I like how the stories go dark but not ¨oh everything is dark so we HAVE to make it dark¨. It feels like it comes out natrually and I'm never bored.
Well ninja turtles was orginally dark anyway so it should feel natural. Mirage comics tmnt was dark and thats the source
@@jnightmare0
The Image comics were incredibly dark as well. It was never finished but they plan to in the future.
@@irvinmorales1409 They actually did get finished not too long ago, it got 3 new issues and wrapped up. It was rebranded as "Teenage Mutant ninja turtles Urban Legends", and relaunched in full color.
As a long time turtle fan I agree that IDW has done the best job at making the best possible incarnation of turtles. I would love to have a video game based on this world or a serious mini series that is more grown up like this comic series has done.
Joel Plough Have you played Mutants in Manhattan? It uses the IDW style for the video game, but it wasn't very well received.
Matt Draper I have played it. I thought it was a well put together game but it could have been more. I don't think it's nearly as bad as most of the reviews say it is.
Joel Plough there is game based off the comic which is TMNT mutants in Manhattan
Joel Plough Agreed
It takes al the best events from the cartoons, films and previous comic incarnations and blends them all together to create a new incarnation of the turtles. The stories are great, characters have depth and art is pretty good. I can understand why Matt consider a the comic as the definative version of the ninja turtles
When i first read the TMNT IDW comic, i was shocked by how they brought raph into the story, being that he was separated from his family. That really got hooked to the story.
Agreed, it gors to show that right off the bat they were doing something different with this story.
It explains a lot on why he’s so mad
IDW really did a good job on the story. Only one thing though: the baby turtles looked like sea turtles instead of terrapins when they first got their contact with the ooze
2003, 2012, and I.D.W. are the G.O.A.T.
G.O.A.T. ?
@Campion1201 G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time).
Now THIS is how you reboot a franchise properly, by making a fresh new take on something beloved with still keeping true to what made the original popular among fans to begin with.
I like that they give Mikey more prominence than in other incarnations by making him more serious, they make him the turtle that best gets along with Leo and is the voice of reason
I never cared for TMNT before this series, and it made me love the property more than I ever thought I would.
IDW series is without a doubt the best incarnation of the franchise. Nothing else even comes close. From the moment I read the way they explained the red head bands (in solidarity for their lost brother) I knew this series was going to be something special by incorporating the old and bringing something new.
giftofgab247 Mirage TMNT 2003 Elitist!
No one likes an Elitist fanboy
@giftofgab247 Look everyone appreciates the original Mirage comics, but it was written by 2 guys with a unique idea in a time frame where it worked. The reality is the story telling isnt great and i mean if you like the srt style thats cool. But IDW is objectivelyt better story telling Done by a far more experienced Eastmen and help from verterean writers and artist. And i may not like all the artist they employ. Mateus Santiloco is objectively the best the turtles have ever been drawn. Ive not seen a drawing of the turtles that is anywhere near what that man does. Its your right to prefer the image comics but calling someone elses opinion bullshit is not fair. Particulary when they have more of an argument for their opinion than you do yours.
I personally think 2012 cartoon is equal to it
@@zenxpopo2116
I enjoyed the 2012 cartoon, but I just haven't seen any other version of TMNT tell the stories as good as they have with the IDW comic.
@@SeanUCF you should check out 2003
IDW does some really good stuff with the IP they handle. Their take on Ghostbusters is a favorite of mine.
Alex Greff I agree! I've also heard that their Transformers comics are great, but I haven't had a chance to read them yet.
Their Godzilla comics are some of my favorite.
Sometimes. Their G.I.Joe was abysmal and ended in a boycott after the last writer (sitterson) made crazy 911 tweets, attacked fans, and a bunch of other crap.
They do Ghostbusters comics?!
Also, IDW is doing a good job with Sonic the Hedgehog especially after the end of the original Archie run.
as a long tmnt fan this is the best version and the comic does not have a repeat button like marvel and dc
Agree 100% IDW is the standard of quality TMNT fans deserve.
I have NEVER seen a comic creator have their flagship book blow up, become an enormous beloved franchise, and STILL jump back in the inks and the pages and want to give it another crack
Its completely wild to think that Eastman co-created them, and then came back and rE-iNtErPrEtEd ThEm BeTtEr
That just doesnt happen 😮
This is definitely my favorite version of the turtles. They stay true to the characters while still throwing you for a loop. It's violent at times without loosing the fun of the turtles. I feel like I could ramble forever about it but since since I started reading these from vol 1 I was completely blown away.
The storyline of the first 100 isuues is phenomenal, along with History of the Foot Clan and Shredder in Hell. It becomes an easy favorite for me!
All these different versions shows how amazing the franchise is. Especially since different people like different versions.
I really love the artwork and they change it back and forth during each arc.
So It's like the "Ultimate Spider-man" of Turtles
i prefer the term spectacular.
Emmanuel Mondesir he means the ultimate comics not the show
i was not refering to the ultimate cartoon but imo the spectacular spider-man was a better version of Spidey than even the ultimate comics
Emmanuel Mondesir you know spectacular spider man is basically ultimate Spider-Man animated
@@emmanuelmondesir1314 he wasnt he even talking bout that all he said was its like the ultimate spiderman version of tmnt
2:40
Dude, you kidding me?
The 2003 series had the turtles turning into Goddamn _dragons._
Them being reincarnations is pretty freakin' tame by comparison.
Wait, what?
Where in the '03 series does that happen? I wanna see it!
@@jesseking1403 in the missing season
@Jacob Wood it is
Those stories were adapted from the previous comics 💀
I really liked that season as a kid (mostly cause it was rerun on the 4kids block a lot after it aired. Tried to go back and rewatch it on here in 2020 and wound up not enjoying it
"Four turtles, four brothers. Genetically reborn in the sewers on New York City. Named after the early great Renaissance Italian masters, and were trained as ninjas by their rat sensei in the martial arts form of ninjutsu. They have battled many petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated creatures, and alien invaders, while they attempted to remain hidden underground from society."
Alden R. Davis 2007 movie :-)
Ok, you sold me. I’ve been on the fence about getting into TMNT comics (confusing af to a newby) but I’ve heard enough praise of the idw versions to grab the first volume. Cheers!
Dude you have to! It's a dream come true to any TMNT fan! Amazing stories plus awesome art. Hope you enjoy.
Idw first 100 issues and the og mirage run *chef kiss*
I’m a huge TMNT fan and this comics hits all the perfect notes. All your videos are amazing. But any chance you might consider doing a video of The City Falls story? In my opinion it’s like the Killing Joke of the TMNT comics . Shredder really is amazing there.
Definitely agree with this video... for when it was made.
Issues 1 to 50 by Eastman and Waltz are a MASTERPIECE of comic storytelling, and while 51-100 aren't quite as good, they're still absolutely AMAZING.
And then those two followed that up with The Last Ronin, easily one of the best graphic novels IN A LONG TIME.
But because they stepped away to write that, the Campbells took over as of Issue 101, and things went downhill.
The Mutant Town storyline that immediately followed on Issue 100 was a narrative slog compared to anything that came before, Jennika was shoehorned into her role way too quickly and bluntly, and characters made stupid decisions that don't make sense for them.
But mostly, the whole thing just feels like a massively squandered opportunity to go full "Escape From New York" with multiple gangs and factions both inside and outside of Mutant Town fighting each other in a series of escalating conflicts to either take it over or destroy it.
The only good part of the post-100 era is the Armageddon Game, and its full potential failed to be realized thanks to all the wasted time from Mutant Town.
Still, glad to have a whole one hundred issues (and change) of EXCELLENT TMNT comics!
“Heroes In A Half-Shell, Turtle Power!”
I started giving the IDW comics attention when Santolouco took over as lead artist
And MAN is Santolouco's art work _gorgeous!_
I love this series with everything in me!!!! OG TMNT fan....this is the best TMNT comic iteration and dare I say best iteration overall...edging out the 2012 cartoon series!
IDW TMNT, TMNT 2012 and TMNT 2007 are my favourite incarnations, the designs are fantastic and also are the stories
I very much enjoyed this analyzation of IDW's Tmnt as a whole, and agree with quite a number of your points.
This is also really is a good endorsement for the series.
One VERY minor thing i'd just like to say.
8:22 - the Mirage Turtles can't really be classified as mere bloodthirsty murderers.
Outside of issue#1 when they were specifically sent on a mission to avenge the death of Splinter's owner and Master, Hamato Yoshi.
Any other time they'd take a life was in self defense.
Myconius Maximus Glad you enjoyed the video! Good point!
That's a good point but the mirage are still for kids 13 or above not 12 or under.
Someone in the comments said they want a TMNT video game and I'll say I've stated for a while that I want a TMNT game with the following elements: drop-in/drop-out 4-playerr co-op similar to Transformers: War for Cybertron, open world/sandbox set in New York like Marvel's Spider-Man, above ground and sewer missions with day/night cycle where night makes it easier to go topside with less civilian traffic but more gang/Foot encounters and sewers not only has your primary home/hub but other potential conflicts as well. I once wrote down my idea and someone said it'd be an absolute nightmare for developers to make, but it'd be fun as hell. Also, I just started reading the IDW series. I've read the first two volumes and really enjoy it.
We need a animated series based on IDW Comics
I had an art teacher who loves the turtles. I'm gonna recommend this to him
Really? I would've like to see that 😂 I would speak with the teacher so happily
It's only normal for me to fall in love with the IDW Turtles because I'm a very old fan of them since 1987. I watched the cartoon series, the live action movies, and read the old comic books as well. Now I find the IDW as a very lovable blend of all the good old memories.
My love for TMNT comes from the old cartoons and the 2000s cartoon. Loved those.
I think the next reboot they do should not be rated R but almost there on highest PG-13. Because I’d like to see the original turtles on the big screen.
Check out tmnt the last ronin
What an awesome review! Makes me want to go read right away
Charlie Thanks! This series has been a joy to read from the very start.
Would be interested in seeing you discuss more of the IDW library. Ghostbusters crossover, the lone ranger, Zoro or even the run on the green hornet all have things to offer.
In other words...IDW knows how to pick the correct writers to make convincing and emotional character arcs.
Thanks for the Great Video.I have been on the fence about picking up this series and you have just convinced me to give it a try.
This comic is what made me fall back in love with the TMNT. The 80s cartoon is too dated and slight to hold my attention, and while I still love the original 1990 film, it wasn't enough to keep my interest in the franchise going. Then I picked this up at random and fell in love all over again, back-tracking to the 2003 animated series and following the 2012 series that wrapped up not that long ago.
I just discovered this comic series, and the fact that it was running since I was in high school is mind-blowing to me.
The new comics with the Jeenika character are awsome and still prove that modern day comic's can still kick ass it's just that manga has been wiping the floor with Dc and Marvel as of lately, although that new Spider-Man comic book sereis looks promising
Great video, Matt! I need to read the new Turtles/IDW run, I'm a huge fan of the original Eastman & Laire series
Owen Likes Comics Thanks, Owen! If you want to start it, I recommend reading from the beginning, but City Fall is also a good arc to jump into if you want to go deeper.
A few visual hiccups here and there, just some harsh cuts on your panels & backgrounds where a fade would have been better. Having said that, I've never seen nor read anything on TMNT's, but your video had me completely entertained and broadened my appreciation and understanding of the franchise and this specific incarnation. Good job Draper. Keep it up. xx
Wen Bilson Thanks for the feedback! Sometimes they slip through with having to animate so many panels. Glad you enjoyed it! If you read the series, let me know what you think!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS ive been a fan of the idw tmnt 4 awhile ive gotten 2 like issue60 something and its amazing the best tmnt comic this video is great
Walter Streete Thank you! I may eventually circle back to TMNT and do more videos on this series or other series/shows.
It's so dope I'm Glade I tagged on for the ride! City Fall was my favorite arch next to Secret of the foot clan!
I've been a massive Turtles fan since I was 3, I really really enjoy most incarnations, iterations, and variants of the Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is my absolute favorite American multi-media franchise, and the IDW TMNT comic series is by far the best version of the Turtles in my opinion and my favorite. I hope it continues to be a great series well into the future.
this is what the new movie should be based on... give us something to be proud of
This is the video that convinced me on IDW TMNT. I'm on issue #51 and still diggin it!
I love the video and the IDW version of the turtles. Though I feel the need to point out that when you're talking about Mateus Santolouco's artwork at about 07:54 the picture of Alopex is actually made by Sophie Campbell. Also, I want to shout out Ben Bates who is my favorite IDW TMNT artist.
COWABUNGA!!!! this was a great vid dude
I've read read it and I could say that it is maybe the greatest tmnt comic book
I was really surprised when I read volume 1 and I saw Leo and Donnie having a bit of a rivalry which I think is fun due to Leo and Raph butting heads in almost every incarnation
I've been slowly getting into the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series in the last several months since you know covid-19 I've been picking up a few issues and I have to say I'm very much impressed.
But I definitely have to go back to the very beginning to see how it all starts for me to really get a grass where I land on the Sirius develey with the issues I purchased I think it was issues 65-73 and 80 through 92.
@1:18.that silhouette artwork is phenomenal.id put that on a canvas and hang it on my wall.fingers crossed for the rumoured live action tv series.
P.s. i really enjoyed this vid man.took my mind of the craziness going on everywhere.👍❤from🏴
Loved the franchise since i was a kid, and this video sold me on checking this comic book out
The IDW Turtle Comics were really the first comic series I ever read. I think I might have a soft geeky spot in my heart for any kind of turtles cannon.
Excellent video man, your channel deserves way more views.
I love the art work you choose to put on the video great job!!
Got volume 1 yesterday finished it a day later ..love this ...I ordered volume 2 and 3. .ready for Wed to get my head back in it
As a fan of the tmnt I need to read these! It's a shame I haven't. When the new movie or if a tv show is made I really hope it captures the wonder of what you said is im this one. Set in the 1980s with that wonderful sense of spirit, heart and nostalgia.
Looks like TMNT is simply can fit in All kinds of Genre
I love the IDW's tmnt comic.
Well done! I’ve been reading since issues 1 and you hit every beat. Great video
Started reading a year ago after I watched this video, now I'm caught up and a true fan
Wow you actually acknowledged that the 2000s (my favorite TMNT) exists!
Excellent series overall from the writing to the art im a huge TMNT fan and this is the best incarnation of them yet. PS matt can you cover the last ronin?
Really enjoyed the nickeloden version. Just recently bought book 1 and 2. About 2/3rds through the 1st
Surprised that there was no mentioning of the crossovers the Turtles had with the Ghostbusters (IDW series) or Batman
Its a perfect balance between TMNT 1984 and TMNT 1987 and yet it also bring new things without undoing anything and expande upon the lore and because of that I love it.
I just got a turtles comic today and it was awesome!!!
Great video dude!
Thank you so much for this very well done overview, it has a lot of useful informations and it convinced me to buy the TMNT IDW comics bundle on Humble Bundle 🤓
I would like to see a feature length film based on this incarnation.
Oh and take the Turtles away from Michael Bay PLEASE!!!!
My first TMNT comics are these ones. 2003 series was my first touch with TMNT, the scene where four Foot elite fights against Leo. It had influence on me and to my liking to these days. I am the one who looks at those line soldiers and how they are portrayed.
This is my favorite version of the Footclan. I like Elite Guards most and the fact that they separated assassin & bodyguard dual role of Mirage comics into Foot Assassin and Elite Guard branches. Makes more sense to me. I also prefer this version of Karai, my favorite kunoichi and Footclan leader.
By the way, do you know what these footninjas with shirts looking like fishnet shirts under their ninja gi are officially called? They seem to be higher ranking than regular grunts.
For me was the 2003 series too when i saw the TMNT franchise the first time and it became one of my favorite franchises
This version of the turtles are the best version
PREACH. You speak the truth, Sir.
The. Definitive. Ninja. Turtles.
Absolutely effing right and I will fight anyone who disagrees.
Kung-fu? Ninjutsu.
Sanctity of life? Ninjas are literally assassins. xD
Dude, You are literally amazing.
I have to admit, they sure did developed well the antagonist and make them even worse them in the mirage.
Shame the 2014 didn't adapt the IDW comics into the movie. Maybe the first volume/arc of the comics.
Great video. As much as I love all the idw stuff, the Mirage Studios run was my first love.
I enjoy the crossover the turtles had, both with batman and the Ghostbusters.
The main storyline is “City at War” like in the original Mirage comics?
So the last ronin storyline fits well within idw rendition
No.
@Matt Draper About The 2003 edition of TMNT, The last 2 seasons got the Lighter & Softer treatment.
I'll always love the 03 turtles
Wow well done. Any word if Nick and production will begin to pull from the idw comics for future movies?? Perhaps the 2020 reboot. Would live to see a Japanese animated turtles in Japanese and of course in English . We could have turtles movies once every two years like an American James Bond what American cinema is lacking.
I saw some panels that didn't like in the latest chapters, so I think I may drop it.
They still hold up 5 years later.
Not anymore. Fell off so hard after issue 100
How so?
Now I really need to check the idw comics out
TGRI was not a thing in IDW, TCRI was. But not until a very, very long time later, and it was run exclusively by Baxter Stockman to generate his machines, using money he funneled from Krang. And didn't last very long, disappointingly. Thanks, Null and Zodi.
The ooze that mutated the turtles came from his previous company, StockGen.
This is the series that got me into TMNT, thanks to Krang's storyline and the Utroms. Who I'm stoked to see August-September through the Trial of Krang and Dimension X mini.
^This is true. TCRI was only ever renamed TGRI in Tmnt2: Secret of the Ooze.
IDW didn't bring TCRI into the story until issue #46.
Hopefully Baxter can get IDW's incarnation of TCRI back up on it's feet?
I would think he could try, but after everything that went down in the start of their TMNT Universe series, I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon. Unless Krang manages to track down Stockman, should he escape his trial in issue 74/75, which I'm guessing he will judging by the synopsis.
Katie Kunkler Katie Kunkler You're right about that. I used the reference as a generality about the Turtles in their common history across the various incarnations, but it's a little different in he IDW run.
This video made me start reading the series, I’m on volume 2
Maybe some comics publishers ought to take you on as a marketing type person. You seem pretty good at selling people on the right stuff.
Best super hero comic of the last 10 years.
I want to read these now!😀👍
could you take a look at IDW's Transformers Comics?
2:04 Sophie Campbell's art of the Turtles always captures their youth. These are TEENS after all.
I just wish more people realized some of the genius bits of the TMNT 2007 animated movie. I've always thought that movie was criminally underrated.
The voice cast (aside from Mikey), the rainy Nightwatcher/Leo fight scene, the characterization of the Turtles...
spencer, it not really that great honestly. i had good animated but that`s about it
Just finished volume 2..volume 3 will be here Tuesday
Great review man!
I never read TMNT but loved 2000s cartoon. Now IDW comics are in humble bundle. Should I read it?
