A bunch of REALLY RANDOM things I've quit buying. I'm definitely not a minimalist but I've certainly stopped purchasing a lot of things I used to think I needed since going zero waste. Enjoy!

For people uncomfortable with using menstrual cups, cloth pads are a great option! You can find them on etsy, and there are tons of reviews on youtube so you can pick what's right for you. I love pads from Novel Red, and Mimi's Dream, and I've got my eye on some from Ecofemme.

This video is great! I gave up plastic baggies about a year ago and replaced them with beeswrap, mason jars, and glass storage containers. When I had family over for Thanksgiving they were trying to store the left overs...I've never been asked "Where are your plastic baggies?" more in my life. It dawned on me how automatic, items like this are in our society. They couldn't understand how I stored food without baggies.

Water-maticly 😂 so good. It's crazy to think about all of the products that are marketed to us as "essentials" when really, we need none of them. Loved this video, Kate!

Antibacterial soap also contributes to "Super Bugs", which is why it's generally recommended to use regular soap and to not use too much hand sanitizer. Hospitals are trying to lessen their use of heavy antibacterial soaps and the like, since reducing their use lessens the likelihood of MRSA outbreaks and other similar problems.

About to not buying magazines: I only really used to buy one (here in the UK), but stopped doing that when I found out I can not only read it at my local library, but they also have an app where I can read it for free! So now I read that magazine every month on my phone. So if there's a magazine you want to read but not have lying around/arriving in your house with plastic, it's worth checking out if that's an option :)

I use a crystal deodorant, and it works great. It doesn't stop you from sweating, but it stops the bacteria that cause body odour from growing on your skin. I've been using a crystal deodorant for 22 years, and I've never had any odour problems.

Speaking of random... I randomly stumbled upon your channel and I am loving it. So many good tips. I am trying to be more conscious about what I buy. I only just started so I am not saying I'll go zero waste just yet. But I will try to seriously diminish my amount of waste, mainly plastic.
I have already using only organic cosmetics for years but I now will also try to avoid plastic packaging as much as possible. I might stick with some things, because I am sensitive to a lot of shampoo and some products break me out. Finding things that work is already a challenge, when it has to be organic an not cause any problems. But I will definitely try to find some that have eco friendly or more sustainable packaging.

Thanks for your video Kate. Very helpful since I was looking for what was on the market for food wrapping.
Also, as a professional cleaner really happy to hear that you (and your cleaner) also make use lemon, bicarbonate of soda and essential oil (tea tree or grapefruit extract for mould is the best) for natural cleaning options. I also use the Dr. Bronners Castile soap for general surface cleaning, it comes various bottle sizes and it goes a loong way. 😊

I so agree about the menstrual cup, it is an amazing thing that I can't imagine living without now! I've used several menstrual cups but by far my favorite is the Lunette.
I've also mostly stopped buying tea bags, but still do occasionally if the type of tea I want isn't available in loose leaf. I didn't know they contain plastic, though, so thanks for the heads-up on that. I'll keep that in mind and reduce my tea bag consumption even more. Thanks for a great and thought-provoking video!

Do you add your citrus peels/vinegar mixture to the wash, or in the dryer? I don't use anything right now, and just sort of deal with the static... it's a nice little sparkle show for my kids - go in a dark room, toss fresh-from-dryer laundry around, and watch the sparkles come alive! :)

I once had MRSA and was only allowed to use an antibacterial wash for my daily soaps (other than shampoo) so there are circumstances that you may want to listen to the advice of your medical provider if you have an extreme circumstance like I did. I do know after tattoos I was also instructed to use an antibacterial soap gently once a day because some ingredients interact with the healing process and ink. Just be aware of your circumstances!

    • @magspies

    • @evrydae
      @evrydae 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, after tattoo care has a bit more leeway! The "washing" I tend to do on a fresh tattoo is usually so gentle anyways so Dr. Bronner's is a great mild cleanser for the job.

I am afraid to say that there is no such thing as biodegradable plastic, it just breaks into smaller pieces quicker meaning more micro plastic. I understand that it seemed like the answer but scientists in Australia have said it is not an environmentally friendly option. Sorry

For deodorant, especially during summer, I like to rub a fresh slice of lemon on my armpits. This has worked amazingly for me. Word of warning for anyone who wants to try it, it can sting a bit when applying after shaving. Also, I've read that it can lighten the skin when used over a long period of time which is one of the reasons why I mainly use it in the summer.

Lemon juice makes a fantastic deodorant. Take it from the girl who had to carry deodorant in her purse every where I went. Just rub 1/4 tsp of fresh lemon juice on each armpit and allow to dry. I don't use it every day. You can use it every 3 days or two in summer.

My doctor recommended I take a drug that is now "over the counter." It comes in a BIG cardboard and plastic package in which there are three plastic bottles. The first thing I do when I bring it home is condense the three bottles down into one. How do I complain to the company about all the unnecessary packing? Thanks!

Sara Ream Write or email. There is a new Facebook group for this sort of action m.facebook.com/groups/1112322558894084
The lady who started it wants to target certain companies and get a lot of people to contact them at once. I am waiting to be accepted as it's a closed group, so I can't say exactly how it is organised , but it might be worth a look and suggesting the company you mentioned. Good luck!

I simply can’t watch this video because of the annoyingly bad audio. I am interested in what the video is about but there’s this background noise and the music that create this awful sound

Biodegradable material ultimately has to replace plastic. That is a real step forward. Don't mean to be rude or anything, but some of the things you're talking about seems like nothing more feel good wishy washy activities. But you're a good man.
