Mr Richard, it would be interesting to see the use of nitrous on small quantities, early on the powerband to assist spooling the turbo. And also it’s benefits on lowering the charge temperatures and allowing more timing.
This is a very effective practice when we run rotary motors with large turbos. Rotaries have no low end torque, so we obtain it with the nitrous, but in order to “match” the flow of the engine at high rpm you need what typicaly would be considered “giant turbo” per cubic inches.
As an example, i run a peripheral port 20b (2.0) with a 110mm turbo and a 250 shot. Now, the nitrous is “reverse progressive” you could say. We will launch it at 175-250(depending on the track), it will progress to the “max” @ 250 and immediately start tapering in relation to the boost but no less then 75hp. During testing, we found a lot of power up top with the small shot due to the cooling effect mainly, and it allows a bit more timing.

cooling from nitrous is very minimal-there is not enough cold nitrous in relation to the hot air- I have a test up where we used nitrous as the intercooler-it wasn't very effective

David Vizard talked about nitrous helping turbos back in 1979..
He used it as a way of reducing lag on a turboed Ford 2.0 Pinto engine.

For those of us that have tried to tune a boosted setup ourselves, I wonder if adding nitrous is just asking for it. Engines make tons of power with boost and nitrous, until hey don't. : )

Hi Richard, also, very informative on how manual boost controller has the peaks and then dips for boost VS a electronic boost controller boost curve more consistent table top across rpm band! I never knew that! Also will be great to see a follow up video showing a electronic boost controller! Also even how to plumb and wire and electronic boost controller ! Thanks Richard!

They love the nitrous. If you dont put the waste gates right on the bend after the manifolds...put them on a straighter part of the pipe and little at angle..the boost wont jump around like that...its hitting the gates hard with them right on that turn. Cool vid. Keep em coming!

We ended up running a 100 shot on blown Gen 3 Hemi with a Magnasun supercharger as chemical intercooling, was good for 9.1's and much more effective than it's integral intercooler. Holley HP management, dry shot.

I don't mind running a little richer on the nitrous. Any time I've got a single fogger setup I always get concerned about cylinder to cylinder fuel distribution from the fogger nozzle. If it were direct port, no issues, or if we were adding the additional fuel through the injectors. But unless I'm running EGT sensors on each cylinder (or preferably O2 sensors), single fogger setups will always be richer on my watch.

This relatively large turbo seemed to come up in boost pretty early making me think it had a tight turbine AR. I’m wondering if that made the back pressure run higher. If so, could you substitute a bigger AR turbo, like a 1.3 T6 S475 or S480, and use modulated nitrous to get it going early in the rpm range? This would seem to give both good spool up performance and relatively low back pressure at the top. Time for another set of tests!

Richard I have been following you for years! I think I’ve seen every one of your videos, which are great! But I think your putting a lot of confidence into the people watching your videos! I don’t know if you’ve seen any of Joe Simpsons videos from Tempest tuning! He gets tons of builds in like what you see on TH-cam! ( Not just yours either, one of the famous guys who’s cam you tested) & other Low Dollar builds! That are a complete pile of shit 💩! Most people think that because they saw it done that way on the dyno, it’s perfect to run down the road or track that way 🙄🙄🙄🙄! People actually think 🤔 you can just spaghetti shitpile your wiring together & just shove a nitrous nozzle in a rubber & there good to go! I understand it’s just for dyno testing, because we have done it ourselves tons of times! Just watch a couple of his dyno videos! Especially Camaro & Foxbodys, he ends up spending hours & hours just to try to make it into the building for FCK sake! He has refused to take a lot of them! Telling them to take them home & have them rewired, fix the falling apart driveline, fix the shit falling off the car! Then people seem to just bring them back with basically nothing fixed, over & over again 🙄🙄🙄🙄🤯🤯🤯🤯! I think I would mention, just because you think you can, doesn’t mean you should! I would hate to see all this great stuff go away, by someone getting killed or hurting someone else because there nowhere’s near being a mechanic, & really shouldn’t be anywhere near a fast car! Then you hear, but those internet guys did it that way! Just a observation! Because we are starting to see the same garbage in our area! Luckily the shops in my area are busy with legit, correctly built stuff, & they refuse it! But then we start hearing, oh those guys are assholes, because they wouldn’t dyno my car! See where I’m going? I hope I didn’t offend you! Thanks for the great info!

If the boost pressure went up with the nitrous, but the engine ran fatter... Is it possible the nitrous adds mass flow rate to the system and there's less flow at the mouth of the turbo? Is this running on an open-loop fuel table?

And you use about .8lbs every 10 seconds used on a 100 shot. So a lot of people use 150 so that’s 1.2lbs for a 10 second pass and after about 5 passes, that’s 6lbs used and with only 4lbs left, pressures drop lower on the bottle and the 150 shot doesn’t hit as hard as it did when it was full or fuller
