I love how the art style manages to look kind of gritty and dirty like the OG comics but keeps the vibrance of the cartoons and is still 100% its own thing
_Into the Spiderverse_ really was a cultural reset. In a time where it seemed like every studio and indie animation student out there was animating using the same generic art style in Blender, it seemed like 2D animation was dying. So it was a breath of fresh air to see a project that combined 2D and 3D beautifully. It led to other creative animation styles like in _Arcane, Mitchell and the Machines, The Bad Guys, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Nimona,_ etc. and this movie is no exception.
Kinda ironic that Disney did it first with their ‘Paperman’ short (back in 2012), but failed to do anything with that animation style (making excuses, like “it takes too much time”) until recently [Wish]. I guess it’s their turn playing “copycat” (in a way), as they were technically the first to animate that way, but now they’re one of the last animation studios to make a film in that style.
I thought the whole Leo being the one to have a crush on April in this iteration was just cute in a sense that seeing Leo, in most iterations is the serious leader having a bit of a dorky side like he did in 2012, but this time being a mess whenever he speaks to April, not helped that his brothers knew he has a crush on her. Unlike Donnie and Mikey in the 2012 and Bay movies who are just openly creepy and straight up hitting on her as they are portrayed more like adults than teens which can get iffy. In Mutant Mayhem's case, Leo's crush on April is just that, a crush. No creepy stalking, no openly hitting on he, just being a harmless cute mess.
His crushing moments was actually enjoyable just because of that and definitely was something I didn't mind. It wasn't happening all the time either and just in small moments, plus I don't mind at all of it not ever being a thing since not every crush ends with a relationship, and just remains a friendship. It was cute seeing him immediately do his best to help her out
I feel like I'm one of the rare few who likes more serious Leo but only in part because of what Michelangelo said in the 2003 show. I can't exactly remember what he said, but it was during Leo's depression arc, where his brothers were starting to notice the change in his personality. From someone they could go to for support to someone who was almost always snappish, and hostile. Mikey said that Leo being Leo allowed for them to be who THEY are-Mikey can goof off, Raph can be his hotheaded top side adventuring self, Don can stay in his lab. If Leo were to be less serious, less strict, more goofy and nerdy, then one the others wouldn't take him as seriously as they should with orders, and two it would make it seem like he doesn't care when he obviously does.
Leo was a hot mess in this film and it was kind of adorable seeing him act like that instead of almost always calm composed leader. That and the film establishing that he longs for that kind of connection with someone else definitely makes you wanna root for the guy.
Idk about the 2012 but the Bay movies weren't that creepy. I think Mikey was more so joking about her being his gf and it makes sense for a teen (specially Mikey) to flaunt himself in front of his more serious brothers.
and it makes sense with how many tutorials both good AND BAD are out there. Can't tell you how many art tutorials I've seen on this site. I've just learned how to do that awesome glowing effect via traditional art you always see in digital art. I can't draw digital to save my life. But traditional? Hail yeah, so I wanted to learn how to do that effect, and I went straight to TH-cam. The media we consume can't stay in the past forever. It fits for the time frame it was made in, but not now. Not when everyone has a mini computer in their pocket.
@@Charles-1920it’s not any different then splinter learning ninjitsu from reading a book or watching Hamato Yoshi and emulating those moves. I mean in Rottmnt the boys learned some of their moves from the old action movies their dad was in.
I know this might sound weird, but i loved how UGLY the characters in this movie look. So much animation feels overly polished and sanitized and pretty, it's pretty refreshing to see something like this around
I'm glad this franchise continues to renew itself. I loved it as a kid, and while I haven't been involved in it anywhere near as much as I used to, I see it as great that newer generations get to have fun with it as I did 😊
If you loved the 80's 90s version you will love this one. Its amazing and very reminiscent of its old predecessor. Just the character design alone was good enough to reel me in. They actually put back the teen to the ninja turtles 🐢🐢🐢🐢
Sorry but I too grew up watching tmnt as a kid, and Im disgusted at the political BS in this movie. It has absolutely nothing to do with the originals.
I understand getting tired of having April/turtle relationships, but I appreciate that Leo's crush was more innocent and a decent device for the turtles to get involved in the human world. It was in no way as creepy and off putting as the 2012 version. I'm surprised there was no mention of the other relationship in the film; the rat/roach romance had me more than a bit confused. Splinter says she's his age, but she was a baby in the beginning of the movie! Did she age faster than all her siblings? The others looked older than the turtles but I guess it's because they were made first? The ages had me a bit confused. Though I am happy for Splinter, glad he found someone who loves him back. Also found it funny that his relationship was foreshadowed earlier in the film. Hopefully his current one ends better than that one.
it was also just kind of realistic for the story, them meeting this random girl their age lol. I also love that they give a guy character this more traditionally feminine objective usually left for "girls" in movies, it's such a neat little subversion, that works so well, and just questions societys idea that a boy just wants to fight bad guys and be strong, but instead can also just want a wholesome want for a relationship too sometimes :)
Dont forget that Splinter said at the start that he was a adult rat, so when he mutated he was an adult mutant, so its safe to assume the cockroach was an adult before she mutated as well
I would actually love a TMNT story to be told one day with an older TMNT where they are the masters like Splinter and of course their Splinter would be long passed away in their story, and they just focus on a changing future where the world don’t need them anymore and kinda forgot about them, yet their stories are still told by some people like myths and legends. I think they should either get thrown into a dimension where they have to train younger versions of themselves that were taken in and raised by Shredder instead of Splinter. Yeah, their younger counterparts would be in the Foot Clan. Or they could just focus on a story where one of them starts up a new Foot Clan, either Leo or Raph and they try to tell their other brothers that their new Foot Clan serves the people and fights for good against criminals all over New York, but their other brothers don’t see it that way and it leads to conflict. I don’t care how the story would be told, I just want to see an adaptation of TMNT where they are all old, wise and masters of their crafts. I could also imagine Michelangelo opening up chains of Mikey’s Pizza Parlors all over the country making him a successful business mutant who does what he actually loves. Donatello could easily find himself working for NASA, FBI, CDC, or any other places where his talents are utilized to their fullest and of course to help the planet and humanity. I would like to see Raphael as a Private Investigator who kinda drinks a lot, and kinda misses the glory days of when he and his brothers got together to fight crime and fool around as a bunch of siblings. He’s kinda sad in this story, but he could still fight pretty good despite being older and drinking alcohol a lot. Leonardo on the other hand, would be working in MMA/UFC as a trainer, teaching people how to fight and defend themselves, he also gained a lot of notoriety for being one of the best coaches/teachers in the UFC, and even used to compete at a time before he became too old to compete at a high level. Behind the scenes of his celebrity status, he is building a new Foot Clan along with some of his trained fighters, business connections and rich elites who Leo is using to spread his brand of Foot Clan globally, in his mind, he wants to overpower the people in power who run the world and teach his Foot Clan honor, loyalty, humility, respect and most importantly peace, and to do that, he has to use the resources of the bad people around him, in order to overpower and defeat them. The sad thing is that Leo fails to realize that a lot of people have to suffer for his dream to become a reality. That’s how my story would be if it was a story about the old wise TMNT.
I think they were portrayed JUST young enough it missed my personal relatability mark lol 😭. They remind me more of young teens in middle school than of the teens in high school I’ve come to expect (and just remember better tbh, but maybe I just knew a lot of comfortable people). Still, it’s way more endearing than watching the grown monsters in Micheal Bay be labeled as teens, and I suppose it’s nice rep for kids who are still figuring out their adolescence. It was a fun change of pace for sure! And much more believable.
No it doesn't. They look like middle schoolers at best, not teenagers. And they're all terrible voice actor. The 1990 cast and all the classic TMNT voice actors who voiced the turtles along the years are vastly superior to those kids in every single way. Also "Teenage" doesn't mean "STUPID" and John Hughes explained that to us very well.
@InevitableOption-ic2vx"i don't know what to tell you" you don't have to tell me anything, it's common sense you don't cast a teenager who sounds like an 8 year old
The thing about the turtles having a crush on April is one of the reasons why Rise is my favorite adaptation of the franchise because April’s relationship with the turtles is a sibling relationship first and foremost, and not to mention how the show just immediately have April and the turtles being friends from the start. Especially since how 2012 shows and the Micheal Bay made it so weird and uncomfortable.
@@xanderg.1070 to be fair, the 2012 make sence because Donnie is a teenager and he never meet a female in his life and April didnt though he is in love with her because he is a mutant and she is a human and she know he is the smartest out of them
Same here. While Mutant Mayhem still did have an April crush, I love how subtle and simple it was. They didn't downright make it creepy and obvious like 2012 and the Bay movies. It's just a teen boy crushing on a girl
This might be my one of my favorite iterations of TMNT. Spider-Verse definitely made an impact with its animation style, the animation and story was great . And I was not expecting Seth Rogen to kill it with this movie.
Yeah, I'm surprised how well Seth was able to recreate a comedy that feels reminiscent of his old work like Superbad, while also remembering the rating bracket they have to work in, while still teetering an edge and having some wink-wink-nudge-nudge jokes thrown in, but still just having a lot of genuinely funny, appropriate for all ages humor that mostly lands running throughout the whole movie. I can't imagine that was easy to do, but man did they nail it and make me excited to see that energy hopefully continue with the series and sequels.
I loved how corny the jokes were because they fit the young voice actor. It was a bunch of teens goofing off and was definitely my favorite parts of the movie
This is one of those pieces of media I look at and go, "Don't like the art style, but respect the heck out of it." Rise was more my cup of tea, but it's obvious that both versions had art teams that put their absolute everything into what they were doing. And special kudos to this team for giving CGI such powerful claymation vibes, the texturing is INSANE!!!
I really wish we would get back to the 2003 format where April was more like a sister to them, than a romantic interest. It just makes sense. It certainly makes more sense than one of them pining after her cause to me that can just cause rifts between the family dynamic and NO ONE WANTS THAT. I always loved in the 2003 show that April and the Turtles were just PLATONIC. And it made anything they did for her feel more GENUINE because of that, that they really cared about her as a friend or sister. And it made anything she did for them all the more genuine as well. Like to put things in perspective, this woman in the 03 show literally stood against HUN while Leo was nearly comatose and his brothers were fighting a horde of Foot. She helped them reclaim their home in New York, she and Casey took them in because they're FAMILY not by blood but by bond. Donatello got super freaked after the episode "Bad Day" and HAD to call her and Casey not cause he LOVED her romantically or anything like that, but because he genuinely cares about her and wanted to make sure she and Case were safe. And that to me is way more heartwarming. Having one of them be into her just makes things feel weird. BUT aside from that, I'm loving all the positive praise this movie is getting. It looks like there's already shows planned around it, a sequel, so I'm all for more TMNT content. It's really kind of incredible that the franchise finds new ways to reinvent itself, while still feeling true to what TMNT is as a franchise. Every new generation should honestly get a new iteration of the Turtles, and it's fun to see people compare and contrast each iteration to see where the pros and cons lie with each version.
not big of a deal but i also do hope maybe we could have her be an adult again, cause ever since nick bought the franchise she has been portrayed as a teen
I'm betting that nothing will really come of it. The Turtles have crushed on April in other continuities and aside from the 2012 show it doesn't really go that far. And April in this movie seems to think the Prom invite was a friend thing. They just need to introduce Casey in the sequel and we'll be golden.
Ditto - part of why I like Rise, to be honest, they do a good job at making her feel like part of the family, and it was so REFRESHING to see a character like her be so full of personality with absolutely none of that personality hinging on romance with her male besties.
This honestly might be my favourite TMNT movie as the teenage voice actors truly make these characters feel organic and even ironically humanized in a way that makes you love them and want to see them grow and the choice to have them as actual teenagers is an inspiring choicethat phenomenally worked. I also love the animation and how it feels messy and filthy in a good way that really resonates with the characters and story. I really love the ending especially, seeing how the turtles and mutants are actually accepted by humanity and get a chance to live semi normal lives so early in their carers is such a bold and beautiful arc that is very refreshing for the Turtles. I'm especially excited for the implications of what their lives will be like in the sequel and what Shredder will be like as he appears to be less of a crime leader and more of a bounty hunter, similar to Kraven the Hunter and it's be gut wrenching to see the Turtles and Mutants all get hunted down by Shredder
Since this movie is going to have a sequel *and* a spin-off series, I wonder how they will feature the TMNT balancing their newfound lives of being "normal" teenagers while still fighting crime! 🤓
I can buy the nearby cities and neighborhoods around the area of New York they live in generally more or less accepting the Turtles and the other mutants, barring some dug in bigots and growing pains here and there, but I wonder what that looks like for tourists to New York. Do people not in the know just see giant anthropomorphic turtles walking the streets and say "HOLY JUMPING JESUS WHAT THE F**K IS THAT?!??" and the local Bodega owner making their bacon egg and cheese just says "That's Leo, and you're being very rude. Any questions?"?
This might be a weird take, but I kind of liked the Leo crushing on April. For me, Leo and Raph are the characters in this franchise that can either be hit or miss and there is no in between for me. They are either great or boring. And I think Leo crushing on April brought his character a breath of fresh air, because it wasn't his usual "I am dealing with the responsibility" shtick he is always lumped with. Side note, Raph was my fav in this movie. Usually my fav is Michelangelo, as I love the funny characters. But Raph was the one who got the most laughs out of me this time. So he won my heart in this movie.
The Spiderverse effect wad the best thing to ever happen to animation and I gladly will go watch this movie just because of the amazing visuals presented
I am glad they upped Splinter's paternal role in this movie, in most iterations they lean far more into the fact that he is the turtles' sensei than father.
The best thing about TMNT is each remake/reimagining feels like its own thing w/o trying to coast off of the successes of what came before it. Like Spiderverse, this feels like a wider multiverse we can love as a whole & in pieces. I LOVE IT!!!!
I watched this with my friend, her two brothers my brother and her dad. My brother and my friends youngest brother are in elementary school, my friends middle brother is in middle school, and my friend and I are in high school. Everyone in our party LOVED this movie. We stated up till midnight talking about how much we loved it.
I know the turtle x April thing had been pretty over done, but to be fair, MM’s Aprilnardo is probably the healthiest one by far. I mean, Leo isn’t obsessed with her or coming off as a creep like Donnie or Mikey, and he certainly respected her opinions on not being on camera. Sure it was love at first sight, but at least their dynamic was cute. Also, I think they experimented with different shapes on characters not just to break the cute face trope, but to show that people come in all shapes and sizes. Something I noticed is that April’s face was the only one who’s face wasn’t weirdly shaped.
You know, it's still crazy to me that in the near 40 years of its a existence this franchise is almost up there with Batman and Spider-Man in terms of popularity. 5 tv shows with another on the way, 10 movies with a lot more on the way, multiple comic continuities, and several video games and it's called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". And it started out as a Daredevil Parody. Eastman and Laird really struck gold with these 4.
I mean, the turtles were into April in 89 as well. Mikey constantly wanted to flirt with her, and then they made fun of Ralph for "blushing" when she mentioned him by name. But the introduction of Casey Jones kinda sidestepped the strange turtle crushes. It doesnt really exist in TMNT 2 except for maybe Mikey still flirting with her..but yeah. Aside from the 90s cartoon which made April out to really be the adult in the group, I get why most versions include a crush. She isn't just the main female character, most of the time she is the first human they really interact with...it honestly makes sense for one of the "teens" to have a crush.
I feel like this movie was just a lot of the best parts of all versions of tmnt. Rise, 2012, the comics ect. And sprinkled in a lot of good stuff thats unique to them and i love it!
I love this iteration of the turtles so much, Im so excited to see more of them. I was really happy to see them be actual kids, and the gen z slang was very organic. Sure, I rolled my eyes quite a few times but the same thing happens when im around my friends who are also 15 year old boys. As a teen myself who for all I know could be only a few months older than the Mutant Mayhem turtles, they hit it out of the park!
The turtles in this film are adorable and I like how relatable they are as just being kids. I also like how rise is the only one out of the entire franchise that doesn’t try or even force a romantic interest with April and any of the other turtles. I love how they just keep her as a best friend/sister. Love your movie reviews and I would love to see what other movie reviews you do!
Lol. Fake fan alert. April is never a romantic interest. Sometimes she has a romance with Casey Jones, but that's always secondary. April is meant to be a useful human ally to the turtles. She should be an adult Reporter or Scientist. Not a fellow kid/teen. Not a fellow fighter. Not a social outcast. And TMNT is not a comedy. SMH.
@@TheRibottoStudiosseriously. There is this impetus by moronic creators to make April more like the Turtles. I think it's out of some need to make April more of a main character by making her a peer rather than an adult with her own life and responsibilities. Ironically, it makes April useless as a character, and truly reduces her to merely "the girl" of the franchise. Teen April is literally only there to be the girl vs adult April who is a very important and competent ally to the turtles.
This movie really reminded me of one of those like... 80's - 90's "Kids" movies where like... The storyline is kid-oriented, but it has some pieces in there I'm genuinely surprised made it through the filters. Every frame of animation feels like it was painted over with authentic New York City Subway grime, some of the violence is actually pretty brutal, and Superfly has some choice vocabulary and I love it. Perhaps my opinion might change if I ever become a parent, but I like the idea of children's media not always just presenting a wide-eyed beautiful, colorful, sanitized world to its audience. Life is a messy affair and I think it's important for media to be allowed to broaden and challenge one's views of the world.
Tbh, the humor in this movie reminded me a lot of turning red in a way. The cringe humor they had over there passed onto the movie here. Maybe it's just me but for some reason it fits its considering the fact that this is a franchise that includes TEENAGE turtle boys. The movies is VERY aware of the fact that they're still growing. These moments feel like something one of them would bring up a couple of years later and they'd reply "We do NOT talk about that." Or something along those lines. I adore that to an unholy amount Also side note, I love how funky their toddler designs looked 😭
Despite some rough edges here or there, Ninja Turtles has been a franchise that has continuously surprised us with how solid their reboots can be over the years in terms of television. Can't wait to see this, and I'm still hoping RotTMNT gets the new season it deserved.
Really like how the TMNT are having a come back. I really really hope that you will do a video about ROTTMNT as its also soo good in its animation, characters, and family dynamics. I'm praying for another season since that series has been done dirty.
I loved the art style. It felt like a sketchbook come to life. It took me back to drawing turtles as a 80s/90s kid ALL DAY LONG! I was hesitant towards the fly character going into the movie. But the character was great. His role in the movie was perfect. This was a fantastic starting point for the series. I’m especially excited to see how the heel characters become bad.
I abso fucking lutely loved this movie. As an artist, I have hella respect for the style they went with on this movie. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing (imo), but it’s also, like you said, a breath of fresh air for animation. Since spiderverse, I have LOVED seeing animation studio’s diversifying styles. I love the sketchy and VERY asymmetrical look, it just makes it more fun to look at for me. Also, the voice actors?! The cast was AMAZING. Dare I says one of the best castings for the TMNT franchise. I saw an interview that said the boys did a lot of improv and were in the same room while recording, which I think every animated movie should do tbh. It really makes it seem more real. The soundtrack was really good, too. The Leo x April thing going on there isn’t my favorite since, you know, if it were to happen that April “liked him back”, A turtle and human being together is just weird to me…. But! Leo got friendzoned so I guess it’s okay lmao😭😂. Like someone else said in the comments, it actually wasn’t too bad compared to how other media display April x turtle romance. I love 2012 TMNT, I grew up watching it- but lord is Donny a creep. (It was also executed rlly poorly). The bay movie w Mikey x April is even worse to me, though. I just can’t imagine Mikey being like that. I thought they also did April pretty well in this movie! I like her design a lot, and the design/aspect nods to the earlier Aprils. The only thing that kinda gave me an ick during the movie was some of the jokes. The rizz jokes were kinda overused. But when I remember all these teenage boys recorded this in a room together, it kinda makes it better. Like, they really said that sht and thought it was funny😂😂. That drives home the teenager feel the directors were going for though, so I guess it’s alright. The only thing I really hated was that kissing scene w the roach and splinter! Lord. That was… something, to say the least. Overall, though, I really enjoyed the movie and it’s definitely going on my “favorite movies” list. I can’t wait for the upcoming series & sequel!
I LOVED THIS MOVIE! The animation was stunning, I really like the 3d comic book style like Spiderverse, the soundtrack was just my style, and I just love the chemistry between the characters! I grew up watching TMNT, and I was so excited to see this movie and it did not disappoint!
I liked the Rise of the TMNT movie more. I will never not love the Rise turtles, and still hope we get a third season since different TMNT iterations have co-existed before.
Regarding the art style, it is highly, highly stylized and artistic (for lack of a better word). This works for people who are creatively minded. The problem with that is the regular movie goer doesn't appreciate this. They want something standard and mainstream looking, so they may be turned off by it, as you say.
I genuinely got flashbacks to my school of how the turtles talked and acted. I loved how good they managed to portrait them as actually teenagers. Like, the boys at my school and my little brother act and talk just like them.
It’s such a breath of fresh air when characters’ designs aren’t perfect! I love imperfections in character designs because it makes them feel more natural.
Pretty much my same thoughts. My only issues are how Giancarlo Esposito was wasted as Baxter Stockman and the complete removal of Hamato Yoshi from the origin, especially considering the tease in the mid-credits.
Honestly. I love splinter as a wise sense. But it makes so much more sense for him to be a tired single dad of 4 teenage boys who just needs a long spa trip
Really don't like what they did with April, but love the turtles and the rest of the film, is still behind the ROTTMNT movie for me because the animation in that thing is like they sold their souls to the devil for it. But this one's characters are fantastic.
Saw this movie in theaters yesterday and (while it had it's rough spots for sure) came out of it pleasantly surprised!!! Hope more people discover this film soon, it's a fun time!
What I got from this is that Ice Cube should do more VA work He can definitely do a lot work with just his voice and pull off range to an extent like Cena
all of the slang and anime references made me so happy because i understood something about the tmnt movie that my parents didnt (ive never really been into TMNT but they were when they were kids)
The artstyle/animation of this movie alone made me go see it. And it's just a treat to watch visually. I really do hope that this is the new approach to CGI movies going forward; using 2D effects to create their own stylized choice.
We wouldn't have this problem of April being shipped with a different turtle every reboot if Nick/Paramount bothered to remember that Mona Lisa exists. How dare they forget a girl-turned-salamander-mutant named after a famous Italian Renaissance woman and practically hand-crafted to be shipped with the turtles, even if her only appearance was in a single episode of the original 1987 series. Who do these Philistines think they are, smh.
Mona Lisa was actually brought into the 2012 TMNT series, but they changed her from a mutant to an Alien that Raph nick named Mona Lisa because she was the most beautiful thing in his eyes.
9:46 The Turtles have been crushing on April off and on since the 87 series. Specifically the episode "April Fool" back in 89. Remember that these guy are hormonal teenagers, and April often the first female they meet.
I actually don’t mind some iterations of April being romantically involved with the turtles but ONLY if done right. 2012? Creepy and bad lesson to teach imo…Michael Bay’s? Crushing is fine, but if it isn’t plot relevant or character evolving then idc… Mutant Mayhem? ACTUALLY CUTE. Leo is shown as the turtle to kind of want a romantic relationship early in the movie and April spurs him into starting their crime-fighting when he has always been the rules-are-everything guy. Sure it is a crush, but what comes from it is character evolution, as at the end, he realizes that he is doing things for the wrong reason. Out of all the turtles in the film , I actually feel like Leo’s character liking a girl while trying to be the mature, no nonsense big brother, brings out the awkward cute kid out of him! 😂
This movie DEFINITELY makes you believe you’re watching four teenagers! (One of the main reasons could be because they’re voiced by four teenagers…😅) The only other TMNT series I can think of that made me believe I’m watching young teens is Rise of the TMNT. (Probably the 2012 series too, but not as much…)
They feel like 13-15 year olds which is perfect. But the BEST part of this movie! Is how Superfly mirrors how adults can very easily gaslight and manipulate children. He shows up all friendly calling himself cousin ect. I have seen this happen too often in real life. Especially when he starts threatening the turtles. He gaslights them by saying "you are not as cool as I thought." Which will hit hard to children who really want a place to belong. They are scared of Superfly and rightfully so. But the cherry is when they are trying to escape. It is extremely hard for children to leave a a dangerous and toxic environment and they executed this perfectly. Just (chef's kiss😚👌)
I know we're ragging on how people throw April as a love interest for the turtle teens. and I agree completely on how bad it's done, and think of how overused this trope of 'monster' falling in love with a human so they could 'join' the human world... but also. as someone who is super into monsters. I would *love* a version of April who has a sudden realisation of "oh shit, I... think I'm into [one or more of the teenage turtles]?!" because come on, we *need* some monster lover representation and how it's fine to get out of your comfort zone and fall in love with someone your "perfect society" doesn't think is worth their time. I am *so* waiting for any TMNT writer to capitalise on that. I think "teenager falling in love with a turtle (instead of the other way around)" is something that a lot of the fandom would get. and also a better way to handle that crush compared to ~many other media~
This iteration easily has the best April. I think out of every single one, this one not only felt real, relatable, down-to-earth, and feels like an actual human. But, she actually had an arc. It wasn't deep or serious, it was simple and that worked really well. As a 2012 fan, I love this iteration, definitely better, and I loved the ending. But, I have one question with the film. And, it is a spoiler. How are they gonna explain Shredder?
****SPOILERS**** Yeah, I'm wondering how they address Shredder too. Maybe they just rearrange his backstory, as they've already done with several characters for this iteration, making this version one we'll have to accept on his own terms. Might make Shredder feel less personal, but I'd be willing to let them cook. Alternately, another far easier answer could just be that Splinter was lying about his origins, feeling he didn't need to give the turtles his full tragic backstory full of baggage since surely his troubled past is long behind him and definitely won't come back to haunt him, right?
I don't like how it's animated, because it's hard to follow but I love the story. This is the first ever TMNT movie where the turtles are respected as equals. This is pretty awesome to see! Long over due.
I watched the movie, loved it and I really wanna see them expand there's so much potential so much more they could do and I crave for more of this universe Like every movie it had its flaws and not everything could be covered/explained but with what they had I'd say they did pretty dam well Overall definitely a 10/10 movie
Unpopular opinion: It's neck and neck with spider verse. My theater was laughing the whole time. On my way to get a refill on my slurpee I passed a woman and said "this movie is so good" and she said "I know". I was hollering when SupahFly said he wanted to exploit humans similar into which humans exploit animals. It was a tired allegory on bigotry and I'm glad he was condemned, but it was funny.
It’s really cool what they did with this new version of the turtles, They actually made the humans accept the turtles for once. (Unless you count the 80’s one)
Hopefully, now, with the success of this movie, people will stop immediately thinking that anything being worked on by Seth Rogen will immediately be bad. He's made a lot of great media for entertainment.
honestly in my opinion the gag they are gonna get milked if they go out, AND THEN THEY ACTUALLY GET MILKED. Was absolutely hilarious to me. And im sure the sequel will be just as great as the movie, idk if they will go with the same animation style especially if its a series (because animation is hard af).
Do I watch every TMNT videos just to hear that inevitable 1 second mention of Rise in a good connotation cuz it's a naturally good show? ... Yes. Great vid, the animation style and character style was quite frankly, peak
I had fun with the movie, I knew about Leo's crush on April before going in because that information was released to the public before the movie came out so I had low expectations on that front because of how that was handled with Donnie in the 2012 series but I was pleasantly surprised like it helped sway his actions so there was a point to it but it didn't eat up his entire character. Actually, Leo is a difficult turtle to get down in just the span of one movie, his character usually ends up getting better over time like for example with 03 Leo, me personally, I didn't care for him until after he had his training with the Ancient One in season 4. I started liking him more as the series went on but after he went through that Batman faze like seriously, that voice he was doing during that time had me laughing but it made so much sense & I enjoy the growth he got from the whole thing. Rise Leo also needed to earn his place as a turtle I like, I liked him before but it flip flopped between him & Mikey on who I liked more but it wasn't until the Rise movie where I'm like yes, I like Leo more. So I didn't think just one movie could make a good Leo, they did it. I had the lowest expectations for him but they pulled it off! I absolutely adore all four of the turtles in this & while I have my favorites in most iterations, I can't pick a favorite for MM, all of the turtles are great & they did a good Leo! I am so happy they pulled off his character well here.
I admit one thing I did think was refreshing about Leo's crush, is how I don't think I've seen a character crush on a heavy set black girl before...ever, in media in a way that's portrayed as totally normal. It's something I've known but untill seeing it I never truly realised how absent it's been.
I am so going to have fun watching this film this weekend. Given how they went with Splinter being a rat but didn’t make him Hamato Yoshi’s pet, I could totally imagine Hamato being brought in for the sequel. Maybe as like a neighbor for the turtles and Splinter
The Rise film beats it out personally for me as I connected emotionally with that one a lot more but man Mutant Mayhem was a fun and satisfying ride and I think they have the potential to make something really groundbreaking with the sequel if they go for a more impactful and less formulaic story
I have a little label for the odd, April and Turtle romance thing: April fools. We know that c-plot ain't going anywhere, and we're just kidding ourselves by even considering it could.
I was a bit sketchy on it at first, but overall I really like what they are doing with the turtle franchise. I grew up with the 2012 version, but if I’m being honest I think the franchise is really taking off. It’s doing better than Scooby Doo anyway
Just watched the movie. I think the thing that makes it all blend together so well is the common theme of messy but awesome. The hiphop music, the imperfect artstyle, teenagers, the idea of mutants in general. It all ties together into one big mega-vibe that hits you like a truck and it's amazing.
The turtles aren't just teenagers they're tweens 11- 14 aka middle schoolers. The most annoying and most awkward type of teenager. I like my ninja turtles to be high schoolers/collage freshman so I don't have to deal with the annoyances of middle schoolers or their awkward nature.
This description of this movie does sound nice. My main thing has always been the character development and theme of the characters: are they still within the lines of what that character is and how do they develop said characters. I originally wasnt a fan of emphasising the teenage aspect of tmnt as my favourite version was 2012 more ninja than teen. Rise was the first to convince me it was a good direction as nick'version felt more like a fanfic of older stories, and rise while corny grew into it self though to be fair it took a while for the plot to get good. I hope this version is also good.
10:35 it almost feels like this started in the 1990 between Raph and April. It never developed into even a crush but I recall the rest of the brothers teasing raph over it when April thanked the turtles and raph especially for saving her when the Foot tried to beat or abduct her.
the blatant disrespect of Rise of the TMNT in this video, not even mentioning it at all. especially when April was a sister to them in that version, and she is best April. : /
As weird as it one of the turtles crushing on April makes sense. Think about they spent 14 or 15 years in a sewer with just each other. And there teenagers with hormones if I were Leo I'd thirst for the first actual girl I saw too.
(14th august) Today I finally watched it and it was so fun, Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey were charming in how immature they were, and kind of reminded me of parts of myself when I was 15. The use of music was so great, especially for action scenes, like the fight to find the lead to superfly.
I loved the style of the film because in a way it reminded me of ParaNorman in the best way possible with the grunginess. Just that rough aesthetic to make things creepier and also have the people look as rough as the mutants in that world
For those wondering about April’s race I’ll just leave these quotes by the original authors “ (April was) originally created as an Asian character in Pete’s notes, but named after an African American woman I once knew.” -Kevin Eastman “It depends on which co-creator of the TMNT you ask. If you ask me, I always saw April O’Neil as white. If you ask Kevin, I suspect he would say - as he has in a number of interviews - that she was of mixed race, much like his former girlfriend (then wife, then ex-wife) April.” -Peter Laird
10:32 when he explains the April being shipped with the turtles then points out how rise is the only one that dosent really explains why rise is my favorite adaptation- ((April is a badass in the show btw you should watch it)) I watched the MM movie and it’s great btw-
I get the April crush being annoying, but at the same time if you're a giant mutant turtle who has been shunned and closed off from the human world for 15 years and you finally saw an actual girl who was decently pretty, you wouldn't have a little crush on her? Cause there weren't any mutant turtle females that were their age or even look cute like them, so beggers can't be choosers, yk?

GREAT TMNT MUTANTS MAYHEM MOVIE REVIEW 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 SARCASTIC CHORUS.
Thank you for making another review!
yeah guys let's all donate our hard earned money to the millionaire writers. I'm game!
Why do all the humans have gross squished faces? Also Leo falling for April is the same as Donny falling for April in that as you say “just happens”
Don't donate they don't deserve it
I love how the art style manages to look kind of gritty and dirty like the OG comics but keeps the vibrance of the cartoons and is still 100% its own thing
Yes i love the dirty city atmosphere and how they implemented that same art style thru out the movie. I give it a 9/10
I concur.

Almost looks like stop motion.
Depends on the genre and the script if its same generic setup then yeah thats a problem but 2d animation never dies
@@trika91I remember "paperman" still gorgeous to look at, too bad they didn't try it more
Yeah it seems like animation is going into a 2.5D area and I love it
and now all other studios will copy the style and in a few years it'll be generic once more and the cycle continues.
Donnie sounds like he has the voice of a prepubescent child, so he's probably not even into girls yet.
Idk about the 2012 but the Bay movies weren't that creepy. I think Mikey was more so joking about her being his gf and it makes sense for a teen (specially Mikey) to flaunt himself in front of his more serious brothers.
I absolutely loved the sketchy art style. I hope to see more animated movies use unique styles
agreed. It's almost like Spiderverse, but different enough to where you associate it with JUST this movie and not JUST Spiderverse.
It's definitely more Doodle sketchbook looking than the comic style Spiderverse had
Agreed I absolutely love the animation and soundtrack.
@@thehonoredone2361yeah especially how ugly the humans looked outside of April.
Yes, I saw it in 3D - and it made me think of "Swapnote".
The turtles learning everything from movies feels like a reflection on a generation that learns how to do everything from TH-cam.
Yup, very disappointing
and it makes sense with how many tutorials both good AND BAD are out there.

EXCELLENT.
I know this might sound weird, but i loved how UGLY the characters in this movie look. So much animation feels overly polished and sanitized and pretty, it's pretty refreshing to see something like this around
the faces were pretty ugly, but there was some charm to it, and i love the scenes where there was subtle stop motion being used
Blasphemy!!! The sleek character design of the ninjas looked amazing and their faces captured their emotions perfectly

It’s funny that the humans call the mutants the freaks when they’re not that far off from looking like ones either
baxter stockman was terrifying tho genuinely glad he didn't have much screen time he was uncanny.
Yes. It has to keep renewing itself, just like Scooby-Doo.
@@sycofya1677 True.
Sorry but I too grew up watching tmnt as a kid, and Im disgusted at the political BS in this movie.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the originals.
@@onetwo6039 Could elaborate on what you had a problem with specifically, instead of “political bs”.
Dont forget that Splinter said at the start that he was a adult rat, so when he mutated he was an adult mutant, so its safe to assume the cockroach was an adult before she mutated as well
I agree
The TMNT *finally* being played by actual teenagers added more authenticity to the Teenage part of their name! 😃
@InevitableOption-ic2vx Don's voice actor sounds 8 years old
@InevitableOption-ic2vx"i don't know what to tell you" you don't have to tell me anything, it's common sense you don't cast a teenager who sounds like an 8 year old
The thing about the turtles having a crush on April is one of the reasons why Rise is my favorite adaptation of the franchise because April’s relationship with the turtles is a sibling relationship first and foremost, and not to mention how the show just immediately have April and the turtles being friends from the start. Especially since how 2012 shows and the Micheal Bay made it so weird and uncomfortable.
You know that Leo had a crush on April in that movie right?
@@sparta-zh7yk yeah I know, tho I will say that to me it’s not as bad as the 2012 show or the Micheal Bay movies.
@@sparta-zh7ykLeo liked April in the Rise movie?
This might be my one of my favorite iterations of TMNT. Spider-Verse definitely made an impact with its animation style, the animation and story was great . And I was not expecting Seth Rogen to kill it with this movie.
I'm all for this new era of animation. I loved the mixing of 2d and 3d
@@jskywalker58Yeah it's mainly the comics where she's an adult now. IDW, Last Ronin, and the Saturday Morning Comics that are based on the 87 series.
Ditto - part of why I like Rise, to be honest, they do a good job at making her feel like part of the family, and it was so REFRESHING to see a character like her be so full of personality with absolutely none of that personality hinging on romance with her male besties.
@jskywalker58 Yeah I'm very sick of teen April at this point lol
The animators deserve it all for this puppy
Yes the voices and their movements matched so well, they truly grasped each turtles unique personality. Best TMNT ever!!!!
Plus they teamed up with Batman love the turtles 🐢 ❤
@@WSendam Not just Batman. Also the Ghostbusters, Power Rangers, the Street Fighter people, and the Stranger Things Kids.
@@thebeavpercabethftw9604yo that’s awesome 😎 ❤

The style reminds of clay figures, like everyone is an imperfect clay figure come to life and I love it
I honestly liked Leo having a crush on April. Donnie was creepy in 2012 but they made it cute in this movie 💙💛
Was it the best movie ever? No.
Was it groundbreaking or revolutionary in any way? No.
Did I have an absolute blast watching it? You bet I did!
No its not 87 , 2003 , tmnt 2007 also don't make her a love interest
@@ijionclifton9148 in fact April in the 2003 show is an adult and it's the LAST time we've seen her as an adult not a teen. I miss adult April.

And it's finally something for teens. Most movies are either for little kids or adults.
I adore that to an unholy amount
Also side note, I love how funky their toddler designs looked 😭
Despite some rough edges here or there, Ninja Turtles has been a franchise that has continuously surprised us with how solid their reboots can be over the years in terms of television.
Can't wait to see this, and I'm still hoping RotTMNT gets the new season it deserved.
It's one of those franchises that you start having faith in when you watch every iteration cause at some point it just turns out good.
Saying batgirl was passed around the family was wrong, but you’re right 😭☠️
Really like how the TMNT are having a come back.
The kiss scene also disgusted me, I actually felt kinda sick 😂😭 Never been one to like spit and omg the roach really had a lot of it 😨
Agreed
I really love Mutant Mayhem's versions of the characters. This honesty might be my favorite version of Mikey, followed by Rise.
The art is giving box trolls meets spider verse and I’m so here for how squishy and gritty everything is with its hyper stylization. It is beautiful
Yeah, this
Regarding the art style, it is highly, highly stylized and artistic (for lack of a better word).
Title: how mutant mayhem raised the bar
Rise of the tmnt: 👀
What I got from this is that Ice Cube should do more VA work
He can definitely do a lot work with just his voice and pull off range to an extent like Cena
Yup
@@yulee3266 it's odd how he hasn't until now
all of the slang and anime references made me so happy because i understood something about the tmnt movie that my parents didnt (ive never really been into TMNT but they were when they were kids)
Ok tell how 2012 was creepy?
It just a teen have a crush on another teen nothing creepy was dont here
@@sparta-zh7ykit was creepy because donnie kept disrespecting april's boundaries, was super possessive of her, and refused to take no for an answer.
@@jacm4150 sound like an every normal tv show with teenage romance
@@sparta-zh7ykthat ain't normal
@@jacm4150 but it almost in every single show with teenage love interest have this, they just copied the same formula
They Really Took Miles Morales' " Nah Ima Do My OWN Thing" To the Next Level , I'm not Disappointed Either.
Rise April >
Haven't seen the movie yet BUT for now, 03 April is the best one. Gives off total mom/big sister vibes which I like. Is cute.
@@Pokedexsoh yeah man rise April solos fr
@@Pokedexs2003 April way way way better
****SPOILERS****
Yeah, I'm wondering how they address Shredder too.
As a person who sometimes draws milking nsfw, the milking jokes made me laugh harder than usual lmao
"But we don't even have nipples!"
bit creepy
...what
I don't like how it's animated, because it's hard to follow but I love the story. This is the first ever TMNT movie where the turtles are respected as equals. This is pretty awesome to see! Long over due.
I watched the movie, loved it and I really wanna see them expand there's so much potential so much more they could do and I crave for more of this universe
Like every movie it had its flaws and not everything could be covered/explained but with what they had I'd say they did pretty dam well
Overall definitely a 10/10 movie
Agreed!! Just got back from watching it and I think its the best movie ive seen in a long time 🫡
I love the animation style they went for. it feels like Claymation plus a teenager's doodles in school
Agreed
I hope the running gag of SC saying TMNT out of order never stops.
honestly in my opinion the gag they are gonna get milked if they go out, AND THEN THEY ACTUALLY GET MILKED.
For me it’s tmnt 2003 and 2012 are still the best versions of them to be on tv as an tv show gose not as an movie.
I didn't like the animation style at first but when the trailer came out it grew on me immediately and I actully really love the style
I loved their personalities that alone makes it the best TMNT movie
Agreed
Rise deserved love too
I loved how crazy the humans looked.
The turtles aren't just teenagers they're tweens 11- 14 aka middle schoolers. The most annoying and most awkward type of teenager. I like my ninja turtles to be high schoolers/collage freshman so I don't have to deal with the annoyances of middle schoolers or their awkward nature.
They're 15
@@AaronShegrud They act like middle schoolers.
@@AaronShegrud THEY ARE?? I thought they were surely 12/13...
I agree,there's so much 80"s stuff.where's 2000's based media or something else
10:35 it almost feels like this started in the 1990 between Raph and April. It never developed into even a crush but I recall the rest of the brothers teasing raph over it when April thanked the turtles and raph especially for saving her when the Foot tried to beat or abduct her.
the blatant disrespect of Rise of the TMNT in this video, not even mentioning it at all.
especially when April was a sister to them in that version, and she is best April. : /
Yeah. Rise April is the best April 🎉😊
I was really happy to hear that Ice Cube was going to be in this, his voice for Super fly was perfect in my opinion
Sarcastic Chorus's content is amazing! It's as amazing as the new TMNT Movie that came out!🤩👍
I loved the style of the film because in a way it reminded me of ParaNorman in the best way possible with the grunginess. Just that rough aesthetic to make things creepier and also have the people look as rough as the mutants in that world
anyone remember when april was a reporter...
For those wondering about April’s race I’ll just leave these quotes by the original authors
“ (April was) originally created as an Asian character in Pete’s notes, but named after an African American woman I once knew.” -Kevin Eastman
“It depends on which co-creator of the TMNT you ask. If you ask me, I always saw April O’Neil as white. If you ask Kevin, I suspect he would say - as he has in a number of interviews - that she was of mixed race, much like his former girlfriend (then wife, then ex-wife) April.” -Peter Laird
Her design in the first cartoon was inspired by a Lupin the Third character(Fujiko Mine).
10:32 when he explains the April being shipped with the turtles then points out how rise is the only one that dosent really explains why rise is my favorite adaptation- ((April is a badass in the show btw you should watch it))
I watched the MM movie and it’s great btw-
I get the April crush being annoying, but at the same time if you're a giant mutant turtle who has been shunned and closed off from the human world for 15 years and you finally saw an actual girl who was decently pretty, you wouldn't have a little crush on her? Cause there weren't any mutant turtle females that were their age or even look cute like them, so beggers can't be choosers, yk?
Proof that the Turtles don't need Shredder, Krang, or to be overly edgy to have a great movie.
It was kinda dark in spots and Cynthia was technically Kraang in disguise
I looked at this and thought it was ugly, but MAN! I LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE! I just think these designs are bad.
I hope this franchise continues for long and we get an adaptation of the last ronin with them
🤮🤮🤮

A last Ronin storyline would be heartbreaking and I'm all here for it
