    I had a situation recently that i loved, i work at a old folks rehab center and i unfortunately have to give out plastic straws. A new resident named Beverly sat down for dinner and said "No straw! Im on a crusade, I saw a segment on the news about the plastic in the ocean and thought i would start doing my part." It was so heartwarming, I almost thought it was a lost cause to persuade the older generation to learn!

      I had no idea that receipts (like the one from your milkman ) are not supposed to go in with the recycling. Ive learnt something new, thanks.

    My Gran and I did Plastic Free July together. We have gotten rid of a lot of plastic habits and replaced them with alternatives. It’s been great to have her on board with making the changes.

    I’m trying to go plastic free but it seems I go through products so slowly and I don’t want to throw away a good product because it’s in plastic till I’m done with it!! Ik you have some a video like this before but could you do an updated starter kit. Like the things we buy the most that are plastic that should be our first switches? Love your videos and you you’re such a bright ray of sunshine and inspiration!!❤️

      Hey, Me! Welcome to the zero waster life! Most of us would agree that if a plastic item we own can still be useful, it's much more sustainable to keep the item until it can't be used (Like Jessica said :) ) The reason for this is that the zero waste life style is much more concerned with creating a circular economy--buying less, using stuff until it's no longer useable, and trying to find a better way to dispose of it than the trash can. Food scraps can grow new food through compost, etc. With plastic items, they last a long time, and it definitely takes a while to get through it all. :) Trust me, we've all been there. This is your life's way of helping you ease into a new, slower lifestyle. Do your best to enjoy the process, and think creatively about how you can use what you have over buying a new item. Easy swaps are reusable bags, bring your own coffee cups, and bringing your own cutlery when you eat out. Hope this helps! :D

    Love this video Kate, I found plastic free July really tough, but it highlighted a lot of the plastic that I am struggling to cut out. I can't find yogurt or raspberries without plastic anywhere, and I don't want to live in a world without raspberries dang it!!
    I really appreciate people like you with a big audience showing us that you're not perfect with plastic free july, it certainly helps remind me that it is a process rather than an absolute rule.

    I just got around to watching your "how I tackle plastic free July" and thought I would mention that the disc of plastic in the metal cap can be removed. It doesn't negate the fact that it's there to begin with, but then you could recycle the cap. I really enjoy your videos.

    I managed to make a couple of changes. Weve changed over to using reuseable nappies for my 14 month old baby girl. Weve also started getting our veg delivered from a local farm each friday. It comes in a cardboard box which you return to the company they then reuse it. Next on my.list ks a compost bin but they seem to e so damn expensive. X

    Hi Kate, I‘m an audiologist from Germany and here you can get custom made ear plugs made from medical silicone. They don‘t last forever, but are way less wasteful and more hygenic than the foam ones. I don‘t now how things are done in England but in Germany you go to your local hearing aid acoustician and they will make them for you. The process still does involve plastic in some way or another. But I am sure you will help them find a better solution for your husband.
    Lots of love Kt

    1. I thought that cellophane enveloppe windows were biodegradable.
    2. If you want to make sure your receipt is thermal paper just take something hard like a key and rub it really quickly on it. It will generate heat and leave a dark mark.

    Didn't know Plastic Free July was a thing until now. But was listening to some zero waste podcasts then, and was on vacation at the beach for a week and always clean up as much trash as I can. Seems to be several bits of ribbon from balloons:(
    Would love a seaweed foraging class. Picked a few bits of sea lettuce and sea pickles while at the beach but need to learn more.

    Tip for ear plugs: I use silicone ear plugs that came in a pack of 6 or so pairs, I wear a fresh pair every night, then wash/sanitize in hot soapy water each weekend and let air dry, so I have a new pair for every day without sending any into landfill. I have been using the same ones for over a year and a half and they still look and function like they are brand new, and it is more sanitary than re-using the foam ones that can absorb wax and bacteria.

    I wouldn't stress too much about the bottle caps. If you read the metal chapter in TerraCycle's Guide to Zero Waste Family, they explain that they are still recyclable b/c the plastic just melts off the metal in the resmelting process and doesn't contaminate the newly recycled metal. While it does suck that there is plastic there at all, you are still able to send the metal back through the recycling stream, and reducing the need for mining virgin ore for new metal items.

    • @LadyOfRain1
      @LadyOfRain1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh! And about your husband needing earplugs to sleep, there's a really cool sleeping cap invention that is available now. I was looking @ it b/c sometimes I have trouble sleeping b/c of the light from a street light outside our window (when the weather's nice we leave the windows open overnight). It fits over your ears and eyes @ the same time and I believe it's silk. It is being marketed to people with insomnia and migraine sufferers to block all sensory disturbances.

    I’m not sure about the UK but in Sweden we can’t recycle envelopes at all due to the glue. It’s apparently the same kind of glue on post-its I think. Also in Sweden it’s the law that every time you buy something the person selling it to you have to write a receipt. It is indeed annoying with all this paper but it is encouraging that more shops are emailing them instead :)

    I'm just starting on reducing my waste (plastic and otherwise!) and I've found your videos really helpful! Luckily we have a great independent supermarket in Brighton where I can buy pasta, dried fruits etc. in bulk and I just refilled a washing up liquid bottle for the first time. I've always wondered about recycling receipts but I have noticed more places are asking if you want a receipt, and particularly self-service checkouts sometimes ask if you want a receipt or not.

    Any chance I can buy frozen food in bulk? Especially berries? I do buy the ones from Asda but it's only 350g and it comes in a plastic container which is so annoying. Please let me know if you know any places in London where they sell loose frozen fruit :)

      Carrie We have the same problem in Germany. I‘m going to buy fresh berries when they‘re in season and freeze them by myself. So hopefully I can reduce the amount of bought frozen berries by 50% - that is my goal for 2019. My freezer is quite small, so 50% will be a good start.

    They’re called orifice reducers (from the EO bottles). As an Aromatherapy student, May I please suggest not to ingest essential oils. Even the purest oils (that claim they’re safe for ingestion) can destroy mucous membranes and can build up in your liver. Robert Tisserand, a world renowned aromatherapist even says do not invest unless under the very careful of an aromatherapist who it trained in ingestion.
    Natural does not automatically equal safe.

    Why is it that bulk beans that I could technically get without plastic are more expensive than plastic bag packed beans? Sure I could get the 50# bags myself they usually use to fill the bulk bins, but I don't have enough containers to store that so bugs can't get at it.
    I don't want to pay more to use less packaging or to offset the cost of running one of the small bulk style stores. Capitalism reins supreme.
    Holy crap those avocados are expensive! The normal smaller size Hass variety go as low as $0.25 us. Most often I get them for $0.50 or less each. I'm in Texas, so maybe that's the reason.

    • @veronikat6996
      @veronikat6996 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't think of anywhere right next to England that grows avocados so you have to pay a bit more for the transport cost. You live right next to Mexico though so cheaper avacados. One of the best things people can do for the environment is not buy fruits and veggies that were grown half way across the world though.

      Flavia Does London all they need to do is find sympathetic rich people that still needs to offset their taxes with charitable deductions(at least in the US). Constantly extracting value from the the middle and lower classes continues to hurt the average person.
