling filled with dust and wouldn't lock onto trailer. Have now gone to DO35. By far the best of the three. Alko now no longer sell the "cliplock" coupling. DO35s do start making groaning noises from the side bearings after lots of dirt road use. Groaning noise goes away when you lubricate the side bearings.

@@DENMONKEY mate pretty sure if you pull the drop hitch your using out of receiver and look on the very end you will find that hitch is only 2000 kg rated ? No way your van comes under that ? Also by getting the extra reach your also increasing the distance from wheels of car which gives more chance of sway. But big issue is the tow rating of hitch if an accident occurs. how do i know ? Just went to fit one and couldn't believe the low rating on it. Cheers

here's a question for ya though. How does it effect the covers and what not over the top of the wheel ?
do you know if they need any mods due to the wheel being moved up ?

    • @wyattfamily8997
      @wyattfamily8997 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DENMONKEY Planet Parts have them for under $100 ($65/$70) I think) they make mention that the top wheel cover needs to go. I've just bought a 2011 Pajero so will need to check how it lines up with my Coromal 445 which is semi off road raised van so already has an off road style hitch. I have a rough driveway so it will be interesting to see if I can get away without the riser.

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@wyattfamily8997thanks for that. I hadn't heard of them before.
$69.95 with free shipping in Aus. Mine is working ok at the moment but that little bit of extra clearance would be nice.
My main issue was getting it down my steepish driveway and the occasional dirt road. Mine isn't off road but has some clearance now which allows me to go slowly up some stuff that isn't tar.
I have to be realistic about where I take it though but a little lift certainly opens up more options and stops it scrapping down the driveway

DENMONKEY they tend to tip up or down, so even getting the back into the hitch requires a second person or wedging it and getting the height just right.
On concrete not so bad, you can get close and wiggle the trailer on the jockey wheel, but on grass or a slope where you need the trailer brakes on, they’re a bitch.
I’ve hooked ours up solo, but it’s not easy.
It’s going in the bin when I get an Alko...just debating between the ball hitch like yours, or the pin hitch...
