I agree I am not a mechanic but I think I am going to do this one myself in the morning my car AC compressor is making a ton of noise and it's getting louder and louder so I think I make it my hands dirty you know grease dirty
Thanks for the video. I just changed the bearing on my 2002 Suburban and your video was spot on. A tip if like to forward. On the Suburban the compressor is surrounded by the idler arm, frame and radiator hose which made getting it apart a challenge. When I removed the bolt in the middle of the compressor driver I used an old metal oil filter wrench to hold the compressor driver in place while I turned the bolt. Worked perfectly in the confined space. Thanks again.
Great information for DIYrs. Learnt a lot of this when repairing customers A/C systems. The Brown dust around the clutch is always a good indication of a failing bearing. I have also found the spacer will need to be thinner or take out a shim or two if they are fitted, this compensates for the wear on the pulley and hub faces in use. always ensure the airgap is back within spec as to greater gap can cause non-engagement or worse overheating of the magnet coil. @@shua2514 yes in the case of the bearing not being noisy, if yours is noisy when compressor is engaged, then that is inside wear, so yes in that case I would replace the compressor (making sure to replace the receiver dryer as well) Cheers

i have a 1978 dodge motorhome and over the last few days I've had this squealing coming from under the hood near the alternator and air compressor , tried spraying WD40 around the belts, still get the squealing. you just made my life so much easier because of this video because i was dreading how much this was going to cost me. you just gave me a quick and simple way to see if its the bearing and if it is replace it THANK YOU!

Very well done clear explanation. One small point the bearing your refer to is the AC clutch bearing, not the AC compressor bearing, which would be inside the compressor. Additionally you should be able to check the clutch activation coil with an ohm meter to see if there is continuity. No continuity through the coil = a burned out coil. Since the compressor is near the 12 V battery in the car, you should be able to use a small clip wire to test the coil in the fashion you did. I hope you are correct about the polarity of the colored wires. It might be a good idea to use an ohm meter to check for continuity to ground before apply power, or you could also check for voltage in the wire with either a volt meter or pin poke tester that uses a light which is usually easier than a volt meter.

Just buttoning everything up! I had ball bearings pouring out of the old center bearing. I cursed a couple of times, because I did everything with the compressor mounted. Came back upstairs to check about those spacer washers. THANK YOU for taking the time to put this video out...SUBSCRIBED!

It’s just the vents will continue to push air out even a little bit when driving , until it fully closes the ac port If it never stops coming out the port isn’t closing all the way

Thanks for the technical explanation. Understanding how something works really helps me understand what could be wrong. The AC in my truck was not very cold so I kept adding refrigerant. Now it's fully charged and still won't get cold. Thinking maybe clutch is slipping or something.
Hey Gary, I've got a problem with my car's ac compressor as well. I think you could help somehow. The situation is when I turn the ac on, there's a knocking sound coming from the compressor, it also causes the engine to somehow lose power. And when the ac is turned off, you can just barely hear the knocking sound. I'm sure turning the ac on triggers it, but the ac still blows cold air. What do you think is the cause? And what should I do with it? Thank you! It's a 2011 Nissan Grand Livina.
hi adrian. first question. are tyou sure the knocking is coming from the compressor? Sounds will travel through the engine block so you might think its coming from there. If it is a knock to me sounds like the engine hit one way to find out is to remove the ac belt to eliminate it. . I've never really heard of a compressor knocking except the bearing but they mostly grind and squeal when worn. Although in my experience with ac like I said never heard of one knocking. There's always a first time. lol. So try that and let me know what you come up with.

4:40 so if your AC works fine but makes the squeal or other noises, its that bearing thats gone bad, you dont really need a clutch kit with coil or the full compressor, you only need to take it apart and replace that bearing?
Yes, this is the conclusion I’m coming to. I was trying to replace the coil, the bearing, and the clutch. I’m having a hard time getting that snap ring out of the coil.

@@totallyunmemorable You don't! If you don't already have the socket you need, you buy one. Most of the time, the sockets used to press the old out and the new in aren't going to be the same size.
AC messed up last week and I just ordered my ac clutch/coil kit just now ! I've always replaced my compressors but after seeing your video I've gotta try this !
I never knew about the magnet + clutch part. Now I want to use it to hook up a 2nd alternator with on/off switch to lessen the load on the engine at times when its not needed to charge up a alternate power bank.. Thanks.

I have a 2006 Scion xB that the clutch is always working even if the switch inside is in the off position. Do you think that maybe the coil is bad? Great video thanks for sharing your video
Worth mention, although less common rust/debris/dirt might get the coil assembly stuck. A detail easily tested with a 12V source and a piece of wire. BTW a 9V battery usually do the trick and it's way easier to manipulate than a 12V battery. ;-)
Love this video. I would say clutch fail is the most common reason vehicle air conditioners malfunction, after switch, relay and associative electrical is ruled out. But you don't have to remove the compressor. You can use a jumper wire on the relay in the fuse to determine if the clutch is engaging. Much less work. And you save the refrigerant charge!
Also, keep a can of contact cleaner on hand. It's much easier to spray some solvent on oxidized terminal connectors than replacing parts and wiring harnesses.
do i need to check if the new compressor have oil before i replace it? cause the car mechanic told me if do not have the compressor oil inside before, so it will broken direct when i try to star it. thank you for answer
Oil is PAG (polyalkylene glycol) - can buy from specialist auto shops; new compressors always fully charged with PAG; POE oil specified for hybrid vehicles as not electrically conductive. PAG is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the atmosphere if given a chance) and that's why you keep air/moisture out of the system.
Great info. Doing an engine rebuild to keep the car rolling for a few more years. Compressor seized, so I have an idea of how to open, check, fix and install. I will replace the comp, o rings, desecant, valve etc after a few more pay packets.

A couple of years ago I removed a shim on my 260K 1998 Frontier to reduce the gap to fix it, didn't even need to take the AC belt off to do that !

4:40 so if your AC works fine but makes the squeal or other noises, its that bearing thats gone bad, you dont really need a clutch kit with coil or the full compressor, you only need to take it apart and replace that bearing?
Yes, this is the conclusion I’m coming to. I was trying to replace the coil, the bearing, and the clutch. I’m having a hard time getting that snap ring out of the coil.

4:55 The easiest thing to do is just use the old bearing to press the new one in, rather than worrying about finding a socket of the correct size.
But how do you get the old one out without an appropriately sized socket?
@@totallyunmemorable You don't! If you don't already have the socket you need, you buy one. Most of the time, the sockets used to press the old out and the new in aren't going to be the same size.
AC messed up last week and I just ordered my ac clutch/coil kit just now ! I've always replaced my compressors but after seeing your video I've gotta try this !

The a/c clutch fuse blows after a few minutes of it being turned on. Would that be a problem with the coil?
I never knew about the magnet + clutch part. Now I want to use it to hook up a 2nd alternator with on/off switch to lessen the load on the engine at times when its not needed to charge up a alternate power bank..

Thanks! I had an intermittently working a/c and I fixed it by removing one of the shims and closing the clutch gap. Your video helped a ton.
Thanks for the idea. My A/C works intermittently as well. As a first step I'll try closing that gap by removing a washer. Hope that fixes it.

1:55 if you have enough room in front of the ac compressor then yes. If not, no.

Some cars you can but a shop most likely won't do it. You can D.I.Y. and see if that works but sometimes it's the AC compressor shaft that is bad too

I have a 2006 Scion xB that the clutch is always working even if the switch inside is in the off position. Do you think that maybe the coil is bad?

Id check your relay first. It could be stuck causing it to always stay on even if the switch is not
Worth mention, although less common rust/debris/dirt might get the coil assembly stuck. A detail easily tested with a 12V source and a piece of wire. BTW a 9V battery usually do the trick and it's way easier to manipulate than a 12V battery. ;-)

Love this video. I would say clutch fail is the most common reason vehicle air conditioners malfunction, after switch, relay and associative electrical is ruled out.
But you don't have to remove the compressor. You can use a jumper wire on the relay in the fuse to determine if the clutch is engaging. Much less work. And you save the refrigerant charge!
Also, keep a can of contact cleaner on hand. It's much easier to spray some solvent on oxidized terminal connectors than replacing parts and wiring harnesses.
do i need to check if the new compressor have oil before i replace it?
cause the car mechanic told me if do not have the compressor oil inside before, so it will broken direct when i try to star it.

New compressor have full oil don't worry
Oil is PAG (polyalkylene glycol) - can buy from specialist auto shops; new compressors always fully charged with PAG; POE oil specified for hybrid vehicles as not electrically conductive. PAG is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the atmosphere if given a chance) and that's why you keep air/moisture out of the system.

Great info. Doing an engine rebuild to keep the car rolling for a few more years. Compressor seized, so I have an idea of how to open, check, fix and install. I will replace the comp, o rings, desecant, valve etc after a few more pay packets.

Not that complicated - will need to go get a pair of circlip (snap ring) pliers though to remove/install the circlips/snap rings.
