Debugging My Walther P-22 Jam-a-matic 12-10-2022

  • My 1st generation Walther P-22 had been banished to a shelf in my safe frustrated not being able to get through a single 10-round factory magazine without a jam. That was nearly 20 years ago with my then teenage son. I recently field stripped and lubed the pistol to take my grandson shooting whereupon the pistol proved once again just as unreliable as I had remembered it. So this past weekend with two brand-spanking new Walther magazines and three different brands of ammo I marched off to the range solo to debug the issues with this otherwise handy little pistol. Surprisingly this day my original blued factory magazine ran flawlessly. In contrast, the two new Walther stainless mags were ammo dependent, hiccuping on the Winchester USA Target loads but showing themselves somewhat more reliable with the hotter CCI Velociter and Stinger ammo.

This is a clearly the first generation of the pistol and the new factory magazines seem to work well with Velocitor rounds. The stinger casing is slightly larger than the Velocitor and may be the reason you has an issue with the stinger rounds. The new version of the semiautomatic has a "captured" spring. Many owners cite that as an improvement over the OEM model. In CA (purchased in 2019) you get the same "old" technology. The only way to get it equal with the non CA model is to change the un-captured spring to the captured spring. All that being said, the first 200 rounds using Federal Range Pack ammo were fine. Then, as the pistol got more use, they would FTF/FTE. Winchester Super X failed in every respect. I changed to CCI Mini Mags and that was a good first solution. Like you, I found the Velocitor to be hotter than the mini mag, faster and accurate. So the second step on hot loads was the Velocitor. Third came the Aguila hi-velocity ammo (4 different choices). The "Supermaximum" and "Interceptor" equal/exceed the Mini Mag specs. But Aguila has a unique smell to it and does require more frequent cleaning. Tried the Federal "Punch" ammo but I found FTF issues with that ammo. So for reliability for varmits and even, can I say this- self defense, it appears to me that CCI Mini Mags, Supermaximum/Interceptor and Velocitor all seem to fit the bill. They all grab your attention. A little expensive for plinking though. Enjoyed your testing and lubrication seems to also be the key for reliability.

thanks. Your experience only further validates my own observations.

New owner of a P22, jams at least twice per magazine. Cleaned, lubed and using CCI, still a jam-a-matic.

I just got brand new P22. First time at the range - it jams like there in no tomorrow, failure to feed, failure to eject and failure to fire.

If we all wanted semi-reliable 22LR Pistols, then we'd all have Kel-Tec P17's and Taurus TX22's. I like the looks of this Walther..but sooooo glad I didn't buy one!

Just ordered the P22Q. I failed to do the proper research and I'm immediately regretting my decision. 😩 I fell for the beautiful look over the functionality. 😔

You shouldn’t necessarily regret your decision. The more modern P22Q incorporates some improvements over my older P22, notably a different recoil spring and guide rod setup and redesigned magazines. Your experience with the newer version may prove entirely different. The functioning of mine appears ammo-dependent. Many other .22 pistols are as well. Even if you find your newer version is ammo dependent you simply need to find the brand and load the works in yours. 👍🏻😊

@@practicallyshootingI just ordered a ppq 22 at what I thought was a good price $214 otd. I wanted a 22 to cut down the cost at the range, seeing the difference in price between 22 and 9 mm ammo. First , it's a Walther.I thought one of the best names going. It's quite a head scratcher reading reviews which run the gamont of best ever to it stinks. I'm 68 yr old,new to shooting and in my research I've learned most 22s have issues specific to them. I will do as you've noted and find a friendly brand of ammo for starters. Do you recommend any basic mods for reliability? Or just shoot and see how it runs? Thanks.

I have a P22-G and have to tell you there's so much i love about the gun. However, there are a few highly irritating features that make me want to send a profanity packed letter to the lead engineer.
The front site wiggles and comes off regularly. For a gun that does really nest things you'd think they would fix it. EVERYBODY comments and complains about how poor a design it is. That's just one but still, i do love it as finiky as it can be. Keep it clean, polish the feed ramp, don't shoot hollowpoints, and never use it as a EDC if you value your life. Seriously. CCI Mini-Mag 40g copper coated solid points.

For me all I needed was the CCI mini mags and presto. I did the captured guide rod spring just for the hell of it.

You can fix that stupid mag disconnect problem pretty easily.

I would recommend some changes. Of course everyone who has a non captured P22, change it out for a captured unit. Also change out your extractor for an aftermarket unit. Lugus Mfg made a great extractor, but I dont know if they are still in business. Tandemkross also makes one. I suggest polishing your feed ramp with a dremel, use some polishing bits and some flitz. I also recommend using your dremel to grind away some material on the face of the hammer, and on the underside of the slide where the hammer makes contact while the slide cycles..Also grind some material there and on the face of the hammer and polish both to a mirror finish. You will see a significant amount of less drag where the face of the hammer and the underside of the slide make contact. Thereby reducing drag. I also recommend using only ammunition rated as High Velocity. For me in the testing Ive done, Remington Thunderbolt run with no issues. The velocity for Thunderbolts is 1255 fps.

Thank you for the suggestions. I never would have thought about polishing the underside of the slide and face of the hammer but get it. Reducing points of friction there should improve slide velocity.👍🏻
