@@colinmcgrath2392 completely unfamiliar with Scotland's firearms laws. can you own black powder firearms? if so CapnBall is a great channel.
@ I'm assuming Scotland is similar to rest of UK: the local police firearms licencing department will issue an explosives licence for black powder weapons I think. Like shotguns and firearms, you need to show good reason to have it etc.
Dana Herron yes and yes! I actually own a couple of black powder blunderbusses, but they'd cost a fortune to get up and running. They've been in my family since they were new, still got the receipt! Used to have a beautiful pair of duelling pistols, but they got stolen years ago
The .44 Magnum carbine is clearly the more powerful gun and the one I would choose if I were to have only one gun in the caliber. The advantage to the .357 Magnum carbine is that the cartridge is small enough to be paired with a revolver small enough to be practical carry gun. A .44 Magnum revolver that is both durable and controllable will be too big for most to use as a carry gun.
Old comment, but I have to agree. Especially on a budget and during an (artificially created?) ammo shortage, I like having one caliber that can fit my concealed carry, survival gun and hunting rifle - the option of substituting .38 is even more useful in this situation. So, for me, it's .357 (snubby, revolver, repeating rifle). All I have and (hopefully) all I'll ever need. Also, Paul Harrell is awesome!
There’s a reason I haven’t ever bought a holster for my Dan Wesson 744 with a full lug 8” barrel. It’s big fun to shoot and built like a tank. It also weighs almost as much as a tank 😜
Another "advantage" to the .357 carbien is the ability to run .38 specials for small game. My Rossi home dfense lever trapper version is loaded with 10 .38 specials so I don't blow my ears off if I have to fire indoors. I think 10 .38s will do the job. This same gun can become my camping gun by filling it with "bear loads" .357 mag 180g from HSM. Very satisfied with this flexibility.
You can use both for carry with the right shoulder holster. Particularly a vertical shoulder holster. Both come in 3" barrels too. You will need to use a jacket though. Maybe not the best for really hot weather. Unless you are wearing seersucker clothing.
Hardly anyone is carrying .357 revolvers for personal protection these days. 44 is definitely the way to go if you were to only have one lever caliber if using for hunting, SHTF scenarios or personal defense. If just using for fun plinking then .357 for it’s cheap ability in using .38 specials.
I just found these videos today, I'm very impressed. I'm a USMC combat veteran and your way of providing information is very reminiscent to the classes we used to get. I’ve only recently started watching this channel, and honestly I have no idea why I hadn’t been watching it more before now. I’ve been binge watching the heck out of it for the last couple of weeks, and it seems like it’s gained around 20k new subscribers in that time so obviously I’m not the only one that has done that. I’ve watched various other gun channels over the last 6 or so years (most of which I’ve quit watching) and this is by far the most informative while simultaneously entertaining channel I’ve seen yet. I might be late to the party, but I’m catching up. Thanks
Not to be a hipster, if those even exist anymore, but I really have been watching Paul Harrell since he's only had 50k subscribers. It feels so good to see Paul get the attention and respect he deserves. Hardest working guy in the TH-cam gun community.
Every Paul Harrell presentation: "Please bear with gun fire in the back" - Check! "But there are a few caveats with that." - Check! "Not bad at all" - Check!
I knew what the outcome of this test was going to be before I even clicked to view this video. Yet I watched it anyways because Paul Harrell is our super cool dad, uncle or grandpa figure that has all the cool endless information and stories . Keep it up Paul love you and what you do!
A Paul Harrell video could never be to long. He could record himself every second he is on a range and do 3 hour long lectures and I would view it all. His abilities speak for themselves. With all the training he has received, given and all the knowledge other people have poured into him on top of all his practical experience this man has risen to the very top of the expert rank! I have just one thing to say to Paul. Shoot when you want to explain everything you want to talk when you want to you have my strict attention!
Yea, I'll tell him that was an old trick with the tree. My dad used to do it with an ear of corn when I was little..He'd leave one full row on the cobb and act like he accidentally missed it.
This guy reads my mind. Every day I think "would x b better than y?" and boom Paul has a video. Great stuff, sir. Most helpful and informative and there is no "fat" in his videos.
I was quite impressed by Paul's shot placement for the chronograph... he cut down a tree and continued to put rounds into the stump... a small tree at that ...
Ignore the hate mail Paul. I love the comparison videos and want BOTH the realistic and fair. If forced to choose I would much rather see comparisons with bullet weights common to the caliber like 125 and 240 as examples for the 357 and 44. Then the cherry on top would be the “fair” compared. Thanks for all you do, I have learned a ton from you and enjoyed the learning. And again, if someone has constructive feedback that’s fine, but IGNORE THE HATERS CAUSE A HATERS JUST GONNA HATE! 😂
I’m so glad I found this channel. I’m not even really into carbines, I just love this dudes “long and tedious” presentation, his clear experience, and how he addresses his followers and critics. Keep it up Paul! You had me reeled in with the pandemic gun buying videos
@ungratefulmetalpansy it' what you gotta do my friend. Think of it like your driving test; you get it over with and so long as you keep your license renewed, will never have to do it again. Also if you think the course is expensive, wait till you start actually buying guns and ammo LOL
As a man, maybe a little older than you (Paul Harrell) with many decades of teaching I can understand that it's impossible to please everyone. Nonetheless, it grieves me that you have to put up so much "hate mail." I suppose it's inevitable. Still, I am sorry for you. It's really a shame people can't simply see just how knowledgeable you are and what a great service you provide for anyone who wants to learn about guns and ALL things related! You're the man! Keep the videos coming, Paul!
My father was a paratrooper in WWII, he told me stories of at the end when the Germans were surrendering, they would put the guns in a pile as they walked by. Dad said after things settled that people would grab the guns and shoot one after another at a tree until it went down, so you CAN take a tree down with guns.
Yeah, I got a good laugh out of that. Back in 1991, I bought a new Marlin 1895 SS 45-70. I picked up a box of Winchester factory ammo 300 grain hollow point to test it out. I put a target on a pine tree my father had knocked down on his property only a week or so before, a foot or better in diameter. I put 10 rounds thru that target at 25 yards. When I took the target down, those 10 rounds had chewed halfway thru the trunk. After that, I told my father "If you can't stop something with 5 rounds from this gun, you better call in an airstrike".
@@mitchelloates9406 wow, you better need to know what's not only behind someone when shooting that, but what's behind What's behind that someone to shoot behind (kinda like deagle owners say they can fire someone hiding on a fridge on their neighbor's house)

I think I've said this. Caleb is a talented shooter, and a fucking idiot. It is too bad he came after Paul for no reason. I guess he was aiming for his foot, 50/50 all six rounds bullseye, in less than 14 minutes. That's impressive considering the pain involved.
I bought my 10 year old daughter a Henry 357 lever gun for deer hunting- she loves it. This video helped me decide on it being adequate for whitetail. It shoots very impressive groups with 158 grain factory loads. - thank you sir for your very informative videos. - God Bless-
@@johnwhoissavedbygrace9975 it's plenty for deer. I used to use an m1 carbine for deer, and that would be comparable. Of course we're not talking about shots over 200 yards, but how often do you do that? Almost never, especially where it's hilly. Don't listen to all the yahoos out there that say stuff like "shoot, son you need some type of belted magnum bare minimum for whitetail, anything less is just wounding the animal "
I am convinced I need a .357 lever gun now. My Favorite caliber to shoot is .38 and .357. A lever gun would make a perfect compliment to my collection.
Go for it, Tron. I just joined the pistol-caliber, lever-action frenzy with a Marlin 1894c .357 purchased a couple months ago. It is fun to shoot! You'll love it.
Don't ever let anyone tell you these videos are tedious. All the extreme level of detail is why I subscribe in the first place. The explanations on this channel are always clear, precise and accurate and they don't leave a ton of information out like nearly every other channel. There's a lot of fun shooting channels that are just about watching stuff blow up and seeing ridiculous guns, but almost none that cover information so in depth like this one.
If this was my dad's childhood, he's be clearing stuff with dynamite he bought from the local hardware. So what's happened? Either the population has become more dumb and dangerous over time, or the DEEP STATE has MADE people more dumb and dangerous, as well as dependent over time. You be the judge.
@@exothermal.sprocket You are absolutely right. I was blasting stumps as a child of 8 with dynamite from the local hardware store. Which I would walk in and buy without even having my dad with me. Now I can't even buy it. Firearms take a background check, even ammo in some places does. I still have a rifle bought from Sears through their mail order catalog, that was mailed to my family's door. Yet you hear about many times more murderers and the like. It is that the very idea of being responsible for your own actions has been removed from the general public over time. Just look at parents today and TV programming. Parent of the past would teach their children what they could and could not watch. And the children knew if they violated it, they would get a spanking at the very least. Modern parents are just the opposite. How many time have you heard a parent say "I don't think that should be on TV, because I don't want my child to see it"? If you don't want your family to see it turn it off, watch what your children see and act accordingly. Do not expect everyone else to filter what they can watch because you are too lazy to watch you own child. This is just a small example of how self absorbed and lazy people have gotten. How they expect everyone else to do their job for them. It's truly sickening.

“This meat target wasn’t wearing a t-shirt; animals rarely do.” 🤣😂. Well, usually just one animal.
As seen on an old "Top Gear" T-shirt label: These t-shirts were tested on animals; they didn't fit.

I just found these videos today, I'm very impressed. I'm a USMC combat veteran and your way of providing information is very reminiscent to the classes we used to get. Your videos all seem well planned out ahead of time, your manner of speaking is no nonsense straight to the point, you also let your experience speak for itself when you need to. I find these videos pretty therapeutic, surprisingly. Keep up the great work I look forward to your videos in the future. +1 Sub, and for you I'm actually hitting the bell icon haha.
Thank you for your service! 🇺🇲
Uncle Paul is treasure and I trust his tests and personal evaluations over anyone else.
Semper Fidelis!
Thank you for your service sir!
I believe Paul is a former USMC pistol instructor. It’s possible your classes were reminiscent of Paul’s videos because Paul may have written your curriculum.
The difference in energy foot pounds is painfully obvious when shooting the “meat target”... Thanks Paul!
You could tell pistols are just playing around . Rifles are where it’s at .
I have a number of carbines and enjoy their accuracy and power. My pistols are task specific, depending on the circumstance of necessity.

Thanks

Welcome to the family sir!!

Not to be a hipster, if those even exist anymore, but I really have been watching Paul Harrell since he's only had 50k subscribers. It feels so good to see Paul get the attention and respect he deserves. Hardest working guy in the TH-cam gun community.
Also, welcome to the club!
Every Paul Harrell presentation:
"Please bear with gun fire in the back" - Check!
"But there are a few caveats with that." - Check!
"Not bad at all" - Check!
Don't forget "the Shatner-esque speech impediment" and "you be the judge"
“That’s a lot more.”
"The Paul Harrell drinking game"
I read this simultaneously as he said it in the video.
Don't forget his most famous saying, "...and as always, don't try this at home, I'm what you call a professional, and thanks for watching...".

Keep it up Paul love you and what you do!
Same. Knew it, watched anyway.
Paul, not once have I thought any of your presentations were "too long" or "tedious". That said, I vote for realistic comparisons.
With all the usual caveats, what-ifs and yeah-buts. None of us would want it any other way. =)
Well said. I’m with you on all counts.
True dat. Real life isnt fair.
I'm going to start sending Paul hate mail so we get to sit through longer and more tedious chronograph tests.
Yea, I'll tell him that was an old trick with the tree. My dad used to do it with an ear of corn when I was little..He'd leave one full row on the cobb and act like he accidentally missed it.
Brave soul!

Wow, I missed that. Was wondering what the heck he meant by “timber” 🤦🏼♂️
Immediately dropped every else. Heck with school. Mr Harrell is on!

Waking up to a Paul Harrell video; now this is life!
The only hatemail I could ever come up with, would be "why aren't your presentations twice as long?" :-D
Ignore the haters man, this is a quality program.

He loves us so much, he's willing to stand out in the rain and make these videos
No One: You cant chop down a tree with a gun
Paul: Hold my chronograph
Timber.
My father was a paratrooper in WWII, he told me stories of at the end when the Germans were surrendering, they would put the guns in a pile as they walked by. Dad said after things settled that people would grab the guns and shoot one after another at a tree until it went down, so you CAN take a tree down with guns.
Just really wanted to make sure that tree stayed down lol

I bought my 10 year old daughter a Henry 357 lever gun for deer hunting- she loves it. This video helped me decide on it being adequate for whitetail. It shoots very impressive groups with 158 grain factory loads. - thank you sir for your very informative videos. - God Bless-
I’d have liked to see the Speer Gold Dot 158 Gr on the meat target - I remember that as a really good shooting load from my magnum revolver days.
Hey boss. I’m debating buying a .357 for whitetail hunting here in PA for my kids as well. How did the .357 fare against deer for you, success?
@@johnwhoissavedbygrace9975 not op but just use softpoints youll have the penetration you want 158 gr is plenty with the proper shot placement
@@johnwhoissavedbygrace9975 it's plenty for deer. I used to use an m1 carbine for deer, and that would be comparable.

Almost as fun as clearing trees with C4. 😉
@@michaelblacktree Yes, but not as fast as with C4. I still prefer the instant forest remover the military knows as a claymore.
If this was my dad's childhood, he's be clearing stuff with dynamite he bought from the local hardware. So what's happened? Either the population has become more dumb and dangerous over time, or the DEEP STATE has MADE people more dumb and dangerous, as well as dependent over time. You be the judge.
The 357 weakened the tree first.
