@@Gargi22111 You can also use stainless steel thermos or if you want to use a cup, there are ceramic cups albeit I would stop using it once they start to show tiny-tiny cracks or scratches because that will leach out the lead that's often in the glaze (lead leaches especially well into acids like coffee or juice). That's not a problem if you manage to find a lead-free ceramic coup, of course. I don't know about the lids, they might still leach bpa, bps, phthalates but it's probably less than having the whole cup leaching (the lid won't be in constant contact with the liquid if the cup/thermos is an up straight position and the surface area will be much smaller too).

When I was a kid, we always had our iced tea in a glass pitcher. I remember when one day it broke. I asked my Mom why didn't we just get a plastic one. She told me that my dad would not drink from a plastic tea pitcher because he could "taste" the plastic. That was in the 60's. Now I understand. The Tupperware lady is gonna be unhappy about this!

All of our mothers either sold TW, or went to the trendy Tupperware distributors’ parties, where they bought many of the plastic bowls/containers with lids. The sales representatives that sold Tupperware were called, “Tupperware ladies”.

I wonder if you know this ;) I am a medical lab technologist and work in a toxicology lab. When we run urine drug screens on GCMS, besides finding all the illegal drugs and medications, in around 25-50% of the urine samples we find PHTHALATES!! Isn't that crazy (and proof) that you are ingesting plastic. And if it's in your urine that means it went through your blood, liver, heart, brain, and kidneys before it got to your urine.
There are likely other plastic molecules that we aren't able to extract with our method but because of that I keep my food away from plastic always.
Not food related but we also find DEET in urine so you might want to spray that on your clothes instead of your skin.

Thank you. I am 66 and never paid much attention to the dangers of plastic. I did stop heating up leftovers in plastic years ago simply because it stained the plastic. I feel the everything else you have told us is true, so I am going to switch from my giant water/tea glass to a smaller actual glass container. Every little bit helps when you are trying to get healthy. I appreciate all that you do and hope you continue your crusade to make us healthier.
When I was in college I came across evidence in studies that aluminum can be a promoter of Alzheimer's. I have a theory that people who use a lot of antiperspirant or put too much on regularly and/or cook and use a lot of aluminum foil over their lifetime may be more prone to it.
When I was in College I took a Materials engineering class, the class had a new mass spectrometer, for hell of it I put a gallon plastic container of milk in the sun for 20 minutes, then ran a sample through the mass spectrometer, it was loaded with plastic molecules.

Holy cow! This makes sense and I’ve had tons of female problems and had to get a full hysterectomy in my early 30’s. As a nurse, I’ve drank tons of coffee in plastic and styrofoam cups. I’ve done many of these things. I thought getting BPA free was good enough 🤦🏻♀️

You really do need to eliminate anything similar. Just because there isn't research there doesn't mean it's safe.

nope they just replaced BPA with BPS, just like PTFE With PFAS, which is catching on but it will continue with analogues. Should think in production and composition. I am slowly but surely switching over to glass food storage. It takes time on a fixed budget to change everything to nontoxic stuff, but I'll get there. 😊

30ish years ago, I overheard a teacher in elementary school complaining about plastics and how she hates how so much food comes in plastic. It went over my head then but I never forgot it

There alternative toothbrushes. Many are made in China, so word of caution on pollution level in bamboo. There is a website called life without plastic.

Last year in Mumbai (India) the govt banned ALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS for restaurant takeout & delivery. Waiting for that to happen all over India.

Another sad element is if you ever go to the hospital due to illness, the IV catheter, tubing, and bags of fluid all contain phthalates.

Makes sense. If that plastic bottle from your car is not safe because it has been heated up, then why could you drink bottled water at all since you know that it sat for months in some steaming hot warehouse before hitting the grocery shelves!!!
I work for a wholesale distributor. We leave truckloads of bottled water sitting in the sun in our lot for sometimes weeks at a time. Temperatures in the trailer will reach from 100 to 150 degrees.

Love your informative videos. I have been getting away from plastics. An Odd thing happened . Two days ago, my sister had brought me a serving of chicken and dumplings that she had made. She brought it in a SANDWICH BAGGY and I put it in the fridge to eat the next day. So next day I pour it out of the baggy into a glass bowl and heated it in the microwave. It had a DETERGENT TASTE TO IT AND WAS NOT edible. I asked my sister if it had been warm when she first put it into the baggy and she said yes. REALLY WEIRD!

This did freak me out. -Not a little bit, but a lot of bit. Thank you for giving all the examples too. The coffee cup, the cutting board. Facepalm. Our butter is in a plastic container for cryin out loud. I have grass-fed butter (yay me) in a plastic container (and wait for it...I sometimes soften it in the microwave. Gaaah!) Ok - well better late than never. I too bought the BPA-free means it's safe. I'm starting to realize government approved or recommended means "be sure to do extra research before using this". the idea that bpa free makes it safe is the same ideology behind gluten free junk food, sugar free, etc
theres always something more sinister behind it if we just stop to think. like in the example of gluten free cookies, if you are overweight or celiac then why are you eating cookies at all? if you are diabetic why are you drinking soda at all? diet soda is no excuses.

I went plastic free 2 years ago. I did not realize how insidious it was until I started cleaning out everything. In every house I lived in, I had a plastic cupboard. It was awful. Now, have stoneware (food safe), wood (food safe), bamboo (if from China, watch out too much pollution), glass, steel, cast iron. There are places to buy almost anything not plastic. Even tooth brushes.
Make sure your cast irons don't have non-stick coatings. Those coatings are bad as well.
Titanium is best ,followed by good quality uncoated stainless steel
Hey Dr. Berry! Love your videos! Very interesting and educational! I've been a veterinary technician for over 30 years and became very suspicious of using plastic years ago when it was linked to cats with "chin acne" ! It sounds crazy but I've known more than a few cats, including my parents cat who suffered for years with it, that have been cured just by eliminating plastic bowls for feeding and water. Made me wonder, if it does that to a cat who is only using it a few times a day, what is it doing to us humans who use it with virtually everything! It's easy and inexpensive to just use glass, ceramic or stainless for ourselves and our pets. Thank you for your time and being a doctor who actually cares!
I used to have two cats who were from the same litter. One liked to lick plastic, the other did not. The plastic licker was overweight and died at the age of 8. The other was fit and lived to 22 until he died in an accident.

Oh boy, all my plastic food storage containers. I saw some glass containers but, they still had plastic covers!
They're safe as long as the plastic not in contact with the food. I have little glass custard dishes with plastic lids. I keep butter in one covered with cling wrap that doesn't touch the food.
Thanks so much for speaking out about all these topics that most of us have taken for granted as being harmless or normal! A thought occurred to me watching this, which is the very popular K-Cups for coffee. Those are all plastic. Compounding (I assume) that issue is that not only is the water filtering through the coffee passing also through that plastic... that plastic is hot, which is a key thing you spoke about. Can I assume you would advise IN PARTICULAR against using K-Cups?

Where to get our water from then? No water deliveries, no water through fridge filters, tap water through PVC water pipes, etc. Even many counter top water filters and plastic components in the filters...

You can inexpensively replace your plastic storage containers by buying glass canning jars. Buy the wide-mouth jars if you plan to use them for freezing things in the freezer. Buying Made in USA canning jars will be good for American jobs.

Yes, all plastic is bad. Avoid it.
Doesn't matter everthing we ingest came into contact with plastic at one point wether it be food processed through a factory the packaging it comes in, the water from your tap flows through rusty old pipes with lead and then flows through pvc in your house. What about reverse osmosis filter? The filter canisters are plastic the faucet aswell the membrane inside the storage tank also. Here's my advice avoid what you can try to eat healthy and enjoy life don't sweat the small things.

Keep in mind that during warm months or in such regions a lot of loads of bottled water and other plastic packaged foods are hauled in dry van trailers in the heat. So it could already have bpa etc leeched into the water or other food product. Any acidic food that is packaged is worse such as canned tomatoes in bpa lined cans.

This means don’t eat delivered/takeout foods from the restaurants as they are usually placed in plastic or styrofoam containers. The exception is fast foods, which use paper packaging, but their foods are very unhealthy to begin with.
Q: What about canning lids (Ball, Kerr) for glass canning jars? There is some plastic in the lining of those lids, and they get heated once. Food isn't in contact with the lids while it's stored -- but I'm still curious about leaching during the home canning process. I'm always looking for a better (non-plastic) alternative, but this is the best I've got at the moment.

We don't eat out of plastics for 30 years. When I'm bying dairy or nuts in plastic, I put it in a new glass container at home. Especially fat absorbes the chemicals. We are so sensitive to the smell, that we can taste it, and it get worse when the package is open!
In Germany they have tested a family before and after:
They removed all the plastics from their home (what is possible) and from the foods.
They prooved that the chemicals are measurable in the blood and that reducing the use of plastics can reduce the pollution of the blood significant.

I had taken my own water to work in a mason jar for over 10 years. Trust when I say, most people do not care what's in the water, and would look at me like I was crazy for carrying my own water.

GREAT INFO as always, but about using plastic containers in the freezer, i heard plastic in cold temperature is as dangerous as warm/hot temperature, so avoid it in general and use glass or steel containers which glass is the healthiest of all, and we all know plastic emits estrogen into the food its containing,
Oh My! After watching this I started to take stock of what I have been using and I literally have to redesign my entire kitchen! I have a water cooler with 5 gal. water bottles, the cooler is plastic as well. My drip coffee maker uses a plastic filter basket as well as the water reservoir. That means every morning I am brewing coffee that is laced with these chemicals! All of my leftovers are in plastic containers which are labeled as microwave safe, so I always store food, then heat it up in the microwave for lunches and dinners! I have been doing this for years! I do have health issues, some of which are talked about in this video. At 50 years of age, I must be chock full of all these chemicals! Is there any hope? Or do I call the undertakers now....

Watch out for aluminum bottles that are often coated on the inside with epoxy resins (same as canned drinks and food). I am making the switch from plastic to everything on stainless steel, glass or wood

This is really great, Dr. thank you for taking time to explain. Phthalates are just awful! I do not agree about plastic in the refrigerator. I won’t take the chance it could leach into our food. No thank you. That’s not for me or my family. I hope you’ll also address why microwaves are awful and why styrene is awful. I beg of you! People need to hear it! What if your only source of clean water is bottled water, which comes in plastic, and at room temperature? It very well could have gotten heated up during transport from factory to store, too.

The automatic drip coffee maker that most us of are using each morning has many plastic parts that come in contact with hot water !! There are manual affordable drip makers that are all glass and metal.
It also comes with a pod that you can put your own freshly ground coffee in and pop it in where the K cup goes. If you’ve misplaced your own you can pick one up at Bed Bath&Beyond
My daughter has a speech delay in therapy I learned that its actually better to skip sippy cups all together and have you kids drink from regular cups or straws. Theres also amber stone bracets for babies to replace plastic teething rings.

Not all plastic or plastic water bottles are created equal. Just look at the number on the bottom of the water bottle in the recycling arrows. Safe numbers are 1, 2, 4, and 5 are safe for public consumption. Avoid 3, 6, 7. My Ice Mountain water bottle has the number 1 on the bottom. Number 3 is used in vinyl or PVC water bottles and can release harmful hormones into the water. Number six is on styrofoam containers which we all know should be avoided. And number 7 is on baby bottles which is the one that contains PBA.
Does this apply as strongly to BPA-free plastics?
There are so many modern kitchen conveniences (coffee makers, blenders, etc.) that are plastic, but BPA-free; are those to be avoided as well? I think I already know the answer, but hoping to be wrong. 🙁
One question to the Doc and community: I have an egg boiler which is basically a device that has a metal plate, a plastic shaft where you place the eggs, and plastic sphere with a hole in it which tops the entire construction and lets hot air flow out of it. Is this bad? I mean eggs are not in direct contact with plastic (because they have to be peeled off first). Is "plastic" air bad for the cooking process? Or is this just ok solution to get your eggs cooked fast? Thanks.
I'm a Biochemist and would caution even if plastic container is cool/cold if liquid/food is acidic=it will still leach.

Thanks for your video, I was always suspicious about water bottles left in the car - the water tasted different after a hot day. Also I’ve noticed my lymph nodes under my jaw have been swell on hot days whilst driving, since I’ve installed rubber mats in my car - so it’s highly likely there’s toxins they’re giving off in the air. I wonder if you could do a video on green tea (EGCG & Catechins in particular) - from the people I know it seems to have some odd effects - improved posture, loss of interest in eating, increased hair growth/stopping hair loss.
Zenoestrogens cause breast and prostate and testicular cancer, obesity, infertility, endometriosis, early onset puberty, miscarriages and diabetes. I am so tired of seeing family and friends die in agony and in the process giving their life's savings to doctors and drug companies, oh you say you have insurance, well what my friends spend on co-pays 3 times a week and missed work adds of quickly and they are all walking around in a living hell! You can't get rid of plastic all together, but you can do simple things to lesson the load. I use a Zero Water Filter and immediately transfer to my recycled cranberry juice jars. I have heard freezing in plastic is bad too. I didn't run right out and spend a boat load of money on glass food storage, I also use my recycled glass jars for that. I store and freeze in them and have done so for at least 10 years with no problem. I use a French Press for my coffee. We women are not the only ones with boob, you men are getting them too and unfortunately are now joining the breast cancer epidemic. my mom died of breast cancer and I choose to not walk in those shoes if I can do little things to prevent it!

One of the problems with obesity is that instead of penicillins being prescribed for minor infections like colds, or anything is brought in by Clindamycin family of antibiotics. I took 10 days of it and suddenly I gain 25 lbs within 3 weeks of stopping it and it doesn’t come off or very difficult, but there are other adverse reactions to Clindamycin and that family of antibiotics; but there is even another dangerous antibiotics called FluoroQuinolone, like Cipro, Levaquin, avelox and many generics are seriously harming and even killing people of ages for minor or just incase infections... most have a delayed reaction so it’s rare that doctors and their patients ever link the dots back to FQs!

I’m in the military and during deployments, all of the water U.S. troops consume is bottled. Pallets of bottled water sitting out in the desert sun then consumed. Wonder how many of us are now suffering side-effects?

can you please dive into recommended water system. for drinking and cooking in house I've seen berg systems and reverse osmosis and just not sure which root to take I drink Pellegrino water a good bit and do keto but really stuck on this water situation. fluoride is in our area to...ive also moved all cookware and drinking to glass thank you
Holy cow and lets not forget about kitchen spatulas and cooking tools, forks, spoons, and wow water bottles...ice cold water fine but I keep water stored in my car and it gets hot in there at times and my goodness. What a hell of an eye opener.

Dr. Berry, I agree with what you are saying however, cases of water are transported via trucks to grocery stores all over the country and how are you supposed to know if that truck sat in the sun all day and the cases of water were exposed to high temperatures before it even got to the grocery store?

I have a couple of questions……1. is hard plastic as dangerous as flexible plastic? 2. I live in a very, hot dry climate. What does it do to your body if you are wearing clothing constructed from synthetic fabrics which make you feel like you are wearing a plastic bag and you are sweating profusely?

I was just thinking I can brew coffee or get water into a glass coffee pot but the container for the filter is heavy plastic. I don't think I've ever seen a metal or glass holder for a filter except the old percolators. Any suggestions for alternatives? Additionally, when picking up to go food from restaurants, that is usually in plastic containers. I cannot imagine they would allow a person to take glass dishes into their place of business for take-out orders.

The water that comes from the taps comes via plastic underground pipes, and a lot of it is recycled with chemicals. You can get a little too paranoid about things you know. Life is always full of risks. I sometimes drink a little too much, I sometimes don’t take full safety precautions when working with machinery, I sometimes drive a little too fast. If one try’s to avoid every little risk, you’d never leave your house and lead a pretty miserable life.
I think you're right, I've been so worried about this and then I looked it up and yes most water lines are made of plastic PCV. This is one of those things I'll just have to let go off, so if I'm screwed than so is everyone else. Plastic is everywhere.

What if you have bottled water stored at room temp but you put them in the freezer till they get icy? Is it still okay to drink that water?
I'm disabled & I need to use straws. I use re-usable acrilic straws cuz stainless steel is too heavy
@Womp Womp I find it very hard to believe you can actually get those bamboo straws clean; ditto for stainless steel.

I got rid of all of our plastic years and years ago. We only use glass and stainless steel. I'm just not a plastic fan at all. I know it's hard when you are going out to dinner or to a friends house because you don't know what they use, but at least our home is plastic free.
But what is the source of the water you drink before you fill your glass and stainless steel containers?
