Lever Gun Review! Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag

  • Compact with a big bark, it's time we take a look at the fabulous Marlin 1894. Of course I had to get in .44 Mag, a beloved cartridge for me. We take it out in the snow and the heat to see how this stainless, laminated wood big bore performs.
    TaticalDoodle and Sean the TNPr help and both fall in love with the gun too. TD is here for the review too; I have to hold him back from his LockTite rant.
    We find this iteration of the 1894 to smooth, fast, adequately accurate, and just plain cool. A vintage Marlin 336C in .30-30 is present as we bounce briefly to POU. Other versions and calibers are discussed. We do love the .44 Mag but we won't gush here acting like it's our first choice.
    We probably shot this gun a bit much for the review but we find it addictive as we do with all good lever guns. Downsides are present and they're discussed. The 1894 ain't cheap and that would be primary. But in the end you'll see how Marlin is still putting together one the baddest and coolest lever guns out there...still!

    Hi TNPrs! Project still strong and working hard thanks to TNP Patreon. Remember TNPP gets the videos first and some never post on the main channel! Here's some TNPr comments from Patreon, join the fun and full flow of TNP content: www.patreon.com/Nutnfancy
    "Dudes! Nutn & TD thanks a ton for the OSW review. This was very refreshing. If anyone ever discounts the capabilities of a lever gun, I encourage them to watch some Cowboy Action videos on YT. Those guys can shoot them soooo fast, granted they’re light 38 spl loads, it shows that the guns still have a ton of potential. A serious competitive option would be the Henry Model X in 44 or 357. They now have side loading capability, they come with polymer MLOK furniture and you can find them for $750 (you have to look really hard). This may have been filmed prior to the Model X release though. As always excellent content! 1w Tacticaldoodle Well, fast to shoot, but very slow for most to load. You can practice but there's a learning curve and it's not something I think I'll do all that well if I'm takin' fire. If only there were some kind of speedloader kinda like shotgun tubes. 2 1w Load 2 replies Arthur Krieger Siiick gun! Glad to see Marlin is putting out quality! 1w Leif52Pickup Dang it, I really want this and an accompanying revolver. Just too cool. 1w Kenny VanCleave I have one in 45/70 and it rocks. I bet, without taking my shoes off I harvested at least thirteen bucks with my Marlin 1894. It has the beautiful stainless steel frame and the gray stock. One of the best purchases I've made./////////Alexander Brittain Not the 10mm review I was hoping for. But it is worth a watch none the less. 1w The Nutnfancy Project I got a 10mm pistol review I'll edit together for ya~ It was filmed in the desert, hopefully the audio is ok~ just now EthanRX Great review guys thanks for the content! Might have to pick one of these up soon. I have a Ruger 44 carbine that was my mentors who passed away so I don’t like to shoot it too much. This could scratch my 44 rifle itch quite nicely! 1 1w Patriot Love the tabletop! Don't get me wrong the bunker is cool, but I love the tabletop format. 1 1w The Nutnfancy Project Thank you, glad to hear that too! just now Outrider950 I had both the Winchester 94 Trapper and the Marlin 1894P chambered in .44. They were sold off many years ago to close friends. I found that I just wasn’t shooting them anymore. And then you post this.....argh...now I want another one. I really don’t like you. 1 1w Tacticaldoodle If you're function-first, you'll appreciate the ability to mod the newer ones. Having a sweet red dot is awesome on them, and that' not even mentioning the sweet sights now. No dickin' around with modding older ones and worrying about threading it wrong. 7d Load 1 reply POIsuit47 Another lever action review! Nice!! I always loved lever guns, something cool in my opinion bout old age weapons. And this one and others are definitely on my list to buy! I also wonder if for my first rifle it should be a lever gun such as this or a proper semi-auto.... hmmm 1 1w Ryan Benn I've wanted a marlin 1894 for a long time and now it has a nutnfancy stamp of approval. I'd prefer the 30-30 but my state has restrictions on hunting with that cartridge. 1 1w The Nutnfancy Project I will be reviewing the Marlin 336 Dark Ops too! In .30-30 it will be hunting legal. It did not like the S&B flat nose bullet but others worked great. 1 7d Colin Ford Fantastic video Nutn and TD!! 1 1w Jacob Hurst Wind River was such an excellent movie! Glad to hear the shout out to it! 1 1w Zachary Jackson Hey nutn... remember when we all had guns and marched on the Utah Capitol and no one got shot or hurt and there was no property damage? 1 1w The Nutnfancy Project Yeah I do remember that. Apparently the Marxists can do that and a lot more. Like painting inflammatory political symbols on the streets and killing children. I don't see pushback on it either except from us small voices. 1 7d Plumber Angelo The levergun is real! Man she is nasty, old school cool. 1w Ricky Kurtz Hey LTC, I own several Marlin level guns and enjoy them all. I last year purchased a Marlin Guide gun model GBL in .45/70, installed the picatinny rail and a Vortex Scout scope, Diamond D leather Butt Cup, Diamond D D4 large lever leather loop wrap, and a Turner 1.25” Leather Match sling and really enjoy this rifle. I have had a Marlin 1895s in .45/70 for years that I use for protection against bears in the Mountains above Ojai California up above Rose Valley between the 6500 and 8000 foot level. Never had to use it to protect against a bear but it was way cool shooting. Load used are 430 Gr hard cast lead. Sorry, but I disagree with you on scout scopes. On lever guns in the woods I find I can acquire a target faster and not worry about scope eye. Terrific presentation, thank you and your team for your hard work putting these presentations together. Ricky from IBM 1 1w The Nutnfancy Project Great comment Ricky, thanks. No worries on the disagreement...it's approved! The .45-70 is a rocking cartridge. I don't have a need for that in my systems but in AK I'd probably put one in inventory. Most fishing guides in Brown Bear territory are using 12 ga with slugs up there. 2 7d Chris Marchi Very nice 7d Ricky Kurtz Hey LTC, Thanks !!! When I do not feeling like fielding a rifle I have 2 4” S&W 500 Magnums, on a Galco/S&W leather rig, and one 8” S&W 500 with a S&W scope(not the best scope and was pulled from the market because the concussion would break the reticles). These guns were purchased the 1st month of production. Typically loaded with a750 Gr hard cast lead projectile traveling between 1350 and 1400 fps. The Marlin rifles are the best. I have a 336C as well and would not part with my Marlins for love or money lol. Really enjoy you presentations, I alway learn something. Again thanks to you and your team !!! Ricky from IBM 1 7d Tacticaldoodle Them five hundos will probably be worth a pretty chunk soon enough. The original bear scrollworked S&W's were unappreciated upon release, I expect similar in the future. Seems like most guys who bought the 500's just for range fun seldom hold onto them for long, ultimately they'll end up being rare enough to build scarcity in the right sizing. The short ones with the orange pelican case were rad, but I haven't seen one in years. 3d Zachary Jackson Tim Vetere says they may have watermelons in about two weeks or so 7d Zachary Jackson PSA for old school IHF TNPers 7d Joshua kinnunen The moment I saw a lever gun on the table, before any voices could be heard, I said “TD needs to be in on this one” - Win! 5d Bluegill097 Lever gun Nirvana in TNP! freaking awesome 5d Bismarck Stripper clips guides are available for the mini-14, I can't speak to how good they are. 5d Tacticaldoodle Part of the fun would be the experience of opening it up like a break action shotgun. Every kid with a breaker 20 gauge pretends he's shooting grenades out of it like the terminator, an AR would combine the fun of that with a garand action. Dunno why, just seems like it would be a good feeling nailing a speed load like that. 3d Casey Jones Great review, glad you aren’t overlooking Marlin. They aren’t the most popular name but have been around forever 3d Mike Maddox Henry has side loaders now."

    • @johnturner5893
      @johnturner5893 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @Thermopylae2007
      @Thermopylae2007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@johnturner5893 Valid question. I have an 1895 Big Loop that fits that role, but I would like a .44mag for less expensive reloading and plinking (not to mention mild recoil for the latter). I might instead look at a .38/357 for that, but the .44 still seems appealing as I would prefer the extra power for deer and it could double for bear defence if I am not carrying the 45/70.

    44 Mag Lever action and 44 Mag revolver loaded up with SJHP 44 Specials. Can never go wrong. I still am blown away by how under-utilized the .44 Special cartridge is and how it isn't as popular as some others. You can get similar to .357 power, greater wounding, while remaining at lower pressures; quieter, less recoil - obviously more than .38 Special, but less than .357. It's a pleasure to shoot - like .45 LC.

    This was my first gun when I turned 18. It was when Marlin was having quality control issues and maybe they still are. The gun was finicky with ammo and screws would frequently loosen up and fall out. It only ever liked Magtech. Sold that thing long ago and now I have a JM stamped .357 which I love very much.

    A year ago I bought a raffle ticket who's proceeds went to an LE charity, and won this same rifle!
    I've had a bunch of people ask to buy it from me but I'm keeping it. I added a red dot, a leather wrap to the lever, a leather shell holder on the stock, and finally, a simple leather carry strap.
    I sighted both the dot, with qd lever, and irons at 50 yards. The gun shot beautifully. I found Hornady 240gr XTP to be the most accurate of the ammo I tried.
    And I also had the rail come loose while sighting in.

    1894 was my first deer rifle, in 44 mag. It was the blued version back in the early 80s. I used to think it was too weak back then and bought a Ruger M77 in 30-06. But these days with loads like Underwood and Buffalo bore, it does anything I would need down here in Georgia. The first center fire rifle I ever shot was my uncle's 336 in .35 Remington. I was amazed by the feel of that gun. Later in life I became obsessed with the .44 Magnum caliber, so the 1894 became my object of desire. But I was shopping in the Obama years and there were none to be had. When I did find one, it happened to be an 1894PG, which has the pistol grip like the 336. I had no idea how lucky I got. Turns out they only manufactured the PG for two years, so I dumb lucked into a collector's item. Still my favorite firearm. My daughter loves it too. Especially how handily it dispatches watermelons! 😁

      The BLR was the only good lever-action I've ever shot.
      Between the Win '73, '87, '92', 94, and Marlin '94, they would either jam while performing basic functions, or cut you with jutting pieces of metal, either inside the gun during jam clearing, or outside the gun from sheer bad quality.
      Not the BLR though. That one was fast, smooth, reliable, and accurate!

    One of my dream guns. I love the second kind of cool 😎 of a lever gun. My Dad and youngest brother both have Marlin 30-30s so I want one in a caliber that starts with a 4. I have been debating between .45-70, .444 Marlin, or .44 Mag. I also want a .44 Mag revolver for hunting and range fun, so I have thought about going with the .44 Mag carbine and be able to use the same ammo.
    I know that each firearm likes different ammo, but still could work. Plus I bought a RCBS carbide die in .44 Mag/Spl and .40 SW/10 mm Auto for $25 each before Walmart discontinued them. So I could work on some sweet loads for it whenever I get one. Thanks for the awesome review and I agree with you if that was your gun bead blasting it a matte gray would be EPIC!

    Nice Review. Just pulled mine out. Was a custom build by the greatest lever gunsmith Mic MPherson 15 or 20 years ago. He has a good book on the subject. The 44 is very easy to load for and will give a wide range of uses out of the little carbine. I do use a scout scope on a quick release mount. Heavy jacketed loads with the scope and cast loads for the ghost ring. Thanks.

    I love lever action rifles, they make me happy. My first gun was a lever action Browning BL-22 my dad gave me for Christmas when I was 8-10 (can't remember exactly.) I don't like picatinny rails on lever guns, or when some companies try to make them tacticool. I like the classic clean look. I'm all for putting an optic on them, just drill and tap the reciever.

    Great gun. I bought the CST, 357 with a threaded barrel. It’s also more of a bead blast finish. I swapped the stock to put on the CSBL laminate so it looks almost identical. I run with a Silencerco Osprey 45 and it’s fantastic.

    My dad gave me a 1894 in 44 mag for Christmas 1972. In 1993 I refinished it. I can’t even guess how many white tale I have taken with it. I don’t really use it anymore . My son-in-law took a beautiful buck in NY state hardwood forest at about 60 yards. If I remember correctly it was loaded with 240gr. Hornady XTP and 21gr. H110. One shot through bough shoulders we found the built underneath the skin, perfect mushroom. We haven’t weighed yet but most of it is there.

    44 mag is actually a very common hunting caliber here in the Tennessee mountains. Allot of people really love the old ruger 44. 30/30 is also very common as well as .35 caliber levers. Great gun.

    I've got around 14 lever guns, but the only carbine I have in a 44 mag rifle is a IMI Timberwolf pump.its in great condition, but I use it regularly. It's one of my favorite all time guns. I need to take a look at this Marlin in 44 mag. Thanks for the review.

    I have the Marlin 1895SSBL .45-70, JM Original (made before Remington acquired them). Never had any screws come loose.
    When Remington took over there were many problems. Front sights were offset from the rear. Rough finish on the parts.
    Wild West Guns make some great upgrade parts for the Marlin. They can make it a Take Down model also.

    Great timing on this video! I've been looking at for a 44 mag combo. I live in Cali so if you can only have ten rounds might as well be 44 mag. Right now I'm thinking Marlin 1894 and Smith and Wesson 29. Let me know what you guys think.

      Of course. I have a 94 in 357 paired with daddy's mod 28. I have a 8 3/8th mod 29 and "need" a paired lever gun to keep it company on the trail. I'm leaning Henry just because I have the Marlin and 2 Winchesters. But I'd do another Marlin in a heart beat for the right price. I only buy used these days so the deal will decide the gun.

    Great Vid guys. The Trijicon TR24R Accupoint 1-4 using the Trijicon medium scope rings will easily clear the rear sight. Its a great option for the 30-30 too. I have one on my 336 Dark series and with Leverevolution ammo its easy to reach out to 200 metres.

    Based on your recommendation, I took the plunge & mounted a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 to my new Marlin 1894 CST. Utilizing an Ashley Performance lever action scope mount and Leopold 30mm medium height double dove rings, I got the scope so low I had to knock about 10 thou off the aftermarket hammer spur they package with the gun. Excellent fit. Eye relief puts my nose right about at the tip of the comb.

    Great video, I have the Henry x model in ,357 /38 also have a 336 from the early 60”s. It has a 3x9 red field also from the 60”s and with Hornady lever revolution ammo she shoots 2-3” groups off the bag at a hundred. Killed several Calif coastal deer throughout the years.love that old marlin. I’m currently on the fence for another lever and I’m keaning between the xmodel 44 mag or .45 colt. I mostly hand load so that said, your thoughts between the two. I have several revolvers in .45 colt and none in 44mag.

So the rail and light are just a second cool for me and maybe a HoloSun. I won’t go for the .44 just because that’s another caliber I have to buy and I already have a .357 revolver.

      You buy a 44 in Canada, when you had all the bases covered. 30/30 and 45-70. and you want to get more levers. you may even get a 410 Henry and a Henry 22 before a 44. that is my experience.
