@@heybuwanHey! I have a question regarding media consumption. Is it okay to enjoy problematic media while recognizing and acknowledging its faults? For me, whenever I watch an old movie and notice a problematic aspect, I mentally cringe but move on with watching the film.
Something I like about the movie that Seth does in other movies is the fact he has all the voice actors act in the exact same room so all their energy plays off each other, giving it a much more natural feel to everyone talking
I don’t like people speaking over other people’s lines, so that method doesn’t work for me. Maybe if people are ad-libbing lines, but that can still be done without overlapping talking.
Also I think the only reason they immediately got a sequel movie and a show is because Nickelodeon is trying the “greenlight ANYTHING” thing Netflix is doing, so HOPEFULLY their not going to take it down early like Rise, but I’m not hopeful. Also #Saverotmnt
Wait seriously??? “Greenlight everything”? Are they HIGH?? Isn’t Netflix dying cuz of that strategy? They’re not going to follow up on a show that ppl demand more of (Rise), but are jumping straight into extra content here just because that worked out so well the first time??? Wow
#saveriseofthetmnt #Saverottmnt #SaveROTTMNT #SaveRiseoftheTMNT #UnpauseROTTMNT #UnpauseRiseoftheTMNT #RiseSeason3 #TMNT Spam those hashtags! Anywhere! Everywhere! Don't give up the fight! It's the only surefire way for Rise to fall.
I wish Splinter was Hamato Yoshi’s pet rat simply because it would make the already established similarities he has with Superfly even stronger, as what Yoshi is to Splinter could parallel what Baxter is to Superfly!
I think they might have made splinter the pet. But haven’t said it because they waiting for the show or when they meet splinter or something. Because I feel like the distinctiveness of splinter for the other normal rats is definitely an important note
In the case of Leo's crush on April, I actually didn't mind it here. It wasn't creepy or off-putting to me. Leo was just a skrunkly lil cringe boy and he made me laugh. Also Donnie and Raph were definite highlights for me ❤️💜
Honestly, I'm glad the Leo crush was just a very small thing in the movie. But man I'm 100% sure is going to be something important for the show and honestly that a BIG no for me...
It doesnt make sense when she's so ugly. I refuse to watch this movie but the fact a bunch of racists are allowed to do a fat body race swap and then forece the main characters to love her is disgusting.
What I love more about his crush was the fact that it was treated as a puppy crush, like april confirm she only see him as a friends, which omg after the 2012 it feel so much better to get confirmation on the dating status
I just started the video and I'm going to say that ROTTMNT was not canceled because of MM, they are actually considering starting up rise again but they will wait for MM to be over before doing that. So don't blame MM for rise being paused, it was bad toys sales that stopped the show. not hating I just wanted to clear this up.
@@B.K.J im actually curious, why do you call it an abomination? i personally love the show but i see people disliking it and i wanna hear their side of the story
also, where did you hear this? if they’re considering starting it back up thats so cool! but like…why couldn’t they just run them side by side? MM seems kind of “gen alpha” while Rise caters to more of a “gen z” and running them side by side would be a nice way to bridge the gap we’re in where gen alpha is growing up but gen z are still pretty young oops im rambling sorry
I actually don’t think that the Leo/April thing is going to be that big of a deal. In the end Leo asks April to prom or whatever, but she says, “wait, this is just as friends, right?” Soooo hopefully that means this is going nowhere near the whole 2012 Donnie and April thing lol
@@SpideyfanX She kissed him platonically once and he became very shy. It's like a small teenage crush, not anywhere near the scale of 2012 Don's crush on April
@@GhostToasters93 Let's be real, it's because the creators think Rise went too hard on the queer coding and they're backtracking. Leo of all people having a crush on April definitely felt to me like a desperate, "See? See? He has a crush on a girl, he's totally not gay" kind of move.
Another problem with all the big names is that Nick's not going to be able to get them all back for a tv series. Superfly is dead so they don't have to worry about him but all the other mutants they introduced will now be expected to show up and will cost to much for a tv budget or will be recast or just magically not be around for most of the show. So not only was the big names not needed in this movie. It also locks those characters from getting the screen time they would usually get from the tv show to build up their personalities.
@@Dilopho well yeah I guess they could try to remutate him. But they'd still run into the problem of not being able to afford the guy if they brought him back in the series. If he does return it might be saved for the second movie if they decide to do that.
@@ridethecatclone i know which is why I said the va's being big names was a problem. But they could always do a theatrical sequel in the future as well.
The best part of this movie was definitely the boys, their energy and childishness (and I mean that positively, they're kids). I really liked their personalities, Donnie is always peak, I liked Raph being angry but not at his brothers just in a temperamental way. I knew Leo wouldn't be Rise Leo but it still made me sad. I do relate to his personality being Anxiety tho. Splinter wasn't my favorite, like the parallels they went for were cool but yeah, it didn't really feel like they pulled it off.
@@Tepaneca stop being rude. i don't think it's that odd to say you liked the turtles the most, as it's not impossible for them to be uninteresting in an iteration.
i didn't really mind Leo's crush because it felt more like a teenager has a crush for no reason because hormones and acts incredibly awkward because of it situation since it's very one sided
i thought the same thing. it’s one-sided but not toxic or incel-ish. leo just has a crush :) i was scared cause i’ve been traumatized by the romance from the 2012 series but i thought it was done well
As a crusty 30 year old, I'll never get the hate for this movie. They were fun as hell and adorable, and on top of that the characters were all stylized like an old rugrats show. On top of that, they weren't nerfed because of their kind of goofy "they learned through tv"
As a fellow crusty 30 something...same! Like it feels like people are just trying to dislike it. The only valid criticism I really felt was in this video was the Jackie Chan/Splinter segment about how disjointed Splinters characterization is. But the stuff about like all the a-list voice actors...it was more a critique of the marketing, nothing was really said about whether the actors negatively impacted the actual story/performance. So its not like the movie sacrificed good performance JUST for the sake of name dropping. No of course there wouldn't be enough screen time for everyone. But take away their expectation that big name=screen time and the amount of time those characters were on screen to contribute to the Superfly story was perfect. They needed to be individual mutants with their own qualms about humans rather than henchmen #1-12 to be able to choose to defy Superfly. And they got just enough screen time to develop that without taking the spotlight. And then the video complains "the story focused on all the boys as a whole instead of one brother..." only to turn around and say it was too Leo focused......make up your mind! This was an excellent TMNT movie that felt fresh, looked amazing, and was executed beautifully.
I'm not a crusty 30 yr old but one thing didn't like was the 50 million pop culture references and all the modern references too. Just felt like it was too much. Other than that, pretty great movie. Really had fun with it.
I watched it this weekend and really liked it, I’m in my 30s and have seen most of the tmnt movies shows and read some of the original comics. I loved this version, really made me smile. The characters of the 4 turtles themselves weren’t that fleshed out IMO. A consequence of having so many different characters I think. And changing the origin story removing all Japanese content from it was interesting considering they introduce shredder in a post credits scene. I don’t mind that decision but does it take away any of the emotional weight with no oroku saki vs hamato Yoshi backstory? I always enjoyed that the turtles had this Japanese ninjitsu background and that is changed in this version. But really I am picking nits and overall loved this movie.
Ok but how about that ending??? Are we just gonna get the turtles… like in highschool??? Right out the gate??? I’m still trippin over even imagining that lmao
My theory for Splinter’s backstory is that maybe he was Hamato Yoshi but through some Shredder, science alien babble bullshit, turned him into a city rat and lost his memories of his original self. That might be reaching but hey, its TMNT, stupider shit has happened before.
That would be an interesting twist. And your right, stupid thing does happen, I once went to a library saw the comic section and grabbed the turtle comics that says classic in title. Two things that got me confused was one story that follows a little kid that circled back to the beginning, and the next story the turtles’ souls were transferred into appliances and mashed up products or mannequins…. Mr. Eastman, Mr. Laird, how satirical you guy’s going?
i agree heavy with the master splinter thing. like i don’t like how he’s just a rat basically learning how to fight from a t.v. & without actual knowledge from his past when he was supposed to be human
Splinter back story: crazy scientist working in Chinese military camp trying to create mutated super soldiers and Splinter is the test rat that was trained in martial arts but then cast away and decides to train teen mutant turtles into ninjas.
Maybe splinter was formerly hamato yoshi’s pet rat. Maybe Yoshi went to New York when splinter was young and after the shredder offed Yoshi for whatever reason splinter was forced to up in New York, eventually becoming unaware of his origin so that’s why he never brought it up to the turtles, he just doesn’t remember it!
i actually LOVE the trope of an established backstory being undermined in a follow-up. i hope they do this to expand on splinter while they introduce shredder
i actually like mutant mayhem a lot but if i had to choose between rise or mutant mayhem, i would 100% take rise anytime. i love rise so very much. i still have hope that maybe it will come back I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE IT JUST STOPPING #saverottmnt
I actually liked this Splinter. Jackie Chan was a great choice for a martial artist that has moves he picked up from martial arts cinema but doesn't have actual fighting experience, especially what has to be Chan's input when we see both Splinter and the Turtles fight for the first time and both times it becomes chaos that they barely scrape through, not because they're super ninja but because it has turned into a mess for both sides. I also love that they've basically managed to make a movie out of easter eggs.
In the case of the acting mentioned around 8:30, I think a large reason this was done was for the actors playing the turtles, they’re not big names and they haven’t been in the industry that long and not to mention they’re all really young, so I think that a large reason why compared to them there are so many big names is to boost their careers. Let’s use the example is Nicolas Cantu auditioned for a much bigger role than this, the casting crew would look on his record (Or whatever you would call it) see that he once played a main role in a movie where he also happened to be working with a lot of big name actors like Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, John Cena etc. and that would immediately make the crew think ‘This guy knows what he’s doing’ (This goes for all four of them of course, I was just using Cantu as an example) This isn’t the first time something like this has been done in a movie, and it’s actually a pretty smart form of marketing and helping younger actors take their place in the industry
If this is true, then the crew is doing the best for the teen actors. That would be really great since talented people are hidden anywhere and do this helps them alot! (I think all of them doing a fantastic job, and wish them the best )
I read Splinter's origin as more of a jab at the Bay movies as opposed to being intended to be taken seriously. I can see the issues with it, but I enjoyed what I kinda saw as a "fuck you" to Bay's version of Splinter since the backstory was played as comedic and absurd.
Bay was faithful to the original origin story. Seth's version is a kick in the nuts to any fan of any version of TMNT. Imagine taking your kids to see a movie about Ninjas and you get a move about TikTok teenagers, and you need to re-explain the storylines a bunch of times and clear up their confusion constantly between the stuff they already watched and this new stuff... There were a million ways they could have made this aits own unique Turtles story without destroying the identity of the franchise.
@@Kannabi420 to which original origin story. Not to the Hamato Yoshi himself or his pet rat living in the NYC sewers and training the Turtles. That's the original origin story and its variant.
@@Kannabi420 Jones the Moblin is correct. A standard nut shot at Bay would be a good explainable notion as to why Seth went with this idea. And it would calm hardcore old school fans a bit too. Maybe.
I enjoyed the movie a lot, but some things that I couldn't quite word held me back from really LOVING it. You put most of those things into words in this video, so thanks ^^ Thinking about it now, my biggest issue is probably the thing you touched on regarding how the story seems unwilling to commit to its more intense emotional moments. It comes close but ultimately falls flat. I'm not sure if the writers or the studio are to blame for that, but either way... Idk maybe I handicapped my own enjoyment by comparing it to the Rise movie so much, since arguably one of the BEST things about that movie is its willingness to go all out with its more intense scenes (the prologue, Raph v. Leo, Casey's decision and Leo's sacrifice, etc) MM is still a good movie tho, I'm excited to see what the future holds for this iteration of the turtles
Shame they couldn't get April's skin tone right. Shame they killed the Turtles personalities so theyre all exactly the same as the old Michaelangelo now. But yeah, great movie for kids who dont understand anything yet.
I can't understand how Rise of the TMNT wasn't nostalgic tho. I absolutely feel in love with the story, the new April, and the ART! It should be brought back 🤧 anyways, this movie was cute but I agree with the rat thing you were talking about.
I have a theory : Mutant Mayhem Splinter IS Hamato Yoshi, the thing is that he lied about being a rat because he knew that the turtles were being discriminated by the humans and he felt bad about him being one, so he hided his identity, idk, it makes sense to me in my head, idc if he is or not, i still love the movie
BUWAN!!! :D GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK 💗 I haven't seen the turtle movie yet but I feel the same about the art style! At first, it didn't really vibe with me but after seeing the trailer and watching everyone move, it grew on me! It's very clay, Play Dough like and somehow, it makes the Turtles look more kiddy which matches what the plot is trying to do and how the voice actors and writers are portraying them! Ultimately, I think it was a really good move.
i totally agree with your point on how slang is usually outdated in movies. i live in france and watched the movie in french at the cinema, and the french dubbing really does a bad job on that. this is why i really really want to see it again in english lol
Yep, the biggest disappointment of this movie was definitely Splinter and his background. I'm looking forward to his personality, and how it changes the father-son dynamic, but like, VHS ninjutsu is not gonna cut it for the turtles.
I agree for the most part but judging a movie now is so much more about politics now than actually judging the narrative anymore which just makes me sad. :(
really good review! this movie got me to rottmnt, and I'm so glad that it did!! I love how creative the franchise and the community gets with every iteration, and I can't wait to see where they take it. I fairly enjoyed watching it with a drink in hand. Just a very chill fun vibe for a summer movie. You make some really great points and despite the oofs with splinter and april, it still felt like an enjoyable cohesive, coming of age hero's journey narrative for the 4 teens, which I haven't seen used very often nowadays with movies getting more and more complex to serve a bigger narrative.
Glad you brought up the 87 Nostalgia stuff. My biggest problem with TMNT since Viacom bought it, is that it's clearly doing a lot of Nostalgia bait for 87 fans, and 87 fans only. ROTTMNT is the exception. As someone who grew up on 03, I always jokingly say that I'm old enough to be mined for Nostalgia and Nick should realize that. But at the same time, it really does showcase how Nickelodeon tends to want to satiate older TMNT fans who remember the 87 series, more than it wants to try and actually create its own unique version of TMNT, as well as ignore anything that doesn't cater to it. Which is probably one of the biggest reasons Rise got cancelled, and they want to go forward with Mutant Mayhem. The 87 Nostalgia was also my biggest problem with 2012 and how it stopped it from being more unique and expanding on many of the new characters they created. Instead wanting to continually fallback on the characters of 87. IDK, I'm just tired of a franchise that is most of the time meant for kids continually feeling the need to cater to 40+ year old men who never got over their Saturday morning cartoons. And when they do, it's never in a way that is transformative and instead is very "Hey look, a thing you remember".
The casting of Jackie Chan as Splinter was such a hard pill to swallow because I really liked him otherwise. As you said in your video on Splinter, newer versions have been putting in more effort to break Splinter out of the "stern ninja master" stereotype, and this movie leaning more into the dad aspect of his character was a welcome touch for me. I was worried they'd go with the King Triton route and have him be violently destructive when it comes to the Turtles' desire to be a part of the human world, but it's a more relatively realistic take. Splinter was subjected to hatred because of how different he looked, something that he's still traumatized by, but the boys were too young to fully remember or grasp, and he doesn't want them to go through that same trauma as teenagers. It's very reminiscent of how parents of color fear for how the world will treat their children once they go out on their own, emphasized further by the fact that two of the turtles are voiced by POCs, and as a black man that resonated with me. Even though Splinter was ultimately holding his sons back and needed to let go, this portrayal made me more willing to at least see where he was coming from as opposed to a character like, again, King Triton. When Splinter found the boys' human clothes, I was fully expecting a scene where he lashes out at them and pushes his sons further away because that was what I expected from these kinds of dad characters, but no. He just tried to make his home more like the human world as best as he could (that being said he shouldn't have gone through their stuff to begin with, but... baby steps I guess?). I say all this to say that this version of Splinter leaning more into the dad side than the ninja master side was so good in concept, with him teaching his kids martial arts as a way to give them a tool to defend themselves against a prejudiced world, and it was almost as good in execution, but... Jackie Chan? Really y'all? I love me some Jackie Chan, but there are plenty of Japanese VA's I'm sure would love to take on this role. As a non-Asian, there's bound to be some blind spots in my analysis here, so feel free to call me on any blunders I've made. Thanks for the insightful critique!
this version of splinter isn’t any particular race. like in the original mirage comic, he’s not hamato yoshi. he doesn’t NEED a japanese actor here. hiring jackie chan makes sense cause like yk… he’s jackie chan
I'm sure someone in the casting department brought up how they would be using Jackie Chan footage during the training montage and thought it would be funny and ironic. Was it? Yeah but that shouldn't be the driving force of a casting decison. Overall, fully agree with you that hearing Jackie Chan voicing Splinter was a hard thing to push away.
I think a bigger problem is they literally erased all the Japanese American influence the other series’ had cultivated. Everything except the whole “ninja” thing was ignored, which is so surface level Japanese it’s funny. It just kinda makes it hard for people to sympathize with the discrimination story line because it feels like they erased the representation the tmnt originally had
Honestly, talking about just the dialogue of the turtles here, I actually saw the movie along side my 15 year old brother and he said to me that, if it wasn't for the dialogue, he would have liked the movie. Because no one he knows talks like that! I dont know if this is mostly a problem of the spanish latin america dub or the og dub (I cant watch it in English yet), but yeah, I have to agree with him. Most of the dialogue said by the turtles in this movie feels like what an adult guy thinks modern kids talk like, and at best it doesn't feel natural, or at worst, it undermines the emotional moments in the film (like the milking scene). It's really is a shame couse I really like some moments in the film! But the entire movie? Not really... I can see why people like it, but its not for me at all. Especially after that ending... That ending almost singlehandedly made me not want to watch the eventual show thats going to come out...
The English version’s dialogue is literally perfect, they literally felt like gen z turtles and it felt like I can just walk up to them and talk to them! It felt so natural
the english dub is a perfect representation of what teen boys talk like. they literally all talk like my little brother and his group of friends. probably because they let the actual teen cast improv a large chunk of the dialogue.
You cant criticize the movie on something that wasn't even apart of the movie. Thats like hating on a anime for how crunchyroll (OF ALL THINGS TOO) does their dubbing. The og creators usually aren't that involved in how other languages dub their shows/media.......no offense, but this was a mostly dumb take
im an 18 year old boy, some of it is kinda cringe for specific slang but thats cuz i dont really like that slang, how they talk makes complete sense and doesnt ruin anything
Please give the 2012 version a try. Your criticism of how disrespectful mutant mayhem is of japanese culture is valid. In the 2012 we have japanese descendants amongst the voice actors, writers, etc. Besides, in my opinion Splinter being Hamato Yoshi is the least disrespectful way to approach the TMNT universe. It simply makes no sense for the turtles to be so good at ninjutsu if their master wasn’t even a real ninja.
As much as I enjoyed the film and think it's easily up there as one of the best TMNT films, I can't help but feel like that there was a missed opportunity with Splinter's backstory and his parallels with Superfly We know that in the original comics that Splinter was the pet of Hamato Yoshi but was eventually killed by the Shredder. Sound familiar? It's almost identical to Superfly's backstory, both characters were close to a specific human that was killed in front of them, causing them both clear trauma. I felt like if they went with that story, not only would it make more sense with Splinter knowing how to teach the turtles how to fight since Yoshi was a ninja and Splinter use to copy him, but it could've been a great way to make the similarities between the two characters stronger, with Splinter still grieving over Yoshi's death and not wanting to go though that pain again with his kids. Now it could be eventually be revealed that he did actually was Yoshi's pet but we'll have to wait and see
Splinter STRAIGHT UP hid part of the origin from the kids. He glosses over it and says its not important. Its just vague enough for stuff to get added in the sequel!
Also: Splinter gets around. Here he's portraied by a chinese actor. On one of the old Turtles stage rock shows he was talking about his past in Korea! 🤦♀️ Hoo boi... let the man be japanese please
I did really like the spin of being able to actually like the villains (especially superfly) I did not need to ever see that one scene with Splinter and the cockroach though-
I enjoyed the film. I agree that Splinter needed a better backstory. The turtles felt like they were teenagers and it added to the charm. I think the series needed a new fresh change. Overall I feel like they pulled it off very well. The ending was interesting to see them in school. I guess will see how the sequel goes.
it was my understanding that in this rendition of tnmt, the turtles and Splinters accents were picked up by the media they watched. Splinter watched a ton of martial arts movies and picked up the chinease accent. I really like this explanation for their accents.
Everything that happened in Splinter's story arc allowed us to see him rocking that 'fro 100% worth it. And his Police Story-esque fight scene kicked ass
I really enjoyed it. The Turtles were actually TEENAGERS which created a lot of charm and it was so fun to see the characters interact with each other. It's not perfect, Its not Spiderverse but I had a lot of fun with the flick. I feel like some of the jokes shouldn't have carried on for too long (Like the Puke Girl joke) and I do feel like the final fight with Superfly could have been a bit more climactic. But theres definitely a lot of fun to be had. However, the film isnt for everyone.
"You could make an agreement about how no Splinter is a good Splinter" What? What do you mean by that? As in not in the story that much, or completely omitted from the story? I hope it's not the latter, because who in their right mind think a TMNT story without Splinter would work? Anyway, I still think they have time to do the IDW reincarnation story for Splinter. That would be the cool thing to do.
It’s interesting to me that they made Superfly an entire separate character created by Baxter Stockman in this universe whereas in the 2012 version, Stockman becomes a fly himself. This difference was pretty interesting to me, and this movie was still enjoyable to watch even if the universe it’s set in is a little different than what we’re used to.
Mutant mayhem was the first TMNT media I've seen and now I'm absolutely obsessed so it's cool seeing people's opinions who have grown up with the characters especially on the movie because I thought it was perfection but I don't really know the story as well
It left me wanting to draw pictures of the 1990s movie turtles kicking Seth Rogans ass, and then I race swap Seth Rogan sometimes since he loves to do that sh**
This movie actually really sucked for me because I grew up on the TMNT 2003 series, and it's just I missed the individuality of each Turtle. Like I feel that all four of them are different versions of Mikey now, and I understand that they're supposed to be like 15-year-old kids, but nowadays, 15 year old kids are really mature so they could have had like different personalities. I miss like Donnie's lab and the fact that he actually invent stuff and not just like a tech nerd that loves his phone and I miss Leo's like seriousness and Leadership, And I miss Raphs wrath, angriness and brutality. And Mikey was like the only one on point, but he was so much more timid than before which is really weird because he is usually so outspoken. So it was weird to see him like be a goof ball, but also be kind of shy that was weird.. So it was like an okay movie. I'm not looking forward for the series, but I guess now nowadays kids like more mess and Silliness , and I didn't like the animation either, sorry, it's too messy for me, too many colors and too many objects everywhere. And they move like they are in a comic book. It feels like going back through the animation instead of moving forward.
This video is a perfectly articulated opinion review video that doesn't rag too much on Mutant Mayhem that it feels insulting. I like the respect you did with this review even with the major gripes you had with the movie! I can't wait for all heck and sadness to break loose in the sequel OGHMEOHGMOHMGOM
13:32 You're actually right, there. Seth Rogen stated the movie wasn't going to have "long boring talking scenes". His biggest priority was having enough action in the film to keep the audience excited. That sounds like he didn't want the story to drag, but there's a reason we need talking scenes in moves: to learn about the characters and cool down from the action.
While I was excited to see a TMNT with such interesting design I was mostly sceptical for the exact same reasons as you (plus I've been a TMNT fan my whole life so believe me I've been sitting through a lot of mid to low tier turtle media). In the end i'm glad because it allowed the movie to surprise me in all the right ways.
I went into this movie wanting to love it so bad- like I really REALLY wanted to love it, but for me it was just 'alright'. I didn't think it was bad or anything, and there were some really cool parts and the whole 4 in 1 fight sequence, but over all I was honestly just like 'meh'. It didn't GRAB me and keep my attention. I should probably have seen it in cinema rather than on a streaming service because at least in the cinema I wouldn't have been able to just flick through my phone when I was zoning out. Although one thing that was interesting is that for the first time ever in a TMNT verse LEO was my favourite and not Mikey. but .....I wont go out of my way to watch it again. I didn't enjoy the art style if i'm honest- the over wonkiness has never been an art choice i like. HOWEVER I am at least curious to give the TV series a go and see if i connect more with that but over all I'd give this movie a 6/10 max.
I’m pretty sure it was originally supposed to be a Leo movie. If you look at some of the concept art and cut storyboards there’s a confrontation between only Leo and superfly
@@Cheesling oh yeah i like the show's style im just saying i hope the April crush thing does not go as far as 2012 did💀 but so far its pretty goof looking (also sorry when i wrote that i had no idea about the mutant mayhem show)
Fantastic video! I also felt uncomfortable with Splinter. In particular, that scene where Mikey says "ratting us out" and everyone reacts as if he just used a slur was really not it because like...do y'all not have any Asian or Jewish writers? There's also just the whole undercurrent of the turtles living as outsiders with the threat of violence and prejudice from their society that the movie does the sort of thing where the brutish Black-coded villain immediately jumps to the most violent solution to being a victim of prejudice possible so we can sympathize more with Splinter who sees himself in that and like...*groan.* If I were the one writing TMNT, I would make April biracial and Hamato Yoshi is her father or grandfather and just skip the rat aspect entirely. Maybe give him a pet rat or something if you really wanted it and just have goofiness ensue from maybe them hiding the mutant turtles from the rest of the family or something. That said, the movie was so very charming in other respects. I loved all the boys and I especially love how they took concepts of the kids that still rely on base traits but make sense for actual teens. Raph's "anger" for instance is he's that teen boy who does pushups every morning in his room because he doesn't have access to a gym and just needs to join a sport or something. Donnie doesn't even show his usual love of science and is a giant anime nerd. It feels very understandable and cohesive. I really like that Splinter genuinely wants his boys to have the world which is why he bothered bringing them out in the first place. Those scenes where the boys have to rip themselves away from the outside world and they show the light disappearing from the manhole is easily some of the best the movie has to offer. I still have a few concerns going into the series like the whole thing with Splinter you mentioned, the April/Leo crush (I would love it if they just kept it as a brief one-sided crush that later becomes a brother/sister duo but I don't want it to be a running thing), and the way they use slang which can veer into appropriation of AAVE very quickly. Thank you for the shoutout btw! It's good to see you back on the scene.
holy shit are you me i had the exact same issue with superfly and splinter. i felt like removing splinter from being asian kinda removed the baggage of making an asian man into a rat, and yeah its jackie chan playing him, but he doesnt act like jackie chan in the film other than his fight scene at the end. the fact that he taught him and his kids martial arts through watching kung fu and ninja movies is silly, but i had no issues with it. its like the movie was folding its influences back in on itself, because the 70s and 80s were the times people started to get into martial arts through media in america. it felt better to me than making him an asian man turned into a rat again. and god superfly. you expressed exactly how i feel about superfly. in a funny way though, i think they handled april's character a little better. she's a bullied black teen, but not specifically because she's black but because she embarassed herself with her peers. making april more of an alt black girl with an issue gave her some dimension, although i wish it was given more depth. but this was subtly showing how black teens also get bullied, even if not necessarily for their skin color.
no you know what, you're so right about the superfly thing. im so tired of this narrative of using the violent black man trope to contrast the cowardly asian man. it's also kinda :/ that splinter and superfly are treated like their problems with humans is this outlandish and unjustifiable thing. like yeah obv maybe don't jump to genocide as a solution but everyone around them makes it seem like being inherently distrustful of people who hurt them is unreasonable. knowing the majority of the exec team was white men and viewing this in the context of a racial allegory makes me side-eye that a little more
Its a good film But I HATE the "learning ninjitsu from tv" angle Wanna know why? It's because making Splinter"just a rat" takes away everything that makes Shredder an interesting character, it takes him from being a nemesis figure who cares about terminating the team, to just one more henchman
Honestly, I loved Jackie Chan as Splinter. He's got great comedic timing and tone. I also don't think it's a stretch for Splinter to be Asian. New York is a very large diverse city, and it's not farfetched to think that the animals that end up being the mutants grew up with different cultural influences. Maybe this version of splinter grew up in China Town and was influenced by the culture there.
2003, 2007 and surprisingly 2012 are the definitive tmnt iterations in animated form. If we want "something fresh" do Last Ronin. No more of this juvenile ish that is this movie. The turtles arent distinct, and it overall is just childish tone puts me off. Im good on this.
Hey, welcome back!! And this was such a well-balanced review--really put many of my own feelings towards MM into words. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing where they decide to take this iteration and I really enjoyed the art direction (I'm a sucker for colorful lighting and interesting stylistic choices), but I did have some hesitations around certain character portrayals (like Splinter) and the core cast could have been downsized fr. Still, it was really lovely to see TMNT on the big screen and I'm cautiously optimistic that some of these weaker points will be addressed in the series and/or potential sequel film.
I’ve already replied to a comment on this video about them going to school. It bothers me so much because it all boils down to one genuine question: “why?” Why in the world would we wanna put the turtles into school?! I feel like that puts them into a literal corner because the lore is not presented in a good way either!! The City of New York is basically their playground and they could do anything they wanted… and they want to go learn? I always felt like the street smarts is what MAKES them unique. They gotta think outside the box. plus are you even ninjas anymore if you go to school as a turtle… idk i’ve thought too much about this.
*Small spoiler alert/easter egg* "The lady" that tried to milk them was Cynthia Uutrom. The Krang species were called Utrom in the older series before the CGI one. That woman is a Krang inside of a humanoid robot! Just like the original show! Also (spoiler alert) fact that Shredder shows up tasked as a merc for the sequel was hype!
I know nothing about teenage mutant ninja turtles. But I saw this new movie for the first time today. I was brought to tears with how loving Sprinter was as a father. From a new outsider perspective I thought it was so beautiful. I think his stance was very realistic. Not sure how the other versions normally handle it though maybe it's better elsewhere. But I loved him, and he ended up being my favorite character 😳theory for why he has an accent based on not much but it's possible- maybe Mandarin is his first language. He is underground alone with no one, it makes sense he'd master the language and possibly even end up having an accent because that's the sole media he subjects his time to his whole life.
WHEN THE WORLD NEEDED THEM MOST THEY CAME BACK !!!!! in all seriousness im so excited to hear you babble about turtles again !! always excited to see you come out with new videos 💝💝
I tried watching this movie now that it's out on digital (health wise I still cant go out to theaters) and watched it with my partner - were both huge comic book nerds and grew up on the older TMNT movies and shows as well as the comics, and we couldn't get past Splinter's backstory. It took us so out of the movie that we could not finish watching the movie, it felt almost wrong taking out what made Splinter be, well, Splinter. His backstory is so crucial to the Turtles story that not including any of it and making it so that the "grand master" learned everything from movies and videos feel just... off and tone deaf. I don't mind when movies and shows poke fun at the source material but doing it in the way they did felt almost borderline offensive. It's rare for me to stop watching a movie because of changes especially in newer films taking a different spin on the original source material - hell I sat through the entirety of the new Transformers movie despite being heavily disappointed and frustrated with it, something about this movie though... I want to like it and watch it fully, but I just cant get into it.
I think the movie would've been better without the references (example: when Mark Ruffalo is bought up). Also, the turtles could've had more distinct personalities
i like this splinter and my head canon is that he has that accent because he learned to speak via martial arts VHS tapes and movies which are majority Asian
I love the new vision. Especially Leo loving April cause he's the leader and it makes sense why they would follow him since they want excrement anyway. I just think they should've stayed true to Splinters origin and it should've said 13 years later not 15 years. And they should've focused on them surviving and hiding in the shadows slowly training and becoming teenange ninjas. They touched on it for a second but the Turtles remained so immature that it should focus on them developing onto their characters by the time they're 15 or 16. 3 years 3 movies. It's still possible if they do prequels leading into Mutant Mayhem and being accepted. 1st could be all about them vs Splinter and survival training out of the sewers and the 2nd they could come across Casey Jones. Still before Mayhem which leads to the Shredder. It can't fail because that vision has never been told until now
I dunno why everyone's saying the dialogue wasn't natural. My friends and I totally talked like that in high school, speaking over each other and everything. Personally I'm just glad that the turtles actually sound like teens this time instead of 28-year-old dudes pretending to be teens and failing. Looking at you, Johnny Knoxville....
I loved this whole movie up until the last 30 or so minutes. I really was looking forward to see the turtles taking on the mutant army. Also the middle half felt like it didnt happen which is kind of a good thing but to me it felt too quick.
I should preface this by stating the obvious, being that everyone has preferences, everyone has a favorite version of these characters, and bias is inescapable. I will also say that I do not intend to come off as aggressive or angry, just that I want to vent some of the thoughts that I have had regarding the tmnt franchise and fandom in general, and I'm not personally attacking anyone I mention. That being said, @meat1939, @reina8284, and anyone else who leaves comments like these, I can see only two possible reasons for you to have posted them: either you didn't watch the review and are assuming from heybuwan's pfp and the thumbnail that anyone who liked rise just hates the more traditional iterations, or you watched the video and are blatantly disregarding the fact that she gave her legitimate gripes with the movie, none of which had to do with it being too traditional. She mentioned multiple times that her reasons for not liking Splinter have more to do with the casting stereotype and script of the movie not making him "traditional" in the sense that as far as we know, this Splinter is just some random rat, which takes away a core part of his identity that has been there since the original comics. She also never said that she didn't like the story because it was too similar to something we've seen before, but rather that it needed to be more focused on a single dynamic or a single character (such as Leo) which is something that we have seen in the majority of the tmnt movies. It is okay to like the movie despite these and disagree with the points given, but writing off the review as a Rise fan not liking the movie because it isn't Rise is not only disrespectful towards the content creator, but it is a serious misjudgement of what makes a good critique of a piece of art. Never mind that she said she enjoyed the movie for the most part, and that her gripe with the story was the execution and not the premise. Never mind that the only three direct comparisons to Rise were 1) the April romance, which was NEVER a part of the "traditional" turtles and she praised for allowing the relationship between Leo and April to be explored, 2) Splinter whose main issues were, as was previously mentioned, casting (which is a part of "traditional" tmnt's legacy, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone defend THAT decision) and his identity, and 3) the script not being as impactful as it could have been due to not being focused. No, she's just a Rise fan hating on a return to form for the franchise. In reality, every version of the turtles is unique and quite flexible in terms of story and characters, which is why it boggles my mind that after so many iterations people are still clinging on to their "ideal" turtles. What boggles my mind even more, though, is that it seems like half, possibly even more than half of the fandom has jumped on the bandwagon of hating on Rise because it is "too different." This movie had LOADS different, and yet people praise it to no end for having a few specific variables in common with their childhood turtles. This is not to say the movie is bad. If anything, it is exciting to see where the future takes us. I am just so sick and tired of people being so close-minded and arbitrarily attacking anyone who sees differently than them, especially over something as rediculous as a world where New York's resident heroes are teenage mutant ninja turtles. The reason that I say this towards "traditional" fans and not Rise fans is because, as far as I've seen, only those who actually love these characters and are willing to accept whatever comes next for them so long as it is a good piece of art (which I realize I can never actually define, but I stand by) are fans of Rise. Or Rise is their first introduction to these characters, in which case they have as much a right to love it as anyone does to their first Turtles. In the event that the people I have mentioned have for whatever reason returned to this video and somehow read all the way through this rambling comment, I am sorry for involving you, because this really isn't about you. Great video by the way, heybuwan.
Im really glad someone talked about splinter, he had to be one of the movies most confusing points for me. As much as I love the family moments, I just couldn't get behind the fact he was just a rat that happened to have an asian accent? Yeesh. And when he voiced over his backstory it gave the vibes, from a viewing standpoint that he always would have had an asian accent from mutation- Double yeesh..
Imma be honest I think splinter was lying to the turtles because of the way he said some things. I think taking away splinter and shredder’s connection is a bad move so I don’t think they would actually do that. But I could for sure be wrong
Even if splinters backstory wasn’t as well developed he was a great actor and fit perfectly with the whole theme of the movie. I was very happy to see Jackie Chan in this movie and I think he brought the character to life.

Also I think the only reason they immediately got a sequel movie and a show is because Nickelodeon is trying the “greenlight ANYTHING” thing Netflix is doing, so HOPEFULLY their not going to take it down early like Rise, but I’m not hopeful. Also #Saverotmnt

Honestly, I'm glad the Leo crush was just a very small thing in the movie. But man I'm 100% sure is going to be something important for the show and honestly that a BIG no for me...
I mean he doesn't simp for her like 2012 Donnie but considering this will have a show i will just "Yeah that's a yikes from me dawg"

MM seems kind of “gen alpha” while Rise caters to more of a “gen z” and running them side by side would be a nice way to bridge the gap we’re in where gen alpha is growing up but gen z are still pretty young
oops im rambling sorry
I actually don’t think that the Leo/April thing is going to be that big of a deal. In the end Leo asks April to prom or whatever, but she says, “wait, this is just as friends, right?” Soooo hopefully that means this is going nowhere near the whole 2012 Donnie and April thing lol
It seems pretty weird for Leo to have a relationship with April. in the 1990 film it was Mikey that liked her, in 2003 and 2012 it was donnie.
@@GhostToasters93 I don't think it was ever implied that 2003 Donnie liked April in that way.

@@harmonydew6486 Oh that's not bad then, since it ain't brought up in 2003 again and April hit it off with Casey.

It also locks those characters from getting the screen time they would usually get from the tv show to build up their personalities.
superfly's not dead, they had him as a normal fly in a jar at the end.
@@Dilopho well yeah I guess they could try to remutate him. But they'd still run into the problem of not being able to afford the guy if they brought him back in the series. If he does return it might be saved for the second movie if they decide to do that.

My theory for Splinter’s backstory is that maybe he was Hamato Yoshi but through some Shredder, science alien babble bullshit, turned him into a city rat and lost his memories of his original self. That might be reaching but hey, its TMNT, stupider shit has happened before.
That makes sense. Maybe some of the ooze affected Splinter’s memory which would actually be interesting.
That would be an interesting twist. And your right, stupid thing does happen, I once went to a library saw the comic section and grabbed the turtle comics that says classic in title. Two things that got me confused was one story that follows a little kid that circled back to the beginning, and the next story the turtles’ souls were transferred into appliances and mashed up products or mannequins…. i agree heavy with the master splinter thing. like i don’t like how he’s just a rat basically learning how to fight from a t.v. & without actual knowledge from his past when he was supposed to be human
Splinter back story: crazy scientist working in Chinese military camp trying to create mutated super soldiers and Splinter is the test rat that was trained in martial arts but then cast away and decides to train teen mutant turtles into ninjas.
As a half Asian man and a fan of Jackie Chan, I thought this version of Splinter was unique and pretty dope 🤷🏾♂️

Let’s use the example is Nicolas Cantu auditioned for a much bigger role than this, the casting crew would look on his record (Or whatever you would call it) see that he once played a main role in a movie where he also happened to be working with a lot of big name actors like Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, John Cena etc. and that would immediately make the crew think ‘This guy knows what he’s doing’ (This goes for all four of them of course, I was just using Cantu as an example)
This isn’t the first time something like this has been done in a movie, and it’s actually a pretty smart form of marketing and helping younger actors take their place in the industry
If this is true, then the crew is doing the best for the teen actors. That would be really great since talented people are hidden anywhere and do this helps them alot! (I think all of them doing a fantastic job, and wish them the best )
nioloas cantu is probably a bad example concidering he was the main character of a popular, long running and well preforming tv show
Yea they nailed it she was nit picky cause every celebrity add on was fire NOBODY was hoping for post to have a bunch lmao
I’m still convinced Splinter is lying to the Turtles about his history.
same i would love if the next movie exposes him doing this i love that trope

Thinking about it now, my biggest issue is probably the thing you touched on regarding how the story seems unwilling to commit to its more intense emotional moments. Leo, Casey's decision and Leo's sacrifice, etc)

2012 splinter is the best one hands down
really good review! this movie got me to rottmnt, and I'm so glad that it did!!
2012 and 2003 were still unique though
@@tobsonasanya4765 calling 12 unique is a stretch
This is the most unique tmnt arguably

@@goobertsnoobertwooberthes a rat. he doesnt have a race, THATS THE ISSUES YOU . omg?
I would like you to talk more about that, I also saw it in Latin Spanish and the truth is I didn't see a problem with the dubbing.
It simply makes no sense for the turtles to be so good at ninjutsu if their master wasn’t even a real ninja.
it definitely is, still the rat thing was.. eh
If this is going to be the replacement for rottmnt, I’m kinda happy and hope to see more from this universe
As much as I enjoyed the film and think it's easily up there as one of the best TMNT films, I can't help but feel like that there was a missed opportunity with Splinter's backstory and his parallels with Superfly
We know that in the original comics that Splinter was the pet of Hamato Yoshi but was eventually killed by the Shredder.
I did really like the spin of being able to actually like the villains (especially superfly)
I did not need to ever see that one scene with Splinter and the cockroach though-
I enjoyed the film.
It sucks that leatherhead didn't get much screen time
Everything that happened in Splinter's story arc allowed us to see him rocking that 'fro
100% worth it.
Mutant mayhem was the first TMNT media I've seen and now I'm absolutely obsessed so it's cool seeing people's opinions who have grown up with the characters especially on the movie because I thought it was perfection but I don't really know the story as well
Well said! The movie wasn't perfect, but considering what it could have been, it turned great! It left me wanting more TMNT
It left me wanting to draw pictures of the 1990s movie turtles kicking Seth Rogans ass, and then I race swap Seth Rogan sometimes since he loves to do that sh**
"Back to formula!?"
-Norman "somewhat of a scientist" Osborne
The belt buckles with initials are an Easter Egg from TMNT 1987.
6 IN DA MONIN POLICE AT MY DO 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
This movie feels more natural and realistic ngl
There was a whats up danger moment in the film for me, it was the montage of young splinter raising the baby turtles to that de la soul song
I’m pretty sure it was originally supposed to be a Leo movie. If you look at some of the concept art and cut storyboards there’s a confrontation between only Leo and superfly
Tbh I think it would be funny if splinter was rat that knew marital arts but also sounded like a sopranos character
I HOPE rise still has a chance not cause i don't want mutant mayhem but rise is a GREAT show to grow up on
honestly i want mutant mayhem to have a good run, and maybe if possible, rise could get more seasons!!
@@Cheesling oh yeah i like the show's style im just saying i hope the April crush thing does not go as far as 2012 did💀 but so far its pretty goof looking (also sorry when i wrote that i had no idea about the mutant mayhem show)
Rise of the TMNT is tons better than Mutant Mayhem. It's sad that nickelodeon ditched Rise to focus on this new version. Rise deserved better 🐢🐢🐢🐢
Fantastic video! I also felt uncomfortable with Splinter. In particular, that scene where Mikey says "ratting us out" and everyone reacts as if he just used a slur was really not it because like...do y'all not have any Asian or Jewish writers?
There's also just the whole undercurrent of the turtles living as outsiders with the threat of violence and prejudice from their society that the movie does the sort of thing where the brutish Black-coded villain immediately jumps to the most violent solution to being a victim of prejudice possible so we can sympathize more with Splinter who sees himself in that and like...*groan.*
If I were the one writing TMNT, I would make April biracial and Hamato Yoshi is her father or grandfather and just skip the rat aspect entirely.
It's good to see you back on the scene.
holy shit are you me i had the exact same issue with superfly and splinter.
i felt like removing splinter from being asian kinda removed the baggage of making an asian man into a rat, and yeah its jackie chan playing him, but he doesnt act like jackie chan in the film other than his fight scene at the end. the fact that he taught him and his kids martial arts through watching kung fu and ninja movies is silly, but i had no issues with it. its like the movie was folding its influences back in on itself, because the 70s and 80s were the times people started to get into martial arts through media in america. it felt better to me than making him an asian man turned into a rat again.
and god superfly. you expressed exactly how i feel about superfly. in a funny way though, i think they handled april's character a little better. she's a bullied black teen, but not specifically because she's black but because she embarassed herself with her peers. making april more of an alt black girl with an issue gave her some dimension, although i wish it was given more depth. but this was subtly showing how black teens also get bullied, even if not necessarily for their skin color.
no you know what, you're so right about the superfly thing. im so tired of this narrative of using the violent black man trope to contrast the cowardly asian man. it's also kinda :/ that splinter and superfly are treated like their problems with humans is this outlandish and unjustifiable thing. like yeah obv maybe don't jump to genocide as a solution but everyone around them makes it seem like being inherently distrustful of people who hurt them is unreasonable. knowing the majority of the exec team was white men and viewing this in the context of a racial allegory makes me side-eye that a little more
I mean April made a rat joke in the 90s movie too so there's that
@@cj3670Yeah, but that was the _90s_
I would hope that we wouldn’t be comparing ourselves to a point further back filled with more racial stereotypes
I don’t get why people keep bringing up race and social politics. It’s a TMNT movie man.
Its a good film
But I HATE the "learning ninjitsu from tv" angle
Wanna know why? It's because making Splinter"just a rat" takes away everything that makes Shredder an interesting character, it takes him from being a nemesis figure who cares about terminating the team, to just one more henchman
Honestly, I loved Jackie Chan as Splinter. He's got great comedic timing and tone. I also don't think it's a stretch for Splinter to be Asian. New York is a very large diverse city, and it's not farfetched to think that the animals that end up being the mutants grew up with different cultural influences. Maybe this version of splinter grew up in China Town and was influenced by the culture there.
I want to talk about this early and not late but I can’t see the movie yet so ima leave this comment here and come back to it once I see mutant mayhem
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Is Getting a Sequel and a TV Series
It bothers me so much because it all boils down to one genuine question: “why?”
Why in the world would we wanna put the turtles into school?!
It was peak! And the mid credits was 🔥🔥
Nothing beats the 1990s film.
Sorry.
SHE IS *BACK*
When the squad came out to super fly that was one of my favorite scenes lol
Do you have hope for the TV series next spring?
*Small spoiler alert/easter egg*
"The lady" that tried to milk them was Cynthia Uutrom.
The fact that splinter is supposed to be Japanese and he isn't even Japanese is so SUS though 🫣 lots of missing lore!!! You are right
Watch the 2012 or 2003 series. You’ll thank me
I personally just miss the Japanese American vibe that tmnt *always* had. For this movie, they just…dropped it
WHEN THE WORLD NEEDED THEM MOST THEY CAME BACK !!!!!
in all seriousness im so excited to hear you babble about turtles again !! always excited to see you come out with new videos 💝💝
It’s funny how the turtles are the only ones with symmetrical faces even tho their the “ugly” ones
The 90s hip hop was a dream of mine to come up in a tmnt movie I always had a slight head canon that they were all huge east coast hip hop fans
BUWAN SWEETIE I'VE MISSED YOU 😭 Love the new video! Glad to see my worries with it are justified 😔😍
