    Thanks for the update, Kate! I've been making my own almond milk and recently made citrus cleaner. I line my bins with bread bags or newspaper. Next on the list is homemade deodorant and beeswax wraps. I also hope to try out shampoo bars after my current shampoo runs out.

    I love your channel, you have really inspired me to pursue an eco friendly/plastic free lifestyle. Quick question: how do you close up and get rid of your eco sacks?

    Thanks for the video, very informative - I'm definitely going to try the ecosacks :) Have you tried the ecoegg for your laundry? We have used it for years and wouldn't go back to detergent - except for the very, very occasional hot wash (ecoegg can only be used up to 60 degrees) I can definitely recommend it :)

    I wish you would do a kitchen tour. I also have a small kitchen and would like to see how you keep things tidy. Sort things and such in a zero waste way.

    Have you thought about growing Soapwort? It's such a lovely delicate looking flower and the plant can be used to make a soap (cleaning, washing dishes, etc)! You could grow it with the other flowers in your big tub with the lavender (the bees would like it) and be beautiful and functional! Watch the Wartime Farm series and see how Ruth Goodman used it to wash her hair! OH! And you mention how you love to stay in Cornwall a LOT! We were there last year as part of our Holiday and stayed in WestPark Shepherd's Hut near Bude, it was GORGEOUS (beautiful views of the farmers fields with horses playing in them, windmills in the distance, you can see the ocean off over the horizon, super quiet private country lane)! I think you would really enjoy it. They have a website and a TH-cam channel.

    Hi, I'm new to your channel and trying to slowly go plastic free, so many things I hadn't ever thought of so thanks for the tips. Got to ask though, how do you only wash your hair every few days? I have the same cut and always end up with bed head if I don't wash it everyday? :/ !

    I don't know about Bio-D refills I'm afraid but maybe you can check out Splosh. It's an online company based in Herefordshire, they do refills for their products in concentrated pouches, which you decant and dilute. You send the pouches back to them for them to reuse and eventually recycle.

    Hi Kate,
    I have read some accounts of people using a regular-non-moisturizing bar of soap instead of washing up liquid- or as we say in the U.S. dish soap.
    So, way back before our day and before dish soap, everyone used a bar of soap to wash dishes and pretty much anything that needed cleaning.
    I first came to this idea watching an I Love Lucy episode. There was a sort of hand mop they used to gather some suds and then wash a few dishes. It makes sense, I think I'll try it as my zero waste alternative as soon as I'm out of liquid. I thought maybe you might be interested too. Good luck!

    • @Coccinelf
      @Coccinelf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's true. Most people don't need a separate shampoo bar and can wash their hair with normal soap. Personally, we use hand soap for washing the dishes but we are the same as Kate and we own a dishwasher, so we rarely use it.

    I love your channel. It has inspired me to be more conscious of the packaging when I purchase things. Not just what is in the product. I stumbled upon a brand in the USA that has really good ingredients and the packaging is great too! Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve. They are based in Ohio.

    If your dishwashing detergent is made with washing soda and/or baking soda, you can try pouring white vinegar into the rinsing agent compartment. I had the same filmy residue problem, and the vinegar rinse fixed it :) I make my own dishwashing detergent using 4 cups washing soda, 1 cup citric acid, and 1 cup sea salt

    • @eye-lash

    I found mixing dishwashing powder with my homemade powder worked beautifully. Not zero waste, but at least reducing. I used about 1/5 commercial dishwashing powder with 4/5 of the stuff I made and my dishes actually got clean. Without the commercial product I ended up rewashing a lot of my dishes and wasting a lot of water to save a little waste. And many dishwashing powders are sold in cardboard boxes (at least in the US) like most of the ingredients for my homemade stuff.

  • @Coccinelf

    I'm pretty sure you already got this in the comments but I think your woes with the homemade dishwasher detergent are all because you have hard water. We also have hard water and we have the exact same problem. I tried to look for non-toxic eco-friendly rinse because I fear that vinegar might end up ruining our dishwasher but their is not much out there. There is one by Ecover but I'm still on the fence. Good luck!
    Also, I will add this here, seeing as I can't comment on your blog, but are you aware that sometimes the packaging we think is plastic is cellophane? I know the process for making it is polluting but I'm pretty sure most plastic is too and it has the advantage of being 100% biodegradable contrary to any plastic.

    Faith in Nature do good dishwasher gel... not plastic free but after a few trails of natural gels etc it works at least. it comes in a Huge £35 bottle from big green smile online... who at least don't use plastic to send things 🎉 It lasts ages... if I could refill that too that would be lovely! About to try some shampoo soap after you mentioning it recently... it came wrapped in plastic though! 😣 😄 xxx

      Hannah Provence I'm dealing with the same thing.. I'm a student living in a home with 3 other people and our family of four produces a lot of trash and consumes ALOT of plastic. A couple of days ago (at the start of the year) I decided to share with them this lifestyle and suggested that we change some of our habits.. a couple days later we are not perfect and I've definitely had the urge to live alone a couple times BUT I think people are more aware of packaging and plastic when they're shopping and that's a start. I suggest showing them a couple zero waste videos and some impactful environment documentaries and work with them to change some of their habits. What made us/you passionate for this cause could end up evoking the same passion in our families. P.S. ECOBOOST I'd love to hear your thoughts/tips on how to go about living zero waste while still in school or living with others that don't share your values.

    I have another, I think basic question... Cause I have to drink a lot of water, so far, unfortunately I am buying in a plastic bottle. (Tap water is undrinkable). Does anybody has any suggestions how to solve this problem? Bring everyday water in a glass bottle? or any other way?

      You don't know, where he/she lives. In Africa f. e. I wouldn't drink tap water as well. Althought you're right for europe. Bought water even destroys the nature.

      I don't know if you just live here or if you are czech. I have never had any problem with tap watter anywhere in czech republic. It tastes like normal water. I don't drink anything else. Everywhere in czech.rep. If you don't like it make tea or add something- lemon, mint.. but i really don't get this.

    don t you think that buying wooden stuff means cutting more trees and since we re a huge population that has been trained thanks to our society to buy more than enough, I m worried that it will cause lot of forests to disappear. I am not sure about going no waste since I will have to use wooden stuff yet i do believe recycling and being minimalist is great. I sum up with Gandhi quote I m not sure how it s written but the earth has enough for humain needs but not for humain greed.

    • @bt464
      @bt464 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you'll notice, Ms. Arnell usually buys bamboo-which is renewable, if you are referring to the bin liners- they are made of the leftover shavings of already harvested wood that would otherwise go to waste which is part of the point of zero waste living. Gleaning and reusing 'waste' left by already used logs is brilliant. No one is going to stop cutting down trees altogether, using up every last bit of every tree cut-well that's just considerate, responsible and smart.

      There are lumber and paper companies that plant and replant so they always have a supply of wood. Of course not every company is run sustainably, so it really depends on the source of the wood.

    Hi :) Lovely video, great tipps. I'm very excited to become a zero waster and you are very motivating. I just wanted to ask whether you might consider going vegan. I went vegan a while ago and the environmental destruction put forth by the meat and dairy industries played a huge part in my decision. You can do more than avoinding waste. By going vegan, you can save the most amount of green house gas emissions, freshwater, forested land and food resources. Also you don't have to be scared, its a wonderful experience (at least it was for me) and my diet is now less restrictive and more varied than it was before ;)

    • @kate.arnell
      @kate.arnell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Vici233 I was vegetarian for 13 years and got really ill and I have met several others recently who after a long time of no meat, got sick. It's a slow process... I feel more connected to the Eco system eating biodiverse, organically reared and sometimes wild meat which I know how it is raised, cared for and slaughtered and believe my body was designed to do so. Re climate, more research into organic farming's impact needs to be done but we know healthy organic animals = healthy soil which = a large store of carbon and healthy veggies for us all... Vegans and meat eaters. In my opinion everyone going vegan isn't the answer but if you have an issue with eating animals then that's up to you!

      ECO BOOST thank you for commenting on this. I have been veggie for 15 years and am considering carefully introducing some meat into my diet. I am trying to research how I can do this in a way that makes the smallest impact possible environmentally and also to animal welfare. Maybe you'd consider doing a video on it?
