- I take the Walther P22 to the range and give you my thoughts on it. We also run Federal ammo (1260fps) and CCI Velocitor (1435) through it to see which one does better. A great target gun and a lot of fun to shoot.

A Army Infantryman here, a .22LR is a great selfdefense weapon. Round placement is what matters. Has more than enough power to kill, plus low recoil for very accurate fellow up shots. If you do miss you won't have a round traveling through multiple people or walls, and doors.

Retired LEO here, .22 is Not a good self defense weapon. Rim fire ammo is too unreliable to trust your life to. If you must have a small caliber minimum would be center fire 380 auto. .40 a .45 much better choice.
Whats funny is I have put well over 1k rounds through my P22QD and I have not had a failure to fire. Using Federal Automatic Target Grade I had the same issues with it not providing enough power to rack the slide properly, but I have not had a single round not fire. Right now I'm running Blazer, CCI Mini Mags and Aquila High Velocity and it runs smooth. The Aquila and Blazer are nice due to the price point (2.49 per 50 rd box). The CCI Mini Mag .36 gr HP's is what I keep in it at home. Not my primary self defense, but as john plank said its about shot placement.

Depends, If you are hitting center of mass I would agree, Let someone bust you in the head with a CCI Stinger and you are going away from here.
Also the .22lr caliber killed more people in the United States than any other caliber for about 10 years in a row.
Also 11B here. A well placed shot with a .22 is better than a miss with a 50 bmg

I use CCI mini mags and have never had an issue. It becomes more accepting of other ammo after putting some rounds down range. After about 300 mini mags it became a lot less finicky. I have the 5" barrel, and I really like it.

22 short, long or long rifle can be a very reliable and dangerous caliber for self defense 22 caliber is a very accurate bullet and keeps it's power longer in range than a lot of pistol calibers.
I'll have to disagree with you when you say it wouldn't be carried for self defense

Sadly during the Great ammo shortage of 2020-2021 i bought a ton of thunder bolt .22 ammo for cheap even prior to buying my Walter.
I bought one last week. Took apart as recommended by others. Very very dirty on the inside, still small aluminum shavings in it. Cleaned it.
Kept the slide back all week and took it shooting yesterday. Never had one issue with it. Shot over 500 rounds of AR TACTICLE( 1200FPS) AND CCI MINI-MAG(1235FPS). It is pretty damn accurate.

Totally excellent gun, with a few improvements. I do like it for self-defense, though... and I have had everything else. Never had an issues with jams or misfires.
22 LR is great for self defense, always use what you are most comfortable and well trained with. Biggest thing with all of the issues of reliability seems to me is all from cheap bulk loose. I’ve put well over 300 rounds of cheap Armscore ammo and CCI mini mags along with 200 rounds of the new Winchester silver tip 22LR through the Walther p22 and had zero malfunctions.

what ammo do you shoot out of it? Does it work well with bulk ammo like federal?
waterhead001 cci works really well anything high velocity bulk ammo will cause issues I have 3 p22's the only time I've ever had issues is when I ran bulk ammo
I use remington thunderbolt bulk and it shoots fine. I've only had one fte.
great gun!!! owner of a p22. shoot stingers, velocity rounds. I don't really care to much about the key safety. also when the magazine is out the trigger will not function, another safety procedure. love the gun, great review brother.
I can run 40 grain standard in mine all day, nice video too. Good honest review
thats because the P22 recoil spring was upgraded recently to captive, its much more reliable now.

Shoot CCI, you will never have any malfunction, or any good quality 40 grain
I've had my P22 for over 8 years now and as long as I keep it somewhat cleaned and lubed, it will eat up any bulk or cheap ammo I feed it. It did however take about 300 to 400 rounds to break it in properly. It could of been that I never cleaned or lubricated it when I purchased it from Sportsman's Warehouse. It's the funnest gun I own.
2 untruths...
1 "you wouldn't carry it for self defense" (I do)
2 "you can't shoot low quality ammo in it" (mine was broke in with blazer, never had a malfuction, shot 3k rounds through it before first cleaning)
I just went to the range to try the P22 I got a few weeks ago. Cleaned and oil it before doing so as I was afraid that the issues with it not loading or not liking certain cartridges that are below 1300fps. I was wrong initially...It fired like a dream using Remington Thunderbolt 40g (green box - $42.99/500rnds) with 1255fps. Then I tried the Federal 40g (blue box - $74.99/800rnds) with 1200fps, and it also took that and no misfires or jamming. Next was the CCI Minimag 40g ($54/500rnds) with 1235fps and every round also went through with no problem. After firing 180 rounds switching through those 3 cartridges, the problem started with the Federal. The gun started not going into battery and I had several FTLs and misfires. I actually thought I had a squib a few times. I just bought an Aguila 38g ($41.99/500rnds) with 1280fps cartridges that I will try next. In the meantime, I guess the Federal will be used by my Savage 64 and Citadel Trakr.
I have a Walther p22 and the one I have has the silver slide which kind of helps to prevent jams but I have shot well over 3500 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag hollow points and the only times it has ever jammed was when I put in one of my magazines that is a bit faulty and sits loose meaning it doesn't quite load the round in. The gun is amazing at not jamming and I have no complaints, the reason your gun was jamming was either because you put shitty ammo in it, you have not cleaned your gun or, your gun may have some problem with the slide scraping against a hammer that is down... Mine had that problem too but after some shooting with it and a bit of oil it was fixed.
I just bought a Walther p22 the company must have fixed the cycling problem i can shoot any ammo 1200fps and up in mine but i haven't tried any ammo lower than 1200fps because i don't own any other than that it's a great pistol and very accurate 💯👍

Next time try to show some accuracy, how easy is it to load the mag, are there any aftermarket parts for the gun, maybe a breakdown, sort of a table top review at the range. F them all, do you....

BTW, Alliance Armament makes a "pressure booster" that allows low velocity ammo to work well with this firearm.
Nice and quick review. I would recommend against the intro though. As to the review; I have this gun and they are all a bit different. That said, good ammo like CCI works well. Feed it appropriately.
p22 loves anguila 40grain high velocity ammo, won't jam or fail to eject. try it.

I have a Walther P22 1st. gen. and it eats whatever bulk ammo I feed it. I think you need to break it in a little or maybe get a spring that is a little weaker.
A lot of people give this gun a bad review for failure to feeds , but with a very small amount of filing and polishing in two specific areas this gun will run flawless with even the shitiest ammo.

Glad I bought a M&P 22 compact, as it eats anything without a problem. Too bad the P22 doesn't, as it's a nice looking design.

For as much as you paid for that you should not have to shoot certain ammunition. Buy the S&W 22 compact or the Ruger SR 22
I heard it can be modified so that it feeds anything.. But Id rather just stick to the high velocity ammo...
That is the P22Q NOT the actual original P22.

Update 2021: Walther released a newer model and it shoots any bulk crap you want.
Winchester 1280fps is siiiiiick but it's hit or miss. So anything 1230fps+

Traded my Walther away yesterday- had it two weeks, lost $150 on the trade. Got it for xmas from my wife. Sorriest pistol I ever owned. Got a Ruger SR22 in trade. Instantly all my ftf fte, ftc problems went away. Talked to Walther they told me to only use CCI mini mag. I was, but also wanted to use other ammo. Would not shoot other HI-Vel ammo, and most definitely no non-premium ammo. They said it was in the manual. It's not, only to use 22LR. If it takes a specific cartridge it should be posted on the box. Internet is full of videos on how to modify to make it work . I call BS on this gun. I got the gun to shoot, not have to repair it new out of the box, or send it in new for warranty, or not be able to use it if I can't find special ammo.. Stay away from this Jammin'Jenny.

I've got the same gun. It shots any ammo I feed it. Sounds like you got a bad gun or maybe you need to clean & oil your firearm. I've shot thousands of rounds threw mine no problems....

I finally picked up for my lady to have a self-defense weapon! Nice review man we all get things wrong sometimes no biggie :) How is maintenance for this? I have heard mixed reviews but I watched Sootch do a field strip but it didn't seem too bad.

Has anyone tried CCI Stingers in the P 22?
Yes. They work wonderfully. Standard CCI works most of the time, but my best shooting experiences have involved Stingers or Velocitor. Also, Remington Yellow jackets are pretty good too.
Walther P22 is not a good gun. Im including the 2 times it came back from Walther getting fixed.

I can only shoot higher velocity ammo. Everyone I have talked to at gun stores and gun shows has said the same thing, the P22 doesn't like standard velocity ammo. And you can see the difference in performance in the video. So, if yours is eating everything you feed it then count your blessings. :)
I shoot stingers, mini mags, Remingtons, blazers (which are cci), and whatever I can buy. It's the latest model. I've heard the older models have issues. Especially with stuff like stingers which are a little longer. The stingers do come out pretty hot but no, no modifications whatsoever.
+SlamFireProductions How many shots your gun have ? My first 500 were with high velocity. Then when it got a little bit more used and loose, it shots almost anything, including low speed ammo for the supressor.

POS for me! after 150-200 rounds I'm already showing signs of wear in the receiver. I will keep sending it back till I get one that is better. Machined areas in the Slide look like they been done by an apprentice or a student but certainly does not look like something a real machinist would have machined. I am really disappointed that Made in Germany means so little these days.
And just for the record. I have a Walther PPQ Target that also lacks the quality I would expect from a German product. No more Walther for me, thanks but no thanks.

Read up on the P22 bible, I have had P22 for 8 years, did the Hammer shave and polish, did a slight peen on the extractor, polished the dog ears on the trigger bar. I have thousands of rounds of federal bulk through this pistol after those tweaks. Before it would only shoot Mini Mags reliably. Now it will shoot anything.

I have phoenix arms for $150 that shoots better than this crap. used and abused for years and no malfunctuons. just make sure u get the blue, not the chrome version.
