E30 FREEZING Cold A/C!!! Dryer Replace, Charge R134a And Aux Cooling Fan Diagnose!

  • That's right!! Today it may have been only 65F outside, but I was able to make it 20F INSIDE! When you have your A/C system vented to atmosphere for long enough (and it doesn't take long), it's always best practice to replace the Dryer. It's only $15 at FCPEuro (64531466051). Also, the Air Dryer was foulded up due to the leak stuff I put in years ago, the dessicant inside the dryer becomes very ineffective.
    Then we fill with R134a after properly evacuating the system. Very important to remove all moisture from the air conditioning system, but more importantly to ensure that we have no leaks, so this vacuum is super affordable and comes with everything you need (Amazon Link Below):
    www.amazon.com...
    When we filled, it was confirmed through ambient temp gauge only. I did not advise actual pressures or capacities since this is a custom setup with a different condenser and compressor, but I can assure you it does not take much! Took 12lbs for me.
    Then we take a quick break and work on why my aux fan does not turn on when the engine gets hot. I have a SPAL 16" Pusher fan hooked up, but the fan does not work when the engine gets hot. Why? I think it's the radiator temp sender and I''ll prove how!

    Hi, just discoved your videos today, its all good content, we need to get you more views. Can I ask if you managed to connect the AC signal through the ECU or did you bypass it? As far as I know the MSS52 ECU uses a CAN input while the E30 like a E31, E36 and other older BMWs uses a cable switched by the climate control.

    Can the A/C condenser be changed out , without removing the front bumper and front grill?

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You go from the engine bay side. It’s actually preferred that way. Just need to drain coolant, remove radiator. Still need to unhook the condenser lines and the fan wiring. That’s about it

      The condenser can be removed from either end actually. Need to remove the 2 hoses, fan connection, and the 2 10mm screws on the core support

    So, it looks you will be replacing the rad thermoswitch then right?
    My E30 has the old two switch system and also mine doesn't work so well.
    I'm getting close to just getting a switch inside the cabin and just turn it on manually, it's becoming a pain really.

    • @hozisalehi
      @hozisalehi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also in the service manual, it says in order to test the switch, you need to take it out, and then put it in a pan with water, turn on the stove, check the water temp, and then at the correct temp, I think it was 91C for low speed and 99C for high speed, check if you have continuity. If you don't, replace.

    • @Garageaholic
      @Garageaholic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hozisalehi Yes, you can do the stove test. But honestly using a heat gun is much easier. And typically can easily get the switch to that 220F temp where it would close. remember the system worked correctly before a component in the system failed. If you can identify the component(s) that failed, then just replace that and if that didn't fix it, then you likely misdiagnosed and you need to go back to the drawing board. It's always trial and error. If you have the BMW Schematics handy, you can see how the electrical system works and identify it pretty easily that way.. I hope that helps. but if you have a specific issue, let me know the details and I can help you. contact@garageaholic.build.
