No matter how many times I watch this movie, I just can’t get over “No Diggity”. This is the embodiment of Cool Teens Doing Ninja Things. This is probably the most I’ve laughed in theaters. I’m currently 18 and I had an absolute blast with this movie. I’m still a bit salty RISE got cancelled, but at the same time, I can’t be mad with how amazing this movie was. As always, Leonardo still remains my favorite Turtle since 2012.

What I specially liked about this movie is that they never felt more like brothers than in this one. Usually there is always something pulling them apart like Raph bullying Mikey or everyone zoning out when Donnie nerds out on something but here they stick together through thick and thin. I got 3 brothers and our personalities line up to an almost scary degree with our favorite turtles. • @kozekyto
      @kozekyto ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@danielserrano929 Just because two films have similar styles doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. And honestly, Spiderverse has a VASTLY different style to TMNT. Their animation, modeling, character design, story-telling style, etc are both very unique. Disney’s or Marvel for example have had the same “style” for well over a decade now, but that doesn’t seem to deter people. Heaven forbid artists and animators are allowed more expression and release 3 movies that are outside of the “status quo”. 3D animation has already “been done” for decades but it’s still a vastly expressive medium. You can’t discount it based on “it looks similar so I won’t see any others” alone.
To each their own, but that’s just a disappointing and (forgive me) stupid mindset to have about more artistically styled movies.

Regardless of how the "crush" plays out, I do appreciate that it had a purpose in moving the plot forward. That was a very easy and clean way to explain how Leo went from a tattle tale to also wanting to be accepted by the human world (instead of always raining on his brother's parade, even if he still wanted it too deep down inside). Splinter made the mistake of punishing Leo for his honesty about where they were in the beginning of the film, he and his brothers were grounded, his brothers were mad at him and that sucked for him, but April, talking to April, having an immediate crush on her... yep that's how "Teacher's Pet" Leo went along with the plan to take down Superfly. There might have been other ways to do it, but I think this works a little better than how the 2012 show did it with April and Donnie.
It's a kid's movie, so uh, not expecting too much thought on how a human/turtle relationship would work past the end credits. Doubt the kids will either. I really am ready for it to go either way who cares at least she isn't a skinny red head like all the other times. Gargoyles, if anyone remembers that show, had a Gargoyle/human thing that didn't feel weird. You're exactly correct that Leo needs to come into his own as a leader and I think the crush on April might be one of the things he let's go, or at least stops focusing on, as he matures.
I also have a theory about this new version of the turtles. Our main three movie villains will be Superfly, Shredder, and Krang. For Superfly we have a story about Teenage Mutants. For Shredder I am hoping we get more elaboration on Splinter's backstory, he said he was a rat in his prime when he was mutated but weirdly seemed to lack a lot of feral traits. I think he was a pet. I think there is a chance he was Hamato Yoshi's pet and doesn't want his sons to know he was a pet. So the the second movie will introduce the Ninja aspect and maybe more of Splinter's past. The third movie will give us our full Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Maybe a reunion of what makes these four brothers different from humans as they go up against the Krang? Mutant = negative association. This first movie being a mutant is a hindrance to their chance to be regular teens. Turtles = positive. Some difference are good okay, and maybe even a strength.
I feel the way this movie completely scrapped the "ninja" part was on purpose. The next movie will touch on it in a fresh exciting way I hope because that teaser at the end.... oh boy. The whole fandom is about to eat.

    • @Lindraws04
      @Lindraws04 ปีที่แล้ว +22

If it’s ok to add to the splinter pet theory, I think the reason Splinter started hating humans is because Shredder killed his owner, who happens to be Hamato Yoshi. Like how it happened in the 2003 series and the original comics. I hope this makes sense

I agree. I think people should lean in more into asymmetrical designs, and there should be more variety in design. When you walk around in public you aren't expecting everyone to be attractive to you, you just see them as what they are (a person) and move on. So why is it not the same in media? Why is it such a big deal when a character isn't a physical ideal? This also applies to live action media, in my opinion, it has bothered me for a while the thought that a really talented actor may be turned down because they don't have the 'right look'. And how actors are pressured into surgeries to maintain an idealized appearance. It seems unethical to me. There is so much more we can do with our art, there is no need to have this arbitrary boundaries and limit ourselves to the absolute ideal of beauty. Other things should be free to be explored. Mediocre and ugly appearances should be accepted and not reviled, and also I think there should be more protagonists with visible disabilities. Things like malformed faces. Because as of now a large majority of the disabled characters are shown as villains which is sad. It should be accepted that appearance and morality do not have a correlation, and there is nothing wrong with being disabled.

Something I noticed almost right away was how the main cast- The Turtles, Splinter, April- were more symmetrical while the antagonists and background characters were asymmetrical. I assume this was to make them more recognizable while also making them easier to focus on (because them being Symmetrical in a World of Asymmetrical still makes them stand out).
I also thought the crush was cute, I don't see them ever getting together, but I could see the one-sided crush trope continue into the next movie. Maybe it's used as a tool to help Leo and April grow/develop? Or just left open-ended.
I honestly prefer Rise and Mutant Mayhem over 2012 just because the series was more serious and at times dark (and the crushes- Karai X Leo / April X Donnie- were unwatchable even as a kid and annoyed me lmao). Splinter was awesome in character design, humor, and personality- I just wish he was more familiar(?) with The Turtles. When he died it broke my heart and I never watched it consistently after. My brother still loves that series and its prob his favorite iteration- I definitely wanna go back and watch it at some point, but overall I think I enjoy more light-hearted, silly/goofy humor sprinkled with sentimental and serious/intense moments- a lot of people consider marketed towards the younger demographic.
    Edit:
It's also so cool being able to recognize what iteration of TMNT inspired characters/designs/plots- just makes me feel extra knowledgeable lol

But this TMNT movie looks both awesome and an entertaining fun watch that I'm so excited to see. Love how the Turtles literally feel and sound also act like genuine super young teens of today, as well as the Mutants designs and the overall very gritty grungy graphic style of everything. So hyped to see this movie. 👍🏾

This movie looks like what would happen if you put every 7th grader from 1990 through 1994's who could draw the basic character designs, put all our sketches and styles into a blender, and then filtered it into 3d. It's so smart, it's so honest.

I always thought it was kinda weird that Splinter was a human that mutated into a giant rat while the turtles were just turtles that grew in size and adapted human-like sentience. I don't remember much of the tv show, though i watched it religiously as a kid, but I always had this feeling Splinter was the pet rat of a martial arts sensei who merely adapted his master's behavior and teachings. I don't really care what race April is in the series, as long as she kept her personality, wittiness and dream to become a famous reporter. I doubt people liked the character because she was a certain race, but that's just me. Excited to see where the series goes from here

Awesome video!! I’m only halfway through rn but I thought it’d be fun to share-the cartoons actually have tackled the turtles being known outcasts before, in the 87 version! The turtles in that version are well known to the New York public the whole show, and there’s quite a few episodes that deal with the turtles personal feelings on having to still live as outcasts and having to often fight to be accepted. There’s multiple episodes/storylines where people turn the cities opinion back against mutants again, or episodes where they wish they had somewhere to live that was truly openly accepting of them. Obviously these plots are handled with the shows usual goofy lightheartedness (although they do get more serious as the seasons go on), but it’s still a consistent thread for that version and it’s one of the reasons why I’m so hype for this new iteration! We haven’t really had a show play with them as known almost superheroes like 87 did since, it’s really fun as a major fan of the old version to see these concepts be used in a fresh and exciting way!

This movie was a solid 8/10 for me.
Characterization wise? I don’t think I’ve ever loved Leo so much. He’s such a dork and really tries to take care of his family! You can see that burden he has where it’s less of being the leader of a squad and just the struggles of being a big brother. But he’s also still able to be a kid and joke around with them, likely due to this Splinter treating the turtles like kids and not soldiers.
Donnie is also great. The fact that he is a genuine AUTHENTIC nerd who likes anime? Mwah!
Raph and Mikey get the short end of the stick, unfortunately. For me, Mikey used to always be my favorite for this sense of swagger he possessed compared to his brothers. Like yeah he jokes alot, but he’s also really cool. In this film he’s kinda just… wholesome boy. Which is fine, I can work with that.
Raph, however? Kinda disappointing. Especially since he’s ALSO been my favorite turtle! I feel like this film has a very poor representation for why Raph is the way he is. He represents the sense of awareness that all the turtles are cursed with. He feels like a freak, and oftentimes the world instills that idea. Oftentimes people will say he’s all about just one upping Leo, but that’s not quite true. He’s a sad character honestly, and to see him just be reduced to a brat with rage problems is… extremely disheartening. Though maybe the complexity of the character will come back in future movies where the turtles are older.
April is… fine. I do appreciate how they make her more grounded and offer a sister like connection with the turtles as she also feels like a freak of sorts. Though, I prefer Rise April… a lot more💀? That April also had the struggle of feeling like a freak (shown in multiple episodes), but ultimately learned to accept it and acknowledge that that’s okay! And with that boost in confidence, she’d become a powerhouse by kicking mutant butt with a grin! There’s just so much more spunk in that April that kinda has you shrugging your shoulders at MM April.
Splinter is fine. Obviously not as good as arise Splinter, which it obviously takes heavy inspo from, but still okay! I appreciate how they gave him of an arc of sorts regarding prejudice. They handled it quite well honestly in a very emotionally vulnerable way. I would honestly love to see more of him.
Animation wise everything is grunge-fully gorgeous. It all looks like an indie comic you’d find in the back of a gas station. A nice contrast to the more pristine look of the Spiderverse films.
Plot wise? I’m kinda snoring. While I can appreciate giving the turtles a heartwarming and relatable goal of acceptance, I think the execution is rather bland, especially when things go exactly- EXACTLY how Donnie planned it. Take down the bad guy, get accepted by the world. I almost feel like it would’ve been more appropriate if the Turtles had defeated Superfly, but the news reports would still see them all as the villains. It would just show an ultimate selflessness to the turtles, as well as a layer of tragedy over them. Then again, this is a kid’s movie and to tell kids that they may never be accepted but that’s okay is perhaps too grim of messaging to deliver.

As a fan of the tmnt forever, I will say the turtles talking like adults in most versions makes sense as the first comics are more adult oriented. They stab and slice and cut and snap necks and kill Foot clan members. They'd be more grown up in that case.
Making them more teens in this, especially since it's geared more for kids, is fine. I'm just giving my interpretation of why they act more adult sometimes.

I'm just going to say it but I think its weirder that people would give so much attention to the crush that leo has when his only frame of reference to relationships would be the human world but also the literal point of the movie is about how the turtles are just as human as anyone else. Like the running theme is about accepting someone's humanity rather than forcing them to earn it. Its very weird that people would put up barriers to what is basically a silly teen crush aside from aesthetics and how quickly we are weirded out by that despite the fact that the movie is being praised by how much the turtles remind them of literal human teenagers. But I guess it does prove that when the aliens come we will pretty much district 9 them over trivial shit.

I hope this series gets a chance to progress I’d like to see them grow up and experience serious things and mature without losing themselves entirely.

this movie is definitely mid. the childish behavior is just too much of a child. I saw things I would never say or do as a teenager. the animation style was good. But I miss the darkness. Leo's Crush on April was so annoying. Compared to Donnie's on April he was cute to her but he was just cringe. And what's the big topic? They wanna become famous. To get liked by ppl. Yes that's what teens what but not the TMNT. Not for me. They wanna be heros not celebraties. I am a fan since I was little and watched TMNT 2012 and I'm saying it's top tier how should a teenage hero league been written. It wasn't always serious and not always jokingly. Perfect balance. This movie wasn't a bit dark.

I took a blaxploitation class this semester for my sophomore year, and when i watched the movie iver Thanksgiving, i realized immediately that Superfly was named after the 70's movie Superfly.

This has to be the most outrageous title I have ever read.
And why the hell did they make April black?

When splinter fought to save his sons, it gave MAJOR old chackie chan fight scene vibes. Most favorite part of the show

You guys reference the spider verse so much but forget to mention the ninja turtles did it first, jumping between universes to interact with themselves. Turtleverse is the OG verse

I think, when people are saying that, they mean in terms of love and care and having a unique artstyle. Not story and plots.
